I noticed a lot of us seem to being going way off the ' what fragrance are you wearing today' thread discussing our different fragrances etc so thought I would create a thread where we can natter about fragrances. What do you like, what don't you like, what's new etc?

Just about everyone I know got a fragrance for Christmas. Did you get one? Did you give one? What is going to be the next fragrance you purchase?
I am totally addictes to and obsessed with Jo Malone products. I think I am gong to end up with the entire collection! Next on my wish list is Jo Malone Wild Fig & Cassis and Pomegranate Noir!
I have also got from Jo Malone:
French Lime Blossom
Nectarine Blossom & Honey
Red Roses
Honeysuckle & Jasmine
I also got the matching lotions and bath oils to match them all!
Anyone else tried Jo Malone fragrances?

Such a good idea on the new thread pcc
For xmas I got Prada from my boy, he loved it, and I was impressed with his choice. I wasnt too sure for the first couple of days, because it is so different from what I wear normally, but i am really enjoying it. I feel 'grown up' when I wear it! I also got Versace Bright Crystal - this one is my new obsession. Oh la la I smell divine!! hehe
At the moment I have been wearing alot of eau de two peas - in fig and vanilla. The vanilla one is amazing. The fig one is nice, but sometimes a bit too sweet for me.
I am yet to try any of the Jo Malone ones, but hanging out for the honeysuckle and jasmine one - these are two of my very favourite smells!!! if you could choose just one Jo Malone, which one would it be? I hear Gardenia is amazing
Next on my purchase list is Versace Crystal Noir, Michael Kors Island Fiji and Stella!! Maybe throw in the new nina ricci :D

Agreed, thanks PCC, great thread...
My all-time desert island favourites are Marc Jacobs, Kenzo Parfum D'Ete and Stella McCartney. I couldn't narrow it down to one, impossible!
Lately I'm trying to move away from my gardenia obsession to other florals and also musk-based fragrances (light to start me off!). I'm planning to buy the Renee Jasmine oil and Narcisco Rodriguez For Her.
I'm not a huge fan of anything really sweet as these fragrances tend to give me a headache...but am willing to try just about anything (PCC I know you're a fan of sweeter scents, what would you recommend for a beginner?)
Also haven't had much luck with oriental or woody fragrances (again due to the dratted headache) :explode:
PS KP I have the Jo Malone Vintage Gardenia and it's gorgeous, not too heavy and with warmer notes. I'm keen to try the others too, so let me know when you try the Honeysuckle & Jasmine one. PCC what do you think about this?

Hi Kitten Princess and Raspberryberet,
Firstly thank you for your interest in this thread. My all time favourite thing to talk about is fragrance. I am totally obsessed.
Kittten would you believe I also have the fig and Vanilla Eau De Two Peas. I love them. The fig is very sweet and not for the faint hearted but the Vanilla is gorgeous (Dannii Minogue is a huge fan).
I also have the new Nina Ricci and I love it more than words. It's quite sweet and has toffee apples in it. The bottle is a little red apple with silver leaves and it is so cute! I also have Michael Korrs Island Fiji and love it majorly! I love the original Island to. Have you had an oppurtunity to smell the Newish Michael edt? It is amazing and a lot more subtle than the Michael edp. I also have Bright Crystal and love it to!
Do check out the Jo Malone range Kitten Princess it is truely beautiful.
Raspberry Beret,
It's difficult to recommend a sweet scent for a beginner as the sweet scents are often very sweet. Perhaps Burberry Brit edt (not the edp) it contains suggared almonds bu isn't as sweet as say Lolita Lempicka, Nina Ricci, Britney Spears etc etc. I think it is a very classy soft sweet scent. It's always best to try before you buy anyway.
Also Echo by Davidoff is a nice sweet one and guess what Raspberry it has Raspberries in it!
Hope hat helps PCC xo

Guys what are the more unusual or exotic fragrances you've tried/bought?
I found J & E Atkinsons - I Coloniali at a store in Berrima of all places, and it's just beautiful. It's a light, white floral 'tender water' with Chinese peony flowers in the bottom. You shake it up and the peony adds to the scent.
I'm also keen to try Monyette Paris perfume oil, a warm tropical fragrance with coconut and tiare. It's been compared to Kai but more creamy than green.
Have you discovered anything you'd like to share??

