View Full Version : Does anybody do conditioner only washing?

Hi,

I have only just started doing this again after a long break where I felt I should use shampoo and conditioner, (dam those ads!) I then realised that my hair really can't cope with shampoo too well. :shakehead: I do have to wash my hair everyday as its very fine and to be frank, I look damm scary when I wake up in the morning and MUST wash my hair to get it to look human! :chuckle: so I have decided to go back to conditioner only washing.
The basics are:
Wet your hair,(hair should be free of silicones, just make sure you clarify before the first time you do it)
Apply good amount of silicone free conditioner,
Massage it around just like you do when you shampoo,
leave it on to finish its work while you do all the other stuff in the shower,
Rinse, rinse and rinse.
Conditioners have a very gentle surfactant in them called ceteryl alcohol (sounds nasty but its actually pretty moisturising)
Some people report that you can go longer between washings as after a while your scalp realises that it is not getting stripped by shampoo so your hair does not get greasy so quickly, and of course you keep all that lovely moisture in the ends where its needed.
Its a thing I picked up through reading forums for people with curly hair, mine is more wavy than curly but it helped me enormously, I only went off it for a while when I fell under the spell of the ads! :shakehead:
If anyone wants more info on how to do it, which conditioners to use etc, let me know!

What conditioner are using now Gilly?

Gilly

I am using (don't laugh!) Aldi 5 stars family conditioner, its great for it as its nice and thin and silicone free, oh also only cost $2 for a litre!!
I find I can use any that is cone free but usually end up with 5 stars or Pears as they are also cone free but you need the "normal or clarifying" ones, the trick is to pick ones that are NOT volumising.
Have you tried it before emmy?

emmy

No, I don't think I want to either :redcheeks: I was just curious as to what conditioner you are using!
I couldn't live without my shampoo :hugs:

I was worried about my hair not feeling "clean" but if its done right it does a great job!
I am a hair washing fanatic but it was killing my hair and now I am trying to grow it, I know I have got to take more care of it.
I love the fact that it brings out my waves and it looks healthy rather than a bit parched no matter what I tried to do with it!

I must use shampoo - my shampoo's I use are pretty gentle in comparison to some. I'm actually going to use Alchemy lemongrass shampoo and jojoba light conditioner - I've bought the small size to start when I move, but after that Im quite keen to try beauty and bees shampoo bar and apple cider rinse.

If conditioning only works for you and your hair is in top condition go for it. I noticed when I went away on a boat and didn't wash my hair at all and swam everyday and made sure I just regularly combed/brushed it it coped fine. My scalp was in great condition - I realised then that for me overloading it with product was no good. Keep it simple.

That was interesting, I would have loved to read the Marie Claire article, I wonder if these people were genuinly NOT washing as in not wetting at all or were they using conditioner to "wash" with? As I said before, there is a very mild surfactant in the conditioner so it will "clean" your hair.
I will still be doing my hair everyday as I personally like the feeling of water through my hair, makes me feel much better!:chuckle:

That is very true Alice - I use natural products where I can - shampoo and conditioner - thats it! I don't use styling products or leave in's anymore.

I have just done mine, I actually used Pears conditioner as it was in the shower :shakehead:
My hair was squeaky clean and is now feeling pretty happy.
As you have said, its each to their own here, if it works great, if not no problem.
Its worth a try, and I just thought it would be good to be aware this can be done.

Its basically the fact that most shampoo's strip the hair way too much, and it can make the hair dry and more prone to damage and of course colours fade quicker.
Using just conditioner to "wash" with preserves the moisture while still cleaning the hair and again colours last longer, I know if I was colouring my hair I would want it to last as long as possible.

I hope that makes it a bit clearer! :hugs:

I have tried them all and while they work well for a while I always notice that I am having to use heavier conditioners to combat the dryness.

Correct me if i'm wrong but i think that if your not using a shampoo you may aswell not be using anything because the conditioner can't get into the hair follicle and do is job.

Shampoo opens up the follicle so the conditioner can get in and work and then close the follicle.

So you need to purchase an extra gentle shampoo so it doesn't strip your hair and dry it out.

Yeah I agree PP, if that is the effect, it is probably the incorrect shampoo being used.

Cone-free, cheap conditioners have smaller amounts of cleansers than shampoo, therefore you're still opening the cuticles, but not as much. Just enough to get in there and do a gentle cleanse. You can follow up with a rich conditioner to smooth the cuticles.

