View Full Version : Growing Out Short Hair Into Long
I have made the decision to grow out my short hair into long again. Short hair has become irritating for me and I'm missing my long hair :tears: I think I'd feel sexier and hotter with long hair as well! :whipcrack:
I curently have a concave bob (pob) and I have a hair appointment for next week, and I will tell my hairdresser of my decision and get her to cut it straight across (bobbed, but without the concave) which I believe will make it look a little better and as it grows straight (am I right?)
Are there any other Adoreables out there who are doing or have done the same thing? (Toastie - you're growing your hair too aren't you?) Any advice? I am quite scared of the growing out stage (above the shoulders!) - what can i do to make this easier?
Thanks :hugs:

Oh heck yeah! It nearly drove me bonkers when it was at teh horrible can't-do-a-damn-thing-with-it stage, which seemed to last forever. I am now at a length wehre I am relatively happy.
To make it easier - chocolate, lots and lots of chocolate.
:chuckle: Thanks Rosie! How long did it take - that growing out stage? Weeks? Months?

Felt like years, but was more like months.
Yours will be easier as it is longer than mine was to start, and looks to be pretty much 1 length - I had umpty million short layers.

Oh when I was growing out my hair it took forever..... but I have very fine hair which gets damaged easily so to keep it healthy I had to have lots and lots of trims. Try and look after it very very well so that you dont have to cut it more then you have to every time you go to the hair dresses! And yes chocolate does help!:penguin:

Hi emmy! Yes indeed I am growing out my short hair. Basically my hairdresser is doing it in a special growing-out-way. Instead of just not getting my hair cut for 2 years he's cutting it differently everytime I see him, so that I don't get up with a mullet or a mushroom head or something.
Talk you your hairdresser about it, she probably has a plan. Mine also said to wait at least 8 weeks between every hair cut. He said "wait until you really, really hate it and you can't stand it anymore...then wait another week and then call me".
I got mine cut really, really short (like Rhianna short) in about September last year and it's now in a cute chin-length bob. My tip is to be patient and appreciate your hair in it's different lengths! Throughout my whole growing-out process I've been like "oooh...this length looks adorable...maybe I should keep it like this?". It'll be easier than you think!

At least it is already at the chin-length stage! Do you have an idea of what your 'goal' length/style would be? That will give your stylist a better idea of what you are aiming for so that he/she can cut it appropriately, to minimise the dreaded growing-out phase.
Try some clips, pins, scarves, headbands or hats to disguise or draw attention away from the parts you don't like. When I was growing out my hair I would take little pieces and twist and pin them randomly to disguise the different lengths of my hair. You could do the same thing with little plaits (just plait a few sections of hair and pin them back, tucking the rest under). You will probably have to experiment with each stage to see what you like -- try curling/straightening irons, rollers etc as well. Good luck!
Thanks Toastie & Seagreen :hugs:
My goal length would be down to my back bra strap - so mid back and quite long - I had it this long before. Possibly with some layers and a side swept fringe. I will post a pic of what I've had before later on!
Yes I'm lucky, its already half way between chin length and shoulders. Its just a case of getting it past my shoulders to look okay - I can put my hair into a small pony, but I am still growing out a very small hair length at the back/nape of my neck which doesn't look so good!
Hmm well my hair is coming along okay...but I'm starting to get to the point of feeling really ugly :tears:
I am nearly to my shoulders with the hair length, am still growing out the back nape of the neck hair, which doesn't quite reach the pony tail when I wear it up (which is every day)
I am thinking it is definitely time for a cut (it has been 12/13 weeks now?) but I am so scared to, I don't want it any shorter. My main concern is growing the back long enough, so I can get it cut straight across and not the concave it is now. I think I am also starting to notice some damage to the ends (not drastic at all, just the beginings of some split ends) so it is time to get a trim, but I'm fairly scared!

Just get the ends snipped off - will make a big difference!

I agree with Seagreen. Don't just put it in a Ponytail everyday, style it with headbands, clips etc. Likely you won't be able to this when your hair is much longer & heavier. Coming up to Winter bobs look fantiastic under hats & beanies, so spoil yourself with some.
To minimise the trims keep your hair in top condition. Do regular treatments and lay off the heat stylers. I found that when I embraced my curls and stopped blowdring my hair everyday that my trims became less & less. Now I only get my hair cut a couple of times a year and even then it is minimal because it is in such good condition.

Go get a trim. Just the dry bits.
I had my hair cut the other day. I got her to get rid of the dry bits on the ends of the longer hair (I am growing out layers) and then when she showed me, I got her to chop even more off, cause it still looked icky (she said it wasn't dry, and no split ends, but it just didn't look right). My hair is now at my collar, from being near my bra-strap. But it's healthier than ever.

I only got mine cut 3/4 weeks ago but already it has grown a lot, so juet get the bare minimal off and it will be fine Em!
I suppose quality over quantity. :redcheeks: But it's so annoying, it takes so long to grow. Can't wait til its past my shoulders. I should make an appointment for 2 weeks time. And i need to get that Kerastase heat protectant!
Does anyone have any advice on how much you should be shampoo/conditioning you hair as you grow? Water weakens the hair, doesn't it? I am washing it everyday - natural and gentle products, but still everyday and I am worried this may be too much?

I am washing mine everyday atm (why, with my crap shower, I don't know) and my hair is in fantastic condition and has grown significantly already (The cleaner told me in the toilets on Tuesday she preferred it now a bit longer than when it was first done)
The products I use may also come into it.

I am growing mine, too.
I started at very short, almost a pixie cut and it is almost to my bra strap, now, almost two years later. I kept layers and fringe. My hair grows pretty fast and is super thick and coarse, like a horse's tail, someone (Be-yotch that she was) told me once. I go in and get it trimmed and colored every three months, with trims and fringe shape up as needed monthly. I have almost black hair underneath with nice ashy, brown highlights.
Headbands are your friend!! LOL Even if you won't wear them out in public, they are a godsend for hot days at home and for face washing and making up.
Good luck. You will get there.
