I've been seeing and hearing a lot about make-up remover not just cleansers but actual specific make-up remover. I know about the stuff for eyes and lips which i always use, but what about the rest of my face.

I want to know the following :

1.Should i use a specific make-up remover before my cleanser?, If yes, please suggest some brands.

I am confused about this, because everyone seems to be making make-up removers. Help!

This is a good point. I recently bought the Benefit Not On My Pillow Make Up Remover, thinking it was eye make up remover. Oooops. I wipe it on with a cotton pad then rinse my face with water after, then I tone and moisturise as usual. I use it at night - usually after having a make-up free day or when I'm too lazy to use a proper cleanser! So I too would like to know if this is the correct use??!

Consider this: cleanser and makeup remover in 1 Dr Hauschka's Cleansing Milk perfect to use at night after a busy day. So easy to use, gentle too, adore stocks it as well.

Yes a lot of companies are making "make-up" removers but they are designed to dissolve make-up before cleansing, so infact this adds another step to your routine. Although I am keen to try Dermalogica's pre-cleanse (just curious!), as I only wear tinted moist and use a proper cleanser, might just be overkill. Still they have a place, but I would only use if you have concerns about your cleanser not doing a proper job - then again, think about changing cleansers!

I'm definitely no expert on skincare but I do know that simple tends to be best! I've found that foaming cleansers do a pretty good job of removing make-up and getting skin generally squeaky-clean. There are lots of great products out there....I'm with Luisa on not adding another step to your routine if you can get your hands on the right cleanser :)

I've always found that cleansing twice (with a cleanser) works really well, but I did have a Clinique product at one point, sorry can't remember what it was called, it came in a plastic pump style container and it was great for removing make up, I used to use it when I needed to re-apply my make up i.e. going out on a week night after work, as I have oily skin I always need to reapply for the evening if I want it to look good. The Clinique one works well to take make up off, even waterproof mascara.

Sounds like a good product for that purpose but I really question the need to cleanse twice. Can we have Allison's opinion on this, particularly for our oilier skinned members?

Hi Luisa - yes it was a good product. I cleanse twice only when I''ve been wearing makeup - once to remove the makeup and once to cleanse - I've not always done this - I was told I should do this by the beautician at the elle bache salon in adelaide a couple of months ago and I've got say I have noticed a difference in my skin.

When I'm wearing "full" makeup - foundation, powder, blush etc I use my Simple Cleansing Cream ($8 from Priceline) with cotton balls (can use it on the eyes but I find creams make my eyes red so I don't use it on my eyes) to loosen and take most of the makeup off. I then wash off any remaining makeup with Neutrogena Fresh Cleansing Foam (in the blue bottle) which takes off all the eyemakeup as well. Lovely fresh skin. When I haven't worn any foundation etc for the day I only use the cleansing foam and skip the cream. I have fairly "normal" skin and I find this routine doesn't dry my skin out at all or make it oily. Follow with toner/AHA/moisturiser/antioxidant serum. Doesn't take more than 10 minutes. Hope this makes sense.

Aahhh! Relief! Good to know that you are all concerned enough to remove your make-up properly and only cleanse twice when you are wearing a full face. Would still like to hear Allison's thoughts on this and any potential aggrevation to the oilier skins!

Hey Gals,

If you have the correct cleanser for your skin it should do both. The first cleanse is to remove make up and your second cleanse is to treat the skin (so active ingrediets can be absorbed).

A good cleanser will both remove make up and treat the skin.

Some people find that a gel will give that fresh feeling and a little lather too to make it easier, but a milk cleanser should also do the trick too when thoroughly rinsed.

Clarins do four different one step cleansers for nights where you want super quick easy removal, however I do prefer the idea of a treatment cleanser specifically for your skin type for day to day use.

I too have only been recently cleansing twice, once to remove my face  & again to actually "cleanse"... I only do one step when I'm not wearing any makeup

I've noticed a big difference in my skin too & after reading Alison's great advice, can relax in knowing that I'm doing the right thing & not over-cleansing :glee:

The Clinique product you were talking about is called Quick-Dissolve Makeup Solvent. It's a fantastic product. It removes makeup pronto. I always have a bottle on hand as it is super effective. Clinique have also launched a newer one called Take The Day Off Balm. It is a waxy balm type consistency and is gentle enough to be used on eyes also. It can simply be tissued off after use.

I really can't say enough about makeup removers. I simply couldn't live without them. I think that in order to cleanse properly you need to get rid of all existing makeup first. It enables your cleanser to do it's job properly whereas using a cleanser to take off your makeup makes the cleanser work harder and often your skin wont be cleansed properly because your makeup will still be sitting in random places. This is evident when you tone as makeup will still be coming off onto your cotton pad.

