As part of my ongoing efforts to try every self-tanning body lotion known to man, I purchased Palmer's Cocoa Butter Natural Bronze Body Lotion while on holidays.

For the grand price of $8.95, you get an easily-absorbed but quite moisturising lotion that smells like chocolate and gives you a really nice, even, bronze tan over a few days. The boy reckons he can still smell the fake tan smell after a few hours, but eh, I couldn't smell it and I can't be bothered trying to please his nose any more :chuckle:

Two thumbs up from the Fake Tan Queen! Best tanning body lotion I've tried so far :sunnies:

oh intresting, palmers always have great stuff! I saw that one while browsing up town on the weekend and was tempted to try it but thought i better stivk it out with my Dove summer glow.

I find the Dove isnt very moisturising though but the colour is quite nice, i do find i always have to get the darker skin formula to notice anything at all and im quite pale.

Definitely get the Palmers, it's way better than Dove IMO. I found the Dove very thick but not especially moisturising and the colour was a bit yellow after a while.

not sure if you have mentioned this one before previously but the Garnier Body Summer is fab! You can make it work really quickly if you use heaps and it doesn't make it look more yellow. It doesn't smell much either! In a few days it really shows.

Mmm I did try the Body Summer but the boy could not tolerate the smell of that one at ALL - 5 minutes after I put it on he was like "oh my god, what are you wearing, you stink!" (Nice.)

Lol Kate, sounds like your BOY has a very sensitive nose!! Oh well I guess it's better to have a guy that notices smells etc than to have one who doesn't comment at all!

I have just used the Palmers one tonight. Have been using it for the past two days and the colour is very natural and its super moisturising

An update on the palmers - 3 days into it and I am streak free, bronzed and soft!! My boy told me i "smell like chocolate brownies" which I am guessing is a good thing.

Kate, just had to tell you that after not trying a self tanner pretty much since they first came out, I took your advice and bought the Palmers Natural Bronzing.

Can I say, it is just fabulous. It smells great when it goes on, didnt get a whiff of fake tan smell for some time afterwards (did pick it though, sensitive nose!). Despite putting it on only a short time before bed, I didnt get any streaks and it produced a very noticeable colour by morning. Dark enough so that I dont have to reapply perhaps for a couple of days. I am thrilled!:kissing:

Kate I think you mentioned in another thread that you had the Napoleon Whipped Dream Tan Enhancer...would love a full review if you have a few secs! Thanks

Sure, here goes...

It's creamy like a body butter, and a rich bronze colour with shimmer (but not glittery). Smells nice - sort of vanilla-ish.You don't need to use very much, just smooth it over the skin like you would a body lotion. I find I have to be careful not to rub it in too much as then it clumps together - you have to smooth it over, not rub it in. The colour is sheer but not overly dark, I'm very pale naturally and this gives me a bit of colour but without looking too weird. When you wash it off at the end of the day, it does leave behind a bit of fake-tan colour - not as much as, say, Fake Bake... about half-strength of a normal fake tan.

The bronze colour does come off on clothes a little bit, I really only notice it on white things. It washes out easily enough but I probably wouldn't use it if I were going to wear any light coloured dry-clean-only clothing. I mostly use it on my legs, I find it's great for those times when you put on a skirt and then look down and realise your legs are still a bit too glow-in-the-dark for public consumption :chuckle:

Hope this helps!

I'm sold - going to try the Palmers one now!!

Have been trying the Dove Summer Glow and although I don't mind the smell etc I'm still white! Nothing is happening.. at least the Johnsons Holiday Skin turned me a pale yellowy colour!

Also love the Whipped Dream Tan Enhancer - think it smells divine. I asked for samples at the counter and was given a couple and they had enough in them to do either both legs or both arms. Have yet to buy the tub to take home - the samples were good for the silly season parties though!

