I need a new moisturiser for night time, so lay em on me - What's your favourite & why?
Do you use a different one at night to day?
Do you have any tricks you want to pass on about getting the most out of "rest time"?
Do you apply cream over the top of a serum?

* I have dehydrated/sensitive skin.

I have dry skin too, but not sensitive so i use almost all the products aslong as they are moisturiser and not for oily skin. I'm currently using the Garnier Nutritionist Nigt cream, i don't usualy like Garnier products but this cream is a dream. So smooth and very hydrating, when i wake up my skin is stil soft and hydrated. I only use it every 2nd night or over my rosehip oil when my skin is really dehydrated and it is all absorbed by the time i get to bed. I think i will purchase the Garnier night cream again. It smells good too. Hope this helps.

During the day i always apply moisturiser over my serum because i fell i need that little extra throughout the day, plus it feels wonderful to finally have smooth healthy looking skin.

Hi Medusa,

I used to use this fabulous night cream by a little-known Australian herbal skincare company called Simplicite- the one I used was called the Revitilising Night Creme, I think. I have skin prone to sensitivities and adored this cream. It is designed for dry-normal and sensitive skin and I found the consistancy to be perfect, the scent gorgeous, and it really improved the texture of my skin & made it glow. Thus, I highly reccomend this whole range.

Medusa, the Adore girls could give you a bit more info (and certainly look at their site) but I remember when I trained with Clarins that they had a very good night cream as part of their sensitive range called Gentle Night Cream (had an apricot coloured lid).

This one will not upset sensitive skin and helps to strengthen against sensitivities. As far as a serum goes, a few drops of their Orchide Blue oil on damp skin does wonders for dehydrated skin and shouldn't upset your sensitive skin.:waving:

I don't actually use a seperate night cream. I have a few night creams that I have got as gifts with purchase etc but never really thought about using them. I do have Clinque Turnaround Cream which is supposedly for night use but I never seem to use it. I just figure by the time I cleanse, tone, serum, moisturise etc that's enough! Is it bad not to use a night cream?

Luisa Brown

A night cream, although not essential, utilises that time of day that the skin goes into repairing mode. Creams designed for "night" are supposed to facilitate this. (pinkcupcake, your la mer is a typical night cream, designed to regenerate the skin).

Depending on skin type, night creams may have a different texture to your day creams and appear "heavier".

Interesting thread Medusa, I have always used a separate night cream.

Luisa I am tempted to buy a 500ml supply of La Mer in Melbourne this weekend. Insanely expensive Yes but I just love it so much that I want a big Jar. Do you think it is better to buy fresh smaller jars more frequently or do you think the biggy would be ok?

I got the La Mer Hand Cream today in the mail! Haven't used it yet!

Luisa Brown

Ooh, where do you get mail order La Mer?

The 500ml definitely saves you money but I would ask myself realistically how long it takes to go through it and perhaps consider the 60ml size (that's the one I buy) if you dont use it often. Apparantly it takes about 3 to 4 months to create La Mer so I would want my active ingredients to be as fresh as possible!:)

(Do let me know what you think of hand cream!)

My friend lives in Sydney so she just gets it for me and express posts it down to me! She is the La Mer Junkie that first got me on to it and convinced me to buy my first pot! Think I will get the 60ml to. Then I can spend the money I save from not buying the 500ml Jar on other exciting products. Gee Thanks Luisa you have just helped me save money! Is it still saving when you spend what you were going to save on other things?

I've got a few night creams on the go at the moment:

Aesop Primrose Facial Cream - smells delish and is nice and rich and creamy - I usually use it over a serum, or mixed with a couple of drops of the Aesop Damascan Rose face oil if my skin is dry
Caudalie Total Night Care - smells nice but is not really floating my boat... I'll use it up though
Apivita Aromatherapy Dream Cream Plus - looooove this! It's not as rich as the other two but it's got a few actives in it (BHA and Vitamin C) so it's a good option on the nights I can't be bothered using a serum.

In Australia the 60ml jar retails for about $450, I get mine when I go to Hong Kong and pay $310 in their department stores. Lasts for ages though as the "broth" melts and spreads easily. I tend to use it for a week at a time when my skin needs it and it is definitely worth using during the winter months. Wouldnt recommend for oilier skins as you can still feel this cream on skin's surface the next morning. Fascinating story behind the making of it!

Tim Tam, as you are only 23 I would suggest you save your money and buy another night cream closer to what your skin needs at the moment.

It usually doesnt make sense to "step up" to the anti-ageing super powers until you are a bit older as then there is nothing to progress to. Does that make sense?