Yes I hate that, when the toner shows foundation colour. I feel like I have to wash my face all over again. I also hate it when you remove your eye make up only to wake up in the morning with more black smeared under your eyes. :flames:

Has anyone found a brand of cleansing wipes that are actually effective? All the ones I have tried don't really do anything. I just use them sometimes as a quick cleanse after excercise or something.

The Olay ones are by far the best I have used but they really sting my eyes. J&J 3in1 face wipes and the Nivea ones are other effective ones I have used and even remove eye makeup really well.

The cleansing wipes I find are the best for me...
L'Oreal pure zone daily deep cleansing foaming cloths - these have to be made wet first with water and I use like this and then rinse again for a final cleanse, it has sebo calmyl + salicylic acid- makes skin feel really feel clean.

I am also fond of the Garnier green clean & fresh wipes for normal & combination skin!:) :sunnies: :encore:

I find the Priceline vitamin e and cucumber ones are quite good (at $3.99 i'm not complaining anyway) However I must admit that I can never just use the wipes alone to cleanse. I still feel dirty if I just use them alone. What I do is take off what I can with the wipes and then cleanse afterwards. That being said I still much prefer my makeup solvents!

I just love using an Australian brand called 'Juice'. I've got combination skin and their oil based cleanser is just so easy to use and so good.

Eve Lom is another goodie, but you can't get it in Australia.

Just gently massage the Juice cleanser onto the face with your hands and some warm water and rinse off. Takes off all make up, doesn't clog pores, or pull skin and my skin's been great since I started using it six months ago.:encore:

Every night before I cleanse I massage Jurlique Cleansing Lotion into my skin which is specifically made to remove makeup/sunscreen. I also swear by Loreal Eye Makeup remover for sensitive eyes and lips or something, either way, it's the one with the two blue fluids that separate. I dab some onto a swissper and hold it onto the eye for about 10 seconds or so before very gently wiping it away. It leaves no traces of makeup and is so gentle on the eyelids.

That's fabulous that you have found a routine that suits!

Does the packaging of the foaming cleanser state that it will remove makeup? If so, that's great as the milky cleansers are usually designed for the evening to dissolve makeup and sunscreen. Sure you know that!

Yeah the milky cleanser does say it removes makeup but i find it doesnt do a good enough job unless i cleanse 2-3 times. Unless I'm doing something wrong?! (its the UC milk cleanser by the way).

The foaming one is the Neutrogena foaming cleanser - i ran out of cleanser while in Qld and needed something quick so i bought this and its really fabulous! It has Salicylic Acid in it and removes all traces of makeup really well.

Same, I got obsessed with this when I first found it because I couldn't believe it could really remove all your eye makeup (and it's under ten bucks to boot). It's a lovely consistency and very easy to use (when I can be bothered). My favourite cleanser for getting rid of all makeup is Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser, the one in the blue bottle! I cleanse twice and gently rub it along my lashline (doesn't sting, I promise) and it gets rid of every trace of mascara. When I first found this cleanser I text messaged every girlfriend I have and told her about it because I just couldn't get past it! It's just a great cleanser too, and not a week goes by when someone doesn't tell me I have great skin, so it must work! You heard it here folks, Neutrogena is da bomb.

Finding a great makeup remover is such a hard time. When I went overseas I used some cleansing wipes and they worked but i felt like i really had to rub my eyes which I wasnt too happy about. I dont remember the brand names but I tried more than one.

What I find works best is a little bit of olive oil or Vaseline onto the face and eyes then gently wiped off with a wet tissue or makeup pad. Then i cleanse the face with a cleanser. Right now Im trying Ultraceauticals and before that was Olay cleanser.

Hi Melita,

I use the Jurlique makeup remover too and love it. I do feel like I keep wiping my lashes and more and more mascara comes off, so I might try the L'Oreal remover for my eyes.

Some of the wipes hurt my eyes, but not the Neutrogena ones in the blue pack. (How much do we love Neutrogena blue range!?) If I use wipes though, I still feel like I have product left on my skin.

When I use the Jurlique lotion, I wipe it off with a wet cloth so there is *nothing* left on my skin...;)

Have just become a Skin Therapist myself and as far as I've learned, & in my experience, there are 2 options when it comes to removing makeup.

1. Double cleanse at night so that the first cleanse removes the makeup and the second cleanses your skin without it. (Sometimes a triple cleanse is necessary if you are a heavy makeup kinda woman).

