Which one do you prefer? coffee or tea? And what do you drink?

I love my coffee in the morning - i always start with a large weak cappuccino. I tend to enjoy tea in the afternoons as I find it more relaxing. Have started drinking white tea as i have heard it contains ligher levels of antioxidants than black tea. Also love chamomile on cold winter nights and peppermint tea when im feeling full or bloated.

Tim Tam, I love my tea too. Brought back so much of it from China and Hong Kong. The white tea is especially good for you. We went to a proper tea ceremony while we were in Beijing, very precise and fancy!

I MUST have my Earl Grey cuppa in the morning. I like my tea strongly brewed with only a touch of milk. I dont mind coffee but am wary having it while I am out as the wrong milk can make me ill for hours. If I am desperate for one, I would have a short black. Dont drink all that much coffee anymore but if I have a headache, it tends to help it go away.

I like the odd cup of herbal tea. The Celestial Seasonings brand of Red Zinger is a fave and I like the occasional Peppermint Tea too.

I love both tea and coffee.
Usually I will drink a short latte or macchiato daily.
I generally enjoy herbal or traditional chinese teas. So comforting.

I prefer the tea they use in Chinese restaurants as opposed to Japanese restaurants. We were out a few nights ago (having Japanese) and I swear their green tea smelt like smelly socks! Much prefer Jasmine - bit more aromatic!!

Jasmine is such a favourite and it is wonderful with food. I also enjoy Oolong and various green teas.
For convenience I generally purchase my herbals from T2, it's organic and they have a good variety.
LB, I sadly have not tried the "smelly socks" variety. This girl hasn't lived! he! he! :chuckle:

Love that store too! I go to the Brunswick St one nearby. Can spend ages in there smelling all the exotic varieties and drooling over the gorgeous cups and saucers. Their gift wrapping is sensational, they use Chinese newspaper, orange tissue paper and tie together with string - very striking!

I shop in Hawkesburn Village and also spend hours touching and smelling everything in the store. A good place for gift buying!
Last year I purchased a complete set of tea pot cups and saucers in bone with black roses, sounds yucky but they are stunning. The cups are really broad as is the pot. I use them everyday and still love them to bits.

I have to have my two coffees in the morning (black with sugar as am lactose intolerant), to wake me up. In the afternoon its herbal teas (green, peppermint, cinnamin flavoured and camomile teas), with one earl grey tea thrown in there when I need some me time. Mmmm me time with earl grey...

I'm more of a tea drinker. I love my English Breakfast daily, and sometimes I will drink Green Tea with Jasmine - its good for your metabolism. I bought a big selection of different flavoured tea leaves online at the Tea Centre, although I'm yet to try most of them.

Lately I've been having a rough time at work so I've been having a cup of instant coffee in place of my tea, it gets me through somehow. Whenever I go out for coffee its always a mugachino with skim milk.

Tea all the way for me. I had a big latte recently after not drinking coffee for about five years and it made me really ill!

I like tea pure and strong, with no milk. Earl Grey is my favourite, like LB, and I drink about three cups a day. So lovely and aromatic, it's like a big warm blanket. I also like Jasmine and White Tea, and the occasional herbal (peppermint the most often and quite like lemon & ginger for a bit of a pick-me-up). I honestly don't know what I'd do if I couldn't drink tea every day. I'm sure I'd have withdrawls!

Jaime I love The Tea Centre too. The scents that waft out of the store when you walk past it - ahhhhhhhhh.....

Pardner is total coffee addict though; about 6 cups a day.

I absolutely detest coffee. I even hate the smell of it. I have only ever tried it once and that was enough for me.

I hardly ever have hot drinks although in the winter months I like to have a Chai Tea from Hudsons ocassionally. I also quite like Vanilla Tea that I get from a little tea house in Hobart. I have the odd hot chocolate now and then or a milo but I much prefer my Coke Zero, Milk Shakes (neither of which I can have at the moment), Orange Juice and water. I also like Milo.

I'm not big on coffee, only rarely drink it..... Definatley teas the go for me, especially green tea!!! Love it, not too big with the combinations or flavours that they can sometimes add to green tea, but the original is always the best. I used to drink quite a bit of jasmine tea, but now I cant stand it... theres sumthing with the flavour and taste that makes me go 'funny' lol i duno, i just cant stand it now. I drink white tea aswell, and red tea (good for digesting food and your metabolism, even though I wouldnt say its the best tasting).
I also but a varition of teas made from different herbs and flowers (eg Pansy tea, good for your skin) from my Polish deli.
I was actually wondering about some good tea houses or shops in sydney, if anyone knows???

