MAC have just named Raquel Welch as their fourth beauty icon following in the footsteps of Liza Minelli, Diana Ross and Catherine Deneuve. She will headline the new ‘Raquel Welch Beauty Icon Collection' launching this year.

Check out the range here:

MAC looks to be following an industry trend to use more mature role models following a backlash against unattainable images of beauty. Early last year LOREAL signed up Jane Fonda and Diane Keaton.

I just think its an interesting marketing move. They obviously think that older women are not buying MAC becuase it has a certain image and that by using Raquel Welch as a face for MAC that they can entice older buyers.

She looks pretty darn great....though would it be too bitchy to mention the word 'airbrushing'??

I would have thought MAC appealed to a pretty broad user group...I do love that they're marketing to all different ages and faces. I think that's part of their philosophy. And that their products kick butt!

Am I the only one who thinks she looks a little bit like a drag queen :ashamed:

Still, drag queens DO buy makeup so maybe it was intentional

Lol!!! I see what you mean Kate... but I feel really bad saying that about Raquel Welsh, because she is such a stunning woman :redcheeks:.

Hell No! It was the first thing I thought of. I mean she looks gorgeous & at her age I'm sure we would all love a pic of ourselves looking like that, but if Mac is trying to jump on that "keep it real" bandwagon then they have gone about it the wrong way.
Who thinks that look is attainable?

Didnt they once use Ru Paul as their "model" - big drag queen!

Despite their intentions on using real and older woman, she obviously looks like she has had a bit of "work" done! That said, I want her hair!!

I think if you can look past the cheeck implants, countless face lifts, botox and nose jobs and see the make up its self I think it is a reat photgrahic makeup look. Would i be able to pull this off in the clubs on the week end???.. :shake: i think not.
But your right, on a pure marketing basis, MAC is a younger focused brand lets face it!! I can see how they are trying to broaden their market and tap into the baby boomers etc.
But honestly what 50 or 60yr old is going to approach a MAC counter with their loud club beats and the 20 something make up artist with priscilla-esque make up and rockerbilly hair doo's to update their colours??  :o
No offence to Racquel (who look freakin fantastic my i add) but if i was in that age group and had money to blow I would want look like Chanels Nicole Kidman before i would want to look like a woman my own age whos a bit past her time!! can i get an AMEN?! :p :chuckle:

Yes, know what you mean, been using the backspace button a fair bit tonight!

Even I feel a bit "past it" when I visit a Mac store. Dont mind the music but some of the SA scare me, especially the boys! Needless to say I have never had a makeup done by them. Has anyone?

I have had my make up done a few times there before a night on the dance floor and they did a great job. I have various MAC pieces in my VAST collection and love them to death. And lots of pieces are ultra conservative neutral natural chic.!!
But i dont think they are approaching the older market thing very well.

NOW I understand!!!! I was thinking - do you see what I see??? Hehehe. Raquel does look good but I agree with all before me - way too touched up to appeal to someone like my mum!

i have to say i think she looks fab but yea you have to take her look with a grain of salt though i suppose e.g plastic surgery, fab skin care, airbrushing etc...as with all models i guess.

I do tend to prefer the natural look, i cant imagine sitting in a meeting @ work with a face like that lol but it would look hot right place right time.

i use MAC for everything i love it! my mum is in her 50's and loves their lip sticks. i do understand some ppl saying that going into the stores can be a little confronting for older women with the SA's and the loud music but i was only in there the other day with my mum and she loves it, especially the chapel st store. they were very helpful to her. i think she also likes them because they let off that sly comment is that your sister (refering to me....LOL:chuckle: )

Lauren I totally agree with you...I think it's more about how young you feel, not how old you are - that's why MAC appeals to all ages. It's fun (and make-up should be)! But over and above everything, it's the quality of their products that makes them so popular.

Hmmm...I'm turning into a bit of a MAC fanatic here! :saber: Sorry y'all!

Geeze!! They should have just used one of their sales men from Melbourne. They use enough makeup for three women! I remember taking my Mum and her Sister in there once and they nearly died! !!

Don't get me wrong I am a huge M.A.C fan but I think some of their make-up is to say the least a bit drag queen inspired. All in all it is a fabulous range of high quality cosmetics but with this latest advertising feature I wonder what market they are really aiming for. I can't say that my Mum would be inspired to shop there based on the Raquel Welsh add! Who they going to get next - Joan Collins :p :chuckle:!!

The Dove people must have been getting advice from MAC, seems as though their next focus will be on "older women". Famous photographer Annie Leibovitz is capturing some of these women for the new Dove campaign.

Looks like MAC has been looking to another Icon for inspiration, maybe should have put this in the "Odd Spot" thread?!

I know. I think the Bratz dolls are the oddest things I have ever seen. They looked practically deformed with their oversized heads:chuckle:
