Hi

Just wondering if there is anyone else out there with Keratosis Pilaris (KP) - or ugly chicken skin!? :vomit:

I have this (and so does my mum and one of my brothers - have been told it's hereditary), and have been using the DermaDoctor KP Duty cream for a few months now.

The cream seems to have helped clear up the actual 'bumps' a little and it is much better than what it was before I used the cream, but the red dots that I have (which may just be more noticeable on me because I have very pale skin) won't seem to improve.

Does anyone have KP, or use any other products that they have had success with? I'm also finding that if I don't use the cream it comes back very quickly and it's quite expensive.

Thanks! :typing:

Nat,

I have the exact same problem... KP and fair skin. I really hate it!! I have photos of myself at my 21st and it's all I can see.:explode:
I have found that the Derma Doctor does help somewhat, but it doesn't completly remove the problem. I have started using Alpha-H Liquid Gold on the area, and that seems to have also made a difference.
Good luck and keep me posted if you find anything that is a miracle cure.

Me too!! I have it on my upper arms (and it's increasingly starting to appear on my forearms too). My brother also has it (a lot worse than I do) and my dermatologist said there's nothing you can really do about it. I have found that using L'oreal Pure Zone Exfoliating Scrub and the toner from the same range (applied with cotton pad as you would to your face) helps a bit, however if I miss it for a couple of days it comes back. It's not really worth it as it's a bit of a pain in the bum and the effect is minimal.

I would love love loooooooove to hear about anything that has helped in a major way!

I too have very pale skin - maybe we all need to go out and get a tan...I don't see Gisele or Adriana Lima with KP! But on that note, I've been wondering if a light-coloured spray tan might do something to disguise the bumps? I'm not into spray tans as I think pale skin suits me, but I'd be willing to do it if it meant by ugly red bumps weren't so noticeable. Have either of you guys had success with spray tans?

Yeah me too. I hate the redness more than anything - some days it is better than others. I've been told getting out in the sun can't help but it doesn't seem to have (and I can hear everyone gasping - sun! - no way!)

Ozkat, do try the Derma Doctor KP Duty! It's does make a difference and it far less effort that scrubs etc.

Thank goodness I'm not alone! :p

I use a scrub (normally just a body shop type one) at least twice a week and that helps with the actual bumps but not the 'dots' left behind. I try to use the KP duty daily.

Ozkat, I'm also finding they are now showing up on my forearms.. I know I didn't always get them there!

My brother has it worse too, he has them on his arms, chest and a little bit on his upper thighs - he's into body building and shaves his arms and I've noticed his don't seem to be as noticeable as mine, but not sure I'm willing to shave/wax my arms just to find out!

Also, when I was on holidays last year I was in the sun quite a bit (didn't burn!) but got up a gradual tan and they seemed to go away - but came back as soon as I stopped going in the sun - and as you know being pale it's not an option!

I will definitely try the Derma Doctor KP Duty. I'm willing to give anything a try!!

Every instinct I has says "don't go out in the sun, it's very bad for you!!!" but I do keep wondering whether getting some sun on my upper arms would help a bit. It's a weigh-up, I guess, between short term gain and long-term punishment.

I'm all for a LITTLE bit of sun.. I think it's healthy, makes you feel good and if you are careful about it you won't do too much damage.

In saying that, I'm about to get a referral to see a dermatoligist to make sure my skin is in tip top shape and how to keep it looking that way for years to come, so we'll see what they say about a LITLLE bit of sun1

The DermaDoctor website also have a scrub that you can use with the KP duty - but I don't think Adore stock that just yet.

I've actually got the Alpha H scrub which seems quite good, but not sure I'd say it's any better than a body shop one (well not that I can tell the difference anyway!)

A glycolic body scrub in addition to a lotion like KP Duty can help. MD Formulations Face & Body Scrub is a good one, as is Ultraceuticals Ultra Clear Exfoliating Gel or Alpha-H Micro Cleanse.

For those finding KP Duty too expensive, Ultraceuticals Ultra ACE Body Treatment Cream is quite similar and slightly cheaper.

Kewl, I was just starting to think that the cost was going to be prohibitive for long-term treatment.

Hey gals,

I agree with kate on the MD formulations face and body scrub for sure. It has fantastically fine granules and lots of them along with the glycolic in it.

I would also use a riffi mitt in the shower too these are super cheap and machine washable: http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=5465

You could also use the MD formulations Pedi creme: http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=3884
this has a very high glycolic component. Designed for feet :)

Hope this helps!