OR

2. Use Dermalogica's Pre Cleanse (oil) for the first cleanse to remove makeup and then proceed with your usual cleanser. The idea behind this product is that because it's an oil it will attract to the oil so commonly present on the skin and in makeup. I'm sure there may be other products out there serving this purpose, but to date I haven't read or heard about any.

I used up my L'oreal eye make up remover which was good. I now have the Garnier one which i find isn't as effective...

In regards to a facial make up remover, i tried Jurlique's one, and while i was in love with the smell of it, it wasn't THAT impressive.

Now i usually use Clinique's Anti Blemish Solutions foaming cleanser, because it says to use it before 3 step, so i treat it as a makeup remover :redcheeks: it works well though!!

Yep.

The Garnier one is ok. But it leaves a pretty oily residue, and despite the claims of removing everything without rubbing, thats bogus. I had to keep wiping my eyes over and over to dissolve my mascara.

A good sunscreen is a must - and makes a huge difference to your skin.

I never, ever wear hats in summer as they give me shocking migraines, and I have been using 30+ sunscreen for years. I have almost nil sun damage (yes, I went under one of those lamp thingies to gain this info), and (if I do say so myself) my skin is in amazing condition.

So anyone who doesn't have a good SPF30+ get one now! And use it year round, just because the sun isn't burning you doesn't mean the UV has dropped.

Just saw you review at the base of the listing Trash!

I cannot use anything with any oil content near my eyes unfortunately...:tears:

Oh really? I know you like that Nivea one LB. I thought that had oil in it as well? Obviously not though?

No, it is completely oil free. So gentle, I could literally pour it into my eyes!

Well thanks for the tip LB. When I can't afford my HG one I'll buy this cheapie! ;)

Although it removes my Jemma Kidd liner (and that stuff doesnt budge), it wont remove waterproof eyemakeup. I saturate the cotton pad really well and just hold it over my eye and it seems to just wipe off.

Hehe, well thanks for the warning.
I guess I'll just blame my oily skin for not being handle sunscreen. :P

I know the others have poked at you gently for not wearing sunscreen (nazis yes!) but amerliorate I am so oily myself and I find IZ excellent. Zinc is actually good for oil. If you try it you may need to prepare yourself for the thicker texture but once it is on add a little powder and it looks fine. The BECCA one is also all-zinc and a good option for you. I used to use Clinique Super City Block which is not zinc-based but another option for oily types. You really need to use a sunscreen - preferably with a large physical blocker base (zinc or titanium in the ingredient listing as actives). Not only will your skin look a zillion times better when you get older but there is another more important factor - skin cancer. In Aus the sun is so much stronger than elsewhere in the world and we really need to be aware of the damage it can cause.

Hey BC, I use Nivea Extra Gentle eye make up remover and it is fantastic. Bought on Luisa's recommendation.

No stinging or burning. Super-cheap too, which is a plus.

I purchased the Neutrogena eye make-up remover, because i'm having a thing at the moment where i want all my products to match.

I went to buy one of the Loreal make-up removers but my sister had one she didn't want so i just got that. But i think i'll go for the Garnier 2 in 1 remover next time.

Emmy I was curious so I picked this up at the supermarket yesterday. There are two, one with an oil phase and one without. I got the one without oil. I have not used it yet but it is packaged in a seriouisly stupid pump pack. Not a great idea for liquids like water! It smells chemically but when I popped a few drops on the back of my hand, the smell wasnt there. I would use this like I use my CD and Clarins ones - as a toner. I am not convinced that this or they have the cleaning power for foundation or sunscreen.

Will let you know when I have used it.:waving:

Has anyone tried the new Garnier 2 in 1 waterproof make-up remover???

I need a new make-up remover and i'm tossing up between the Garnier one and the Loreal ones. I thinmk it will depend on the price at the time.

Do you mean the one that is in a 200ml bottle, it's two-tone and it says it's for face and eyes?

If you do, I tried it and am pretty sure that was the cause of the reaction I had around my eyes. It was all flaky and dry :(

yep thats the one i mean, its made for sensitive skin so thats very unfortunate that you had a reaction.

What do you normally use to remove make-up if you skin is that sensitive??

I suggest you give the Natural Instincts Mineral Sunscreen a go. It's SPF30+ and is the best sunscreen I've ever used. Retails for around $9 for a 100ml bottle. Perfect for face and body use.

Normally my skin is not that sensitive. I can use pretty much anything.
Oil Cleansers that work for me:
M.A.C Cleanse Off Oil
Ginvera Olive Oil

Two Tone Eye Make-Up Removers that work for me:
Lancome Bi Facil
Neutrogena Oil Free Make-Up Remover

Natural Instinct Baby Massage Oil is also good for removing eye make-up