OK I think my skin has had enough fake tan for the season & is ready for rehab, but I'm not done yet!! Its still sunny & warm enough to wear shorts so I need something to stop me glowing in the daylight.
I have a few areas where the tan appears to have stained my skin, like the insides of my thighs. If I look at my shins I can see all the pores of my skin are dark brown. I do a full body exfoliation twice a week & apply tan every other day. After scrubbing all the tan off my legs look spotty from the tan stuck in my pores.
What to do?

Kate (Staff)

Medusa - try a good strong AHA-based body lotion. I find that manual exfoliation just doesn't cut it after a while, so every month or two I use an AHA lotion twice a day for a few days as my fake tan rehab program :)
Personal fave is the Ultraceuticals body cream; other good ones are Alpha-H Body Zone or MD Formulations Hand & Body Creme.

Would the Palmers product work for a guy, I'm naturally very pale, and i tried Johnsons Holiday Lotion when it first came out, it worked fine on my arms, but in other peoples opinions my arms looked orange, i thought they looked brown. I applied it twice a day, so maybe i overused it? Anyway, maybe a guy here had tried the Palmers, if so, please tell me how it went.

Thanks.

Hi Chris

I say give it a go! My brother is just as pale as me and occasionaly uses some of my tanners - you just need to find the right one for you (as you can see from all our posts we all have success with different ones - different skin tones/type/colour etc etc)

Good Luck! :hearts:

Chris, definitely give it a go. I recommended it to a guy that I work with. Then he tells me that when he sweats during a workout, the colour started getting patchy on the insides of his wrists! Please apply where you would naturally tan. Use what is left on your hands to blend it around your forearms but never fully apply to the inside of your arms which dont naturally tan as much as the outside! I have olive skin and only needed it once or twice a week. Twice a day may have been a bit much! Remember to wash your hands and under your nails too.

So the Palmers product is the best way to go? I assume it is because of all the great feedback on here about it. Is it a moisturiser and tanner or just a tanner?

Luisa Brown
04-03-2007, 11:36 PM
Chris, it's a cocoa butter body moisturiser with some self-tan in it. Out of all that have been tried by our forum users, this seems to be popular because of it's no self-tan smell and the colour result. Give it a go but remember about application and washing your hands. Allow it to dry for a little while before you dress too.

Just noticed the new St Tropez self-tanning moisturiser on the Adore home page...am keen to try it! St Tropez is the only fake tan brand that I have had non-streaky results with.

I don't mind so much being pale but pale with lots of freckles looks a bit silly I think.

Ahhh, I knew the generic "tanning body lotions" thread must be around somewhere!! Well I have got back into self-tanning moisturisers with a vengaence, and now my bedroom and bathroom are littered with what seems like hundreds of bottles in all shades of pale yellow and beige! It's funny how, as soon as you start getting back into regular self-tanning, you become semi-obsessed with being bronzey and glowing!!

I'm only on day three of using Holiday Skin and Dove (the one for darker skin - someone else mentioned that even though they were pale they needed the darker formulation to see results, and I'm the same) and while my legs are going well, the arms and face are pretty much the same. D'oh!! But will keep going with it. Am switching to Nivea tonight.

I think that was me. I'm pale as a ghost but had to use the darker one to see a difference. I reckon Dove is one of the better picks, not as stinky as some of the others too.

I just don't get these gradual tanners. In theory by the time (or not enough time) it takes to build up the tan it is time to exfoliate again. I always use a straight up fake tan & still have to build the coverage over a couple of days. I did try the Johnsons one & didn't like it. even after using it everyday for a week I still wasn't tanned????

I don't like the gradual tanners as I find them less controlable due to build up.

Yeah I hear you on the exfoliation thing, I'm trying to figure out the ratio of exfoliation to product application!