I'll be ordering something soon so will give these a go!

I have some very dry heels at the moment too so it could be a double whamy product for me! :p

Sure thing Celestefay - I'll be the guinea pig and will let you know! :spin:

I just saw in the chemist that the Neo-Strata range has a lotion with 10% glycolic in it for 40ish bucks which is designed for rough dry skin, so I might give it a go before I delve into the KP Duty.

Ozkat, if you go for the Neo Strata, choose the one in the white and dark blue box (not the one in the grey and white). It has 15% glycolic acid.

Well I've been using Neo Strata for about two weeks now, and there is some improvement to the KP on my upper arms. It feels a bit smoother but the bumps are still noticeable. The problem is, I'm getting some itching and sensitivity on the insides of my elbows (my "elbow pits"). I am prone to exczema (my dermatologist reckons that if you're prone to KP you're also prone to exczema, allergies, hayfever and asthma - lucky me!) and I think it's starting to pop up in these little patches....nooooo!!!

Can I just say I'm so sick of problem skin!!! My skin on my face and decolletage is great which I'm thankful for, but otherwise I have KP, stretch marks (I get them when I put on one gram, my brother does too) and exczema on my lower legs and ankles (that's clearing up thank God!). LOL I sound like a pox-ridden leper, I'm really not, but I am a master whinger. I'd like to exchange my whole skin for a new one, thanks.

Luisa Brown

Ozkat, are you taking the lotion down to your elbows? If not, hopefully it is unrelated to the lotion. Do be careful though, this one has 15% glycolic acid.

Luisa, I'm taking the lotion all the way down to my wrists because the KP is present on my forearms too (although it's not raised and bumpy, there are red dots in the hair follicles). Perhaps I should just keep it to my upper arms seeing as I can probably live with the dots on my forearms. I don't put it on the inside of my arms though (obviously there's no KP on the insides of my arms because it only occurs where there are hair follicles), I think it just sort of gathers in my elbow pit when I bend my arm repeatedly.

Hey ozkat

know what you mean - I put my KP dute on my forearms too because I have both the dots AND the lumps down there now - a rather new development from the last 6 months or so.

I also get exczema on my eyelids - there is a name for this apparently - and my GP told me to just wash the eyelids with baby shampoo.. I also have a special cream for this. But this I know is stress releated and I only get it when I'm super stressed about something so that's good.

*sigh* if only there was a cure-all....

Hi Ozkat, sorry about my ignorance, thought you only got KP on upper arms. It is true, even if you limit the application to the forearms that some of the product could "migrate" to more sensitive areas, in your case the inner elbow skin. Perhaps let the eczema clear up and give it another go, hopefully it is not related to the lotion. Good luck.

Hi nattieb! I used to suffer really badly from eczema on just one eyelid. Got it when I was really stressed. Doctors usually recommend baby shampoo for a condition called blepharis which is like a dandruff of the eyebrows and eyelashes. Despite being made for babies, it contains a ton of detergents so please see if you need another recommendation. For gentle cleaning, there is a product called Lidcare which now takes the place of baby shampoo. It comes in a bottle packed in a box with lint free cotton wipes. Make sure you use one for each eye. Do you get any discharge from the eye itself or crusty "sleep dust" when you wake up?

nattieb

Hi Luisa

Hmm it's not like dandruff or anything, it really is more like dry scaly skin... it gets rather itchy when I do get it and I normally wake up with puffy eyes because I've been itching in my sleep. :shakehead:

Can't remember the name of the cream the GP gave me (as well as the shampoo recommendation!) but it's a steroid type cream.. it does the trick, eventually.

The Lidcare sounds good - can I just pick this up at the chemist? Or do I need a script from the dr?

And no, no discharge really.. just the normal 'sleep dust' that I get even when I'm not stressed.

Hey nattieb,

Doesnt sound like blepharis, that's when you get crusting along the lash base. You shouldnt need the baby shampoo. Cream is good but use it sparingly. You should use it as often as it was recommended (eg twice a day) until it clears up. Many people are scared of using cortisone creams but the best way to use them is intensively and not a bit here and there so you actually shorten the time it is used.

You can get Lidcare from the chemist, should be in the eye drops section. Discharge and crusty corners of the eyes usually indicates an infection and needs to be treated differently.

I have the damn KP on my upper arms as well. I hate it with a passion and find if I exfoliate with MD Formulations face and body scrub it does improve. However I am yet to find anything that improves it dramatically yet!

