Medusa

Eggs on their own

Medusa I hate hate hate beer too. I also don't like too much blood in my meat. I was vegetarian for nine years and I'm not now, but I'm still a bit freaked out by meat. My food dislikes (apart from the usual tripe etc) are:

- raw oysters
- rockmelon & honeydew melon
- pawpaw
- rum (ok you drink it but I hate it anyway)
- pork (the smell of roast pork with crackling makes me want to gag)
- any meat on a bone (eg chicken drumsticks) - I can eat it if I cut the meat off with my cutlery, but I cannot pick up the bone and gnaw the meat off - I'M NOT A CAVEMAN.
- any meat with gristly/cartilage bits

How interesting. Tim Tam, flowers only for you huh?

I've always thought of myself as a (food) lover rather than a fighter, but even just thinking about it for a few minutes there are more than a few that I prefer not to ingest! Including:
- eggplant (it's a texture thing)
- oysters (see above)
- offal of any kind, yech
- tomatoes. Seems a bit silly, I know. I don't mind eating them as part of a salad but would happily not include them on a regular basis. Do like tomato-based cooked sauces though.
- coffee
- numerous alcoholic spirits as a result of teenage (ba-bow) excess; the usual suspects, including rum, bourbon and tequila. Vodka and gin still a-ok but more of a wine and beer gal these days.

My mum had a violent dislike of two foods: cauliflower (the smallest whiff of it cooking would cause her to gag) and pineapple (she hated the taste but it also made her break out in hives. I think it was psychosomatic though!)

RBB the tomato thing seems to be common to quite a few people. I forgot to include it on my list because I've "grown up" about it, but tomatoes still aren't something I love. I kind of include them in salads etc because I have to, not out of choice. I can't eat a slice of tomato on its own - it has to be mixed in with other things so I just get a taste of it. I can't stand the thought of a big thick slice of tomato on its own in my mouth. Having said that, I adore cooked tomato and tomato-based sauces, and I also don't mind cherry tomatoes. I'd never eat cherry tomatoes on their own though (some people munch on them like lollies!), but I'd happily include them in a salad.

Aha, so I'm not alone then!

Yes, some people do really enjoy them on their own (especially the big organic oxheart varieties, apparently flavour is completely different to your supermarket stuff). Pardner loves tomatoes, bites into them like they're apples. Does this with cheese too, it's gross - a great big hunk in one go. Looks like an oversized rat has been at it, not that I'd ever compare him to vermin :chuckle:

Haha my mum used to do that with cheese!! You'd go to get cheese out of the fridge and there'd be a big uneven hunk cut out of it, AND she used to put it back in the fridge with no gladwrap or anything, so the end would go all dark and manky!! Ahhh, she's a teenage boy at heart, my mum.

Pardner has no excuse for that 'teenage' behaviour (about to hit 30; he doesn't even cut into the block - bites straight off the edge in one fell swoop!). But I guess we all have our bad food habits...as we've well and truly seen in the 'food confessions' thread!

I eat almost everything but since i've been trying to lose wait i've become way fussier

I hate:
-pawpaw - my grandmother would have this for breakfast everyday, apparently it is full of goodness, eg. paw paw ointment and why we all love it.
-oyster
-fish
-scallops
-mushrooms - sauce, cooked, raw etc - only eaten in beef strog, but picked out
-beef mince - i can't stand the smell og mince cooking but i eat it, a friend of mine is a butcher and he said if the mince really stinnks when cooking its all the livers and kidneys they have added to bulk it up, EWWWWW
-rump steak - taste like blood

Elizabeth

Im definatley not a fussy eater. I will try anything once, and basically the only thing I wont eat is Liver (cooked of course). I HATE the texture of it in my mouth :vomit:

PUMPKIN. :vomit: As a child I would leave it til last and then after I'd finished evrything on my plate I'd shove it all in my mouth, run off to the toilet, spit it into the bowl and flush, flush, flush. Mum FINALLY caught on and didn't make it for me anymore. Just to explain, I lived in a household where a meal had to be finished, no left over food on plates allowed. So I blame mum for my bad habit of having to eat everything on my plate now.