Apart for a love of most oriental fragrances, I do have an "odd" two in my collection, both picked up from Kleins Perfumery in Melbourne.
They are Vanille by L"Othantique a french company that has the simplest white boxes, bottles and what looks like handwritten labels! The other is in the Roger & Gallet collection called Eau de Gingembre or Gingerlily. It is a light fresh unisex fragrance, great for a hot day, must dig mine out a bit more often! Thanks for the reminder!

Dark purple box girls, hope they still carry it, need to pick up a new one too. I remember they were really well priced. Check out the French ones if you can, the packaging makes it look like they were created just for you. Went through a vanilla phase and this smells heavenly, almost a bit syrupy though!:ashamed:

Does anyone layer their fragrances. When researching the Jo Malone site I learned that her fragrances are designed to be layered with other fragrances in her range to create a distinctly personal scent. Their is even a recipe guide! Thought this was kind of cool.
I quite often use a shower gel, deoderant, lotion and matching scent but that's about as fancy as I get.
I also sometimes spray my fragrance and then rub in the matching lotion on top and then put fragrance over the top of the lotion again. Some people think that putting the lotion over the top of the fragrance will bruise the notes in the scent but it actually seals in the fragrance and hence makes it last longer.
I have quite a lot of my favourite fragrances in both the edp and edt strength! I sometimes layer them over the top of each other and this also makes the scent last longer.

Hi pcc, I have only ever layered my Chanel No 5 products as this is the only range I have numerous items of the same fragrance and only when I have an extremely long day or function to attend so the scent will be extended.

I got With Love by Hilary Duff for xmas by request but its not as strong as i'm used too so i end up using 4 sprays in total per application. I like but i just havne't had any compliments yet and usually gett compliments is a good sign.
Next on my hit list is Intimately Beckham for her, even though its is Victoria Beckham i don't care because it smells good. Then Glow after dark by J-Lo, its very new and not released yet but i loved Glow so this should be good too. I also wants some more Glow by J-lo.

Forgive me for jumping in and answering this one Raspberryberet and Princess Precious. I have With Love by Hilary Duff and think it is a beautiful scent. In fact one of the better celebrity scents that I have ever smelt.
With Love is a warm oriental fragrance and includes notes of mangosteen fruit, exotic spices, chai latte, mangosteen blossom, cocobolo wood, balsam, incense, amber milk and amber musk.
I think it is very warm and lightly spicy. You can certainly smell the milky amber note. I consider it to be a lighter fragrance of the oriental family. It is and edp but is subtle not at all overpowering (which is why I love it).
It costs $79 for the 50ml and you can also get the rollerball/lipgloss duo for around $39 at Myer.
Princess Precious,
I am a fragrance addict and I get really peeved sometimes because people don't tell me I smell nice. When I ask people why they don't tell me I smell good they say "it's because you always do". Don't hold it against the fragrance because you haven't received compliments as yet, I am sure they will come. Usually they come when you least expect it. If you want to make it smell stronger I would suggest you get the matching body lotion as I have found this really gives it extra oomph! I always spray around 8 - 10 sprays in total when applying fragrance. I also spray it into the air and walk through it as the fragrance will catch on your clothing and linger for the entire day.
Hope this helps you out!

Don't get me wrong i love With love by Hilary Duff buts so new to me because i've been using White Musk from the body shop for years and its pretty strong. So i'm sure i'll get used to this one too.
I would say it was a light sweet florally musk fragrance, not old fashioned panache' type musk but clean and not too strong.
I've metioned this on a couple of other threads... but I bought Smiley EDT the other day. It's available at Kit (who just opened at Myer in Chatswood, which I was sooooooo excited about).
I don't know if it actually has anti-depressant qualities, but i do know that it smells really, really good...
Has anyone else bought it or smelled it. I think it might be becoming my favorite all time fragrance!!:D

VeeE,
I have Smiley! I got it in December when I was in Melbourne! My first impression was that I hated the bottle but on the insistance o the Kit girls I decided to give the fragrance a try. I absolutely loved it and bought it on the spot! It is so amazing how it changes over time. I also love that a percentage of the profits made from Smiley products go towards helping people with visual imparement. You might also have noticed Brail on the smiley bottle!
My interpretation of Smiley is that it starts off quite citrusy and then turns into a warm musk! Beeeeeautiful!
I did notice the brail on the bottle, but I didn't realise that some profits went to charity!! That makes it even better.
:worship:
I'm so glad you love it too pcc!