Me neither PCC. Various products improve it a little bit but don't eliminate it. I'm sure it's something that only we notice - no one else has ever commented or asked about it. It still bothers me enormously though!

Something funny though - I never had skin problems all through my childhood and teenage years. I first got exczema at 21 and KP started to develop about a year ago (I'm 24 now). Before then I had the world's most resilient skin and I could use any product (hence my 30 shower gels that used to live in my shower...now I only have one unscented one - booohooo!) Who ever heard of growing INTO skin problems?

Hi Gals!!
I haven't been on here all week!! Withdrawl !!! Just finished a 57 hr week EERRK!! and I'm shagged.

Wish I had found this thread earlier!! I am utterly obsessed with Keratosis Polaris.

KP is a bulid up of Keratin (skin cells), it's an over production that forms little pillars down the follicle. Obviously we arent meant to have little skin cell pillars in our follicles so thus inflammation and itchthyosis (the technical name for itching heehee:rollthoseeyes: ) come with.

Unfortunately this is hereditary condition so you technically cant "cure" it or get rid of it forever. But just like you cant get rid of freckles but you can fade them out to nothing even if they still lie in hidding deep in the dermis, you cant get rid of the visible signs of KP!! But it takes maintenance and I'm sorry but it is constant.

YES THERE IS HOPE!!

The mid set you have to have is that exfoliation of any form is your friend. PEELS ROCK FOR KP!! In salon that is :worship: and even microdermabrasion if you can get your friendly local salon to customise a treatment for your area. It works like little packmen to munch up the excess skin cells. You will need a course of these to get the best results. But if you over do it you can irritate it even more. :explode:

Vitamin A is your KP's worst enemy. :whipcrack: This vitamin works to renew the skin and speeded up the skin cells shedding. Ultraceuticals Ultra A Serum is UNREAL FOR KP!!

My Bf has Kp on his arms and I have been attacking him with U/C ULTRA A SERUM and after just a week they are just about gone. :clapping:  I scrub him in the shower with Dermalogica's Exfoliating Body Scrub about 3 times a week then slop the serum on every night. Its a great way to churn through an $86 serum. Lucky he's the one paying for it!! heehee :clapping:

Remember: VIT A IS ONLY FOR NIGHT NIGHTS. Unless you want KP free skin with hyperpigmentation :shakehead:

The MD scrub is MY FAVOURITE SCRUB EVER!! nice little beads to really get into those follicles and the glycolic gives a bonus kick.
Lactic Acid is a little more hydrating and not quite as aggressive as Glycolic (not that im bashing glycolic but it can be a bit irritating sometimes due to its tiny molecular size) So if your going to hit the chemist look for something with heaps of Lactic. Ultraceuticals Peels are 30% and 50% Lactic Acid. Wooo!! Zapp that KP!! I know Allison has these at Adore.

DONT FOR GET TO KEEP YOU FRESHLY EXFOLIATED SKIN PROTECTED WITH A 30++. One with micronised zinc is best you dont get that greasy white sheen. Adore have heaps.

Sun helps and so does the swimming in the ocean. Only if its REALLY inflammed. Salt water is great for drying any angry semi-infected anything. The sun stimulates the skins Vit D production which causes a burst of new cells (which causes old ones to be pushed off). Like flowers in the sun. But like anything do it in MODERATION!.

Good Luck gals Let me know how you go!

Much Love

Hi guys. I wanted to bump this thread and tell you that I have been using Neo Strata Skin Smoothing Lotion in both 10% and 15% glycolic formulations and my KP has almost disappeared. I have combined this with twice-weekly use of a scrub and daily mild exfoliation with a shower puffy thing. My skin still has the red dots but they are not raised or bumpy or scratchy. My friends say that you can hardly notice them. PLEASE guys, if your KP is troubling you, give Neo Strata a shot. You can get it at most chemists and it's around the $30-40 dollar mark (shop around, prices vary). One bottle should last you a good three or four months so it's a worthwhile investment.

