My bestie is having her birthday dinner tonight at a restaurant in Collingwood. So of course I wanted to organise a cake for her. I phoned the restaurant to check whether they make cakes or whether I'd need to BYO. They charge $4 a head to serve a BYO cake... and they don't even make their own cakes!!
So for our party of 12 people it would be $48 for them to serve the cake. Plus the cost of the cake itself.
According to the girl on the phone, they "make lovely desserts". Well I'm sure they do, but it's not like you can stick candles in a panna cotta, can you??!

That is disgraceful. I've heard of this before - and other places charging 'waterage' (glasses of tap water mind you, not sparkling!).
As if you're not spending enough money at their establishment already. I say boycott!

So what have you decided to do Kate? If it wasnt tonight I would boycott too and make sure they knew they were missing out on your booking because of this excessive charge!

I've decided to get a cake and keep it at home, and get everyone to come back to my house for cake :)
It's really a bit ridiculous. I could understand it if they made their own cakes, but they don't!

Too true! Don't let it put a dampner on tonight though, have a lovely time. Should be a nice balmy night in Melbourne!

That is pretty lame of the restaurant to charge $4 ahead to cut up a cake that they don'r even have the skilled chefs to make.
If you had more time i'd also boycott the restaurant because it just shows you exactly what type of ppl they are.

Hi Kate
That's horrible!
We've had that problem before, we got around it by all ordering individual desserts and asking that a candle be put in the birthday girls dessert (it was a brownie or something that could take a candle)... still not quite the same but what can you do!?

I see this as a bit of a win actually as we get to have desert at the restaurant and cake later as well!
Mmmmm sweet sweet regrets.

Update: We had a cup cake at the bday and proper cake after. Best of both worlds.

That is really bad form. Some restaurants charge $4 per person corkage for wine too, which I find outrageous after you've already forked out for a bottle!
i do understand a small charge because the restaurant has to clean the plates etc, but it doesnt cost $4 a head to clean a plate! Ridiculous!!

For My brother's birthday we decided to get him a cake. He has a favourite cake so we got it made and delivered to the restaurant where his birthday celebrations were being held. The Restaurant was not impressed (because the cake was so super it literally shi****t all over what they could offer). They charged us $50 to keep the cake cool in their cool room and a further $5 cakeage for every one that had cake. I thought it was disgusting!
My parents paid for the entire function including everyones food and alcohol with the final account costing well over $3,000.
Needless to say my 30th celebrations this year will not be in the same venue. Considering there will be well over 100 people at my brithday I would say that is a big loss for them.

That charge is outrageous but I thought I would lighten the mood by sharing a funny BYO cake to the resturant story.
It was my sister's birthday & we were at a chinese restuarant (no cakeage). When it came time to serve the cake the (chinese) waiter proceeded to "cut" it at the table with a spoon & fork held in one hand. You know like how they serve rice at the table, it was exactly the same. We are just sat there stunned as he mangled a perfectly lovely chocalate sponge with choc cream frosting. :shakehead:

:chuckle: Wow!
I think customers should get their own back and charge restaurants "jerkage"