Kate could probably recommend a range for you with properties in it for your skin at this time but you probably (hopefully!!) have no wrinkling or ageing to correct. If you are looking for a "prestige" brand, check out the Christian Dior "No Age" range perfectly designed for your age group. Let me know how you go :)

tim tam
09-12-2006, 10:52 PM
Yeah that makes sense - i should probably save the miracle cream for when i need miracles to happen!!!

I'll definitely check out the No Age you recommend. Not so interested in anti wrinkle, anti aging products because of my age, just looking for products that will protect my skin as such as i get older.

Thanks for the info Luisa

Just though I would let you know that I received my Chanel Sublimage trial jar yesterday. Looks like I will get at least two weeks out of it. It says that you can use as a day and night cream but I will be trialling it for night.

My first impressions - smells cheap! Although this cream has a superb texture it is quite greasy, even for my normal skin, and too much so to consider this for daytime use. Skin does feel soft this morning, for $390 a jar it would want to! Not sure what I am expecting as I am fortunate I have good skin but I will report back so watch this space!

For the moment, this is what the little blurb contained in jar says:

"The process begins with one unique plant Vanilla Planifolia - unearthed in the farthest reaches ofMadagascar - and the world-class research team at the Chanel Laboritories who discovered the tremendous anti-aging power of this precious botanical. With the superior efficacy and luxury of Chanel skin care's precisely selected ingredients, and a specific patent-pending polyfractioning technique created by Canel research, skin undergoes a close to miraculous transformation as if reversing the effects of time as it actively and continually defies it. It's like you never lost your look of youthfulness. Skin is beautifully taut, Silken and supple. Glowing with the look of good health."

Luisa Brown
22-12-2006, 11:09 PM
Ok, first thoughts on the Chanel Sublimage. Been using it for a week now and from my background know that you should give a cream a chance for a full skin cycle (28 days) but thought you may want to know what I think of it.

As I commented in the opener, this cream smells cheap! Really did expect more of a luxuirious scent and thank goodness the texture is sublime! I have been using this only at night as even with my normal skin, this is really quite greasy and takes a long time to absorb.

Has it made any difference yet? No, although skin is slightly softer.

Would I buy it? Mmmm, maybe but not yet.

My next try it projects would be Shi'jano, Strivectin and Prevage, all unique creams with scientific evidence to back them up. Do let me know if any of you have tried these!

Me again!

Just wanted to say that I have re-discovered Clarins Multi Active Night cream! I recently tried the day cream again and love the feel of my skin but the night cream is something else. They make a lighter lotion version but the cream is super for my skin. I had a sample that I took down to the beach and although I only used it for a few nights, the difference was evident almost immediately. Worth the $85!

Clarins is such an ethical product range. Personally, I used the range quite some time ago and gradually evolved into other products, leaving my Clarins items behind.
As Clarins have always been generous with samples, I will pick some up over the weekend and give them trial. ( I always loved the botanicals ).
Thanks LB for jogging my memory!

For those of us Creme De La Mer virgins grab the current issue of Donna Hay's magazine. Just inside the front cover is a double page spread on the story of Le Mer & a promo trial offer.
Take the ad into selected (city) DJs & recieve a 5 day trial supply of "The Miracle Broth" that is Creme De La Mer- until 30th March.

Ooooohhhh, thanks Medusa! Good deal.

I reckon it's worth checking out the fuss. A friend of mine bought me a small jar a couple of years ago when I was a total sceptic. I have combo skin and I thought it would be completely wrong for me. But my skin loved it and it seemed to change the texture somehow. You only need the smallest amount to make a difference. I really enjoyed it at the time but being honest, haven't re-bought, because I can't really justify the price tag....

For all the gals out there that aren't sure about a night cream then you don't have to bother. It is really just marketing - your skin doesn't regenerate at night any more than it does during the day - it's not a stop and start thing just because you're asleep. In fact Dr Hauschka recommends that you don't put anything on your skin at night to let it "breathe". The fact is though that you dont need a sunscreen at night, so it seems silly to slather something on that has no benefit like a moisturiser with a sunscreen, so a seperate cream might make sense here. The only benefit to some creams going on at night is that there is no risk of sun damage with the retinols at their most potent, and also there's less oxidative stress and pollutions bombarding the skin (sunlight, smog, tobacco smoke etc), so some products claim that this increases their effectiveness - but again, it's just heresay - not proof that a night cream is essential.

Having said that, I like nothing more than to go to bed with a luxurious smelling cream on my face and neck and think sweet dreams! But I'm too lazy and tired usually to do this every night (can barely remember to take my make-up off), so the above philosophy suits me!