Hi everyone

much has been said about KP already, here are just my few tips:

Lactic Acid is the best keratolytic (makes the top layer of the skin smooth) in KP and can be mixed into Sobelene cream or Aqueous cream. Percentage: no more than 10% if you have eczema, otherwise eczema will flare up again.
I think you'd be better off to see a dermatologist once to get a script for that rather than pay lots of money for cosmetics that may ormay not have the right ingredients. There are also a couple of other "tricks" the dermatologist could prescibe for "social emergencies" in KP (wedding etc)
But otherwise: Neostrata is a good idea, but be careful to use their 15% Glycolic acid Lotion plus in moderation only (and moisturize well) as it will aggrevate skin prone to eczema.
If you overdo it (exfoliate and use glycolic acid) your skin might get worse

Sahne you're right about not overdoing it with the Neostrata, I did get a tiny patch of eczema inside my elbow but it went away in about a week. I should also add that I started with the 10% glycolic and graduated to the 15% after a few weeks. I tried lactic acid preparations on the advice of my dermatologist but they didn't work for me at all.

I've been doing the "tan at night, KP treatment in the morning" thing, but I'm basically going around in circles because the tan doesn't have a chance to build up before it is all exfoliated off the next morning!!

Oz, the Alpha-H Body Polish is for the body what microcleanse is for the face. You rub it in until it disolves and the glycolics eat all the dried, dead and damaged skin. If you follow with the Alpha-H Colour Creator ( it also has glycolics ), you will end up with a great tan that will last for days and your skin will remain smooth.

Them: God I don't know how you find the time or the money for all that stuff anyway! God I can barely be bothered to moisturise in the morning! I'm just so busy and stressed I don't know how anyone has the time to do any of that stuff.

Them: God I don't know how you find the time or the money for all that stuff anyway! God I can barely be bothered to moisturise in the morning! I'm just so busy and stressed I don't know how anyone has the time to do any of that stuff.
Me: (saying nothing but secretly feeling guilty and shallow and superficial because I spend money on products and not on a mortgage......before remembering that it's great to be a FAB girl with BEAUTIFUL skin and hair and FANTASTIC nails painted in a chic colour and not A BORING OLD FART!).

Sorry. Bit P.O.d with my friends lately.

Hey you, i have a mortgage and still spend ANY spare money on clothes, hair, skin and girly stuff :chuckle: :chuckle: and would have TOALLY understood the whole fake tanning, aha taking off the fake tan drama!!

Haha thanks P_S! Was just in a mood yesterday - a couple of friends have made comments about how they don't know how I can be bothered finding the time or money (?!! - a tube of self-tanner is like 30 bucks and I'm a uni student!) to do the whole fake tan thing. Basically it translates to "gosh, I'm so busy and stressed with my important life, I don't have time to do those superficial things - your life must be pretty empty if you have time for it!". I know I'm oversensitive but I still resent it! Especially since my mum worked full-time, raised three kids, had a marriage and friends and STILL had time to maintain a perfect fake tan! It's in my genes I tell ya! :chuckle:

Girls Girls Girls!!

Warm weather causes a speed up in our oil and our cell production. Your Kp is getting worse because there are more dead skin cells building up as little pillars in your follicle :flames:

You muuuust try vitamin A!! Trust me TURST ME!! U/c Diminsh would be awwwwesome or skin ceuticals 0.5% Retinol and give the area a good and regular scrub with scrub and glove combo. Dont wont to irritate the area tho so go easy.:whipcrack:

Love to know how u go!! :waving::hugs:

I think I'm resigned to the fact that my KP will never fully go away. Right now it's not rough, it's quite soft and only slightly bumpy. It's not so much bumps as just red dots, which my fake tan hides reasonably well. Honestly, I can't be bothered thinking about it anymore, especially not with the KP-and-fake-tan combo!! Too much work!! :chuckle:

Me too Oz! :penguin:

I'm actually not using anything on my KP at the moment.. just using exfoliating gloves and scrubs and then lathering on my tanneriser... the dots aren't as noticeable with the tanneriser on. BUT might consider the vitamin A (TBA - what ones do you recommend?)

Am looking at my KP right now.. gosh it's ugly! Seriously!

What is this Hei Poa oil, VeeE? Sounds great.

I have a confession - I have KP too and I am also pale! My upper arms get KP and my lower/forearms get this thing called folliculitus (spelling may be wrong) which involves my hair follicles becoming clogged with bacteria. I get this more in the change of seasons and it is really itchy and red and inflamed - sometimes the follicles get little heads on them and if I pop them (:redcheeks:) they flare up almost swelling like a very miniature hive. Anyway, my skin is prone to odd conditions like this. No eczema though! I did have acne as a teenager though.

I have just started using liquid gold on my kp and will also begin using an old tube of UC A facial cream as well as it is too rich for my face. xo

Yea OZ its fine to still take. Just check out if it contains any of the same ingredients. You do have to be care not to OD on Vit A because it is processed and stored in your liver and can be toxic in larger quantities. Large quantities like Roaccutane not like a little vitamin supplement tho.
Hair skin and nails are normally Sillica so you should be fine :waving:

Hey Saph,That new routine sounds great. A combination of the LG and A Cream will do wonders for your KP.