There are so many washing methods out there, you just have to find the right one for you. Some people use a shampoo bar followed by a vinegar rinse, others do CWC (condition the length, wash the scalp, rinse, condition all over). It took me awhile to get my head around them all and I still get confused.

There is a scary amount of different ways to wash your hair apart from the "normal" way, I would never have even thought about ditching shampoo before reading all the great info on LHC, most is cross referenced so its pretty well tried and tested. :typing:
I used to use anything on my hair from cheap supermarket brands to really high end stuff to try and sort out my dry parched hair but all I needed to do was clarify occasionally to get the gunk that had built up on my hair off then the stuff would work again!
Now I am open to trying any method that will work! :clapping:

I'm a lather rinse repeat girl and then a clarifying shampoo every so often and a treatment 1-2 times a week depending on time and my hair condition

Most of the ranges do a clarifying one, I used to use Pantene's one, it stripped everything off :chuckle:

Which conditioner are you going to use? Let me know as it can be a bit of a minefield finding the right one!
Check the ingredients for anything ending in "cone", any of those in there will make me walk away from it! :chuckle:
I have a list that I got from LHC which listed all the different types of silicones, it was amazing, all these things that are hard to pronounce :chuckle:

i think u r meant to use a cheapie for the wash portion & then u can use a better conditioner for the condition bit , but remember it will take a bit to get your hair used to the change just like when u cut down the frequency of washing

If you don't have a problem with going through a tube a bit quicker then go for it!

If you try it don't forget to treat it like a shampoo, give it a reall good working in then leave it until the end of your shower before you rinse it really well.

I don't dare try to do a wash with Terax, I know I'm going to like it too much!! :shakehead:

Is just Pears normal for me today, my hair is squeaky clean, I have run out now though so will have to move on to Inecto coconut conditioner, maybe I could use up my last bit of Terax though

Let us know how it goes won't you VeeE!

Okay just to get this clear... I bought some Clarifying 'poo on my lunch break. Now- How often should I clarify? Once a week? Once every 2 weeks? Also, when I am using the conditioner only do I use more than I normally would? How much should I be using for slightly shorter than shoulder length hair?
If I use hairsrpay (not much) will the conditioner be sufficient?

Sorry about all the q's but I want to get it right?

Hi VeeE
You only really need to clarify when you feel like it, if you are not using silicones or other products you should not have a build up problem, I plan on doing it if my hair stops feeling nice, a quick shampoo and all is well again but you have saved yourself all the drying effects of shampooing so once in a while won't hurt!
Regarding the hairspray, it should brush out easy enough, I usually put a bit on my fringe and it copes with that fine!
What conditioner are you going to use?
When are you going to do it?
Any more questions just ask away! :hugs:

Some people who have seriously dry hair problems sometimes like to use a richer (silicone free) conditioner AFTER they have "washed" with the cheaper thinner conditioner, it gives an extra hit of moisture, thats what I am going to do tomorrow :glee:

VeeE
09-05-2008, 05:52 PM
Would Terax alone be okay?

Gilly
09-05-2008, 06:21 PM
I did post an answer but I think it got eaten! :chuckle:

Personally I would not use the Terax to "wash" with as its very rich and pretty thick, most people myself included, use a really cheapo runny conditioner to "wash" with then put on a richer one like Terax if they feel their hair needs the extra moisture.

I am just too mean to use Terax all the time :chuckle:, I am going to order another tube of it soon as I really do love it but it will only be as a "final" conditioner.

Do you have any other cone free conditioners you could try?

Well, in the intrests of research  I tried the Sukin conditioner for "washing" with, it is quite a bit thicker than the normal types I have been using so I found I had to use roughly double the amount I normally use (my hair is just touching the bottom of my neck/ top of back) I did the usual massage, left it on for the rest of my shower then rinsed and massaged some more, I did have to massage a bit longer to make sure I got it all out as if I leave any on my scalp I itch!!

Fusspot, I would not worry about your fine hair, mine is so fine its not funny but as long as I don't use a conditoner that is too thick I don't have a problem with it, some people even report having more bounce and body once they have gone over to this type of washing.