I have a small jar or Creme de la Mer and I have to say it is truly fabulous, feels like no other cream I have ever tried. Love the texture and the smell also. A few years ago, I too was wondering what all the fuss was about and the lady at DJ's counter (my mums friend)gave me a few small complimentary jars of it, I dont use it all the time- mainly when my skin is really dry, but when I do use it, my skin feels really soft and amazing the next morning. I always use it as a night cream and also as an eye cream. Will save up and buy it one day for sure!!

As for my regular night time routine, I am currently using my good old Estee Lauder Advanced night repair and then a night cream over it once absorbed, right now it's the Garnier Nutritionist night cream .

Curious to know where you got the info from Melissa9419?

About which part? I know about skin and general bodily processes at uni in my medical science degree - studying anatomy, physiology, biochemistry etc. I could go into more detail about cellular turnover etc, but won't.

If you mean the dr H stuff, it's from his philosophy and was explained on another website a few times, and perhaps on their website.

Hope that helps.

I think all information is respected on this forum and it is quite healthy to ask questions and debate certain issues. Thanks for your input Melissa. I too have a medical science degree but majored with a science psychology degree in the end.

However was just wondering what evidence you based your views on night creams from. Would be interested in reading the supporting evidence.

It's always confusing for me as their are so many conflicting opinions on such issues. So I am left with the delemma of should I or shouldn't I be using a night cream.

I'm afraid my medical science degree hasn't given me a superior knowledge on these kind of issues.

I guess my views come from the fact that I am a scientist and can see no proven or researched need for a night cream (physiologically) - especially in respect to how putting a specific moisturiser/active etc designed for night has any benefit over one to use during the day say - my point was not that you shouldn't use anything at night at all - dr H believes that you shouldn't (and I do sometimes do this as well and don't feel guilty!!) - but that there is no evidence for having a seperate or specific cream that works better at night - and I believe it defies physiology as I mentioned, except for the exceptions I noted (retinol creams, those without sunscreens). I was simply implying that if you need a cream at night - why not use your day cream (perhaps one without the unnecessary sunscreen), and save your money!

That was all! hey, but appreciate the debate, any debate!

Fair enough point. There are several creams on the market that can suffice as a day and night cream. More often than not, night creams contain ingredients that make it impractical or harmful to use during the day time for reasons such as consistency (and not mixing well with makeup) or ones that have ingredients in them which should be only used at night such as retinols and AHA's.

Found an interesting blog that talks about this dilemma.

Good point Melissa. I guess I'm just a sucker for a good cream (being a beauty junkie comes first and foremost for me).

It's good to hear it from another perspective. Gives me food for thought. Maybe I might do my own testing. Although I have on many occasions only cleansed and gone to bed because i've been too tired to bother with anything else. My skin gets really dehydrated due to chemical composition of a lot of meds I have to take on a daily basis! I hate waking up with my skin feeling tight and dry. I find my La mer has been really helping with the after effects of a few recent anaesthetics.

Clarins Multi Active Night Lotion is lovely for a combo skin, it has quite a light texture.

Have you tried Dermalogica Power Rich? A nice, lightish moisturiser but it really does the trick. Quite expensive, but a little goes a long way. When I am flush with funds (v. rarely) I love this for a day cream and La Mer for a night cream. Just my 2c worth :spin:

Have been using a mini of the Clarins Multi Active Night Cream for almost two weeks and have to put in a big rave!

So, so good. I can't believe I haven't used a night cream til now. My skin feels so soft in the morning. I was worried it would freak out at all the extra moisture but, perhaps not surprisingly, it's the opposite.

Now I just have to save up for the big boy...

See now I want to try this as I love my Clarins…but it will take a lot to tear me away from my Alpha H one…do you love it that much, Miss Raspberry? ;)

Sapphire, you would love the Clarins one and it would be a great alternative when you want/need a break from your active night cream. The make a lotion version of this too.

Raspberry are you using the original cream or the lotion? What is the difference (aside from consistency)?

Also, Luisa B I thought I did not need to have a break from the Alpha H? Will it potentially irritate or weaken my skin?

I can't/don't do Garnier - the few things I have tried have been ineffective or else just really irritated by skin.

The cream Saph. I haven't used the lotion, I imagine it's lighter; though the cream itself has a light consistency. Sorry, not much help! Kate may have better advice...

No, you dont need to but it is a good alternative for your skin's different needs.

I have not used any active products for a month now. Skin was feeling a little fragile so evenings have me using UC Ultra Moisturiser or Creme de la Mer. My skin looks :) now.:clapping:
