Do you live in an apartment or a house? Do you own or rent? What do you love about your home? What would you change? Who do you live with? Anything else? Sorry about the 3rd degree :whipcrack:

I live in an apartment with my brother and Puffin my puppy. My parents own the apartment and we pay them rent (at a good price, mind). It's a really nice new apartment with all the mod cons... but I need new sofas, I hate the ones I have (hand me downs:vomit: ) I would also change the location, it's a bit far from the city for my liking.

In September last year my house burnt down. We live on a property so we bought a bunch of cabins and stuff to live in. My parents have a little cabin, my little sister has a cabin, I have a little caravan and my older sister has a shipping container decked out with a kitchen and bathroom. We'll probably be here for another year until we build again.
It's pretty cool, we're actual Trailer Trash!

Im 23 and live at home with my parents and my older sister (who is currently living in Canada) and with my puppy Lucy. I really want to move out and live by myself and hopefully find a place that will allow me to have pets :)

Currently renting while we work away, although we have just bought a house at the next town we move to in a few months. I live with my partner and our dog & cat, just the way I like it.
I need new couches too VeeE, mine were second hand from my nan and my cat has scratched and ripped them to buggery. :flames:

I live with my pardner and rent a nice little ground-floor apartment. Have been there for about six years so it almost feels like ours (oh yeah - apart from the fact that we can't do anything to it and our payments go into someone else's bank account and not into an investment. Gah!)

Look-wise we've got a mix of Ikea, retro and family antiques. Surprisingly it works ok. I'd say it's a bit 50s (cause I'm a New Look girl at heart). Jaime we have a kitty too and he refuses to use the scratching post - both couches now have strategically-placed throw rugs on the corners! I also like to pretend I'm a bit of a gardener and have recently re-"landscaped" with camellias as well as natives.

We're in a great spot near the shops, work etc and city only a few minutes away. A short wander to the lake for a walk or a picnic. Little bro also lives across the road and "drops in" for dinner regularly. I really like our place but plan to buy in a few years. Sick of my money going out the door with minimum return. Just have to restrain the Adore addiction and work on that deposit...:ashamed:

Haven't lived in a cabin like Toastie but have called a tiny farm shack and caravan "home" in former lives!

i am 23 and i took the plunge last year and am now paying off a two bedroom apartment which i love! 10 mins from the city and i have everything a my door step! my 20 yr old brother lives with me (he thinks he has made me his personal maid much to my disgrace) and our cat Ava who runs the place.....lol:) i am waiting to get some money to do up my bedroom as it is a bit plain but other than that my place was newly renovated when i moved in.

There's no clear reason to why the fire started. It was pretty old (like, 120 years old lol) so it's thought that it was started by old wiring (the wiring was about 80 years old). Living in cabins is alright, it's an experience. Makes you tougher, you know? Haha. It's kind of like camping, but nicer. It'll make us appreciate our new house a lot. It's been okay over the summer but I'm not really looking forward to having to walk outside to go to the bathroom in winter. Oh well! Haha.

Noice one. Know what you mean about winter, especially here in Arctic Canberra.

Our farm shack out at Captain's Flat had no plumbing or electricity, and we lived there for nine months. I was a kid so it was kinda fun at first but wore off after a while. We used a generator for lighting, heating etc. I clearly remember my mum heating bricks up in the stove and putting them down the end of the bed to keep us warm. And midnight runs to the outside loo, with frost (and sometimes snow) tickling the tootsies. We got flooded and snowed in a couple of times and the SES had to do food drops. Quite an adventure for a wee tacker!

I moved into my new place with the boy not quite two weeks ago :) I'm finally a homeowner! Yay for the rat race :chuckle: It's a two bedroom Victorian terrace and I LOVE it.

Haven't had much chance (or money) to do anything to it yet or get any new furniture, so at the moment the decor style is a mishmash of classic vs modern vs Ikea vs cardboard boxes

Me and my partner (and our dog) brought our first house just over a year ago, its about 10-15 mins out of town.