Today I received my order from Adore Beauty! I got Renee Snow Peach fragrance 30ml Parfum and the matching body lotion! They are gorgeous:hearts:!!
I think having Renee on the forum has created a monster in me as I am suddenly loving all things Renee! I sent my friend who lives in Sydney on a hunt to get me some Renee scented candles, they are gorgeous! Has anyone noticed that the Renee 30ml bottles are almost identical to the Jo Malone 30ml bottles? Even the ribbon on the Renee packaging is the same ribbon Jo Malone use to tie their bags!
As most of you will know I also bought the Renee Jasmine and Musk oils just before Christmas and they are divine! If you can get yourself something from the Renee range. Her products are of a very high quality and the fact that Renee is an Aussie is even more reason to buy her stuff!

As Chance by Chanel is my signature scent, even thougth I were a diff fragrance every day, I decided I needed the twist & spray version. Perfect to use on a night out... so I bought that the other day.
And today I popped into Perfume Connection & they have an awesome sale on, so I bought myself Burberry Brit Red (Limited Ed). My gf had it & ran out, & I loved the smell of it, so am so excited that I got one for me now! :D

Dior Addict
Carolina Herrara 212 Sexy

KittenPrincess,
I have the EDP Narcisco (pink), but here is what is says about the EDT, which I think is the same... but I prefer the scent of the EDP.
"A heart of musk with facets of orange blossom and vanilla and honey radiating out form within it’s musky heart". And it is from the Mossy Woods family.
I hope this helps :)
PS I was supposed to be present fragrance shopping today, while I did buy a men's fragrance, Burberry the Original for Men, I discovered Vera Wang Princess. I didn't buy it cause I feel bad about all the fragrances I have, but I can't get it out of my mind.

Hi Kitten Princess,
I have the Narcisco edt in the black bottle. I think it is a nice fragrance with a sexy edge to it. I am a huge musk fan so probably a bit biased here. I think it smells like musk lollies! It's actually quite a complex scent and I prefer to use it at night.
With fragrance I think you instantaneously know whether you like it or not. Ok so it's good to let it settle on your skin and let the notes develop but I generally find that if I don't like something from the very first sniff I am not going to like it when it develops.
I have had so many shop assistants try and talk me into buying something that they like with the promise it will grow on me - Oh please this is the fragrance collector they are trying to pull the wool over! Lol:chuckle: !! Oh and I just love it when I ask them what the notes are in the fragrance when they either don't know or better yet tell you ingredients that aren't even in it! Lol:chuckle:

As our resident fragrance collector I thought I would let you in on a few of the new fragrances due for launch throughout 2007.
Aesop are launching a scent called Mystra. I don't know whether this is unisex or for men or women but is supposedly being launched early this year.
Britney Spears is launching a new fragrance around February called Midnight Fantasy. It comes in the same bottle as fantasy except it is navy blue instead of pink. It's notes include black cherry, plum, orchid, freesia, musk and amber.
Demeter is launching a couple of new fragrances called Firey Curry, Red Head In Bed and ginger cookie.
For all you Omnia Fans on the forum Bvlgari is launching Omnia Amethyste.
Michael Korrs is again extending his Island line to include Island Hawaii.
Vera Wang is bringing out Truely Pink (in the same shaped bottle as the original Vera Wang). Notes include white freesia, Cassis, lychee blossom, peony, pink rose accord, creamy woods, iris and violet wood.
Estee Lauder are bringing out a new fragrance called Emerald Dream.
For the boys Joop are launching Go! Notes include blood orange, rhubarb, chilli pepper, cypress, violet. bourbon geranium and spruce balsam.
There are a lot of new fragrances being Launched in 2007. I will fill you in from time to time what's coming up!

As for the Britney fragrances, putting aside that they are actually by Britney they are quite nice. I would suggest they would be far too sweet for you but Midnight Fantasy does sound good.

