Please give a big Adore Forum welcome to Kevin Murphy, hair guru and creator of KEVIN.MURPHY haircare products!
Kevin will be our special guest on the forum this week, so if you have any burning questions about your hair, ask away.
(Please be patient when waiting for Kevin's reply - he's in Norway at the moment so there is a bit of a time difference :) )
Film, television commercials, music videos, fashion magazines…top Australian hair stylist Kevin Murphy has done hair for them all and then some.
It is fair to say that Kevin Murphy knows a bit about the world of fashion and celebrities. He has styled some of the world’s most beautiful heads including Cate Blanchett, Selma Blair, Naomi Watts, Jewel, Claudia Karvan, Enrique Iglesias and is a regular for everyone’s favourite gal, Kylie Minogue.
In fact, Kylie saw the talent in Murphy years ago and requested him as her personal stylist. Together they have worked on the worldwide hit film Moulin Rouge, as well as Kylie’s music videos and two national tours.
Murphy has been a professional hair stylist for over two decades. After starting hairdressing in 1979, he furthered his training at Vidal Sassoon in London. He has been a freelance fashion hair stylist since 1984.
Working with top names has meant Murphy has also worked with the best photographers, styling for the likes of Patrick Demarchelier, Richard Bailey, Graham Shearer and Wayne Maser to name a few. Magazines he has worked with include Vogue, US Harpers Bazaar, Mademoiselle, Mde. Figaro, Vanity Fair, marie claire, British Elle, Spanish Vogue, GQ; the list is exhaustive.
Most recently he has worked with internationally renowned photographer Robert Erdmann to produce a stunning series of shots set within an Australian beach scene that capture some truly unique looks created by Murphy himself.
Murphy formed a business partnership with fellow stylist Michelle Kusco to create Kusco-Murphy International, a hugely successful Australian hair care company that created worldwide buzz.
Murphy branched out on his own in 2003 and produced a line of products known simply as kevin.murphy. With names such as Sticky.Business, Hair.Resort, Easy.Rider, Rough.Rider, Anti.Gravity, Fresh.Hair and Hair.Screen, Murphy has imbued his own cheeky sense of humour into his creations.
In 2005, Murphy launched his long-awaited range of shampoos, conditioners and treatments which he travelled to the far corners of the earth including India, Asia and the Pacific Islands on a passionate quest for the purest (non-blended) essential oils for his products. This international search was well worth it, with many overseas retailers including Harvey Nichols in London now selling his range of products.
After all this globetrotting, Murphy’s favourite city is still Melbourne – after all, it’s where he grew up. Which is why he was the major hair sponsor for a second time round at Motorola Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, September 2005.

Hi Kevin,
First of all I'm a big fan of your products and my fave is the Heavenly Moist Rinse which has become a bathroom staple.
My question is this, sometimes the shampoo's I use don't rinse out properly and despite numerous and prolonged rinsing I can still feel "suds" in my hair. Later on my hair is frizzy and looks lacklustre. Is this because of too much product build-up in my hair or is it a specific ingredient in shampoo? It happens a lot and there are only a couple I can use, namely Phytojoba by Phytologie. Should I be using a clarifying shampoo and if so which one do you recommend and how often should I be using it?
Also I have quite a long face and high forehead, what sort of hairstyles will suit me? Currently I have quite long slightly layered hair.
Thanks for listening.

Hi Kevin,
I have a thyroid disorder that has cruel effect on my body. My hair & skin are extremely dry and I live in the NT in Central Australia where's it's more dry than humid most times.
Do you have some advice as to how to care for my hair in this environment and from this disorder? My hair is prone to falling out. I do take medications but it seems to be a fact of life.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Kevin,
I can have an incredibly itchy scalp, my scalp can be flakey and sometimes red. I've tried numerous shampoo/conditioners. Currently using a naturally alternative: A'kin. I have dark coloured hair, I get my hair coloured every 3 months. I have fine hair but a lot of it! ... If I go a couple of days without washing it itcan get so greasy, dull and lacks any body.
What products would you rec?
Do you think I should stop colouring my hair as often?
Could my hair condition be related to my health... should I be considering a little more of a holistic approach?

