View Full Version : Glasses!

I thought we could use a thread devoted to all talk about sunnies and regular glasses. There are so many styles out there and the right pair can really make a difference!!
My current sunglasses are a pair of Oroton ones in "Bayview" design. I love them. I'm not one who can really have more than one pair of sunnies, I prefer to be minimalistic in this respect! I also have two pairs of reading glasses - one are thin rectangular bronze wire frames and the others are blue-green swirled plastic rectangular frames.
Anyway the real reason I posted this is because I need help hunting for my newest pair of glasses! I really want a pair that are rimless with very discreet side bars (or whatever you call them). I want a slightly cat-eye shape if possible - nothing Dame Edna, just a bit different. If that's not possible, I'll settle for rectangular (can't reeeally do oval unless they're very wide, I have a broad round face). If Adorables can post any pics/links for me, it would be most appreciated!
(if anyone watched The Interpreter on tv tonight, i loooved the rimless glasses that Nicole Kidman wore)

Oz - I can't help too specifically with your request for links to rimless frames, but I got some new frames last year and there were plenty of rimless (or semi-rimless) around in the shops! Can you take a pic of Nicole Kidman's ones, plus your other criteria (which seem pretty clear!) into a few stores and get their recommendations? You will quickly see whether they have what you are looking for, AND you can try on some designs you may not have thought of! The lucky thing with rimless frames is that you don't need to consider frame colour/thickness/shape quite so much, since they are much subtler...
One thing I would consider, especially if you want something a little bit different, is trying to find smaller boutique stores that will have frames that are different from the chain stores (OPSM, Laubman and Pank etc will all have similar frames). You will pay more for them, but since glasses last 5 years or so (for me, anyway!), you want something that you love and will not grow tired of after 6 months! It is worth shopping around to find the perfect pair.
You will notice also that there are many online glasses stores, which seem quite cheap! If you find a frame you like, get the model and make details, and get your prescription (including your pupillary distance (PD)) from your optometrist. That is all you should need to order online... Oh BTW, many of these sites also allow you to upload your photo and try different frames on 'virtually'.
My new frames -- chosen after many, MANY visits to eyewear stores last year -- are from a Berlin designer, Markus T. They are titanium with black plastic, uniquely screwless, hingeless, light-as-a-feather -- and I love them! :) They are rectangular across the bottom but gently curved on top. The arms are very thin titanium bars.

My my reading glasses - I wear CK. My Sunnies I wear DKNY (I have had my sunnies since 2006, theyre a classic browny/black, simple design, so comfy on my nose - I can't wear some glasses as they hurt)
I use to have reemless glasses for reading etc but I changed to my current CK - the frame is small slightly oval shaped, a deep burgandy colour. I love them.

haha it sounds crazy but i would love to have glasses ... i'd even go to the extremes to get fake glasses, with the clear lens so they don't do any damage to your eyes. i'd so do that ... apparently you can get really cheap and fashionable ones around the place.
i always break my sunglasses so mum told me to get my current pair for $5.00 from golo. :D i don't mind though ... i always used to buy ones for $30 - $50 and then i would always break them so i was just like 'meh, i'll give it a go' and these turn out to be the ONLY ones i haven't broken (as yet!). don't jinx me though. :D they've lasted a while though so that's good.

I have a lovely pair of D & G, in a bronze metallic colour. I don't like the look of too 'bold' glasses. I like people to see the person under the frames, not just the frames! have a dodgy pair of prescription sunnies for driving (can't get a nice pair of prescription sunnie, due to the fashion at the moment, and the high prescription I need) I bought my first pair of expensive sunnies recently (to wear with my contacts), they are a BEAUTIFUL Gucci pair, very glam! spent nearly $500, then I DROPPED them about 3 hours after I bought them. I could have died :( big scratch on the lense and frame....don't want to wear them now...

I dont need glasses yet but tried on a gorgeous pair of Missoni ones a couple of weeks ago when we were choosing hubby's glasses. They looked hot!
I have a pair of brown Ralph Lauren sunglasses that I never wear but were a good deal. My current pair are the oversized Fendi ones below. I also have a pair of Fendi ones that are a rectangular shape (also black) and a pair of vintage Fendi horn sunglasses which I keep in the car.

I have glasses for reading but I don't wear them because I suffer quite badlt from shield ulcers in my eyes which makes my vision blurry anyway and requires me to use lots of different prescription eye drops.
My Glasses are DKNY ones for reading. Just thin slimlines squareish shaped.
Sunglasses on the otherhand:
Prada's
Chanel - Black with mother of pearl logo.
Calvin Kleins x 2
Versace

My everyday glasses are Prada, with silver detailing on the arms. I love these glasses so much more than my old ones which were my first pair, these ones are more classy and not as boring as my old ones.
Now the glasses that i really love are my prescription sunnies, they are Dior with diamantes in the word "dior" down the side. They are big and black and they make me feel glamorous!!! :chuckle: Oh and they help me see too.

For sunnies, I like my Prada.
For actual seeing (distance), I have a lovely pair with dark green rims but no idea what brand. I have to get them in the children's section as I have such a tiny head (or pinhead, as my brother refers to it).

I did this once and, man that was a self esteem shattering day... I went to Dotti with one of my friends and we decided to buy fake glasses(we were like 14). Anyway we went back to my place and my parents and her parents were there. We decided to model our new looks for everyone, so she put on hers firstand everyone was like "OMG!!! You look like a model!!!", so I threw on mine and they all said "Oh... you look like a scientist!!" W.T.F? I was DEVASTATED. I think I cried for like 2 days. Like I didn't think I was an ugly freak enough!!!!
Gah, that story makes me want to cry even today.
So... the moral of the story is be sure you don't look like a scientist when you buy fake glasses.

:chuckle: I have exactly the opposite problem, my head is huge! The good thing is, I can't blame it on being fat because, well, you don't put on weight on your head, do you? Whenever there is a photo of me and other people with our heads close together, mine always looks MARKEDLY bigger! BOO!

Oh babe! Sounds like the story of my life!!!
Well I went and looked at a few pairs of glasses today - nothing that I even remotely liked.

Oz -- keep trying with your search for new glasses! It took me about two months (going every weekend) to finally find and settle on a pair I liked...

I wear glasses for distance. I tried contacts but I just couldn't get used to putting them in and taking them out....actually got all squirmy having to take them out, I'm a wuss!
At the moment I have 3 pairs of glasses, the ones I wore the most are an Esprit silver pair, until I saw a photo of myself a few weeks back and thought they just don't look right. Then I have this fantastic pair of purple on the outside blue on the inside Jonathan Sceats - thick frame love these. Then I also have an old pair that I wear on the odd occassion they are an unusual matt bronze sort of color very thin frame and oh so light I think the brand is Modo. I have a very small face so struggle with getting glasses, takes me months to find a new pair. I've actually been looking lately but haven't found anything yet.
