View Full Version : Musical Instruments
Lately I am thinking of getting back into my violin playing - I learnt to play when I was younger for about 6 years. I will have to re-purchase a violin and find a good teacher, which I am excited about, but it can become expensive! :glee:
It got me thinking - any Adoreables out there - have you or do you currently play an instrument? Tell me a little about it :hugs:

Oooh cool thread! I played the violin for 15 years, although the last 3 I was tutoring young kids in a youth orchestra so not exactly furthering my own development. I still have my violin and pull it out ocassionally and have a bit of a play, but I get really frustrated because I have forgotten so much. Mum's boss plays in a Scottish fiddle group and has invited me to come along one night and I am pretty tempted. I learnt classically, not folk, but still I wouldn't mind having a go.
Emmy maybe you would want to come too? We live nearby I think!
Wow Celeste - 15 years is amazing! I must admit I am absolutely terrible now - I have forgotten everything, all the notes, I would have to learn everything over again.
Scottish Fiddle group sounds cool Celeste! :worship: When you go along, will you have to play or can you just watch? I think I would have to have many lessons before I could join in :chuckle: Whereabouts is it/how often?

Oh Emmy I am crap too. Trust me. It's amazing how fast the ability deteriorates!
I imagine you could join in or just watch, and I understand there is a really broad range of abilities represented so it's okay to tinker along as you can. The people do it for pleasure, not to be amazing, so it's a very welcoming group and having a go is encouraged.
At least - that's what Mum's told me! I don't know when/where or the frequency (although I think it's monthly). I am seeing Mum tonight so I'll ask her and get her to find out more info and I'll let you know!

Wow guys, so talented! Violin is such a beautiful instrument, you should definitely take it back up! :worship:
I'm hopeless on this front. I have a very musical family so when I was younger I attempted to learn piano, guitar, trumpet and saxophone. Not good. In fact - very, very bad.

Very true - after 5 or so years I have forgotten absolutely everything! That'd be great if you could find out details :clapping:

You are too funny. I love the cello - so gorgeous - but so annoying to lug around. Although my sister played the double bass and THAT is big. She used to have to pay an extra train/tram fare to take it around.

I do. Well - my parents are terrible but love music so they encouraged us. My big sister (who plays the double bass) is wonderful. She also plays the piano and guitar really, really well and has a gorgeous singing voice. In fact she can pick up anything and play it pretty well, pretty quickly. I am in the middle, and my little sister learnt the viola but she was the worst :chuckle:

Mum doesn't go, her boss does, and she was telling Mum about it to see if I would like to join in as Mum must have mentioned she wished I played more often still.

I used to play the oboe, the clarinet, and the recorder (not the tinny plastic one that we all played in primary school - the big wooden one).

I always wanted to learn the drums but I am too unco. I also wanted to learn the sax (but for different reasons Brandon :chuckle:) but my parents said I had to learn the clarinet first, to learn how to blow into it or something, but I wasn't interested in the clarinet!

ha ha. . the sax has appeal. . of course an extremely loud and rudely coloured hawaiian shirt MUST be worn with it at all times!! ha ha

When I was learning sax my dad got me a double cassette of songs with sax solos in them - Baker Street and the like. They just don't make 'em like that any more.

Yep the drums!

He taught me theory and then practical. then when i moved schools i had to stop lessons, but i practiced and practiced. . and when i started getting paid to play i practiced more!! i still do. . are you thinking about getting lessons?

not at the moment. im enjoying a self imposed "holiday" and everyone loves to be on holiday!! :) im enjoying spending time with good freinds and learning to enjoy music again! Just creating from random ideas and not having the pressure that comes along with alot of it. So yeah, just hanging out in the studio catching up with mates! Which is always fun! but after such a long winded response. . No, not at the moment. :)

I learned piano all through school. I have the most beautiful white baby grand piano that my parents bought me for my 21st birthday. It diesn't get used often anymore but it makes a fabulous feature in my formal lounge!:chuckle:

my mum is a piano teacher so I grew up playing the piano, and took a few exams. I wasn't passionate about it though so I quit.
Would love to get back into it, but mum is the one with the piano so I'd have no practice time
I have played a million instruments- I have a fascinating with them  I have played in chronological order :chuckle::
Piano
Flute
Violin
Drums
Singing (hey! they say it's an instrument!)
I would like to learn the piano again. I love the sound of piano.

I love this thread, so funny, we're so geeky.
I played the violin, the clarinet and the piano. But all I ever wanted to do was act, sing, and dance.
My childhood was a bit of a chance for mum to give me the opportunities she never had, which absolutely sucked because what she wanted did not suit my personality. My Mum has a PhD in Information Management and my Dad has a PhD in Maths Education. Thus for year 12 I did Maths A, Maths B, Physics, Chemistry and English, despite having NO passion for these subjects whatsoever... :shakehead:
I do love music, and I love having the musical knowledge I gained from these instruments, it just would have been amazing and lovely to have been able to express myself through singing and dancing.

I played the flute at school, and now i can't stand the sound of it! I was ok at it but my dancing/ballet took up most of my time, that was my love.... so wish I kept with it.
Now I am just content to listen to the boy when he strums away on one of his guitars..... awesome

Me either... I tried the drums and flute when I was at school but never went far with either. I still wish I had some musical talent tho...

I tried drums, (too unco) piano (just wasn't working) flute (bwahahahahaha) and guitar. It just wsn't meant to be. Mr12 plays guitar, and has attempted to teach me nursery rhymes (he is self taught so far) and it's just not happening.
To quote himself 'I'm sorry Mum, but you really are not musical. You just......... aren't. Everyone can play this, but you just can't do it. What is wrong with you woman?!' - the last bit is delivered in an exaggerated exasperated style (think Stewie from Family Guy telling Lois off).

Ok Emmy....
Scottish Fiddle Club is on the third Sunday of each month - check out www.melbournescottishfiddlers.com for more info. It goes for 3 hours which is a bit off-putting for me but maybe we could go to the next one and just see? If it is fun the length wouldn't be a deterrent...

I don't know if I can go Celeste :shakehead: That's ages away and for so long, it'd equal an entire day as I am moving down to the Mornington Peninsula next weekend.
Are you still going to go? :hugs:

Yeah I'll probably go and check it out. There are probably other local groups near the Mornington Peninsula so if you're interested, you should follow it up and see what you can find.