Hi Kevin,
I have long, thick, wavy/curly hair. It is quite dry, and I colour it with a permanent colour. I also have psoriasis so need to use relatively gentle products.
What products would you recommend to:
a) make my hair soft and healthy,
b) define curls without crunch, and
c) enhance shine and reduce frizz.
Thanks.

Just wanted to say that I love your products that contain natural ingrediants & still give a fabulous result without all the unnecessary chemicals. Top marks! :worship: I too have a sensitive scalp & can only use products without Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Keep up the good work.

Hi Kevin,
I just want to ask a question about this hair on one side - always sticks out! It drives me crazy and does not look good with a hair-clip. My hair is naturally wavy and short-mid-length. How can I control this piece of hair - just cut it off even shorter?
thanks,

Dear Mermaid
if your face is oval your a lucky girl, you have the perfect face for a fringe. try a heavy firinge with some layers down the side and at the bottom. yuor best bet is to see someone with the hair that you like and go to the hairdresser that cut that style. As your hair is straight it will respond well just make sure the hairdresser doesnt make it too layered. Use a product that i make called ANTI.GRAVITY its an oli free volumiser that you apply to wet hair the product is invisible and has been specially formulated to give fine hair a boost without any visible sighns of product

Dear NARSissistic
I dont have any thing to do with the Kusco Murphy brand i left there about 3 years ago. The formulas have changed since i was there. My new brand has a product you will like called MAXI.WASH you apply it to damp har it has fruit acid from Pineapple, Paw Paw and Citrus so it like having a chemical peel on your hair and scalp. Just place it onto the hair do not scrub this will remove all your reseidue from the past and give you that really fresh clean feeling
Make sure you are using a conditioner that does not contain silicone that can make your hair frizzy try my BORN.AGAIN the combination of BORN.AGAIN and MAXI.WASH give amazing effects to the hair your hair will feel like hair again and it removes the silicone

Hi Kevin
I've been looking awhile for a good hair stylist in Sydney but yet to find one and won't know where to start from. You have mentioned you knew most of the stylist in Australia. Would appreciate if you could give me some recommendations. I have very fine thin hair and have been having the same shoulder length layered style for the past 6 years.
Thanks.

Hi Kevin,
I suffer from Female Pattern balding so have very very fine hair. I have my hair coloured with blonde foils over half my head and a darker blonde tint on the rest of my hair. I have been seeing a new hairdresser, but have noticed since changing that my hair seems to be breaking now. I was advised by a friend who is a hairdresser that there is a quick acting bleach as well as a slow acting bleach and that it is possible my hairdresser is using the quick acting bleach which is causing hair breakage. Could you please advise if this could be the case and when looking for a hairdresser to do my colour what questions I need to ask about the type of bleach they use?
Thanks so much for your time.
Cheers
Jen

Hope you can offer some advice. I recently asked my hairdresser to "update" my hairstyle. I am 47, the hairdresser is about 30!!! We cut and coloured, but the end result doesn't look much different from when we started . My hair is thick and curly and has a mind of it's own. It will part itself wherever it likes, and curls appear in all the wrong places. I am a swimming teacher and spent hours in the water every day, so there is no use styling with products. A good cut that encourages my natural curl but looks modern seems to be out of reach for most hairdressers in my small country town. Any suggestions?

Hi Kevin!!
Welcome!!
I have a dilema with snapping hair.
I was platinum blonde up untill about 8 months ago when i statred to experience quite significant snapping. My hair napped all around my crown and under neath at the back to the point where i could tie the short hair underneath in a very short pony tail and around the crown had created a new "layer" to my longer layered look.
i managed to stop it initially with some great protein treatments but still 8 moths down the trach my crown area seem to be still quite week. Nothing seems to cut it anymore :explode:
I stopped belaching my hair as soon as it snapped and have stuck to basic semi's at home since (close to my natural auburn/red hair colour). I still use treatments every week sometimes twice and leave ins but its still snapping. :(
Can u offer any general advice as well as solutions in your range??
I also get a realy itchy scalp sometimes around my crown. Could this be related to the leave in products i use in particularly in that area?
Much Love