Not always that observant when it comes to advance warning on new fragrances but the latest US Harpers Bazaar has a couple of newies.
The first with a very Marie Antoinette theme is Juicy Couture. (Yes I know lots of you will have opionions on this designer and more so the people who wear the gear!!). Has a peel of swatch and to me smells a bit cheap, it is definitely a floral but no ooh la la in there for me.Very interersting bottle though, crystal lid with some sort of crown/locket dangling from it and a picture of a "shield" depicting two terriers holding the juicy crown.Bit bizare but certainly eye catching!
I have heard you guys mention Michael Kors Island and there is now one varient called Hawaii. Not sure how new it is but contains notes of citrus, clementine, orange flower and Hawaiian ginger lili amplified by white amber.
Another spotted - F By Ferragamo. Ad doesnt tell me anything so would love to know if anyone has come across this one.
This mag is choc full of new designer handbags and accessories, will have to mail this one to pcc!

It smells almost exactly like real coconuts. Note that this is NOT the same as the Reef Oil type "coconut scent". Think of a fresh coconut split in half.

Girls I received a gorgeous little box of fragrnaces for Christmas from my cousin. They are by Aussie brand Urban Rituelle. The coming in an elegant white box complete with beeding and feathers (the box couls easily be used for storing trinkets after you have used the fragrances).
The box contains 6 x 4.4ml rollerball fragrances in the Eau De Parfum strength. Scents include:
Tahitian Gardenia (subtle but so gorgeous my fave from the set)
Siam Ginger (my 2nd fave)
Persian Jasmeen (all you jasmine lovers will dig this one)
Saffron Sari (smells like cherries to me)
White Kimono ( a clean smelling scent)
Balinese Temple Flowers ( a gorgeous floral)
You can also buy some of the fragrances in a full sized bottle. The bottles are gorgeous and vintage inspired complete with atomiser. As far as I know Ginger doesn't come in the full size (grrrr)!
The fragrances are quite cheap (around$45) compared to other eae de parfum's on the market and the brand is Aussie. You can get them at The Perfume Connection.

Bit more goss on fragrances..
Ronan Keating is releasing a male and female fragrance in the UK for Valentine's Day. The male one, Believe has notes of Sicilian Lemon, Lavender and Clary Sage. The female one, Hope is musk and amber based (I need to smell this one!). The nice thing ( and yes he IS such a nice guy) is that all proceeds go to the Marie Keating Foundation. Ronan's mother died of cancer in 1998.
Meanwhile Clive Owen (YUM!) is the face of Lancome's new Hypnose for men as well as promoting their male skin care (they have a new male anti-aging range released in March).

Fascinating article on this website. You may have noticed a film just about to be released called Perfume - A Story of a Murderer. Well Monsieur Thierry Mugler (of Angel fame) has "interpreted" the movie and produced a coffret of bizarre and often repulsive fragrances. You must see this, scroll down for a run-down on each of the fragrances...... Warning, not recommended if you have just eaten!

The Feb Allure Mag has the bestest article on Coco Chanel and the new fragrances (page 178). The perfumer Jacques Polge has interpreted her lifestyle, abodes and likes into amazing sounding fragrances.
"Bel Respiro" is also the retreat Ms Chanel purchased in 1920, Her passion for the outdoors inspired this one, a "green" scent.
"31 Rue Cambon", the address of her salon in Paris. This one incorportates bergamot, patchouli, oak moss and labdanum.
"Coromandel" (an oriental, must smell this!) was inspired by her love of oriental screens of which she had quite a collection.Benzoin and heavier spices of the East.
"28 La Pausa" another retreat flanked by olive trees and ringed by irises. This one contains iris pallida known as sweet iris and is one of the most expensive products available to perfumers.
They are also re-releasing Chanel 22, 84 years after its original launch.

I'm over department store fragrances at the moment, perhaps forever and not because I'm a snob but because I was sick of smelling like 100 other girls down the street.
Right now I'm waiting for "Brulure de Rose" by Parfumerie Generale to arrive in the mail, it's a nice rose scent with a sweet jam like quality. I don't think it would be up everyone's alley being so sticky sweet but it's sure up mine! :)
I also want to buy Renee's Jasmine, I LOVE jasmine! Has anyone tried this?

