At the cinema - saw "Little Miss Sunshine" last week. Funniest thing I have seen in ages!! Highly recommend it to anyone who likes a bit of off-the-wall humour (e.g. Arrested Development, Scrubs etc).
On DVD - watched "Slither" (gross but hilarious) and "Nanny McPhee" (quirky and fun but forgettable).

I am half way through wolf creek. I was alone when watching it... I need someone in the house before I watch the other half..
I have seriously bitten off most of my nails!
any lovely strong boys out there wanting to hold my hand?
:)
"The Devil Wears Prada" was my last visit to the cinemas.
I'm a hopleass book reader, but I absolutly loved this book! SO much better then the movie.

my last was also little miss sunshine...it was great!!!!
and before that the devil wears prada........i really liked it
i now have the book to read :)
This is the one with Susan Sarandon and Sam Neill. It had it's moments and there were enough twists to keep you interested but I'm still not sure it finished strong enough. It started out really good and I was sitting back deep in my chair trying not to jump and cry out in the middle of the theatre (like the little old lady next to me) wondering what the hell had I gotten myself into!
There were typical 'movie moments' (but not too many) where you hear yourself muttering "oh please, are they really expecting us to buy this??" but overall it was better than alot of other movies out at the moment.
I also recently saw Little Miss Sunshine and thought it was worth seeing. You laugh, you care for the characters and you forget it's an American film.
I want to see Children of Men next .... I'm not a movie buff, really I'm not ....!!!:)

Not yet but a great cast! Going to see Boytown tomorrow night, know someone in the cast but I am sure the highlight will be Glenn Robbins and Mick Molloy!
Really loved the Devil Wears Prada! Salivating at all those gorgeous outfits and trying to guess the designers- wasnt that Chanel outfit a dead giveaway though?! Thought Merryl Streep was fabulous. Was the book really modelled on Anna Wintour???...

Hi girls! The Departed is AMAZING - I absolutely loved it. Lots of thrills and perving to be had (oh my God check out Leo doing push up things on his bed in prison... mmmm... he is now A Man). Great acting all round and lots of anticipation.
Also saw Little Miss Sunshine recently (loved it) and The Devil Wears Prada too - I agree the book was sooo much better.

The last movies I saw was the 911 one with Nicholas Cage and Maggie Gyllenhall. Not the sort of movie I would normally see but I love Maggie and I my best friend and I were bored so thought we'd check it out as we had seen just about everything else. It was very slow and a bit long winded but the story was ok.

Yesterday I went and saw "The Prestige" - with Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson.
Hugh and Christian were worth the $15 :hearts: (especially the bits where Hugh gets his shirt off!!) but the rest of the movie... well... I wasn't bored but it didn't quite achieve the twists and turns that it was aiming for.

The last movie I saw was The Departed, and it is one of the best movies I have ever seen (and I'm a harsh critic). Talk about explosive! This is also the first movie that I have really liked Leonardo DeCaprio in, as an actor, he was brilliant. I highly recommend this movie.
Before this I saw The Devil Wears Prada, and loved it, Meryl Streep was her usual magnificent self, I love the fact that she can play such diverse characters and still be believable. Very funny.

I recently saw the Departed too, never liked Leonardo Di Caprio but this film changed my mind. Loved Matt Damon too and if Jack Nicholson doesnt at least get nominated for an Oscar then there is something wrong in Tinseltown!
Also loved Devil Wears Prada and Children of Men was a film I would definitely recommend!

I also saw the new Bond film. Its not normally my thing but when we went to the cinema it was all kids movies (no kids with us) or Bond, so Bond it was. While I was hypnotised by those peircing blue eyes, my boy was in lust with all the sportscars. He nearly cried when one of them crashed.
Today we took the kids to see Charlotte's Web. It is really good and made me cry when she died. I was trying so hard not to as I wasn't wearing my waterproof mascara!

I saw Bond a few weeks ago and i love daniel craig as the new bond! apparantly, the original money penny (is that her name?! i've haven't seen any old school bond movies) really liked Daniel Craig because he has a "very chewable bottom lip"...i guess that's one way of looking at it!
ALso saw the Holiday yesterday and LOVED it. Jude Law is amazing...But yes, the actual movie itself is also really good! Jack Black was surprisingly good as well!

