Hi Allison,

Just after some advice on behalf of a friend of mine. She has extremely oily skin and no matter what she tries her face is an oil silck a couple of hours after cleansing it. She also has very large pores and if she squeezes them alot of oil pours out.

She is looking for a new skincare regime to try and stop this from happening.

Any recomendations you could give would be great.

Thanks in Advance,
Angela.

Angela Leigh I have really oily skin too so I know how your friend feels. What do you you mean the oil pours out though? Do you mean gunk comes out of the pores or literally runny(ish) oil? Does she have acne or get pimples too or just oiliness? How old is she? What sort of diet does she have? What skincare products does she currently use? Sorry about all the questions but this may help get a feel for what is going on..

I have recently realised that my oily skin is not going to go away - it is my skin-type after all and you cannot change what god (or your dna) gave you...most of the time! But you can control it to a degree with good diet and skincare products, and in some cases, complimentary medicine or supplements from a health professional (all this is where Allison will be able to help you, and our own Adorable Luisa Bear, of course :))

I do find that a non-irritating, non-harsh (ie low or no-foaming) cleanser really helps to balance my skin and stop it over producing oil.

I also like DermaDoctor Tease Zone Oil Control gel (like a primer) as it really does control my shine for a few extra hours (see http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewItem.asp?idproduct=5628) but it is more of a cover-up than a long term solution. This is my own experience though and your friend's cause of oiliness may be different to mine in some respects so what works for me may not for her/him. Of course gentle exfoliation is also crucial. Can't wait to see what our lovely experts have to say though :)

Skincare advice is of course extremely important, but with oily skin it is super-important to take care of it from the inside. Heaps of water to keep it nice and hydrated (oil + dehydration is not a good look) and healthy food to keep your skin strong and nourished so it doesn't go dull and pimply.

For what it's worth, when I eat fatty/fried food I can FEEL my skin producing more oil. I can literally feel it pouring out of the pores. So maybe your friend should consider cutting out fatty and fried things!

Hey Saph and Oz.

I'll do my best to answer your questions. She says that when she squeezes a pore literally runny oil (like a tear drop) comes out. She also says that sometimes her face gets so oily that it hurts. She does get pimples with it too. She's 24 and her skin has always been oily despite her diet. What she eats doesn't seem to make a difference and at the moment she's on a very healthy diet including heaps of fresh fruit and veg and plenty of water. At the moment she is using a Neutrogena Cleanser for oily skin, a Biore toner for young skin and a oile free matifying moisturising gel mad be a local make-up guy Neville Cooper (Sorry about the lack of specifics, I keep asking her and this is the best info I could get).

I think that she's a bit loke you Saph, just unlucky with what she was given. I am trying to convince her that there are better products out there for her than what is available locally.

Hope this info was helpful...

those products can be quite harsh & r more than likely causing more oil production :)

I find the wrong products, especially the wrong moisturiser, make my skin super oily. Yet with the right products my skin is normal. I am loving the Ultraceautical moisturiser - no tightness and no greasey feel.

I'd recommend Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser. Great for people with really oily skin but not so much concerned about breakouts. The clay in it absorbs oil which is great :D

There are benefits to oily skiin. Those who are oily when they are younger, tend to age better, so long as they don't do any of the major no-no's (smoking, no SPF).

Mmm...my skin does not seem that oily (no tear drops of oil). The poor girl! It does sound like it is very hormonal - not just skin type. I also agree with fuss - those products are not necessarily good for oily skin as they can be quite harsh which makes the problem worse. Skin needs to be treated with gentle loving care as it can be delicate and temperamental when given the wrong treatment. I am hesitant to suggest any products for her though until Allison has responded herself although the Dermalogica one would be good - except the menthol in it is an irritant for some skins so she would need to be careful. Alpha H's Triple Action is excellent for oily skin and as a non-foaming cleanser it also gentle.

Does she get cystic/painful pimples?

that can be hereditary : (

So what she really needs is a cleanser that is going to thoroughly cleanse with a gel base that won't strip natural oils (as the skin will then just produce more)

sounds like she also needs something to help clear the skin too... I am thinking some glycolic in there..

without consulting with her it's hard because I am not sure how complex or simple she is going to want to go.

for now I will keep it simple and she can pop by the forum and maybe ask some more questions.

AM

cleanse:peter thomas roth glycolic face wash: http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=11161

follow with the alpha h balancing moisturiser:http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=380
the glycolic will help to clear out the skin

finish with the very light becca primer SPF 30+: http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=11020

PM
cleanse

follow with the ultaceuticals ultra a serum:http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=1828
this will help unclogg and will sink into the skin easily

use the bloom blotting papers during the day to keep oil under control:http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=873

I could easily recommend a more full routine but let's start with this and if she wants to consider another clearing serum for day time I can put one in as well as an exfoliant and clearing mask...

let me know.