Hi Kevin,
thanks for taking the time to read these! My dilemma is this... i have thick, curly hair and although i may wash it one day (and i put a moisturiser in it all the time as its v. dry and can go v. frizzy!!) and it looks great when i go to bed and wake the next day it looks awful! its gone all flat and segmented (stringy looking). It happens all the time! i dont mind on the weekends but during the week when im at work its a nuisance, so i usually just tie it up or straighten it. Is their a miracle product that will reinvigorate my hair the next day without having to wash it again or go crunchy & stiff?
Thanks so much!

Hi there, very generous of you to devote your time to answering our questions!
Like Ishtar, I have very long hair (a couple of inches shorter) and even though I am 39 on Friday, still look and consider myself quite youthful - it is very much my trademark! My concern is since my pregnancy (11 years ago) my hair texture has become much finer (is that possible?) and when I straighten it (infrequently) my ponytail (usually wear my hair up) ends up very tiny indeed. I am looking for a texuriser, not so much a volume booster as I quite like the sleek look, but to give my hair a bit of heaviness (akin to Jennifer Anniston's heavy looking hair). Pomades and other syling creams dont tend to work on my extra long hair and I end up looking greasy! My hair is all the one length and as I do not blow dry it, quite healthy. Many thanks!

Hi Kevin,
I have a round face and have had thick long straight hair pretty much all my life. I'm a bit sick of it now. How do I emulate the appearance of short hair without cutting my hair short (I still need leave my hair long enough so that they could all be tied back in a low ponytail)? I saw Hilary Swank in "The Black Dahlia" recently and in it, her character in some scenes, tucked her long hair underneath so they looked like a bob. How do I do this myself?
thanks so much Kevin! xx

07-02-2007, 04:44 AM
Dear Kashimi Blue
the quickest nd most effective way to make your hair look like a short bob when it is long is to attatch an elastiv band right down on the ends of the hair, make sure it is in the middle of,then roll the hair under until you get the desired length. Secure with a bobby pin or two, make usre you put the pin right throgh the elasic band this will make sure you have the support and it will really hold. If you hair is a bit floppy and tens to fall out make sure you apply a foundation product to the hair wet and dry it in the best one to use is my ANTI.GRAVITY

thankyou for your kind words, your hair has changed and now you have to change your attitude to long hair as we grow older (not that 39 is old these days) you have to take steps to keep your hair youthful. As you had had children your hormones have changed your body I suggest cutting it a little you can stiil have it long but maybe not quite as long as you have it, mainly because the hair has alot of weight and since you have kept it long the hair gets used to lying flat. I have a product that may help this will fatten up your hair it is called HAIR.SCREEN it has a dry finish and is an anti humectant (that means it repels moisture) so it has a dryer texture this will stop your hair from looking and going greasy. It is weightless and will add shine without oil. This product will fatten up yout hair. I alos reccomend a product called STAYING.ALIVE this has vitamins and when vitamins are placed onto the hair they can absorb itto the cortex on the hait thickening by as much as 10% this will not make your hair oily but you must use every day it will make tour condition better and improve the quality of your hair over time
good luck and regards kevin

Dear Molly
it seems you have not found the right product, as a person with curly hair myself I suffered throught the 80's with frizzy hair I have the perfect product for you called EASY.RIDER its a no crunch no crush curl enhancer the diffrence here is it has miosturising products that are not greast the product is water soluble and gets it moisture from green Tea Extracts and vitamins and minerals so it will also improve the quailty of your hair over time. yuo aply it to wet hair and scrunch or simply leave it to dry. it is best applie to wet hair as the product is water soluble the wetter the hair the more natural the look. I also advise you investin a silk pillow case this wll ensure that your hair does not get so messed up during the night