I dunno M, I just cannot use full-on self-tanners. I always end up looking dirty, and it's usually a bit stressful for me because I'm always worried about streaking and messing it up big-time! With the gradual tanners, at least I can't mess it up too much. I think if my skin was any darker I wouldn't bother and I would head straight for the proper self-tan, but because my legs in particular are so very white I'm just not comfortable doing the proper self-tan thing. I don't have enough skill in the area and I can never get the blending right (especially on my arms!!). But yeah, the exfoliation thing has me puzzled, especially since I generally use a combo of AHA lotion and physical exfoliation!

But on the other hand, I have been diligently moisturising my entire body post-shower for abuot the past week in pre-tan prep, and my skin is SO smooth!! WOO!

It is a bit hard, isn't it?? Sometimes I really feel like I have "lotion fatigue" - I get out of the shower and then have to apply a myriad of lotions and creams all over my face and body (and hair for that matter). As if my face doesn't present me with enough challenges, then I have to worry about having an even, streak free tan all over my body! It's so much to think about!

Remember back in the day when having a shower was a simple prospect?? Now the in-shower and post-shower routines require way more mental logistics than they should!

Sounds fun, but I don't get Foxtel :(

For anyone who wants a straight up fake tan that gives a natural light golden colour then I highly recommend the Palmer's Cocoa Butter Bronze. It is really moisturing as well & smells yum. It has a colour guide but it is more a caramel colour than vegimite. Pretty hard to stuff this one up, You won't be disappointed.

It has got so many raves and I would LOVE to try it, but I cannot stomach the smell of Palmers!! It makes me want to vomit, as does nearly every chocolate/caramel/vanilla scented body product I have ever used!!

I think it must also contain a similar ingredient to TBS body butter, because apart from the chocolatey smell of Palmers, there is something in it that turns absolutely rancid on my skin, and TBS does the same. It's horrid!

I used the Palmers gradual tanning lotion on the weekend and well a streaky mess but i think i've only got myself to blame. So i think i will need to be more careful next time or maybe i'll just go for the Modelco airbrush in a can so i don't have to rub it in. My other problem was it is so NOT gradual at all. I though it would take at least 2 days or more to show through but the next morning i was glowing a lovely bronze colour, now i think the reason it worked so quickly is because i am so pale that i'm almost translucent.

I need some reviews for the Modelco Airbrush in a can and also the translucent mist one aswell.

I'm gonne get this whole tanning thing right even if i have to buy every product out there because although i am streaky i'm liking being brown for a change and it makes me feel thinner and sexier, so i'm going to give it all i've got coz i've caught the tanning BUG!!!!

Hahaha I am so with you! It is a bug hey?!! Once you start tanning you notice all the tanned bronzed girls on tv and in mags, and on the street! How exactly was yuor application streaky? Was it definitely streaky, or more patchy? I find that streaks can come from not using enuogh product and trying to smooth over an inadequate amount. Yeah some of those tannerisers are noticeable on me after one night too, especially on my legs. On that note too, I always have to put them on a few hours before I go to bed because things take AGES to sink into my skin and then it rubs off on my sheets. :(

But today I graduated to real, grown-up, actual fake tan and it was gloriously easy!!

I'm over it too (over the constant worrying about whether I'll need to tan tonight/tomorrow morning/"will it have enough time to dry?" "can I tan and not worry about stinking?" and patchiness etc) but at the same time when I went without tan a couple of weeks ago I felt horrid - really unattractive and unsexy. I do agree that a tan makes your arms and legs look thinner, which is definitely a plus because you don't have that fat, pale, pudgy thing happening. But the big plus for me is that it evens my skin out and acts sort of like makeup in a way. The skin on my arms is quite yucky, I have a lot of pink undertones and I also have KP, plus your usual freckles, little scars, marks etc. Fake tan makes all this almost not noticeable. That's why i keep doing it!

I think if you have perfect porcelain skin all over, then by all means stay white, but fake tan is great for making your skin look a lot better than it actually is!

My body tan is starting to work out well but my face is still white as a ghost and it looks really odd and not mention dumb. I've tried the Nivea Summer Glow for your face but its too weak and it makes my skin very oily and besides i just wash it off with my AHA cleanser and toner anyway. It feels so pointless, applying tanner that night and washing it off in the morning anyway and its too oily for daytime.