Vee this oil sounds great but me is thinking it might have been more the exfoliation that helped more so than the oil itself. The oils will be great for nourishing tho and helping to ease dryness and scally build up related to KP, so in that respect it is also beneficial. :waving:

Hiya TBA! Actually I don't think it was the exfoliating, because I have been exfoliating my arms for years and I haven't had much result. It's the oil I swear! Hehe thanks for thinking of me, darling VeeE!!! I might have to look into this oil - I thought it sounded beautiful when you first mentioned it. I love oils!! I have a Diva Cosmetics oil that has mostly grapeseed, and my KP always feels good after I use it too. Hmmm I wonder if TBS Monoi Oil would work too?? VeeE does the oil from Kit feel greasy or is it one of those fast-absorbing dry oils? Oh and it doesn't bother me if it contains coconut oil.....I really only have a thing about that sort of fake-coconut smell that screams COCONUT, if it's real and subtle I don't mind too much!

It's a fast absorbing oil! It does leave a sheen, but a nice one not and gross, why don't you shower every once in a while one. I think you need to look out for coconut oil being one of the ingredients. TBS Monoi Oil might be good because Hei Poa is a Monoi Oil. If you go to Kit, you'll see that they have 6 or 7 different smells on the oil, the one I have is the one with sparkly bit in it- it's sooo pretty and not OTT!

By the way I keep going in to TBS to smell the Monoi body cream:redcheeks:I just walk in unscrew the lid smell it for about a minute and then walk out. They must think I'm such a weirdo.

Hehehe!! I'm a compulsive TBS smeller too! I probably buy something about one out of every six or seven times I go in there - they must be like "God, quit smelling everything and just BUY IT ALREADY!". It's the worst in TBS too cos all you want to do is smell things but you're surrounded by like forty shop assistants per square metre.

There's no Kit here so I'd have to buy the Hei Poa oil online, so I have to trust your advice VeeE! I think it sounds great though.....and hey, if I open it and hate the smell, I'll just close it back up again and give it to someone for Christmas! :redcheeks: I love the sound of it though, and I have a major love for anything Hawaiian or Pacific! I wish someone would throw me a surprise Luau. :shakehead:

I actually had a patch of bumps on my left arm, just around from my elbow. Over summer, I used Kit's tan building body lotion & it totally smoothed it out! It's got one of the hydroxy acids in it - not sure which one because on the bottle it says beta-hydroxy acids, but on the website it says alpha-hydroxy acids. Whatever HA's - they did a great job & the bumps haven't come back! :)

Apparently a lot of physical/granular exfoliation helps, plus acitves or vitamin A. I did a combo of loofa exfoliation plus UC Ultra A cream on my skin in the lead up to my wedding last year and it helped heaps - though it never completely went away.

I thought that I would just put my 2 cents worth in this thread. I have had bouts of KP (to varying degrees) throughout all of my adult life. I always hated the fact that the backs of my arms were 'bumpy' and looked terrible (although they were competing with freckles so they were a bit hidden to look at). I used to use one of those loofah gloves and religiously scrub each arm 50 times every morning - it sort of worked but it was never really gone. I have also used numerous salt/sugar scrubs. Again, only sort of worked.

However, I recently purchased a Riffi Mitt (yes, I'm banging on about it again) and I use it every morning in the shower. I also use a good moisturiser after my shower. My KP is completely gone (and as an added bonus, I have no ingrown hairs on my bikini line - I used to suffer terribly).

I cannot recommend this mitt highly enough. Now that I know they exist, I will always have one in my shower. :worship::worship:

I use it in conjunction with L'Occitane Almond Shower Oil (recommended by many lovelies on this forum). I don't think I would use it without anything as it would sort of pull the skin. The first two times I used it, it hurt (it's a bit like using the green scourer thing that you can get for the kitchen - I would think). At the time I thought that I would not be using it for very long. But after 2 days - I loved it. I actually dislike having a shower now without it. I do not take it travelling as it doesn't wring out very successfully. I was in Sydney Sunday Monday & Tuesday and the first thing I did when I got home Tuesday night was to have a shower - becasue I wanted to use the mitt, I felt like my skin needed it.

Oh gracious (thanks PCC), I'm a Riffi Mitt addict!