NARSissistic, must just be you and me on the forum at the mo!
There are a couple of threads on the Renee fragrances, have a look at the reviews.
I bought the Jasmine oil a couple of weeks ago and have been wearing it solidly every since. It's lovely, not too sweet as some white florals can be. Nice hint of warmth too. Good staying power. I'd definitely recommend it. I'm going to grab the EDT so I can do some layering.

Raspberry, I'll have to get off my butt and check out the reviews on Renee's Jasmine but it does sound nice!
I'm on the hunt for an authentic Jasmine scent but I've heard it's VERY hard to replicate. We have some Star Jasmine plants just outside our loungeroom and kitchen windows and when the weather is warm and there's a breeze our house is filled with the most intoxicating SWEET jasmine scent that almost knocks me off my feet! I've yet to smell that same scent out of a bottle though.....
jaime

NARSissistic, I know the exact scent you are describing. We used to have the vine right next to our front door and it was the most pleasant welcoming scent ever. Needless to say Jasmine is now my favourite flower. However, I personally don't think the Renee Jasmine replicates it exactly, but it is definately the closest I have ever found.

also remember that your fragrances wont last as long in summer as they do in winter. They tens to evaporate faster due to the heat in summer.
Does anyone else have seasonal scents like some that you wear in summer and others you wear in winter?

Pink Cupcake, can you believe I have never counted my collection? I think I have roughly 50 in rotation at the moment but have swapped about 20 or so bottles. I also have numerous decants and over 100 samples.
I'm going to make a list of what I have for anyone interested...
As for summer and winter scents, I definitely wear lighter fruity or zingy florals in summer and heavier or gourmand type scents in winter. For me Comptoir Sud Pacifique Amour Cacao is a winter scent and Antonia's Flowers Floret is definitely summer.....:sunnies:

Whilst on the topic of fragrance I thought I would just mention another couple of newies.
I had a sniff of J'Lo's Glow After Dark on the weekend and in all I thinks it's nice. It's certainly better in my opinion than some of her other offerings. Ok so the whole "glow" theme is getting a bit boring (this is her 4th version of the glow theme) but the chrome bottle is quite funky.
Glow After Dark's notes include - Mandarin, melon, white cherry, passionfruit, jasmine, peony, freesia, rose, orange flower, pink musk, tree moss, blonde woods and patchouli.
I could certainly pick the jasmine in it at first sniff, so for those who are a bit partial to jasmine go and have a sniff.
I also see that the new Bvlgari Omnia Amethyste and Valentino's Rock and Rose have been launched. Has anyone had a sniff yet?

Agent Provocateur are releasing a new fragrance called Maitresse, coming out at the end of this month. I smelled it yesterday and I love it! More floral and less heavy than the original - they are calling it an "aldehydic modern floral". The notes are ylang ylang, white lotus petal, violette leaves, jasmine sambac, turkish rose oil, osmanthus flower, orris bud, amber, cashmere musk, patchouli, sandalwood.

I don't like amber that much in perfumes, but I do really like Stella McCartney's solid amber perfume. It's just pure amber - not alcoholy if you know what I mean, and leaves a soft, warm scent on me that lingers for much longer than spray perfumes. It's in a gorgeous little tray that is solid metal (it's deceptively heavy - but not "heavy" since it'sso small -if you get what I mean:ashamed: ). I apply it to my pulse points and my body heat seems to keep it releasing a subtle scent all day.:p

I have a few on rotation at the moment, my favourite ones are:
BLV
Alessandro dell' Acqua (love the soapy smell of this one)
Hugo Boss Woman
Anna Sui
Lolita Lempicka (little bit too strong, but smells yummy)
Aqua di Gio
Has anyone here tried Coco Mademoiselle? (I'm sure plenty of you have). I absolutley love this fragrance. I really want to buy the moistuising mist of it. What does everyone think?

