View Full Version : Straightening vs Blow drying

I was just wondering, is it less damaging to straighten hair using a hair straightener or a blow drier?
I have a GHD and my hair is straightened pretty much all the time. However is is very damaged. I also find that on the odd occasion that I blow dry it straight it is has more volume (which I like) as a pose to being flat and straight, but really when it comes down to it, I want to do whatever to do the least damage.
I really don't know!! I would assume blow dryng would be less damaging as it's not as hot as a straightener.

they are both just as damaging. If you want your hair to repair you should stop both for a while.
And make sure you get regular trims!

Hi midifile :waving: I think you really need to give them both a rest if your hair is that stresed and invest in some good deep conditioning treatments.I know its hard when you're so used to doing it everyday but your poor hair will look better in the long run.

You should be using something before you straighten too, to protect your hair.. Like an oil or something

A straightener is hotter than a hairdryer but when you blowdry you are stretching the hair so really they are both bad for your hair.
The only solution is to give your hair a break. Go natural where you can and do regular treatments.
Yeah, I would never stop straightening...

Nothing like a good trim, treatment and break!

Do you use a protective heat treatment midifile? I find they really help, I started using a GHD a couple of months ago and noticed the damage after just a few weeks, so have since been using Kevin Murphy Body Guard and it seems to be helping a lot.

I blow dry AND straighten my hair, and if it's not straight, it's wavy for which I use a curling wand for. I don't use these every day though, I use good quality products (and the right ones) and I don't think my hair looks damaged at all. I don't think I could ever give it up.

Straightening should be reserved for once a week/ special occasions. Yeah try telling that to my teenage girl whose hair need not a cut as it breaks off instead!!!
I find if I let my hair dry by itself and only stretch/blowdry out when it is almost dry my hair feels soft and silky, but nothing compares to regular trims to get rid of the dry ends and an excellent condtioner.Matrix sleek look range or Biolage works wonders also.Extreme Liss by L'Oreal is a good serum also.
I tend not use the straighteners very often as I don't suit the poker straight look. Blowdrying my hair looks and feels much better than straighteners.
I'm the same as Loola - blowdry and straighten my hair. Not everyday - about 3/4 times a week. My hair isn't damaged at all!

If i go the salon my bestie blowdries and then straightens but if i know i'm going out i always wash myhair in the morning and let it dry naturally and then straighten my hair before i go out.
My hair is damaged at the moment but thats only because i've been waiting for my bestie to get her products in her new salon.

Me either, just got to get the right products, of course you hair will look like crap if you dont protect it. I use a mixture of Joico & Redken products to protect from heat damage and a redken treatment once a week, my HD always says how good my hairs looking, how soft & healthy it is etc :glee:

Same PS! And if I think it's looking a bit blah, they still comment what great condition it is in! Having a good, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle are huge factors as well I feel.

haha, exactly! I got that when I got my hair cut 2 weeks ago - I though it looked dull and unhealthy and had been falling out, and she was dropping random comments how "I wouldn' t have to worry as I have such healthy and full hair" etc. I was like "Say what?!"

I have no idea - I really started to freak out - as I malt badly anyway, but I noticed the amount had tripled and my hair was feeling not like itself! Have never had this except when I was really sick 5 years ago.

Hmmm...I don't currently use a heat protective product  I know it's bad, but all I do is shampoo, condition (currently using a mixture of Natural Instinct and KMS that PCC gave me). Then I use Terax maybe twice a week. That's it! My hair is in good condition, silky, smooth, free of split ends. I think maybe because it is so short, as I grow it out will have to find a good protective product.

I use Kerastase products afterwards and have gone back to using the Bain Satin and Lait Protein. I also include a bit of Mac and Wheat and Terax each time I wash my hair (maybe 3 times a week I wash it)
I eat a diat of omega 3's and antioxidant rich, and with seeds and a variety of frutis and vegies and not the same ones over and over. I also avoid tying it back where I can.

Yea being short does make it a LOT healthier but do be careful when you are growing it, long manky hair not a good look...not that your will be! :shakehead: :chuckle:

I straighten my whole hair with my GHD but do protect with the GHD hair iron oil spray or with a puple bottle spray by lee stafford on rare occasions - like maybe once a fortnight, I do my long fringe and top layers probably once to twice a week when I want it to be a bit more glam- then I wear it like that smooth look for 2 maybe 3 days - my HD advised I do just the the front and top layers only to save my hair from damaging too much.
I find blowdrying makes it frizzy and puffy, want to get an ionic hairdryer - anyone have one what do you think of them, any difference at all?

Krissy the difference with my Ionic hairdryer is amazing. When I used a plain normal one I had frizzies all over, no matter what product I used. Now its always sleek and smooth. I use a Parlux. I highly recommend it.