I'm so with you on that one. Even if he does have good genetics and is good looking in theory, every time I look at him I think, what a smary, pretentious git! I also recently read he doesn't mind taking his shirt off for movies because he knows the fans love it!! (you're right - what new weekly says -goes. Except for the things I don't want to believe. I watched The Woodsman last nite.
Its one of those movies that stays in your mind for a long while after. It haunts you. Its about a convicted child molester who is trying to just survive after his release. Trying to conquer his demons. Its very sad & creepy at the same time. It stars Kevin Bacon at his best.
I believe it is based on a book which would be very good. But I don't think I could deal with the subject matter on a long term basis, such is the relationship with books.

The last thing I saw was a few weeks ago when I saw Marie Anitoinette.
I really enjoyed it but thought the ending was a bit weird! Didn't she get beheaded in real life? In the movie it ended that she and her family were taking off to live in exile and then it just finished.
Thought the modern music against the old fashioned setting was quite cleaver. The cinematography was really good also.
raspberryberet
10-03-2007, 09:47 PM
She was most certainly beheaded. I kind of liked how it left off where it did, otherwise I think it may have all become about the ending (that's what we seem to think of first when we think MA) rather than the social/cultural/every-day stuff.
Soundtrack was great, wasn't it?? And did you see the pair of converse sneakers under the bed? Gotta love Sofia Coppola. Still on shoes, I read today that MA had four pairs of shoes made for her every single week. The French Imelda Marcos!
I saw Hot Fuzz today - same guys who did Shaun of the Dead. It was high-larious.

I thought it was good too, however I think I would have liked it if they even just put in writing on the screen what actually happened to her. I am a big believer in the true story being told. Thought it was very clever and the costumes were wonderful. I love Kirsten Dunst and think she is very talented and also very under rated as an actress.
Part of the reason the kingdom turned on Marie Antoinette was because she was so excessive with her clothing and lifestyle in a time when there was so much poverty and war. She over spent so much that the King was unable to give his normal contribution to charities etc.

Saw another movie today. The Good German with Cate Blanchette and George Clooney. Very good. Now I know why they refer to her as the modern-day Meryl Streep - she puts on a very convincing accent. Set in 1945 after the war, the film is shot in almost fuzzy black and white and uses real footage from the era that blends right in. Very Casablanca style ending!

I was incredibly emotional. You sit there watching a movie except you keep reminding yourself how real it actually was. I found United 93 worse to watch than WTC. I guess because WTC had some sort of hope. United 93 scared the bejeezus out of me. I didnt know there were people so fanatical about religion etc until I saw it. Very chilling. Inspiring though, how the passengers and Cabin Crew tried to defeat them. I know in that situation I would not know what to do with myself.

I saw The Illusionist on Saturday night (that was my hardcore St Patrick's day partying hehe). I wasn't really impressed. The dialog was very scripted and unoriginal. Edward Norton was good, Paul Giamatti (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0316079/) also played his character well. Jessica Biel was so-so. I feel like maybe I had been spoilt by the Prestige, which had a vaguely similar storyline (about magicians...) but was absolutely fantastic (I would rate it one of the best movies I've ever seen).

The Departed is great, huh! Nice to see Matt Damon as the bad guy too. He's never really done it for me but is so typecast.

I never got the appeal of Matt Damon either, until I saw The Bourne Identity -phwoaaarrrr!
I like Sandra too, there's something very normal and non-Botoxy about her. It's not the best movie I ever saw but it's a sweet romantic popcorn flick - fluffy entertainment for an evening of veging out on the couch :bunny:

Fluffy is how I would describe The Lake House! I loved it though, saw it at the movies and had to buy the DVD. Watched it with hubby the other day and he got all weepy!
Love love love the Departed. A remake of a Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. Yep, Leo is looking more manly now, quite cute but give me Matt Damon any day!

I finally watched An Inconvinent Truth on DVD. I have been hanging to see this & it didn't let me down as many hyped up films do. If you have not seen it yet, it is a must see & very important. Make sure you watch the 1/2hr update in the special features too.
I love that it told a very complicated horror story in plain english & finished with an achievable goal. Obviously defeated after pursing govts for so many years Al Gore is winning over the people, the voters & relying on them to make the much needed changes. We can do this. Let's be the generation that saves the world.
I sure hope he runs for president again. Can you imagine America, a world power with a green leader? It would have a profound effect. Maybe then Howard would sign Kyato if the US does!