This is my HG of perfumes, just suits me to a T. It's pretty without being overpowering,it's classic and only I can smell it most of the time. My gorgeous boy picked it out (quite surpirsing since I've not been a fan of his other choices in the past:hearts: ), and it's the only one I keep buying OVER and OVER and OVER again!!!:encore: Don't buy it though, I want to be the only one who smells this beautiful!!!!:penguin:

Kitten Princess, as a bona fide fragrance junkie (and owner of some 30+ perfumes) I have recently rediscovered the Body Shop fragrances. I haven't given them enough credit!! Although the Neroli Jasmine isn't really "me", it is lovely and my mum bought a bottle of it when she was out and stuck without perfume (you can see where my obsession comes from).
Girls, if you feel like a new fragrance but don't want one from the $100+ category, try the Body Shop! They have about 15 different perfume oils ($17.95 - bargain) as well as their other lines like Moonflower, White Musk, Oceanus etc. Lovely stuff!

The new Annick Goutal bottle is divine!!! The fragrance doesn't sound like me (I'm not an oriental girl at all) but that bottle is just gorgeous. It would look very different on my dressing table!!
I hate when a yucky frag has a gorgeous bottle or a gorgeous frag has a yucky bottle. My current fave, 212 by Carolina Herrera, has the most stupid ugly bottle I've ever seen. It looks like a cross between a spaceship and a dildo!! I like vintage girly style, not ultra-mod fugly style. And there are so many perfumes that have to-die-for bottles but are filled with juice I don't like!! Not fair I say.

It's a travel exclusive and I probably won't be going overseas this year :tears: but my mum is probably going away next month so I'm thinking of asking her to grab it for me. Hi Miss Fendilicious,
I actually received a couple of samples of this in the mail the other day (good to have contacts at the fragrance foundation).
Une Goutte Sur Un Petale or A Drop On A Petal By Issey Miyake includes notes of Citrus, Mimosa, Rose, Aquatic Notes, Amber, Woods and Musk. It features Guest Notes (whatever they are) of Mandarin Orange Zest, Mimosa and Amber.
My frst impression was that it was a bit too citrusy for me. It has quite a nice dry down and after it had settled smelled quite nice. I probably wouldn't buy it because I am not a watery citrus scent lover. This will no doubt become a hit with a cult following as all Issey Miyake scents do. It comes in Edt strength and is available in both 50 and 100ml bottles.

I am totally passionate about perfume. It really is the one beauty thing that I know a lot about. I think about perfume on a constant basis and for many years I have become obsessed with smelling different things and learning all I can about not only the fragrances I like but also those I don't.
To me perfume isn't just something you buy in a bottle. It really is anything that smells or carries a scent (ok things such as dog poo etc are not acceptable).
I have noticed on the forum a lot of people have opinions on celebrity fragrances etc and wouldn't wear something because of who it's by. I however never take these sorts of things into consideration. I judge a fragrance purely on whether or not it appeals to my senses. Even if I hate a fragrance I like to research it and try and figure out what it is about the scent that I don't like.
Does anyone else have a deep passion for perfume like me? So far my cousin is the only person I know that is as into fragrance as I am.

Just another little new update I thought you might all be interested in:
Donna Karan is milking her Be Delicious Range for all it is worth by including two new additions to the range.
Be Delicious Picnic In The Park: Is said to be a much lighter and more playful version of the original Be Delicious. It will come in a 125ml Edt strength bottle. I think this is going to a summer smash hit when it comes to Australia.
Be Delicious Shine: Comes in the original Be Delicious bottle but with a green metalic base. It is going to be available in EDP 50 and 100ml. They are also doing a range of body products to compliment this fragrance with one being a spray on body gloss.
Both of these Donna Karan fragrances are said to be limited edition.
More news from the house of Beckham, David Beckham is launching a different take on his men's global smash hit Instinct with the launch of Intense Instinct. I am thinking these celebrities like to follow on with the one range, maybe it's too hard to think of another name and fragrance!
I am also pleased to report that Sarah Jessica Parker is launching a brand new fragrance in the United States in July (should come down under slightly after). Thislatest offering from SJP is callet Covet. It will be and Edt fragrance available in both 50 and 100ml bottles.
Top Notes Include: Wet gewwns, geranium leaves, sicilian lemon, lavender and chocolate.
Heart Notes Include: Honeysuckle, magnolia and muguet.
Base Notes Include: Musk, vetiver, boise de cashmere, teakwood and amber.
The Body Shop are also launching a new fragrance sometime this year called Zestini. All I have found out about it is that it is very citrusy!