I'm obsessed with coffee, to the point where I have tried to give up and have only been successful for a day or two. I love everything about it - the smell, the taste, the pick-me-up qualities. My bestie is also a coffee-lover so I think we enable each other. I treat coffee a little bit like others might treat wine - I have gone to coffee plantations and to the places where they roast and mill the beans, and I've done a lot of reading about coffees from different parts of the world and different elevations, and the different beans etc. It's so interesting to me - but even if I knew nothing about coffee, I still think I'd be obsessed. People say my house smells like coffee when they walk in, which makes me happy cos I love it. I would probably have a cup of tea every two weeks. I do like it but I'm just not that into it. When I do have tea, though, I like it to be brewed in a teapot, not from a teabag (though I'll go a teabag if I'm desperate for caffeine and there is no other option). I collect teapots and adore tea shops, so I'm not anti-tea at all, I'm just pro coffee!!

Both for me!

I normally start my day with a Green Tea with Citrus first up when I get to work.

Then by mid-morning I duck out for a coffee - normally a cap or a latte on Soy (lactose intolerance)

I love my tea and will have that throughout the day - I don't like to have more then one coffee a day (unless I'm very tired!) so tea does the trick. Don't mind the odd cuppa before bed - it relaxes me.

Im very much the same with my tea - esp the peppermints and green teas - i find them really bitter without any sugar. i feel like i am removing all health benefits with the amount of suagr i put in my tea so i an trying to slowly cut down - rather than cutting out sugar all at once.

I cut out sugar a few years ago.

I found it easy to do with my tea, and I only every add a tiny bit of sugar if I'm feeling a bit down or whatever (mum always said a sweet tea is a good pickmeup).

I don't add sugar to coffee anymore either - this was the hardest one to do though I must admit! Now I prefer the real coffee taste so it's all good

Me too nattieb - I cut out sugar in my tea and coffee about ten years ago (GOD that makes me feel old, but it was when i was 14 so it WAS ten years ago!). Now I absolutely cannot have sugar in coffee, it makes me feel ill. I love the real coffee taste. I will occasionally put a bit of sugar in tea though, your mum is right about sweet tea being a pick-me-up.

I have a few more tea mutterings...

Firstly, Jaime, do you have the www for that Tea Centre?

Do like my tea sweet, two level sugars, slightly more heaped for coffee and

When I go away, particularly to inlaws, the FIRST thing I pack is my Earl Grey tea. I have made my own tea there for many years now after repeadedly (and in full view) throwing it down the sink and starting again! IMO, it needs a certain time to brew, you DO NOT chuck in the milk while the tea bag is still in the cup and I only need a teaspoon of milk, not half the cup thanks!:chuckle:

Wanted to post a pic of delightful (and well spoken) Chinese lady who took us through a lengthy tea ceremony but jpeg file deemed too big but just had to tell you about the oddity they include ! There is a huge ritual to it from the temperature of the water to how you are supposed to slurp it! Then out comes the "pissing boy"! He is ceramic and dipped into the hot water to determine right temp before adding tea. It is deemed ready when he is taken out and begins peeing everywhere! Very funny sight. . And you just thought jiggling that tea bag was all you did....!

I have a cup of tea in the morning first thing when I get to work with my breakfast. Its always Williamsons English Breakfast Tea. By mid-morning I have a cup of white tea, with no sugar.

I very rarely have coffee, and I wont drink instant coffee (hate the taste), only espresso. At home on the weekends I like to have Illy Coffee from a plunger, or if Im out a flat white with soy and 2 sugars.

I love Twinings English Breakfast tea. NOT a fan of Earl Grey - although I can have it in the afternoon. Drink Peppermint Tea in the afternoon at work and at night time, in a bid to get more water in and no caffeine. I do drink coffee but not often. If it is instant I prefer Nescafe Gold Blend, but prefer real coffee. And it has to be a cappucino. I don't understand lattes. Why would you NOT want a sprinkling of chocolate on top of your froth?? Mmmmmm

Kate (Staff)

I only have one cup of coffee a day, as any more than that makes me wired and jittery... but I am a hardcore coffee nerd :ashamed: I have a Gaggia Classic espresso machine and also a Sunbeam conical burr grinder, plus all the accessories (frothing jugs in different sizes, milk thermometer, knock box, etc etc). I went to barista training to learn how to make a proper espresso and have now become very fussy - quite often when I go to a cafe, the staff are not trained properly and so the coffee is not as a good as I make it. My favourite beans are from Atomica on Brunswick St (who also make the best coffees in Melbourne).