Isn't it great? Really gets you revved up. I think it's had a lot to do with our govt recently changing its tune from being greenhouse "sceptics" to greenhouse "realists" because it saw the way people reacted. Even still it has got a bloody long way to go and seems so resistant to the idea of renewables, solar and emerging technologies like carbon trading. Perish the thought of upsetting the coal industry.
As much as I hate to say it I'm not sure Howard would ever sign Kyoto. He's invested too much in the "beyond Kyoto" policies and it'd be seen as a serious backdown (and he doesn't do backdown very well). Fingers crossed he'll get booted out later this year though, and we'll get a govt that's serious about the environment, not throwing money at voters and pretending it has always been "green".
Love Al Gore too, he's so charismatic, but my money's on Barack Obama for Prez! :worship:
I knew this would start me on a rant, sorry!

Got Trust the Man and A Good Year out on DVD
A good year was nice...nothing to write home about... just a romantic movie really.

Well I saw it a while ago, but I just re-watched it - "Kenny". If you haven't seen it, PLEASE do yourself a favour and get it out (or watch it on Foxtel Box Office). If you like Australian comedies like "The Castle", you'll love "Kenny". It's a mockumentary about a plumber whose business is port-a-loos. He's the loveliest Aussie guy and it's just about his place in the world. Definitely two thumbs up from me (your boys will love it too)!

I just saw 300 too.
I think Jonothan Coleman's review on Sunrise summed it up nicely, lots of yelling "we are spartans!" all the way thru.
I found it very predictable & americanised, they just love overkill don't they.
David Wenham looked so out of place, the only blond guy in a sea of Greeks?
Sure it looks great but there should have been more story. I know the history & it scimmed sooooo much. I had to explain it to my boy all the way thru.

I just saw The Singer . Margaret and David gave it the thumbs up, but I'm afraid I just can't do the same.
My boredom was only exacerbated with regular intervals of Depardieu singing old love songs. The performances didn't peak and the whole movie felt like the lull of having taken a sedative.(tip: moments of inane boredom can cleverly be spent admiring the lead actress' haircut)
However the goat and horse did put in a fine performance and were most entertaining (and very cute)

girls you HAVE to see Children of Men, and not just becuase it is the most amazing, saddest and unreal film ever - Clive Owen is just soooo delicious!!
This movie is great- and I agree re Clive- he is gorgeous! It is a strange film because it is quite heavily symbolic and appears really depressing/dismal but there is a strange old-fashioned hope to it that are rare in films of this futuristic genre these days.
Saw Babel today. It was pretty harrowing - I had to go home and watch a cartoon.
Sure to win Oscars I reckon.
Babel is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time- my finace and I were crying pretty much the whole way through! It is unrelenless in its intensity and emotion. Fantastic though.
I saw Pan's Labyrinth - eurgh, wouldn't recommend it. Was EXTREMELY violent.
Kate, this one was violent but such an amazing film. Its violence was surprising considering it a film made from a child's perspective and fantasy elements. I found it really interesting that her fantasy world was just a violent as the 'real' world. Its like the only way she could deal with that violence was not to ignore it but to examine it from her own perspective and with her own ideas.

It was probably me who said Babel was overrated Oscar-bait (an opinion proven, I might add, by its dismal performance at the Oscars!). I found that it had no overriding themes and no linking narratives. I found it disjointed, preachy and ultimately pointless! The sad thing is that each of the stories on their own would have been good movies. I would have loved to have seen a whole movie based on the Japanese girl. I thought the movie was very well-acted and the music was great, but the whole wasn't greater than the sum of its parts.

Hmmmmmm, that's interesting. I liked it. I didn't think it was amazing but some of the stories were moving and it had a good script. I don't think it was Oscar bait. In fact for me when a movie doesn't get a win I rejoice! Because I think the Academy is pretty staid and obvious in its choices, and rarely do the best movies (and actors) win. In my humble opinion, anyway.

I am so in love with Babel as a film it's not funny! That soundtrack is so haunting...it gets right under the skin and into the skin and into the heart...I am too scared to watch it again because it moved me too much the first time. I think the different stories are unified in their sense of 'otherness'. To me it is really about trying to fit in and not fitting in, and fitting in one country/environment, but not in another. The raw pain and emotion in this film- the amazing performances of all the actors really did something to me.

