So is anyone taking part in Earth Hour this Saturday night? I didn't know anything about it until I saw a hot air balloon in the shape of a lightbulb hovering over Adelaide the other day. It's similar to what Sydney did last year, but this is going to involve a few cities around the world.

All you have to do is switch off your lights and unplug any non-essential appliances between 8pm and 9pm this Saturday 29th March. You can register for free at www.earthhour.org

I'm not normally into this environmental stuff, but it's about time I was, so I'm taking part.

I'll do it if I'm home, not going to register though.
I think it's a great idea and the results will be interesting, but yeah. To be honest I don't think they have publicised it that well.

Yeah I agree Trash - there hasn't been much advertising. I mean, they go and float a hot air balloon over Adelaide on Easter Sunday - when half of Adelaide is away on holidays!

I think there were over 2 million people that took part in Sydney last year, but they'd be lucky if they've even got a quarter of that registered so far. And there are big cities like Chicago and Toronto taking part, so where is everyone??:penguin:

It hasn't been advertised here.

I will be at work, but I will turn off & unplug all I can before I go to work.

You sure it was for Earth Hour LMV? Sounds like a cruel joke to me!

I will be at a Japanese restaurant for Miss'' birthday. We have two kids staying over so am not sure. Could be fun for them though when we get home. I am sure I will only be able to hear giggles.

Oh no, I like Prius'!! Al Gore I could go without :chuckle: (sorry oz, I shouldn't smack talk your hubby). Earth Hour just seems a little pointless to me... I mean shouldn't we all endeavour to turn our lights and unnecessary electricity out all the time? Not just when we feel it's the 'trendy' thing to do? Not saying that everyone involved is bandwaggoning, but a LOT of people are.

Just my opinion.

I agree with you VeeE. When I read that people would switch things off as they leave home, I thought "I do that all the time anyway". I hate wasting power and it is not all about the size of the electricity or gas bill that arrives - it is about the sheer waste.:shakehead:

I usually do it all the time too LB - just this time I'll turn off the TV point at the power and my alarm clock for example.

Yeah I agree somewhat. I despise hypocrisy and I hate the idea that Earth Hour is being embraced by people with a completely over-consuming lifestyle. That being said, symbolism and awareness-raising is always a good thing.

Every little bit makes a huge difference - of course, working for an energy company that is leading in it's enviromental concern and solutions, we have this in our face every day, it's hard not to do all the things they suggest!

I think there is football on the TV. I would class that as essential.

Having said that i will make sure everything else is turned off for the night.

I have to say I agree - I do my damndest, and have for years, so to have someone who has just decided this is the way to save the world tell me that I *have* to do it kind of irks me.

As Vee says not everyone who is involved is bandwaggoning, but a lot are. I walk 99% of the places I go, I recycle, I turn out lights (and have changed all the house globes to flourescent), my garden is a desert, I turn the tap off while brushing, I have 3 minute showers. And yet, someone who drives a car most places, runs aircon in their home/office, and has a 10 minute shower, can tell me that because they turn the power off for 1 hour a year, they are more concerned withthe environment than I am.

Hell no!!

And yes, I did run into someone who fits that description this morning, and was lectured for about 30 seconds, before I did my block and turned the questions around.

raspberryberet
28-03-2008, 02:18 PM
I don't think we're being lectured. It's a choice.

Anything that promotes awareness of a better future for our kids is fine by me. Sometimes you need this kind of promotion or event to encourage a sense of community spirit and help people connect to a cause through each other. I think it's smart marketing.

Rosie
28-03-2008, 02:20 PM
Oh no, I don't think we are being lectured overall - I was. This morning on my way back from housecleaning. I know the guy who was lecturing me, and he p!ssed me off, because he does all the things that he was telling me not to!

If I ever need to get wheels, I'd get a Prius (if I could afford it - hahahaha) or a scooter, rather than a car - unless I had to go long distances on highways. Then I'd get a very small car.

Sorry Rosie, was responding to previous posts. You're right, it's the worst hearing it from a hypocrite!

I think everyone that recycles, uses green bags etc should give themselves a pat on the back but keep it up!

The small practical things definitely make a difference in our backyard but collectively they have so much more impact. I think that's the idea of Earth Hour.

:chuckle: Yes, interesting to see what everyone sees as essential and non-essential. I guess footy is part of our culture, so it's a good excuse.

We debated for about half an hour whether the TV should go off or stay on. So we thought lets be strict & switch the TV off. Then 10 minutes later, out came the little battery operated TV :chuckle: Omg - 10 minutes seemed like aaages in the dark! But I love burning candles & this was a great excuse to get heaps of them going at once.

I guess I should start doing small things around the house like switching appliances off at the power point if they're not going to be used for a few hours. Like RB said - if everyone did these little things, no matter how insignificant they seem to the individual, they make a huge difference in the big picture. That's what this was all about. And it's really made me realise that. Our generation won't have to deal with the consequences of our actions - it's our children, and their children and so on.

I had a bit of a debate with a family friend yesterday (he lives a couple of doors down & I said to him that if I didn't see the lights out at 8, then I would come and personally switch off the mains power!). Anyway, first he asked what Earth Hour was. Then he just said that there was no point, because tomorrow, there won't be any less cars on the road & that it wouldn't stop me driving in my car tomorrow. But it wasn't to do with driving cars on the road, it was more to do with energy consumption eg turn off that light if you're going to leave the room, even if you think it'll only be for a minute; switch that appliance off from the power point if you're not going to use it etc etc... Little things, but lots and lots of little things equals big difference!

It's about emission reduction, which is what using electricty causes, so no different that drying your hair, using a microwave, or driving your car.

We turned the lights off and worked by candle power. The fridges stayed on, but we did the money by hand, wrote it all down and rang it up after 9.

That's a great effort Rosie!

The Japense restaurant didnt do it but we went to the Gelo Bar (ice cream) a few doors away and I thought they were closed! They just had one coloured neon on inside and you couldnt see the colours of the icecreams! Everyone commented them on a great effort though.:clapping:

It was really funny actually because me and my bf were walking outside to the car and I was like, "Oh crap that earth hour thing was today, what were we doing at 8? Did we have the lights on?"
And it turns out that we were busy with the bed sheets anyway so we did our part in the end :chuckle::chuckle:

I was at the movies with the god chidren when Earth Hour was on. When we pruchased the tickets they said it could be a bit dark when we came out as they were participating in Earth Hour. Funny thing was that they didn't even bother in the end!! We came out to normal lights etc. When we got home I made the kids sit in the dark for 30 minutes just to try and educate them a little. They thought it was cool sitting in the dark until I mentioned the boogie man!:chuckle:
