Inspired by another thread I realised how much I love shopping at markets.
So I wanted to know what everyone's favourite ones were. Food, art, clothes whatever, just what/where/why they are your favourite.
I love the Wahroonga Fair that happens only once a year!!! They have LOTS of crap, but there are a few jewellery stalls that have lovely stuff. Although last time I went I got the WORST food poisoning from the Turkish Golzeme. We're talking a week and A seven kilo weight loss! 'Twas baaaaad.
I also love the Rocks markets, again for the jewellery- actually, you know what I only ever go markets for jewellery.
Rozelle Markets are fab, if a little crowded.
When I was in yr 7 I went to markets in a village called Meng Sur Loire in France and they had the most amazing food market every Sunday (we were there for 2 weeks) and we accidentally ate horse meat. It's the grosest meat! :chuckle:

Although I dont have a lot of patience to sift and rummage, I love the Victoria Market. The tiny deli windows, the fruit and veggies and the meat and fish hall are enthralling but you had better get there early!
There are hundreds of sellers in the main part with a huge assortment of gear plus a pet store in the middle. As I said, I dont have the patience to wander but a huge amount of overseas and interstate visitors do!
The Prahran Market is another quality destination and home of The Essential Ingredient.

I love the Rocks market too VeeE and the Salamanca one. Visited some fabulous markets overseas, my favourite were in Florence. The most memorable though were in China and Hong Kong - talk about a ton of stuff on offer!:shakehead:

The Old Bus Deport Markets across the road from me are fantastic, and huge! There are regular food, clothing, craft and gardening stalls but each week there's a different theme; sometimes jewellery, sometimes local produce or wine etc. I rarely leave empty-handed, whether it's a punnet of enormous organic strawberries, a $5 bunch of lillies or something handmade that I'll never use.
I like the Paddington markets in Sydney too.
I'm kicking myself for not going to Portobello Road while we were in London a couple of years ago.

I've never been to the Prahran markets. If it's anything like the vintage/second hand stores in Prahran/Windsor I imagine it would be great!

Hope we can time our Paddington trip to coincide with the market. Have never been to this one despite countless trips to Sydney.

I love the Victoria Market in Melbourne - Always make a trip there when in Melbourne. Think it will be a weekly thing for me when living in Melbourne.
I also love Salamanca Markets in Hobart - Can't help it I have to be faithful to my home turf!

Got to say I'm not the hugest fan of markets. Generally I find that the same stallholders frequent different markets in the same localities and their wares don't really vary all that much. That being said, I do like handmade candles and my favourite part of markets are fresh flowers, produce and jams/marmalades. I just picked up two relishes at a market here yesterday - chili beetroot relish and tomato eggplant relish. Yum!

I only usually buy beauty things, scented candles and ecclectic litte foods that you just can't get anywhere else.
I forgot to say in a previous post I really like St Kilda Market.

I forgot about the St Kilda Market too! Oh, and the Sunday market around the Victorian Art Centre. This one is particularly good.

Definitely the Queen Vic markets for beautiful fruit, veg, meats and Deli goods. The cheese selection is the best.

Queen Vic Market is good for food, but I find that's pretty much it for me. Nothing really else interesting I find. Love the St.Kilda Markets. Especially the night ones.

Oh I love having a fossic around the Victoria Markets. I love looking for oversized cheap watches and hand made hair brushes and I love the Corn on the Stick you can guts into on the way around. J usually dumps me there on the side of the road and comes back a few hours later to get me.
Oh and there's the added bonus of The Sohum and Tea shops on the outskirts. Oh and don't get me started on Spanish Dohnuts.

