I met with a Definitely Excellent makeup artist and lovely woman in general last week, Fiona who has just released her line of makeup brushes called Smudge (call 1300 720 413). They are very good, very simple to use and when she explained how to use them all, I felt like I actually didn't know very much about applying makeup at all. But that happens a lot with me: every time I meet a clever new expert with new techniques...

A la Rebecca Morrice Williams. This is exactly how she explained blush application in her Consult thread.:clapping:

Fuity mentions that she puts her MAC powder blush on first and then her Becca cream one on top. Che?

Wonder if she meant to write it the other way around? Cream blush ON TOP of powder?????

Yeah, I do not get putting creme on top of powder. I know people do it, obviously, but I find it just smears the powder! I'm a creme-to-creme, powder-to-powder gal.

I think the key is patting it and it then doesn't smear at all.

Yeah....although I don't really get how you can blend it without rubbing/smearing a bit? Wouldn't it just end up as a series of fingerprints?

maybe its so the creme has something to 'stick' too? cause the oil in your skin or even foundation may not help the creme to stick... but wouldnt powder help that? And you wouldnt really get colour pay off with it would you?

Nah no fingerrints, you don't need much to get the effect and patting it on gives great results.

Oh well - if I look stupid, at least I think I look pretty.

I always only apply blush to the apples of my cheeks. Creme Blush first and then a dab of powder over the top to lock in the colour.

I thought that's how you are supposed to apply if using both - not the other way around!

It's each to their own I say. Makeup Application really has no rules because as soon as they make the rules, some new age makeup master turns around and changes or breaks them.

Choosing colours and applying blush make me nervous. I've never been confident with it. I will go home tonight and practise.

I dunno, I kinda like the look when blush is gently blended up and out from the apples. I don't like to keep it just to the apples, doesn't look right on me unless I am going for a particularly little-girl look.

I played around/practised and have decided that (unfortunately) I don't get the little girl look when I apply it just to the apples of my cheeks - it's much more of a little old lady look. I am happier with the 'blended up and out from the apples' shape that Ozlicious recommends. I need to remember to keep the shape and colour soft and rounded and avoid that stripe of the 80's.

:chuckle::chuckle::chuckle:

Reminds me of my Nan. When I was a little kid, Nan used a powder blush that she applied with a Powder Puff moving it in circular motionover the apples of her cheeks. :hugs:

Hi Thelma! :waving: How is everything?

:waving: Everything is going along nicely, thanks. I am enjoy "chatting' (mostly) in my lunch break, but I love the shopping on this site. I have never found the smiles before - they are a lot of fun aren't they?

Yes me too. Also my cheekbones are already quite high and I find if I do the smile and apple-application thing the blush ends up looking too low. I prefer to apply to to the lower contour of my cheekbones and blend along. Mmm...I also don't get why we are not supposed to apply blush to the cheekbone itself? Sounds odd to me...

Yes Yes, me to. And if I smile then put it on my apples, when I'm not smiling, the colour is too close to my nose. No wonder blusher application makes me nervous. Too many variables eg colours, shapes and face contours. This is why I apply the colour very lightly - if it's wrong at least it isn't loud.

I think I might call the 'shape' of my blusher an egg. With the widest part closest to the centre of my face and then fading out in shape and colour towards the top of my ears. I think it's working for me!
