I really felt great reading that until I got to the sentence "Most guys would prefer more boob to thinner thighs"! What a horrible sentence to read if, like me, you've got sad, deflated looking booberinas!

Screw what men want,
What I want: For my body size not to be a priority to anyone but myself.

I agree with what Julie Thomson said in this article;

"It objectifies women and still perpetuates this ideal that men do look at women externally only"

If men are continually bombarded with surveys like this they may begin or even continue to look at women as sexual objects only!! I think when looking for a partner men often dismiss certain women just because of the way they look...whatever happened to getting to know someone and seeing the inner beauty? :explode:

emmy
07-04-2008, 03:30 PM
I already knew men think this way! My boy's been drumming it into me for years! I however, still find myself not thin enough, as it is myself and other women I compare and rate my body on, not what my bf's perception or other mens perceptions of me think.

With the sizing these days of clothing its so hard toeven know what size you are! I need to lose weight but this is for health reasons, not because I think I'm fat, which I know I'm not (depiste having stacked on a bit of weight)

Different sizing in different shops makes me feel depressed :(

jaime

it really does hey! If I try something on in a shop and the sizing is clearly smaller than average, I will refuse to go a size larger. Its a psychological thing

My friends often have gorgeous clothes they've found in Asian shops and I will say 'Oh I love your top!' - and they will say 'yeah 8 bucks, bought it in Brunswick at the Asian store on...'

It kills me. A little piece of me dies everytime - I know I would not even fit into an XXXXXL at one of those shops!

I know how you feel about the jeans Jaime - a few years ago (when I was a size 6/8), I tried on some Calvin Klein jeans & I couldn't get my legs in the size 10 equivalent. So I went up a size - still couldn't do it. I even went back after I had a really bad strain of the flu & lost over 5 kilos - nope, still no luck! Now, I reckon I'd be lucky if I could get it any further past my shin! :chuckle:

Great article though. I feel a bit better now. I'm so conscious about my weight & it's not helped when people make comments about it. I'm not overweight for my height, but it's just how the weight is concentrated in one or 2 areas. I need to lose weight too for health reasons like Loola, but my actual reason for weight gain was because of health problems, so I'm in a bit of a loop with that. I have been on a low GI diet for 3 years now (hardly any sugar) & I don't eat any sweet or fatty food at all. And again, the diet thing is not for body image reasons, but for my own personal health - I think that should be the only thing that's important.

loolabelle
07-04-2008, 05:25 PM
Blue - I hear you EXACTLY!

I gained a lot of weight then droppe da lot from health problems - my recent weight gain has been from a medication and putting on my jeans would cause me tears as until then Icouldn't work out why I was putting on weight. I would be totlaly happy to be the size I am now (minus the current extra weight) but overall I need to lose 5-7 kilos.

jaime

in my course we had this 'ideal bodyweight' calculation thingy. It told me I was 10kg overweight!! :shockedhair: There is no way I could be 10kg lighter - I'd be way too skinny!

bluemelon
07-04-2008, 05:40 PM
Gee, 10kg is a lot of weight to lose. I reckon anything over 5kg should be done under the supervision of a health professional. And no more than 1kg a week weight loss is the safest and healthiest I reckon. It is definitely hard work. The funny thing is - those who are more overweight actually lose weight easier. When I first went to my dietician, I was losing a kilo a week - no problems. Then after I'd lost about 3 or 4kg - it got much harder & I was only losing about half a kilo a week or less. But she said that's what happens.

half a kilo is almost ideal to lose - slow and steady wins the race!

Now that I am off the fat causing medication and can start working out again, I hoep to have lost it in about 2-3 months.

jaime
07-04-2008, 05:42 PM
that's true. The more weight you have to lose, the quicker the first lot will come off. Its when you hit that plateau you need to change things up a bit and get your body burning more calories.

jaime

I want to see the pics that those guys were shown in the survey. I'll bet the bigger girls had ample boobies. If I put on weight it all goes to my bum, I would still be flat chested. As I am short I need to keep my weight down, I can't carry it as my taller friends do. Even just a couple of kilos is very noticable on me.

The other thing that really irks me (and upsets me) is how so many people assume that you've gained weight because of eating too much, or eating too much junk food. Everyone assumes that about me all the time. You don't just go from a size 6/8 to a size 12 within 3 months, when your diet is the same & your amount of physical activity is the same!

I'm upset that I can't fit into my Armani Exchange jeans that I got 4 years ago from the Crown Complex :( They're my favourite pair of jeans of all time - they fit so perfect, lengthwise as well. They didn't even need shortening like they always do!

Different sizing in different shops makes me feel depressed :(

This is crap and makes you feel really fat and frumpy a lot of the time. I bought two shirts last week. 1- a Sportscraft size 12 and the other a Perri Cutten size 18. How can two brands be sooooo different in their sizing. My boobs are 109cm. How can a size 12 possibly go around them???? But it did (feeling good at this point), next, Perri Cutten & size 18 (feeling fat) , then to the Trent Nathan section - doesn't even come close (Hate Trent Nathan)! Oh and went to Maggie T and her size 12 would have fitted me and the rest of the adorables all at the same time......grrrrr

I think the fashion industry should get real!

I torture myself over not being thin, not being pretty, not being healthy etc but in the end all it does is emotionally exaust me. I think that we all have to concentrate on being our best selves and forget about living up to everyone elses standards and just try to be happy and do what makes us feel comfortable with ourselves.

Every single person in special and worthwhile in their own way and instead of picking on ourselves for what we are not we should embrace what we are.

Toastie
07-04-2008, 10:29 PM
I agree, pcc. I actually stopped reading magazines because all that airbrushing is just getting ridiculous! If you keep comparing yourself to other people you'll never be happy. The way I've overcome this is by being utterly individual, so that I don't feel that I'm in the same 'league' as anybody else therefor there is nobody else to compare myself to anybody.

pinkcupcake
07-04-2008, 10:31 PM

Who cares what men 'prefer'? If the survey found that men prefer size 8 women (or even smaller) would that mean women would have to start starving themselves to fit a male's 'ideal' woman? If we really had to strive to fit an 'ideal' we'd probably injure our backs carrying the excess weight of our breasts and have to have numerous surgical procedures to keep from aging. What about preferring intelligence? Integrity? Principles? And what about lesbians - any surveys on what lesbians prefer? Anyway thats my feminist rant over for today..

Im naturally slim and petite, so I should start eating hamburgers all the time until im a 12 like the article says??? You can never win with them really, so yes I love the way you said it toastie! Being short and petite is also difficult some times cause you cant always find clothes that fit nicely (pants are either too long or wide, tops also cause i dont have massive boobs), but despite this Im happy cause no one can compare me to some celebrity or scale cause i aint them, im me dam it!

I think everyone needs to realise also that all men are different and generally, surveys mean nothing! Men find all types of women attractive and it always the entire package and not just womens' appearances that matter at the end of the day.

Women are their own worst enemies when it comes to size and appearance. My girlfriends and my partner all love my body and my appearance, but I often don't.

At the end of the day, it is really ourselves and our own opinions and feelings that we need to take notice of!

We really need to learn to accept and love ourselves.

I found the article in the Sunday paper and scanned the pics of the girls. ;) My boy picked the girl in the middle who is the size 12 because "she is proportioned". I think most guys picked because she has nice boobs and is the best looking (IMO). I think it would be more realistic if they shot the girls all together in the same frame so that you can see the size differences clearly. As I think the size 8 & 12's body's look the same only 12 has bigger boobs.
What do you reckon?