But I also love tea and have 3-4 cups a day. My favourite tea is "Lorraine's Blend" which I order from Croplines in Launceston - Lorraine is actually a friend of my dad's and she invented this blend of black tea and apricot that is the best tea you will ever taste!

Flat white of a morning to get me going and same for morning tea

I either drink a skinny cap or a caramle or haxelnut latter when i'm out.

I like tea but i just don't craze it as often, however whenever i'm sick thats all i drink for all the antioxidants and it makes you feel good.

In winter i drink way more tea because if you want a hot drink after dinner at night coffee is not your best choice.

I love green tea, but it makes me sick, i get the most uspet stomach ever and i feel if i tried i could vomit. I drink it every now and again but then i regret it.

Which one do you prefer? coffee or tea? And what do you drink?

Being born in an area famous for its tea production( Assam north east India ) I am deffinetely a tea drinker, I love to experiment with my cup of tea. Like mixing a normal tea bag with a Jasmine flavour tea bag, Or drop a few bits of ginger before you pour the hot water. Also i love Indian red chai, which is a boiled tea leaf in water with sugar and a bit of salt make it really refreshing, You can squeeze a few lemon drops if you want to. Good for colds and flue. Well according to the locals of India.

Dipal, I worked with a 5 star extraordinary chef for some years who was of Indian decent. He had the most amazing knowledge of herbs/spices, their benefits and uses, it was mind blowing. When customers would attend our Restaurant suffering some form of ailment (mainly in winter) chef would grab a bit of this and some of that and steep in our traditional cast iron tea pots. The customers adored this personal touch which addtionally was beneficial for their ailments.

There is only 1 place in this Higher Power-forsaken hole that makes a good coffee. They use Danes - oh yeah! When I get around to buying an espresso machine, we will have this at home too.

Instant coffee is to be avoided at all costs! Normal tea must have 1 sugar, chai should be served in a latte with honey, and coffee should be sugar free, and preferebly in a skinny latte :hearts:

I think I have somehow, without me realising, converted from a diehard coffee drinker to a tea drinker :shockedhair: . All of a sudden I find myself really looking forward to a nice, sweet cup of earl grey tea over my usual coffee  .

I tend to go through a bit of tea-preference seasonally. In winter I still have coffee in the morning but I love Earl Grey throughout the day. In summer it's all coffee for me though!

I've got a tea-preference thing going on at the moment! It's def seasonal for me.. in summer I'll still have a morning coffee when I get to work but sip on water all day. Now that it's getting cooler (and the aircon is still on summer highs at work!) i'm finding myself making a tea more often!

I love coffee and tea.
On a normal day I'll have a coffee in the morning - instant, 1 sugar & some skim milk and then another coffee mid afternoon if I'm out (always get from gloria jeans) and/or one after dinner.
Tea I drink is alot of herbal, green or white and black teas - usually 3-4 cups a day. i'm obsessed!
lol....thats a lot of coffee and tea :o
but the only other thing i drink is water. im not a fan of soft drinks or juices. i have the rare diet coke or hot cocoa though (i get real organic cocoa..yummy :)

I can't start my morning without a large skinny cap at my fave local cafe... even though I have to wait ages, it's sooooo worth it! Love my coffee, & this is the right temp, not burnt... perfect! :clapping: And in Bris Vegas it's hard 2 get a good coffee...
Hate instant coffee & will only drink it if it's the ONLY coffee available...

That said, I also drink at least 2 cups of green tea a day. It's chock full of anti-oxidants & speeds up your metabolism. Also like to have Earl Grey at night or when I need to detox from too much cafeine ... :shakehead:

I'm loving my tea more and more in winter - its so comforting and relaxing for me. I like my tea to be strong though ( but not bitter ) so i get the Dilmah extra strength one and let the tea sit for as long as i can wait.

Drinking more and more tea at work too as the coffee in the office tastes like dirty water and its too cold to go out and get one. Although the tea never tastes the same as when im at home (and i use the same tea!) that has always puzzled me!!

I love good coffee - never instant - and I love tea. Lady Grey, Earl Grey, Chai, Green Tea, Peppermint tea, English breakfast...it all depends on my mood. At work I always begin with a cappuccino, but when I get home I hanker for a calming cup of English breakfast or Earl Grey - it helps me to unwind. Now that winter is here I have also been getting into the milo.