Sometimes i can get really depressing not having enough money to do what you want to your own house because of having a mortgage but at least it is ours, we have half finshed painting the outside and are putting a new kitchen in this year...yah! :clapping: I cannot wait i hate our kitchen.

I like that we have a huge section for our dog, a park down the road and river close by.

What i dont like is realising how much hard work it all is!

I'm 26 and STILL living at home! I live with the whole family (5 of us) and two dog puppies. I do pay board, am also paying off a loan... so it's the best situation for me at the moment (not the lovelife though but hey..)

BUT in my defence I've had more overseas holidays than most of my friends and I think that's a good experience to have.

I have my next holiday coming up in August this year and when I get back I'm going to try and buy myself my own unit/apartment/townhouse closer to the CBD. All a bit scary but have decided it's time... :penguin:

Thanks for that! I have to say I find I'm having to justify my choice more and more these days.

SO many people saying I've missed out on a whole experience because I want to skip the rent and get the mortgage... but I figure I'll probably need to get myself a flatmate anyway so that's going to be the same.

AND so many friends saying they think I'm single because of it.. that it puts guys off - so hard not justify myself, but am trying! I figure if a guy can't deal with my choices he's not right anyway!

Ok I'll get off my soapbox now! But thatnks RBB! :waving:

I live only a few mins from the city too. Born and bred in the inner city - dont think I could do the suburban thing! We have been here for years and have slowly renovated the entire house (kitchen begging for major overhall though). Just finished redecorating our lounge room. As I am severely allergic to cats so dont have the cat/scratch problem and have invested in the most divine chocolate leather couches. Currently only less than five mins to work but will increase to 20 with my new job (I have been lucky with no travel time for 10years so cant complain!):)

Same here about the couches (one particular persian who was particular about his scratching couch - even when we bough him a scratching post.....) . In fact we deliberately picked out faux sueded couches because they are so hard to shred and destroy!!! I moved out of home when I was 17 to go to Uni (country girl :hearts: ). Anyway, I've paid almost $100,000 in rent since that time (ten years ago), enough to pay off half a house (that I would buy now), and that's not including my partner's rent too. Am very glad that I had the early life lessons and learnt early to be able to manage and budegt on my own, but if only I'd had the option of staying at home and saving - I would say DO IT!!! You really are financially better off.

God lord!!!! Wow, that is a lot of money (dur!!!). I have stopped myself from adding up the amount of money I have spent on rent in the past, precisely for the fear of seeing that kind of figure! I have recently bought a house, which is a nice feeling, except for those moments when I realise just how much debt I'm in! But it is a nice cosy house near my family and work, and I am slowly turning it into how I want it to be. It is nice to know that my money is now going towards something that is mine (or will be anyway!).

I am a home owner (or a mortage payer I should say). After many years in share houses we finally bought our house about 7yrs ago. I hated it when we got it but it was in a good spot & we have done a massive renovation & landcsaping so it looks nothing like its former self. I sometimes think it would have been easier just to rebuild. There are still many jobs to be done.

We have a 3 bedroom + office single story house on a decent sized block. It is smack bang in the middle of all the freeways so was the perfect location for us as our jobs were on the road everyday (sales reps).

I would say our place is Modern Eclectic & completely overun with kid's toys!

Yeah what is it with cats and scratching the couches when they have a perfectly good post to climb??
Anyone know of a good deterrant? It's probably a bit late, my couches have seen better days thanks to puss, but its still really annoying. I can't get new ones till the problem is solved.
Your new lounge sounds gorgeous Luisa. I'd love to get a chocolate brown suede suite.