PCC perfume is my great love. Passionate? YES. Very. I love reading and writing about perfumes, have about 100 bottles and boxes and boxes of decants and samples. I love swapping perfumes which is a great way to try things not available in Aus. Perfume is endlessly interesting to me. I do not care if it's a celebrity perfume, I will sniff anything and if I like I will wear it.
I also have a growing book collection about perfume.

Hahaha PCC I am soooo like that about perfume. It's absolutely obscene how often I think about perfume. I often plan an outfit around it, and if I happen to leave the house without spraying myself (which admittedly hasn't happened in a few years) I get panicky and have to stop at a shop to apply something from a tester! Like you, I'm really interested in fragrance and I love to read about it. I have a few books about perfume and subscribe to a few perfume blogs. I don't really have anyone in my life who shares this with me, so it's sort of a weird solitary thing!!
I've always been a "smeller", and according to my Grandma, my mum has been one too since she was a little girl. My mum and I are the same in that we will walk through a shop and pick up anything that looks like it would have a smell. You should see us in a gift shop that has little soaps and stuff, let alone a department store!!!! She loves perfume almost as much as I do, although she's not as "into" the nitty-gritty of it as I am. I really think it's genetic, because both of my brothers are into fragrance and have little collections of boy-perfumes.
Sometimes I get desperate for fragrance talk, so I'll go into a perfume boutique and start chatting to the ladies in there as I test things! They probably think I'm quite mad (but I buy enough so they know I'm kosher).

I'm into perfume but still very much an amateur, learning about different notes and what suits my skin chemistry etc. This forum has been a great help for that (mostly due to PCC!) and I occasionally check a couple of perfume blogs for the latest reviews.
I don't tend to worry about celebrity endorsement though I have to admit sometimes it turns me off :redcheeks; but I try to ignore that annoying, prissy little voice inside and just take things on their merits! From what I saw in a recent news.com.au story (makeup survey thread), lots of other people don't take celeb campaigns into account either, which is interesting.

I think being a woman helps with our olfactory (sense of smell). It is certainly more fine tuned than most men's. Pregnancy can also heighten your sense of smell. I am not ultra-sensitive to subtle fragrance notes but can usually identify them when told they are included. This has certainly helped in my wine appreciation too!
It was the most magical experience RBB. It was held at the Hilton many years ago with just 8 of us there so it was very hands on. We talked a lot about the grand fragrances houses and the origins of fragrance. There were a huge number of vials and lots of long lengths of blotting paper and we were encouraged to create our own fragrances from the number of top, middle and base notes. It did produce a nasty headache each day though!

Ozkat and Teacake,
I am so excited that I have found the two of you (oh and raspberry don't worry I will have you up to speed on all things perfume in a jiffy).
I live and breath perfume. I now have almost 620 bottles and it grows by the week. I buy at least one fragrance every fortnight if not weekly (I have been known to buy 7 at a time). I even buy fragrances I don't necessarily like just because I love the bottles that they come in.
I download everything I can find on perfume and print it out. I have many scrapbooks of fragrance articles and facts about perfume. My family think I am nuts (although my Mum has a very healthy perfume collection herself, largely thanks to me) for buying so much fragrance and books about fragrance. I picked up a great little book from Klein's perfumery about the history of perfume, it's brilliant it goes through the perfume construction from beginning to end and then tells of the idea behind the bottles and gives a history on the most famous perfume houses etc.
I am always on the look out for something new or different. Yay for us the perfume fanatics!

620 bottles!! I thought my collection was large at around 30 bottles! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: Don't worry, it would be a hell of a lot larger if I wasn't a uni student! In fact, I worry if I will ever be motivated enough to buy a house or make any grown-up commitments, because every $100 that would go towards mortgage payments could be going towards perfume!!! LOL my little brother often says to me that perfume is my currency, because whenever I express outrage at a certain amount of money (in any context), I'll be like "The plumber charged $280?! That's like two bottles of perfume!" or "I'd never spend $3000 on a TV, that's like 20 bottles of perfume!".
I'm at the point now where I hate the smell of plain air - hence my scented candle/oil obsession!
I also (this is embarassing - but I told my brother about it and he admitted to doing it too!) smell people when they walk past me. Not an accidental smell but a deliberate one!! I don't obviously sniff them, but i'll consciously smell the air when they walk past to see what they smell like. Yep, I'm a psycho.
It's so nice to find someone else who shares your obsession though, right?