Oh Oh Oh! :penguin: A market thread! Good on you Trash, I LOVE markets! :hearts:
I just love the thrill of the hunt, not knowing what treasures you may find, eating good market food whilst listening to some live music and watching the puppet show with my kids. I have sold my old gear at many markets too but it is a struggle not to spend all my profit buying things from the other stallholders!
You can seach for market details here

My faves in Sydney are
Rozelle - Love the atmosphere here. I think it is better on the Sunday when there are more 2nd hand goods sold by their owners rather than dealers (cheaper). Great Himalayian food and live music. Sometimes there is a an old fashioned puppet show for free also.
Glebe - This market has changed a bit and I still yearn for the glory days when it was grungier but it is still a great day out. We often lay on the grass to eat lunch whilst listening to the music or watching jugglers practise their trade. My Boy loves to buy CDs here.
http://www.glebemarkets.com.au/
Bondi - I used to drop the Boy off to surf whilst I hit the market often not returning at the agreed time only for him to find me laden with goods in the market, him wet and lugging a surfboard :chuckle: Lots of cool new designers and vintage goods.
http://www.bondimarkets.com.au/
Paddington - This is THE market for up and coming designers. Tons of fashion and jewellery. Can be a bit exy but most of it is great quality. Near impossible to get a carpark though.
http://www.paddingtonmarkets.com.au/
Balmain - Set in the grounds of a beautiful little old church (which becomes the food hall). This is mostly an arts & crafts market. The food is great but it can get pretty crowded.
Blacktown - This is a hard core garage sale style market, def not for the faint hearted. Its set in the old Drive-Ins and it is Fareezing! in winter as the movie screen blocks the morning sun til midday. There is an entry fee, prices depending on time of arrival. You have to get there at the cracker, 7am to get the good stuff. I'm talking any old crap you could dream of, there is aisles and aisles of it. Mostly I buy preloved kids toys, books and clothes at bargin basement prices. You need to be a good haggler and have eyes in the back of your head, there are lots of thieves here.
http://www.blacktownmarkets.com.au/bm.swf
North Rocks - This market is run by the Lions Club and entry is by coin donation. Again you need to be early as this is also a second hand market. More increasingly however antique dealers have overun it meaning higher ticket prices which is a shame.
Tomorrow morning I am going to a farmer's market that is launching at a new site. Will report back.
I have been dying to get to Kirrabilli but just haven't made it yet. :redcheeks: I think that really is shameful for me. CJ we must meet up there. ;) Also on the To Do list is the Surry Hills market.

I think the main reason I don't like markets much is:
1) They usually start really early and I hate getting up early
2) They don't take eftpos and I'm hopeless at carrying cash.
So what it comes down to is....I'm a giant loser. :chuckle:

yes the Himalayian food is the only good thing about the Rozelle markets now! I used to go every weekend a few years back and it was great.. But the last few times I have been it's just been really junky with the same junk every weekend not selling. Shame, cos the food is so good. Waffles too mmm.

Scoped out a new Farmer's market today and despite the rain it was packed!
http://www.hawkesburyharvest.com.au/markets_home.asp
That chef, Ed from Better Homes & Gardens was doing cooking demos and boy was he good :worship: He would just walk around the market collecting ingrediants to whip up something off the top of his head. Really strange combo too, tea, brown sugar and brown rice to smoke lamb anyone? There was lots of gorgeous food producers there. I was most excited about the Duck famers and the hot Smoked Salmon :fish: that just won 1st prize at the Easter show (just had to buy some it was delish!) also got a baked apple pie from the Apple farmers to eat later tonight :p
Plan to go back next month to buy up big with some quality ingrediants that are very hard to come by otherwise. :glee:

We took J's parents to Salamanca today. Managed to pick them up some lovely Tassie treats for their Easter Gift. I got My sis-in-law to be some Beauty & the bees products for Easter!
She is a budding beautyista. She is thinking of joining the forum. When she goes into my bathroom or cupboards she is like a kid in a candy store. J says this is definitely not a good thing!!:chuckle::chuckle:
If she joins she is a beautiful, beautiful girl so all give her a big welcome! Will let you know when she joins.

I love going to the fresh Veggie and Flower markets too (Flemington in Sydney). You need to get up VERY early but you can get just about anything your heart so desires very cheaply. Its best to go with a few friends so you can share the bounty. Its cheaper to buy by the box than a few peices at a time. Oh and try to nab a trolley, you'll need it!