Oooh I'm so in the same boat as you nattieb!! I'm a bit younger (24) and at uni, but there seems to be the idea that I should have moved out by now.....but I don't see why!! I live with my Mum (parents are divorced) and we have a great time and we really "work" as housemates (ok ok i don't go halves in the rent or anything so we're not really housemates lol). I have lived out of home for a few years before but I moved back because I found it pointless to be wasting my money on rent, utilities, phone etc when I was much happier living with my Mum! She's happy to have me there too....I'm far more domestic than her so I do all the cooking and cleaning (sometimes I do her washing for her!) and she just does her thing. She has a long-term partner who lives by himself but has no intention of marriage or anything, and I'm in a casual relationship with no view to commitment, so I really like our arrangement. Like you I've also gone overseas quite a bit and had some free money to treat myself well instead of spending it all on living expenses. Selfish and immature perhaps, but I totally love it.

Nattieb I really don't think living at home will put guys off - it's really common nowadays and you can always go to a boyfriend's place if your parents don't like him sleeping at yours! If anything, I have found that living at home is kind of good in regards to guys because i have NEVER brought someone home after a drunk night, and I actually don't date guys that I wouldn't want my mum to meet. But anyway you're only 26 so there's heaps of time to settle down yet - I'm quickly getting tired of the "young marriage" phenomenon, but that's a whole other thread.

My partner and I are renting in WA but own a house in Victoria. Where we are now is nice, we have a massive yard with lots of palm trees (which are miraculously still standing after the cyclone) - great for BBQs and parties with friends, the beach is about 50m from our front door (unswimmable though :( ) but the local pool is only around the corner :)

we moved back in with my folks when i was pregnant with no.1. they had a very large rumpus room downstairs, so hubby & dad made it into a 3 bed flat with our own kitchen & b/room. sometimes it's great [rent & most bills free]:glee: amazing i know :redcheeks: but the lack of space & privacy & cooking facilities [i don't have a hob] can be frustrating at times, but like i said this is a deal of a lifetime , we r very lucky

We rent from the State Government. Have done for 4.5 years. We did have a house, but due to illness and job loss, we lsot it to the bank 5 years ago. We moved in with Mum & Dad for 6 months while trying to find a place.

Live with hubby, Mr 18, Mr 12, the cat and 2 outside dogs. Until April we had Mr 22, his partner, and their baby as well.

it's a 3 bedroom place, just big enough for us all. I just wish we could scrap the woodheater though.

I'd never buy again, it's too damn hard. And once Mr 12 has finished school, I think I'll want to shift somewhere warmer - I love Tassie, but the joints are already telling me they don't.

Nattieb and others at hoome - you have no need at all to justify that, any more than I need to justify my decision to never buy again. It's a personal thing, and comes down to what works for you.

I have the 21 years rule. If you aren't at school, working and/or working to a specific and attainable goal, then you best be packing your bags. Freeloaders are not welcome, unless it's a stay here or sleep in the car type thing, and then only short term. Harsh, but effective. Mr 18 pays $150 p/f, covers food, power, phone and clothing expenses. I buy the lot, he uses me as his bank.

I reckon Mr18 will maybe last til the end of next year, and then shift. I think he'll go to Melbourne :tears:

Well - I am bored so am reviving this thread whilst i wait for Smashbox to come on TVSN :chuckle:

I live in an apartment on Lygon street - we are the top floor of a 4 story building and it's only 3 years old. It is a ridiculously large apartment for a 2 bedroom, and having the lift certainly made moving easy! I will post a few piccies below. We have an AWESOME view of the city and our balcony is almost as big as our apartment (I s*** you not!!) :worship:

I live with a friend - well "friend" - We've known each other for three years and worked at the same place but since living with him it has brought out all the stuff that made me actually not like him when we first met! (Should never ignore my instincts!!) I can't wait until the lease is up start of next year but am not sure what I will do, and I'm too scared to live by myself, and feel a bit anxious about going back now. :shakehead:

Four days after we moved in (we also moved from interstate so was a big move!) My purse got stolen and I lost EVERYTHING - which then meant I couldn't buy any furniture until I got my replacement cards (which was an ordeal in itself - it took me 6 weeks to get them - long story =/) And it would escape Mr Roomate to thing about buying anything, so my mattress stayed in the lounge room so i could sit on it, my bed frame was in my room. My parents drove over and brought my pink bean bag and 2 folding chairs and my ottoman so I then moved my mattress and that was our lounge setting - ALL CLASS hehe.