That's great PCC!! I will post you a list tomorrow of my book collection.
I have cut down on a lot of my fragrances through swapping, kind of tossing in extras etc.. which makes other people happy. It was starting to bother me that there were quite a few I would never wear or actively disliked, though I can also get into the idea of having a library of fragrance. I am planning to buy a perfume cupboard in the near future, it will be interesting to see how I feel about the quantity once I can see them all at once. They are currently in boxes, sorted thematically according to my own feelings about them (ie there are things in the greens box which aren't technically greens but I think of as green.) My relationship with the quanitity, reasons for buying, methods of acquisition etc.. have all evolved over time and will no doubt continue to do so.
My tastes are pretty diverse though even after all these years I still only manage a passing respect for vetiver. I love florals and now that it is autumn I am throwing myself on my orientals and vanillas with the lust of a long lost lover. When I wore Prada for the first time since last winter it almost brought tears to my eyes it was so beautiful..

I am a psycho I even have a temperature controled cabinet to store them in. However my collection is so massive now that I have them stored in boxes in my cupboards as I have ran out of room. I will post more on my obsessin tomorrow.

I love that you think of your perfumes in terms of their colour!! I am very similar. I have very strong colour associations that I just can't shake.
I'm also not the biggest fan of vetiver. I can't bring myself to love chypres either. I wonder how old you are? I'm 24 and I have a feeling that greens, woods and herbaceous notes will reveal their majesty to us as we age. I find that as I get older, I'm venturing slightly from the floral/fruity/white musk/vanilla fragrances into some slightly woodier and leafy smells. I think your sense of smell develops more sophistication somehow.

ozcat I'm 44 and vetiver has yet to reveal much majesty to me! However I do appreciate a lot more things, not through age but through exposure. Just like your tastes in food expand as you grow up and are exposed to more things I think constantly sniffing and thinking really expands your olfactory tastes.
Chypres have never wowed me and I admit I've always thought of the folks who worship them as ummm.. more refined than me. Yes, silly, I know! I do enjoy Mitsouko (the edp and parfum) but so many others leave me cold or even annoy me. Herbaceous notes are things that I appreciate but I can't say I really enjoy. The vitamins of fragrance, lol. For instance I was wearing Lutens Douce Amere the other day and I only really enjoyed it in the drydown once the herbaceous notes had finally faded.
My revelation last year was MUSK. Previously I either seemingly could not smell it at all or was quite sickened by it. I still dislike Kenzo's Flower intensely but I can actually enjoy, smell and wear some musks now. This is really amazing to me. It's a journey isn't it?

Luisa your seminar with Michael Edwards must have been amazing!! I would have so loved to do that. What a great opportunity (I wonder if he will ever come out here again).

Pity, but I doubt it! This was 17 years ago when he was still an authority but not with the world-wide profile he now enjoys today. A very charismatic man, even back then.
Hey, which Musk fragrances have you discovered Teacake?

Haha I feel terribly unsophisticated whenever anyone mentions Mitsouko because I despise it! Peach and oakmoss? Anyway I'm still waiting for my big Guerlain revelation - I feel like it's a secret society I have yet to join. I'm a-tryin but I haven't found my "in" yet!

ozcat I know what you mean. That is the only one I wear, oh I do dabble in Insolence now and then but I don't even think of that as a Guerlain. I have tried many of the old ones and they really don't do anything for me. Shalimar, don't even get me started..
However I love just about everything made by Caron, another old house with a similar base to many of their perfumes.

I'll have to think.. there is the NR for Her edt and the L'erbolario I mentioned. I have managed to enjoy sniffing other musks in shops (notice I am not exactly falling over to buy them.) I will get back to you on that as far as names go (falling asleep here).

I love Insolence and for me it still smells and feels like a Guerlain...albeit a much younger and more heavily-marketed version!