Dear Beauty Addict
sounds like you need to find a good hairdresser, try Rixons Hair in the city I think they are in Adelaide st they are really nice and have have a very caring colouring technician. Now your pillow might have something to do with it, you sound like you may have a littel psorisis on your crown and if your using a synthetic pillow its heating up the psorosis and making it itchy and you might be scratching it your sleep and this can effect the way the hair grows out. The products you put there may be imflaming it and causing it to brake. You can try a product that i make called STAYING.ALIVE its a vitamin spray that does not contain protien and a treatment conditioner called BORN.AGAIN the protein you have used can make the hair brittle and snap it off so dont use that any more. move to a more gentle shampoo called ANGEL.WASH its for fine fragile and broken hair.BORN.AGAIN contains anitoxidants and regenerating essential oils that will repair your hair and scalp. the ANGEL.WASH contains milk protiens that are very gentle and not harsh
the leave in conditioners you have may contain petro chemicals and that may irratate and cause extra heat in your body and damage your hair as well
Let me know how you go

Hi Kevin,
I was wondering if you could suggest some products for me.
I have long (about half way down my back) blonde hair. I get a cut & half a head of foils every 6-8 weeks. I also have a blunt fringe.
My hair is fairly fine but I have a lot of it. I have suffered from psoriasis on my scalp from many years & have yet to find something that controls it. I know it can't be cured.
Lately I've switched to more natural shampoos & conditioners (with no sodium laureth sulfate)...
Can you suggest some products I can use, along with any treatments?
Thanking you in advance.

Hi Kevin
I definitely would appreciate some help. I have very fine, coloured hair with the main problem being lack of elasticity. My hair simply looks dreadful each morning after sleeping on it so that I have to wash it every single day.
I'm trying out your Angel rinse as a conditioner which I like and the Anti-Gravity as my styling product. I then have to pile on the hairspray as I don't seem to get a huge amount of volume just using the Anti Gravity.
Also, my hair falls forward naturally and I have a 'widows peak' which doesn't aid the situation either. Hairdressers always use some excuse when they blow-dry my hair like 'well, you must know how difficult it is to dry hair like this!"
Perhaps I should invest in a wig!

I get confused about the order in which products should go on my hair.
I always use a leave-in conditioner on my frizzy ends, sometimes a serum too.
Then I apply a curl boosting product.
If I am going out I will often add mousse & hairspray.
I feel like this is too much & wonder if once I have coated the hair in conditioner/serum is anything else on top effective?
I have long, thick, layered, curly hair.

Hi Kevin,
I hate my hair! It used to be moderately thick but due to illness my hair fell out. When it grew back it was super fine (may have something to do with all the medication I have to take). I have grown it long (just falls below my shoulder blades) and have it coloured regularly (foiled with a few different colours to add texture). There isn't a lot I can do with my hair because it is so baby fine. Going short is not an option as I have a round face and frankly it just doesn't suit. Any recommendations as to what I can do to atleast make it look a bit fuller. I have considered hair extensions but was advised against it because of how fine my own hair is.
Thank you so much for your time

Hi Kevin,
I have long, fine brown hair and a very textbook heart-shaped face. I'm unsure about what kinds of styles suit this shape of face ie. fringes, length of layers, how much body/straightening products I should be putting into it. How do I balance my curved forehead and pointy chin?
Many thanks in advance,

Thanks Kevin, picked them both up from Adore today! Could you tell me the order to use them? Can I put on the hair screen on wet hair or is it vice versa? I have noticed that you can use the Staying Alive on wet or dry hair? Many thanks for your recommendation.

Hello everyone,
It is funny how we seem to have soooo many hair issues! My hair is baby fine too - and I dont have alot of it, sometimes you can see my scalp - and I also have psoriasis which I've had all my life (but bleaching seems to burn it off???). It is a naturally mousy blonde - but highlighted, ok, bleached with foils every two/ three months as it grows sooo slowly. My biggest issue is that I want it to look healthy. I've never been able to grow it and have tried almost everything that I've seen to volumise, thicken and repair my hair (currently I'm using the Sebastian Body Double range). It's not so much the texture as it's actually super soft, it's just that I cannot grow my hair as it breaks easily and has always seemed to get to one length and then stop growing. Mind you, because it is so fine, I rarely wear it down as it looks so limp.
I am thinking of just cutting it into a short blunt bob - at the moment it's just above my shoulders and I have a longish side fringe with layers around my face (every hairdresser seems to want to layer it - one even took to it once with the razor thing! ).
In any case, I'm guessing I should invest in the angel wash and conditioner - what about a treatment and a suggestion for a short style (oval face).
Thanking you in advance!