I also love drinking out of beautiful china mugs and antique teacups - although the latter never holds enough tea!

Ooooohhhh - must get me some to have here - main ones we can get here is the powder, which is ultra-sweet.

ETA: Found this recipe online.

Here is a simple recipe to make chai yourself at home. This is what you will need:

1 1/2 cups of water

1 1/2 inch stick of cinnamon

8 cardamom pods

8 whole cloves

1/4 inch fresh ginger root (sliced thin)

2/3 cup of milk

6 teaspoons sugar

3 teaspoons of Darjeeling Tea leaves
Place water, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and ginger in a pot and bring to a boil.

Cover and lower heat to low setting and simmer for 10 minutes.

Add milk and sugar and again bring to simmer.

Next, add the tea leaves, remove from heat and cover.

Let steep for 3 minutes and strain. Enjoy!

I have tried both the tea-tonic and Dr. Stuarts. The latter is a little milder in taste - a bit like a generic green tea taste. Tea Tonic is an excellent tea but the flavour is a little stronger. Still nice to drink though - no really overpowering flavours. You can buy smaller amounts of the Tea Tonic as a trial in most places.

There's a cafe near where I live, and their gimmick thing is way-out types of tea and coffee. They have this "cat poo coffee" (it does have a proper name but I can't remember it), and basically it is made from coffee beans that have been swallowed by this certain South American mountain cat, and then pooed out and the coffee is made from the beans that have passed through the cat. It apparently takes all the bitterness out of the coffee or something! I don't know why, because the bitterness is nice to me. Anyway, it retails at $50 a cup and everyone raves about it!!

They also have these lotus flower tea infusions which they serve in clear glass teapots. The lotus flowers are stuffed with tea leaves and other types of dried flowers and what-have-you, and then tightly bound up (I don't know how). When the boiling water is poured in, the lotus apparently "blooms" and it looks very beautiful. That one is a relatively cheap $25 a pot!

The cat poo coffee is coffee made from berries devoured and then passed by the civet cat - apparently it gives a more mellow flavour.

Another reason why I love my bestie - she and I have (well, had - she is pregnant and can't stand the smell!) a shared love of coffee and I always got good coffee at her place!

Whats caro?

It's a non-caffeinated coffee-type drink. Like fake coffee. It reminds me of being at my grandma's before I was allowed coffee, and I thought it was sooooo cool to be allowed a cup of Caro!!

Luisa Brown

Serena, caffeine is usually my first remedy for a headache but it had gone past it today with the pitiful amount of water I had actually drunk. I began to get signs of heat exhaustion and used cold packs to bring my body temp down. A couple of pain killers were required too but after a yummy dinner and about a litre of water I am feeling a heap better.

What do you guys think about kids drinking coffee? I think it is a no no, too much caffine. I also ban all those energy drinks. Miss 15 is allowed to drink a cup a day at home with her mum. Being a stepmum is such a hard position esp when Dad hates confrontation. :(

Mr12 is allowed a weak cup once in a blue moon. None of my kids were allowed it on a regular basis until after Year10 or age 16. Neither is Mr12 allowed energy drinks - the ones with guarana etc.

Good luck!!

We were always allowed to drink coffee and tea growing up, so I guess I don't see anything that bad about it - kids get caffeine from plenty of other sources anyway. But I completely understand and respect your position Medusa. But having said that, I would say that 15 is definitely old enough to be allowed to have coffee.

I was always allowed to have a coffee with my mum and her friend when i was 12, but i never was bought one from a cafe. I think 1 coffee a week is okay as a social thing but anymore than that a week can't be good for growing bodies, there are enough other hidden nasties in the food and drink without adding caffeine. There is plenty of time for them to drink coffee in ther adult like.

My neice and nephew have bubbacinos which are no coffee just milk, froth and marshmallow and to them its the novelty and to be like the rest of us.

There's actually not a lot of evidence that caffeine has any long-term adverse effects. Of course it can cause disturbed sleep in some people and can also sometimes interfere with absoption of some vitamins and minerals like magnesium (but not to any kind of dangerous level). I say CAN - I drink coffee all the time and I had my levels tested recently and I was not deficient in anything. It is also a diuretic and can cause dehydration if drunk in place of water (if you're dumb enough to stop drinking water). That being said, there's really no evidence that coffee is bad for you. Its effects are fairly similar to those of tea, yet coffee is often seen as a "bad guy", which I think is unfair. I have met people who are really hypocritical about caffeine and love to criticise coffee drinkers while drinking three or four cups of tea a day!!
