If you only had fifty dollars to spend on skincare/makeup and were not allowed to use any other products other than those you got with your fifty dollars, what would you buy and why?

Luisa Brown

Only $50!! Going to have to think about this one!

Kate (Staff)

Oh lord... I don't think I could do it! I have to have a good sunscreen and that's at least $12 right there... and then mascara, I couldn't live without that, even Maybelline is around $12 these days... and then a lip balm, I could skimp a bit there, but I'd be almost up to $30 before I even got to cleanser and moisturiser, let alone blusher!

Haha! I thought this one would throw a spanner in the works! How could we beauty junkies possibly be expected to get all our products for under fifty dollars:)

I don't think you could have presented a more difficult challenge, pinkcupcake, who could do this?!

I'd have to choose skincare over makeup but if I bought Paw Paw ointment, you could double up sometimes!! (pimple treatment, rash treatment, dry skin, but also a lip balm!) I'd use Neutrogena Cream Cleanser and make my own scrubs out of oils, sugar and salt, and purchase a Nivea or Olay moisturizer. Then I'd buy Covergirl Clean Makeup because it's very cheap with no nasties, and use the rest (if there's any at this stage) to buy an Australis Cheek and Lip Tint. Then I would go home and cry...

I've noticed a plethora of women who claim they truly cannot live without mascara, and wear it every single day. Is it so essential? The only times I wear it are church, weddings and dates! Admittedly, I do have illegally long, black eyelashes but never liked them much because it made buying sunglasses and prescriptions glasses quite traumatic, and because they actually slightly obstruct my vision! I read things on the packet that claim it can totally transform you look, do you agree that if you weren't wearing your mascara you would look differently?

I have not-very-long light-brown eyelashes that are pretty much invisible unless I wear mascara  so yes, it does make me look very different! I look very tired and a bit sick without mascara :p

lol, okay, it's official then, mascara is a must for most women. :)

Luisa Brown

I would (reluctantly!!) check out a budget range like Australis or Coral Colours. I would buy a tinted moisturiser (hopefully with sunscreen built in), a mascara and a lipgloss- my bare essentials!.....Now, putting that into reality....mmmmm??

Ok, this is probably the hardest question.. but I'd have to agree and go with skincare over makeup. If I had any money left over I'd buy a foundation and bronzer. I have long dark eyelashes already, so I can forego the mascara :)

What if you spent $50 in cash and then put the rest on a credit card - which we all know isn't reeeeealllly spending money... then can we still say we only spent $50?!

Kate (Staff)
01-11-2006, 11:24 AM
I reckon what you'd have to do is get lots of things on sale, so then you would have extra money (i.e. all the money you "saved") to spend.

For example, if you buy a cleanser that is reduced from $15 to $10, surely that would mean you had an extra $5 to spend?

melita,

try curling your lashes with a heated curler if they are getting in the way- the rest of us wish that was the case for us!

lash envy! :)

*Milo*
01-11-2006, 05:41 PM
Thanks for the tip, Alison :) I have never actually tried an eyelash curler as I thought it's always been a bit frivolous to put any care into my eyelashes (also, whenever I come close to trying people yell at me to put it down and saying I don't need it), but I'll give it a go and see what results I get. Hopefully nothing to drag queen or I'm a stripper (which mascara tends to do to me, all except clear). Thanks! I also noticed that the posts kept being an hour ahead of mine and was thinking, that's not right! until it finally clicked that you Sydney/Melbourne people are an hour ahead! It's now finally making sense to my poor Brisbanite head :)

Ok girls, since it was me that initiated this challenge I decided it was only fair that I hit the shops with $50 to see what I could get!

Here's where I went:

Priceline - Didn't have much joy there!

K-Mart - Hmmmm Just couldn't buy that lip gloss and eye shadow for a dollar ninety five each!

Chemist - Had a huge selection of various cosmetics but they just didn't float my boat! I thought about buying cetopyl (or whatever its called) but visions of all the beautiful brands elsewear started to control my mind!

Next Stop Myer - surely they would have some great stuff for a reasonable price?
One Hour and three hundred and sixty seven dollars later I left. Ok I failed the challenge but atleast I tried!:o

(Boring) essentials: Dermaveen oatmeal soapfree wash as a cleanser- very cheap but makes my skin so smooth and calm- about $12-15; Clinique Super City Block- about $35- moisturising and the very light tint evens out my skintone; cheapest mascara I can find- I have very long lashes but they are virtually invisible! But I am over my limit already...luckily I have oily skin so I could forego a night moisturiser..

hmmm. I couldn't buy a single item in my current lineup of must-haves with only fifty dollars, let alone my whole regime! :( Haha I love the credit card idea :P. Ummm....to be honest, I wouldn't be able to choose. :( i really hope i never go broke. that would make me very un-pretty.

This is definitely the hardest question i have had in a long time!!!

I like the idea of just using the credit card! Nice thinking ;)

Melita - i have the exact same problem! my eyelashes are long and i cant wear sunglasses without them touching the lens :o but i find mascara is great as it keeps my lashes looking neat

Oh yes, even if i have a so called 'make-up free day' i still have to wear mascara, i tell mself its not blocking my pores so it doesnt count.

If feel like an albino without mascara, i think if you have dark hair you need to dark lashes as well.

Haha! I thought this one would throw a spanner in the works! How could we beauty junkies possibly be expected to get all our products for under fifty dollars:)

Is this truly possible ...

