View Full Version : Where to 'spray' your perfume?

OK so I normally spray and do the walk through with my perfumes so it's all over me - so to speak. :hearts:

I've heard you shouldn't spray it on your décolletage area - has anyone else heard of this? Know why? Something to do with the delicate skin?

I also like to dab it on my wrists (but not rub!)

Your fragrance contains alcohol so it can dry out the skin. Also, going out into the sun can cause sensitivity and discolouration.

I am also careful not to rub my wrists together - apparently not to "bruise" the fragrance!

I do the spray and walk through too nattieb - I also try to put it on straight out of the shower. Seems to last much longer and you just get a hint when up close, not lingering in the room for hours after you leave it!

Funny how it can smell different on your wrist to your neck too...must be the way the warmth reacts with different parts of the body...also how disappointing is it when a perfume you love in the bottle reacts really badly on the skin? This happens for me every now and again, particularly with perfume oils as opposed to EDTs/EDPs.

I like to Spray on my wirsts, the back of my knees and then I spray and walk into it after I am dressed. I layer my fragrances with matching shower gels, soaps and lotions most of the time.

I spray behind my neck, on the wrists and elbows and if I am going out at night i put some in my hair (on the under layers). It is ok to wear it on the decolletage but not if you are going to be in bright sunlight.

I go a bit silly with my spraying :ashamed:. My neck, back of my neck, decolletage, the underside of my upper arms, and sometimes if its a balm or oil i'll put it on my temples.

i also tend to keep away from spraying on my decolatage as i have sensitive skin around that area. So i spray on the wrists, underside on tops of arms and sometimes around my tummy.

I spray in really random places ha ha :o

There are two main things to note when spraying your perfume and making it last long. I recommend spraying on your wrists and your glands on your neck. I also recommend when you select your perfume that you should purchase the edp as it last longer and its not consentrated

Welcome PurScent!

Thanks for the tips! Layering your fragrance with complementing body products will also make it last longer and as you have said, anywhere there are main arteries will "warm" your scent. You can really notice the difference in staying power between EDT's and EDP's! Worth the extra splurge.

yep don't rub your skin as it changes the frangrance - so wrists & behind your neck are the best places.

Rubbing the wrists actually bruises the notes in the fragrance which will make your fragrance not only smell different but also not last as long. It's best to spray and let it settle on its own.

my wrists, back of my neck and I will spray a little on my back...

While edp's are usually stronger it does depend on what is actually in the fragrance, these days some edp's are very light as that is the fashion. Also it is not always a matter of strength, some such as Coco Mademoiselle are actually quite differerent frangrances with different notes. You won't always hear that from the SA (though the Chanel ladies generally know their products).

Also I do think this business of bruising the molecules is a myth. I cannot find any scientific basis for it. I sometimes think it is just "a thing to say" as far as sales folk go. I think it just gives them something to say to sound knowledgeable.

As to where to spray, all personal preference. I like the arms and if it is a really light one the neck. I'm a fairly generous sprayer so have never done the walk through thing. I think the way the fragrance evolves and then dries down to the basenotes may differ on the clothes than on warm skin.

I am also a generous sprayer and prefer the EDP's, have never done a walk through a mist either. I spray neck, wrists, arms, backs of knees, hair, clothes and between my (ample!) bosom!

I usually do one spray on the neck/decolletage (yeah yeah I know it's bad for the fragrance and bad for my skin, i'm trying to break the habit), one spray on each wrist, and one on my tummy up under my shirt. The last one seems funny I know, but it works!

My décolletage is the first place I spray my perfume. It makes me feel so sensual and womanly when I spray between my 'bosom' as Luisa B put it- I love the opulence of it! I also like the gentle wafts of scent that lift from my décolletage - as does my beau ;)

I am extremely frivilous with my perfume. I spray it anywhere and everywhere and never worry about wasting etc (god knows I have enough of it to waste). I own hundreds of edt strength and hundreds of edp strength fragrances and I don't really have a preference for either. Just as long as it smells good and isn't too overpowering for other people I dont mind.

As far as bruising the notes of a fagrance by rubbing wrists together is concerned I tend to stand by the theory. This is because I have a couple of Michael Edwards fragrance books and he specifically says not to rub wrists together. He knows far more about perfume than I do so I am sticking with him.

I sometimes get a bit cheeky and apply a fragrance to my wrists then rub the matching body lotion over the top and then reapply the fragrance again. Just me being experimental!

However I urge you all to put the theory to the test for yourself and put on some perfume and rub your wrists together and see if you notice a difference or not in it's smell and longevity of the fragrance.

He taught me that when I did his fragrance course. I still unwittingly rub them together though!

I put edt's on my elbows, knees and back of my neck. My MMS I spray all over, and in my hair (it's formulated to do that thankfully).

I used to spray there too, but I found that I started breaking out really badly...so now I guess I'll just have to stick with wrists and neck *sigh*

ps. I just discovered Adore yesterday...and I'm absolutely LOVING IT (no better way to spend a stupidly hot public holiday)

Hello there a.gasper! Welcome!

That is odd about the perfume/break outs. Are you sure it was the perfume?

And Loola - your crotch??

Maybe I'm just being paranoid (it's easy to be paranoid when your chest breaks out in disgusting pimples) but I'm pretty sure it was the perfume because it's the only thing I apply to the vicinity. Any other suggestions?

Was it all fragrances or just a particular house/fragrance?