I have one massive food hate, ask any one I know and they will tell you. I HATE Bananas. :vomit: It's the texture mainly, but it's also the smell and the way people eat them (esp. in school days).
At school once some one was having a food fight right near me and they accidentally got some banana in my hair. It mad me cry, like actual tears!! My friends had to console me!!! It's like an actual phobia!!:chuckle:

- Seafood. I will not eat ANYTHING that swims. I can still handle it raw (as in touch it) though - I used to work in a fish and chip shop in high school.
- pork ... I will sometimes eat bacon, but not much
- whipped cream - I cannot stand it when people put this on desserts :vomit:

I'm not too overly fussy, there are other foods I don't enjoy as much but I will still eat it.

nattieb

I'll eat most things or at least try them once, but my HATES are:

- Brussel Sprouts - eeeecchh! :vomit:

- Peas

- Baked beans (mum tells me I loved them as a kid but can't stand them now!)

- Figs - especially if it's in fancy smanchy fruit toast - it just ruins it

- Licorice - i love strawberry flavour but not your traditional stuff

am sure there are others that I can't think of right now too!

I got terrible food poisoning from a paella about 3 years ago and I still can't stand the smell of it. Which is a shame because I used to love it.

I'll eat pretty much anything except for raw oysters (the texture and taste is just like phlegm - YUCK), and gross offal like tripe etc.

Very interesting reading about everyone's dislikes. Same as you nattieb, some of my favourites are on other people's 'yuck' lists! Love bananas and pumpkin, but do understand the texture thing for other people. I have one friend who really hates bananas for that reason and also freaks out at the mere thought of peanut butter sticking to the roof of her mouth. I'd chuckle about it but to her it's serious!

BPJ too funny re: flushing vegies down the toilet. I remember sitting around our kitchen table every night for the family dinner. We had a long tablecloth that reached almost to the floor. Our dog used to sit underneath while we ate and I'd surreptitiously feed her my broccoli. She loved it! But preferably with cheese sauce, that was her favourite :) Enjoy broccoli now though.

Thought of myself as a very unfussy eater until I read your posts and realised that there were things there that I myself dont like!

Lettuce - made to eat this as a child, I chew and chew and it never goes down. Have been able to eat some baby cos in a salad but that's only how close I ever come to eating lettuce! (have not seen this amongst your lists!)
Scallops, probably the squish factor but I do like oysters and muscles.
Prawns, used to love them but after a dodgy laksa, I cannot eat them anymore.
Peas by themselves (fine in a risotto but not alone!).
Skin/Peel on eggplants and pumpkin - how can this taste good?
Any fat on piece of meat - another childhood phobia, it makes me feel like I am choking. Sometimes not much meat left after I am done dissecting it!

However, I have a severe crustacean allergy and don't enjoy any variety of mushroom, they taste like soil and the texture makes me gag :vomit: ( sorry! )

I'm pretty sure there's not one single vegetable or fruit that I won't eat (spinach happens to be my all time favourite food), but I used to be a very fussy eater as a child until I was about 10 when I suddenly loved every single type of food and got over it in a second!

One thing I've never really liked though is beef mince - whether it's in lasagne, tacos, meatloaf, spahetti bolognese, rissoles, I don't know why, I just don't like it. And ice cream. not a big fan of that either.

I don't really know how to describe them, they're just a thing I found in a salad once and thought they were disgusting. Kinda look a bit like green olives on long stalks, but with a really bad texture and a kind of briny taste.

I'm not the biggest fan of the roast either. I don't get what the big deal is. It takes HOURS to cook, it's so fiddly to synchronise the cooking and oven temperatures of everything, there's always so much food, and it doesn't even taste that great. Give me some salmon and salad or a big bowl of pasta anyday! I am very good at cooking a roast though, I have to say - it's an essential man-catching skill apparently! :chuckle:

Yum! That sounds about right, if it has no bone in it. To check if its ready prick the centre and if the juice comes out clear its ready.

Are you doing spuds? I like to coat them in some olive oil and crushed garlic then chuck them in the pan. Gives them a nice flavour but it might be a garlic overload??

Keep basting throughout the cooking process to keep it nice and tender. I'd add extra garlic too, only cause I'm a garlic nut. The more the better (just keep the mints handy)

Probably wouldn't hurt, some people do develop intolerances for foods. I doubt they'd bother testing you unless it was a really pronounced sensitivity/allergy, but if you know that it doesn't work for you then that's probably the best guide.