Since I've been away I have FINALLY had my sofa delivered and my white fluffy rug - I can't wait to fill it up when I get back. I'm dying for a dining table to sit at for my computer and to do my uni work.

I live with my boy and his parents, he had his own place but quit his job to travel overseas and had alot of debt so he moved back in with his parents 18months ago and then I slowly just moved in here, we don't pay rent or board just our share of water and electricity and buy our own food! It works in everyones favour as his parents are both sick now and I cook and clean and nurse for them. The house is a 4 bedroom house with two living areas, a study and a massive backyard which we are currently re-landscaping, I am also preparing walls ready to be freshly painted as it has not been done in years! We are saving for own place and when i graduate from uni we will purchase a home of our own, with our current financial plan we will be able to buy and completely pay off our own home within 5 years! So in the end it will all be worth it. The one thing I would change would be the carpet in the bathroom which i hope to do very soon...

Oh how exciting about your new place!!!!!!!!!!!! I can'twait to get my frist place either. That is a wonderful thing you are doing for your boyfriends parents, you should be proud of yourself!! Would be keen to hear about this financial plan (I love numbers and plans and stuff - hencemy accounting/finance major hehe) :waving:

I hope to get my own little place the middle of next year, if something happens before then thats great but for now I'm still at home, because I'm back at uni Im only paying $50 p/week board but when I worked full time I paid $150 p/week and paid for the internet and phone usage. I probably buy $50 to $100 p/month towards food. I would love a little apartment/unit - I need to get a 2 bedroom so I can get a flatmate to help pay mortgage, its becoming increasingly harder to get into the housing market so I need to soon if I want to invest.

Loolabelle, its not always about impact with floods of colour. I fill space with varying textures and a splash of subtle or vibrant colour. :waving:

LOL Does that mean they're ugly?? :chuckle:

ATM there is NO colour at all in the apartment (Unless my roomate bought something, which if he did I'd die from shock) and want a few spalshes of colour on the couch. I wonder where is a good place for cushions in Melbourne.. I def agree about the texture thing!! Something contemporary, funky but not over the top, a couple of different sizes/textures.

I don't think they're ugly! I mean I wouldn't put all of them on one couch, but maybe you could use one bright one and then have more neutral ones surrounding...

Yeah, VeeE, that's what I was thinking! Like a multi colour one, then a neutral black/grey one, then maybe a block colour one. It's a big couch, a 3 seater plus chaise, so lotsa room.

Im going to be really nosey and ask where you a couple when you moved in together? and are you still a couple now?

Nice apartment, great 4 drinkies and central for shopping lol

The boy and I are eventually going to build a house in Melbourne. We have the block now we just have to find an architect to design our dream house.

My vision is Black Carpet and polished floor boards throughout. I want hot pink couches with black cushions. I want all the bathroom appliances (bath, shower etc) to be black with white accessories. I want a Pink fridge also. My boy has said two words to my requests "NO WAY"!! Thinking I might have to compromise a bit so will let him decorate his study how he wants!

I like them all, esp No 4.
Cushions are such a great & cheap way to update a room.

I have my dining table and chairs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The table is even nicer than I remembered so really happy. I did have to put it together which was pretty funny - about 2 minutes in I kicked it and almost called the boy at work to leave and come help, but then ditched the stupid instructions and I was a regular MacGyver. :glee:

Today I wil get a vase for it, and going to look at cushions (after I swing past adore and pick up my Alchemy order, wooot!! :penguin::penguin::penguin:

Our house is looking more like a home now, with all the furniture in, even the bbg on the balcony!
Finishing touches never finish in my opinion, but we are loving our new home so much and i love buying new things for it!