I think the "squeak" is a good indicator of your hair being clean, I find it satisfying to get a squeak when I use something to clean my hair that most hairdressers say won't work :chuckle:

I just started conditioner-only washing a couple of weeks ago :)
The first few times did not work too well because I was using Kevin Murphy products. I LOVE his styling products, esp. Hair Resort, but his treatment products are not as good and left my hair very dry and tangled.
His 'Luxury' conditioner did nothing to condition my hair, so I reverted back to Pantene (I know it's bad!!), with the KM Luxury Leave-in conditioner, KM Body Guard, Kerastase Oleo Relax Serum and Terax Life Drops (which I got in a sample, and made my hair amazingly soft and smooth so I am definitely going to purchase).
I don't know about the effects so far because I have either been using styling products (KM Hair Resort & Easy Rider), blowdrying or straightening. I have to say that my hair definitely hasn't suffered from not shampooing.
I will keep everyone updated on the results :)

I always get the same reaction too! I find though once I explain about the mild surfactant they do understand it a bit more but I still think they are disapointed that they won't be able to sell you shampoo :chuckle:

I also hate the fact that whenever I have asked a hairdresser for a silicone free conditioner they always hand me one that is full of the stuff! Don't they read labels? :shakehead: surely if I can recognise them a professional should know what to look for!:explode:

Sorry, I'll get off my high horse now :chuckle:

:hugs:I know I've been told this soooo many times but I never remember, what's so bad with the silicone hair products again?

Silicones are great at making hair lovely and smooth but they do tend to "seal" the hair so unless you get it all off, you hair can't actually grab any moisture so it gets dryer and dryer, this is what happened to my hair before I learnt about them, I would just keep looking for more intensive conditioners and deep treatments to sort out the dryness when all I really needed to do was to clarify to get all the gunk off! :redcheeks:

They also can mask damage so if you have been using then for a long time, (like I was) then stop and get rid of them, you may find that your hair looks worse! But its just the fact that the hair is not coated anymore.

I hope this explains things a bit better

You do realise that you CAN still shampoo if you want don't you? :redcheeks:

Its perfectly ok if you just want to cut down on the shampoo, just do the conditioner wash inbetween, that way you will still give your hair a break from normal shampoo on the days you just use conditoner.

There are no hard and fast rules for washing your hair, just do what works best for you and your hair.

I am probably going to shampoo every 7-10 days as I "wash" everyday so this is really giving my hair a break, which it seems to be liking.:clapping:

That is great news about your nec VeeE, :champagne: just shows that your shampoo was too harsh for your skin in that area.

There is a lot of people who NEVER use shampoo and do this method all the time and there are some who occasionally use shampoo, it really is a question of what works best for you.

I figure that life is too short to beat yourself up over silly things like "am I doing this the right way" so I just do what works :glee: its just nice to be aware of alternatives that preserve colour or make your hair less dry etc :champagne:

THe Oleo Serum is great stuff, I use it everytime I wash.

I use the Bain Satin range and the Age Recharge deep conditioning masque, whenever my hair gets a bit stressed and starts falling out this sorts it out.

loolabelle
18-05-2008, 09:51 PM
THis is lovely - it comes in 2 types - one is designed for more coarser type hairm the other just "normal" - unlike ALOT of serums I have tried - this doesn't leave any residue or greasiness or weigh it down.

I use this when my hair is wet AND dry - what I do is after I've washed my hair about a 10c piece of it and work it through. I also use the Chroma Reflect leave in and Ciment Thermique with this and mox it and apply it at once (I only use a small line of each). The effect of using it whilst it's wet really helps with frizzy and a silkiness and shine whether its straight, wavy or curly, but even more so when it's straight as this naturally look shiner anyway and this gives it a real "just walked out of a salon" look when you're at home.

When my hair is dry and styled I will fininsh with the teenist amount of the Oleo again over my hair, starting from the bottoms, I also have Kerastase cream that is nice to finish off.

Don't worry too much :hugs: If you have been using shampoos and conditioners etc with silicones in this may be the reason. If you have clarified and gone onto "washing" with a silicone free conditioner, you are now seeing the "real" condition of your hair as you will have got rid of all the silicone coating from your hair, just do some deep treatments but make sure the products DON'T have any silicones as they will just coat it again, I was told by a hairdresser that sometimes it can take weeks to get rid of long term silicone use, that's a bit scary!! :chuckle:
I read the ingredients of everything I put on my hair, sometimes it takes me ages before I pick one!! :chuckle:

Pears is really good, cheap and easy to find, make sure you get the one for normal hair or the clarifying one, you don't want anything that is for extra body or volume!