Hi Kevin I have had a lot of stress over the past few years as well as developing digestive problems which make it hard for me to have a decent diet and I am noticing a fair bit of white hair is there a way to reverse this such as stress reduction vitamins I'm not ready for white hair
Also why is the hairdressing industry so averse to long hair on any woman over thirty
Here's a photograph

Dear Ishitar
there is nothing you can do about white hair its part of life, the only thing you can do is colour it. Hairderssers have an adversion to long hair becasue there is nothing you can do with it (shape wise) exept of course wear it up. I dont believe that a woman needs to cut her hair off but faces change as we get older and you need to grow with that. You are not old but your hair would be dragging you down and a hairdresser cant offer you a solution when you keep it that long and if you are going grey that is in your genes, go and get some highlights and get you length cut to at least just past breast length it will still be long (you have to cut the chord) pardon the pun

Kevin I am very saddened by your reply.I most certainly will not be cutting my hair or having layers which I hate in fact I am in the process of growing my hair back to mid thigh length.
As for the white hair when I colour it it will be with Henna and other tried and true herbs not bleach
Those of us who love long hair do not grow it for "versatility" we grow it because welove the
intrinsic beauty of long hair itself

Everyone who hasn't received a reply yet, please be patient - Kevin is having a hard time finding a decent internet connection while on the road in Norway :)

Thanks Kevin, picked them both up from Adore today! Could you tell me the order to use them? Can I put on the hair screen on wet hair or is it vice versa? I have noticed that you can use the Staying Alive on wet or dry hair? Many thanks for your recommendation.
You dont quite have me convinced to chop it off though!
Dear Lusia
you should use the hair screen on damp hair and you can follow up with a tiny tot more once is had dried
good luck and regards Kevin

Thanks Kevin! Even after one use my hair feels fantastic! I used the Staying Alive first then the Hair Screen. Feels like I have more hair - fabulous! Many thanks, hope you are enjoying the forum!

DEar Light Girl
your problem is the hair spray it would be eventually weighing your hair down, try using the anti gravity half drying your hair and then using a bit more anti gravity anf finish drying your hair you can also appy a littel anti graviy once it is dry. yuo will find that the anni gravity will give you more volume the more you use

Dear Medusa
Hi you should allpy your curl booster before your serum and also when you go out make sure the serum is the last thing you apply. the product needs to be under the serum as it seals the hair and stops the products from holding onto your hair so just do the serum last and you will have sucess

Hi Kevin,
I hate my hair!

Dear Pinkcupcake
my adive for you would be to consult a hair doctor, they are called a trycloogist they can help your hair recover so that you grtsome thivkness back they will do an analysis on your hair and find uot what chemicals are making it weak they will advise what trwtment you have to use. The things they normally tell you to get is herbs ect like burdock root and horse chestnut. whic are in my product called Staying alive In the mean time you should use staying alive every day this is a vitamin tratment spray that does not contain any oil and will thicken up your hair you must use it daily dont worry it wont weigh your hair down and it wont go greasy

Hi Kevin,
I have long, fine brown hair and a very textbook heart-shaped face. I'm unsure about what kinds of styles suit this shape of face ie. fringes, length of layers, how much body/straightening products I should be putting into it. How do I balance my curved forehead and pointy chin?
Many thanks in advance,
Melita
Dear Melita
heart shaped faces are very much in Vogue at the moment so your lucky. these faces suit a more coquetish look if you have natural curl you would do best at embracing it. I would not have your hair too long Id go for a long bob or something that had more fullness at the bottom and flatter hair on top. You dont have to go short but just past the shoulders go for more width and no height and have a side fringe that goes wiith your cowlick
The product thing I cant tell you until i can see you but a good hairdreser should be able to help you here

Thanks.