So how do i successfully fake tan my face without screwing up the balance of my skin and upsetting my routine???

I'm getting darker as I age too Loola. I always had porcelain "china doll" skin and people would comment on it - nowadays my skin is still good but it's not as fair, it's more on the lighter side of medium. Boring!! I like skin to be very tanned and olive or very fair - in between just doesn't work for me!!

I keep meaning to get a spray tan - I was going to do it last week but time got away from me. I don't have any real reason to do it so it seems like it would be a bit wasted! I don't even have any particularly great Christmas parties coming up!

Yeah my life is sad.:chuckle::shakehead:

You have to give up on the AHAs and toners if you want to tan your face. I know it sounds counterintuitive but my skin has actually been better since I have been tanning my face, and I think it's because I've been treating it super-gently. It's also been LESS OILY, and I think that's because it's not overcompensating due to foaming cleansers etc. I didn't think I was drying it out before, and I've always been very careful of that, but maybe I was. When you're tanning you have to be really careful of whatever you put on your face, because if you apply the wrong product and it happens to contain a large amount of actives, you could end up with major blotchiness the next day (yeah this has happened to me and my tan).

PP the facial tanners I use are Ultraceuticals Self-Tan and Garnier Ambre Solaire Perfect Bronzer. The Ultraceuticals sinks in very quickly and even though it does contain mineral oil (as does the Garnier) it doesn't feel like it's sitting on my skin. I use it about 2-3 times a week. The Garnier takes a bit longer to sink in and the colour is slightly more golden. I use it about every second night, or 2-3 times a week if I occasionally use a gradual face-tanner (one with SPF like Dove's) during the day. L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Gel is my favourite tanner for the body and it's also fine for use on the face at night. It does feel a bit greasy but it leaves a great tan.

Phew! I feel sorry for people who are just getting started on tans because it's so much to remember.

I am not at the olie part yet - I am hoping so, my mum and 2 elder brothers are olive wogs!

People used to think I was darker than I was because o my features, they would always give me a foundation far too dark, and be surprised that I actually was the lightest or second lightest.

So i'm gonna exfoliate and use moisturiser with a gloss in it to add a bit of shimmer and hopefully make my skin look smooth and creamy and natural.

Is this product like a gradual tan thing or is it like an instant tanner? Would it work for guys?

It's a gradual tanner but you do go a bit darker after one night's application. You might have to rub it in carefully and thoroughly if you have hairy arms and legs. :) But of course it would work for guys!!!

They don't make a product for the face though, so you might want to try out Johnsons Holiday Skin for the face and use it as your nighttime moisturiser (after cleansing!!).

I think with a lot of these tannerisers, it's a matter of trial and error, because it seems that everyone's skin reacts differently to different brands. I actually got a good colour from the Johnsons Holiday skin & so did my brother. The Dove one also produced a nice bronzey colour, but was too thick & you have to be extra careful to rub it in properly, otherwise it can end up streaking. Nivea is another brand I've had good results with, even though the consistency is pretty runny. But for me, I found that it was easier to rub in properly. I have also tried a sample of Kit's Tan Building Body Lotion & today am trying out a sample of Mecca's new self tanner, so should hopefully see some results in a few hours (hopefully a good one!).

Luckily most of these tanning moisturisers are not too expensive, so you can try different brands fairly easily. With Kit & Mecca, I'm doing the sample thing first seeing as they are a bit more expensive.

Worst case scenario you can always use the solution I accidently found to bad fake tan mishaps. I had an awesome fake tan and then hopped in the bath for what I thought was going to be 30 minutes. Well I ended up on the phone for 2 hours (I NEVER do that) to my little sister and drank 3 glasses of wine (and I rarely drink!) and when I came out all of the fake tan was off my body and around the edge of the tub!