I love Dr Hauschka I still have sufficient amounts of cleanser, toner and moisturiser - but in a month or maybe 2 months at the most I'll be out... I am restricting myself to using my cleansing cream 1x p/wk - so it will last because I just can't justify $33 on one product that although does a brilliant job but does go down the drain... so I am happy to pay for a decent moisturiser (I only need a day one as I don't use a night cream) ...

I have a very very strict budget! ... I have a very limited income which must go towards petrol, food, board etc ... as I am at uni full time!!!

other points to consider - change of season i.e sunscreen very important so I had considered a multipurpose product such as Megan Gales spf 30, skin type normal (a little dry on my forehead but other ok), preference given to natural or chemical free etc skincare - I don't have any spare funds to get it wrong

I won't dismiss any rec's ...

Your thoughts...

$50 an absolute maximum!!!

cleanser (prefer milky/cream)
moisturiser or sunscreen product (multi purpose maybe??)
Any other products ...

I've already got
new - eye gel so that's ok as I use only a little... (akin eye day gel)
I'll be alright for exfoliator as I am going to make my current one last ...

Ooooh I can't believe I missed this thread! Fun!

- Neutrogena cleanser - around $12
- Nivea spf 15+ moisturiser - $8 (oh dear I'm up to $20 already)
- Nivea non-spf moisturiser $8
- Australis mascara - $9
- Australis little kit thingy with lipgloss and blush in it - $15

Shit. I'm already over. And does this include things like soap, shampoo/conditioner and deodorant?! ARGH I have gone into panic over a hypothetical situation!

Edit: it let me say shit!! :penguin:

Alice, don't skimp on exfoliation as this is an important step to healthy skin. If you cannot purchase one, make sure you use a face washer to naturally exfoliate your skin in preparation for your other products. Good luck!

I think we should each buy one product up to $50 in value and all pile into PCC's bathroom and have a little facial/makeover party.

Doesnt clarins do little packs at sale time for $36 ish dollars??? The little half sized products of cleanser toner and something else??? Then get the clarins lady to throw in a whole lot of samples (eye cream, Beauty flash, tinted moistuiser etc) and a cheapy mascara like maybelline :chuckle:

Is that $50??!!!

I would love to be able to do my beauty shopping in the supermarket and I really dont mean to sound like a beauty snob in saying this but I JUST CANT DO IT!! :shakehead::whistle::whipcrack:

PCC you crack me up. I love hear ng about your shopping escapades!! :hugs::waving:

Melita: I have serious lash-envy. I have blonde lashes that im constantly needing to have tinited and lashing on the Diorshow. If you ever get tired of them shotgun a swap :chuckle::waving:

I can do it anywhere!! I've done it every place you can imagine - in a supermarket, in a chemist, in a department store, on the phone, on the internet, with boys, with girls....and I love watching too. I'll watch anyone do it, I'll watch in real life, I'll even watch on TV! I also love reading stories about people doing it. I buy mags to read the stories, honest. ;)

I always buy my skincare (except my IV) at the supermarket.

J&J Scrub thingy around $10
Garnier Green Moisturiser $15ish
Mask - $3.50ish
Eye Crema (Garnier) $15ish

And the IV is $30, so I am just over.

Yes but you have to add your makeup in there as well!! Argghh the horror!

Although having said that, my local supermarket does sell Covergirl and Rimmel, so I reckon you could look completely presentable (and even a little bit fab) if you bought EVERYTHING from the supermarket.

Makeup, what makeup? I almost never wear the stuff................... so I'm still all good! And if I did, I'd just buy mascara, and maybe an e/l pencil, from the discount store, or the supermarket, so I'm still OK.

Actually, I'd buy it all from the discount store, so I'd be really OK. Except for the IV, which no-one is going to deny me.

Wow... with me going back to uni I've had to really think about what my essentials are going to be - I just don't have the funds to suppliment a range of products not that even half of your list applies to me Medusa but it is interesting to see what girls think they couldn't go without...

For me I've pretty much budgetted for $50 worth of product once all my current Dr Hauschka (cleanser, toner, moisturiser) runs out, it is the most beautiful range but I don't think I can justify spending over $150 ... on a student income.

I'm the same to rosie...

I can't tell the last time I used makeup. Horrid to say on this forum but its the truth. I have like 1 Clinique eye liner - which I bought almost a year ago and I've only used a handful of times I've only sharpened it once!, a blush (TBS) and a GWP eye shadow from Clinique (lucky penny - its actually a lovely colour). I don't have mascara or lippy (I just use lip balm, i.e Dr Hauschka or TBS)... I have my Eye lashes tinted when I get my eyebrows shaped every month (this is my one indulgence I can't do without).

I've never been a makeup girl I try but anything I buy or I get with GWP ends up being given to my Mum.

Alice, you can do pretty well with supermarket/chemist brands. Even if you get a cheapish cleanser (Garnier and L'Oreal make nice milky ones if your skin is dry, and gel ones if you're a bit oilier - or there's good old Cetaphil) and then spend a little more on your moisturiser (although having said that, brands like Neutrogena and L'Oreal have good moisturisers). Sunscreen is pretty cheap and lasts quite a while, or you could find a moisturiser with an SPF built into it. Since you don't wear much makeup, you don't need to worry about remover, but I do insist on eye cream! The garnier one in the green tube is really lovely and is only around $18 (and lasts for about 2-3 months). You will really be fine if you take the time to investigate!!

Thanks for you help. I know plenty of people who do buy or budget for products so I should be able to do it too.