I loved Crash too, it was ridiculously powerful. I first saw it on an illegal (naughty I know) pirated version I got in Bali, before it had even been released at the movies here. It was really annoying because of course as soon as I watched it I wanted to call everyone I knew and go "Have you seen that movie Crash, it's soooooo good!!", but no-one had seen or even heard of it. So I had to force the DVD upon them!
The part where you think the little girl has been shot almost makes me burst into tears just thinking about it!! I always cry when I see it, I think because it's a release of all this pent-up emotion you feel when watching the movie (rage, sadness, love).

Sapphire I feel the same way about the movie Crash (not the scary James Spader one, the one filmed a little while back). For me it gelled a bit better than Babel, but I do still like the latter.
It was great when Crash got Best Picture that year, nobody predicted it. So moving. I couldn't talk to my friend for about half an hour after we came out of the movies!
I loved Crash also. ( Don Cheadle/Matt Dillon/Sandra Bullock ). Although this movie has been aligned with Babel I see them differently. I was moved for hours after the movie.
Sapphire

Interesting...I love Crash too but for me the connections were more obvious than in Babel. But like I said re Babel, the messages in Crash were much needed for a general western audience. My sister for example does not watch so-called 'arthouse' films but was drawn to Crash and found the content more accessible.
Sapphire
05-05-2007, 01:52 AM
I almost forgot- in Crash, that scene where the policeman sexually assaults the woman while her husband has to watch without moving...that really got to me. His feelings of pain and guilt at not 'saving' her, and her own pain, 'shame' and need to have him help her. Powerful stuff.

I have not been to the movies in a while, but I saw Jindabyne on DVD the other night. It is one of those films that grows on you. It is slow-paced but so mysterious, so beautifully filmed, and so atmospheric. I really loved it- I was thinking about it for days afterwards. Has anyone else seen this?
Sapphire, although this was a well made film, I couldnt help comparing it to how I felt after watching Lantana. I did think the latter was better. I also loved Babel and Crash but feel I need another viewing.

07-05-2007, 11:25 AM
I didn't notice the plot holes as much as the bad editing. They could have cut an hour's worth of stuff out of that movie without losing anything. The scene where Cameron Diaz turns the car around and runs back to Jude Law - it takes her at least three minutes to get from the car to the house! She opens three gates! And stops to catch her breath!

Yes! And she barely cried at all. Pffft. The awards night for Arthur was underdone, and why didn't Kate/Cameron speak more often? I would like to have seen more of a relationship between them. Otherwise it was just two movies intertwined. I could sooo write a romantic comedy... :sunnies:

Just came home from seeing Georgia Rule with Jane Fonda, Felicity Huffman and Lindsay Lohan. For a movie released just yesterday the cinema was empty. Just dont know what to make of it, wanted to like it but the subject matter of paedophilia in a "light hearted" movie was a bit disturbing.
Oggle factor high though, a gorgeous (if grey-haired) Dermot Mulroney in it!

We saw 28 Weeks Later today. Here's me throughout: :shockedhair:
Pretty good but double the gore and double the blood. Not really my bag baby. What I liked about the first one was how gritty and stripped-back it was. Don't know if I can use the word subtle for a zombie-like horror flick, but you know what I mean! The sequel was a bit more full-on. And no Cillian Murphy *sniff*

Hear you Jaime. You're right, it was definitely enjoyable but a fair bit tamer than the book. Andy was supposed be completely tortured! And I loved poring over all the clothing descriptions, the big fashion wardrobe etc...was hoping it would translate a bit better to screen.

I went and saw Georgia Rule on Sunday with a friend. I used my free double pass courtesy of Adore Beauty. The film starred Jane Fonda, Felicity Huffman and Lindsay Lohan. All I will say is that I am so glad I didn't take my seven year old god daughter (lindsay lohan fan). I also CANNOT and REFUSE to watch any kind of "animal adventure" movies. I get too sad and actually find them distressing. I hate hate hate hate hate movies like Milo and Otis, Babe, Homeward Bound etc. Even animated movies like The Rescuers and Lady and the Tramp, I hate!