Bread and pasta make me feel awfully sick these days! I think I have developed some kind of intolerance...is that possible? I pretty much only ate toast for dinner all last year when I moved out of home and now I can't go near it without feeling it in my tummy for the rest of the day.

Has this happened to anyone else? Should I see my doctor?

You probably have a wheat intolerance, so yes go see your doc.

Yeah it is possible, my brother has coeliacs and i'm intolerant (but if I'm careful I can have it a bit). The only thing you can do is avoidance and see if the symptoms go away. If you want a coeliac test go to the doctor, otherwise they can't diagnose an intolerance and most docs don't believe there is such a thing anyhow.

all should be banned

A lot of people hate capsicum. I find it weird cos i love it, but those who hate it are vehemently against it! I remember reading a crappy restaurant review once where the reviewer was angry that his pasta had capsicum in it and he said that they should warn people if any dishes contained capsicum. What the?!! That's like warning people that something contains tomato, or lettuce!

Capsicum, really? I love capsicum!

Foods I don't like - baked beans, english spinach, sausages, pumpkin, sweet and sour pork, icecream, cold potato and rice, offal, mango, yoghurt ( I try so hard to like this!), and ginger. Oh - and margarine/butter on sandwiches - I agree em!

I am allergic to avocado, and also wraps from this place downstairs - SO WEIRD.

Foods I'm not sposed to eat - haha where should we start!

Toastie, try cutting it out yourself and see how you go, but if you do have reactions you may need to get tested - though that can be a process - I ahve been tested for coeliac disease 3 times - all came back inconclusive which then meant it was the the stick stuff down and up me - not pleasant - if you ar ea coeliac you need to cut everything out asap, if it's an intolerance it's easier to handle, but it may well be worth it to avoid some serious damage.

Try cutting it down - I did this when I was having reactions - first with dariy and I founda difference, then got tested and found out I was lactose intolerant, and with wheat as well, same thing. I was bad and never went back for the tube test as I had other things at the time I needed to have taken care of, but I just monitor and havea reduced amount and do swapsies and I manage AOK. Which is great - I don't want to have to add coeliac to my medical dictionary size medical conditions!

We don't like a lot of the same things: sweet and sour pork, offal, yogurt (however i do make myself eat it occassionally) and ginger. I can't stand ginger it makes me wanna gag.

I have no idea why people would put margarine or butter on a salad sandwiche, it ruins the flavour makes it taste all fatty and yuck.

I can take youghurt when I make Tzatziki or something - because it doesn't taste or smell like yoghurt hehe. Those Yoplait's and stuff I find so disgusting and watery. There is a place in Adelaide that does Greek yoghurt with fresh toppings like strawberry puree and it's quite nice - but I still couldn't eat it every day.

For me its the texture of the yogurt that makes me gag after 1 mouthful and i think thats why i prefer greek yogurt when i do eat it because its thicker.

Just talking about it makes me wanna :vomit:

I don't eat:
* meat of any kind..
* animal milk (I drink soy), yoghurt,
* paw-paw, mango, pickles, sultanas

Limited amounts of:
* gluten products, I am intolerant when I have too much
* dairy products, I am also intolerant, but I sometimes have ice-cream (most the time it makes me ill to think about it, but sometimes I feel like a little bit), I rarely feel like cream (unless its a bit on a pavlova).. but I love hard cheeses and chocolate so I don't rule out dairy altogether.
* eggs - I don't mind them in something but they are gross by themselves.

Yeah youse guys are all freaks.

It's amazing the amount of people who don't like yoghurt though! I have always LOVED yoghurt and I could eat it at every meal (not the no-fat kind, it's not gross to me but it's just kinda pointless and tastes like crap) but lately I have met a lot of people who hate it. I have a friend who doesn't mind plain yoghurt but hates the bits of fruit in it.

I'm very iffy about most meat. I used to be vegetarian and I could quite easily be one again. My mum LOVES meat and is a major carnivore, and the smell of all her frying and roasting makes me quite ill sometimes. I'll occasionally eat a bit of roast beef but only if it's marinaded, I hate that "meat" flavour. Same with steak, if it's not marinaded or covered in a sauce, I'm not really a fan. But I will admit I like a nice restaurant steak, and I do love sausages. But for things like stir-fry, I could (and do) happily have tofu instead.

Having said all that, i always feel much, MUCH healthier when I eat a predominantly meat+vegie diet, and cut out most carbs. Which sucks because I adore pasta.
