Hey guys, :waving:

Im getting sick of geling + waxing my hair.. So i just wet my hair and spray some hairspray onto it... But my current one im using i find it pretty crap to be honest. It totally dries out my hair and basically does nothing.. So im looking for an alternative that doesn't dry out my hair and make it oily.. and keeping my hair nice and shiny.

thanks guys

What sort of style & finish do you want to achieve HM?
Hairsprays tend to be better for locking a look into place, so they do tend to have a crunchy finish.

umm i just want a normal looking style after the finish.. like when your out of the shower or washing your hair it looks normal? i just don't want it overdone.

Cruncy finish do you mean like hard rock and dry looking?

OK so gender is key. We are pretty much all girls here and we mostly use hairspray to set ponytails etc. Guy's hair is different. I don't think hairspray is the way to go. Waxes and moulding pastes would do the job.
The trick is in the application. Too many guys use WAY too much product for the amount of hair they have. It ends up looking overdone and greasy. You want to use a pea size amount of product then rub it into your hands well before pulling it thru the ends of your hair. If you apply product too close to your scalp it will become greasy quickly. Apply to the very ends to define and reduce a fluffy look.
Go to a big store like Hair Warehouse or Price Attack and ask for product advice. They are generally very helpful.
Moose and American Crew do some great products aimed at guys.

wow i didn't know that.. applying too much etc.. and applying it through to your scalp.. thanks for your reply..

so your saying when using wax or gel apply it to the ends of the hair? don't go to close to the scalp of the head?

Yes. In doing so the ends of your hair will look more defined & less fluffy and you hair will stay cleaner longer. These products effectively grease up your hair to give it definition. There is no need to put them close to your skin. If you go to a store (as mentioned above) with clean hair and tell them what you are after, ask them to try some product in your hair and watch closely how they apply it. Often near the counter they will sell mini versions of products that are a great way to sample nd find the best for you. I have also seen mini tubs of hair product in Priceline. I buy these for travel, they are really cheap like $2.

Ooh - great thread. I tend to tie my hair back a lot, but I have thick wavy hair which has a mind of its own & most of the time, I just can't get it to stay in its place. It's the root area which just loosens up and goes all over the place (no matter how tight I tie it), so I tend to use hairspray over that area to try and set it. But by the sounds of it, I should be using a wax or something. But I'd need something that isn't greasy, because I have an oily scalp. And definitely something that smells nice too!

My hair doesn't get greasy when it is dirty so when I want to pull it all back I get all these fluffies :shakehead: I need to grease it up a bit with some product to smooth them down. I usually run some thru the top of my hair (not into the scalp) and then brush it into a ponytail. I'll finish with hairspray to set.
I've been using TBS Coconut Hair Shine (in the tin). I love the smell.

I'll tell you what else is good if you have kids. Wild Child Head Lice Defence Styling Mud. It is a lice repellant but also does an excellent job of keeping my daughter's hair up. She has fine hair that falls out the minute you tie it up. It brushes out really well without making her hair dirty too. Highly rec this. Has a caramel scent. ;)

I got it in the chemist but I think Priceline stock too? It was only about $12 I think, not much and you only need a teeny bit. Boys would love it, has a matt finish.

I have tried all sorts of gels, waxes and pomades bluemelon for this very thing. All workded ok but the nicest result (ie nice smell and easy to wash out) was the newish Loreal gloss in the pink bottle.

I love Tigi hairspray. It smells like strawberries to me. It is exxy for the smallish can you get though.

I don't think you can go past good old Goldwell for hairspary. I get the huge bacl tin one and it lasts me a year or more.

HM, that's a tricky one as most gels and pomades are designed to make the hair "piecey" as in stuck together. I would also avoid any gel that says "wet look". I am not a mousse user so cant help there. What about a shine serum that you could use after your hair is dry? They dont provide styling properties but are designed to be used after you have styled your hair. Careful as too much can make your hair look greasy.

If you are wanting some good adivce, Hairhouse Warehous employs hairdressers to advise.

yeah no problemm.. and thanks for adding me to your buddy list :)

umm, yeah just a shine thing would do after my hair is dry.. what about giving volume? would that be the same deal also? cause i don't want hair straight flat.. bits a of hair sticking up but not extreme.

hairhouse warehouse, i will visit that sometime depending location.

The shine products are not known for giving volume and be careful as too much product can make your hair flat. Do seek out Hairhouse or even Price Attack or Petra Haircare. They are in most shopping centres. Get them to show you a few products and then make your decision based on your needs. Good luck.:waving:

HM, my boy uses the American Crew products and he swears by them. You can get them here on adore too, but I think hairhouse warehouse stocks it, otherwise try a mens salon.
He uses the "Forming cream" or the "Tee tree defining cream". Only use the tiniest amount though otherwise it will go all goopy and horrible. The forming cream gives it a shine too. Neither of these are hairsprays though, but rather a cream based styling product, much better for guys hair. Just don't use too much or I'll have to hunt you down!! :chuckle:

Just one OR the other. One he uses when hes hair is getting a bit longer, basically as hes due for his next cut. But i can't remember which one, I'll ask him. They both do the same thing though in my opinion

Hairhouse Warehouse do cuts. Not sure how good they are - depends on the cutter I guess. I would go to a salon myself but it all comes down to personal preference.
