View Full Version : Looking for ancestors - from The Melbourne Age's Natasha Hughes

Gordon Espinet, MAC Cosmetics' vice-president of makeup artistry, was warm and enigmatic on a recent visit to the Chapel Street store - and seemingly intrigued with people's ancestry. ''You look like a little French doll - love the big lashes, the cupid's bow lips and the blonde ringlets - what are your parents?'' he asked one of the assistants who, disingenuously and doll-like, replied ''Australian'' then after a couple of blank beats added that one side of her family had been French. "I knew it!'' said Gordon, before turning appraisingly to me.

I love hearing about people’s ancestry and trying to guess it – not sure I base my ‘look’ on my heritage though. I’m a ‘typical’ Australian – a meting pot of a few bloodlines! Mainly Dutch, Irish, Danish and English, which I think shows up in my paleface attributes, lol. I have been asked by complete strangers if I am from Scandinavia or Holland a lot but only one person ever correctly guessed that I have a lot of Irish in me too.

People always think I'm Irish 'cause I have red hair, but not really.... mua haha.

My make-up teacher guessed that I had asian heritage, the first person ever!!! She was like "Your skin is tooo yellow!"

I'm half Irish and half aussie but not sure if you could tell really. I've got dark hair, very pale skin and dark brown eyes. Living here in Ireland i get asked am i Italian sometimes? What the? Sometimes courtesy of my aussie accent i get asked am i english (grrrrr). They love aussies here but i don't fit their typical image of Aussies

You have the milk skin and dark hair of a welsh - and your facial features in some respects.

Raspberry, your skin hints at your Scottish heritage too...

Is it your dad who is Sri Lanken (I am assuming a dark skinned one?) He would have something else in him somewhere and even though the darker skin is the more dominant gene, that recessive light skinned gene with your mum's would have produced that hott chick, Ve Ve Voom.

Yeah, he's not super dark. His mum was english. So yes, maybe the recessive pale face came out!

Ahhh, yes enough said! 2 recessive genes were in that sperm and egg when you were made. Does your bro have the same as you or can you pick up on the Sri Lanken?

Anglo-Irish with some indigenous blood thrown in here - although I am often asked if I am of Spanish descent, and that's before people hear my name.

the answer is that if I do, it's several centuries back - my paternal Grandfather's family were from Galway (Black Irish). I generally don't mention the indigenous part, people get all weird. And I can't be bothered with that sh*t, my bloodlines don't make me any different to anyone else.

I'm not 100% sure to be honest. I think we all originally came out from England/Wales/Scotland etc emigrating to NZ and Oz. My bro recently did a family tree which totally blew me away.

French and Irish with suspected Italian that cannot be confirmed nor denied. My entire name is actually French now, even my surname.

I'm French, Scottish, German and Greek. So I'm 3/4 pale northern European and 1/4 wog. Pretty simple really.

Oh I love hearing everyone's backgrounds - its so fascinating. I love the whole family tree thing - I love knowing the chain that brought me to where/who I am today. Its like an invisible cord connecting me somehow to the beginning of time, lol.

Did you ever watch that family tree show on SBS? Each episode was dedicated to the journey a famous Australian went on to discover their familial heritage. I loved the one with Kate Cebrano - her thoughts on needing to discover where her creative/artistic talents and passions came from really rang true with me.

I used to love this stuff but nowadays it makes me pretty sad, having such a divided and estranged family.

Oh Loola (I wanted to insert the hug icon but my smilies won't work all of a sudden). All families have good and bad eggs - you are most definitely a good egg so I'm sure there were more in your family tree. xo

My background is Lebanese, but there is some speculation of French ... my dad recently told me our last name was changed by his great grandfather, and means grace... just like someones first name I know! I always get Italian and French, alot say because of my freckles!

My (very distant) background is Irish on my mother's side and my dad claims Swedish (a million years ago). My husband is Maltese with a French surname, so French must have been in there somewhere too...Makes my kids very much Heinz variety :chuckle:

My surname was changed way back too because of a crazy relative who wanted to remove himself from the family. The funny thing is, he only changed one letter in the name - not sure how radical that really was, lol.
