View Full Version : How Often is Too Often?

Hi. I have short hair which I am trying to grow long again. My hairdresser has recommended that I wait at least 8 weeks (if not more) between each cut to really seeing growing results. However, the last time I had my hair cut he also dyed it a fantastic shade of bright red. Now, this has faded (as expected) quite significantly.

Would it be implausible to maybe go back and get my hair re-dyed every 4 weeks or something but wait a bit longer in between cuts? And would 4 weeks be too often, will my hair fall out? Does anybody else do this? Ta!

If your colour is a semi (it sounds like it is if it's washing out) then you should be able to get it re-dyed every few weeks without any damage at all, especially if you get a treatment done at the same time! Colouring and cutting really don't have anything to do with each other in terms of the condition of your hair, and I usually colour my hair about once a month (with a semi) and it's fine.

If it's a permanent colour, you'd really have to ask your HD. I can't imagine he or she would want you walking around with sad faded hair though, so I'm sure they have the answer. Maybe they can put a gentle semi through in between the permanents. And remember - treatments, treatments, treatments!

Could you get a shampoo/conditioner with a bit of colour in it? I use a Revlon one to keep my hair the right colour before I get it dyed agin. Would help to keep the red more vibrant for longer?

Reds fade so fast, it's painful. When I was red I was going every 6 weeks to get it livened up, and had treatments each visit.

Hmm I've never actually had a treatment from a hairdresser. I'll have a chat to him. It's not bleached but it is permanent colour.

I use the John Freida shampoo for red hair which I suppose helps a bit. And I try to only wash it once a week and while it's still quite a nice, orangy-browny-red colour (sounds awful haha) I do like it to be BRIGHT.

Toastie, your hairdresser will be able to recolour the regrowth every 4 weeks, no problem. They might also put a semi through the rest to put the vibrancy back in.

red is sooooo bad for fading -ive struggled with it for years, i think all you have to do is have it done once a month. also try and slightly limit the amount of times per week you wash it, that way you may get it to last 5-6 weeks. as for those red shampoos forget them i personally have tried several of them and they do nothing otherthan colour your scalp a weird orange colour, well thats my expreience.
my hairderesser said that red fades worst of all colours cos of where it is on the colour spectrum, dont know if thats true but it sure does fade

i don't do my hair in red without a brown base now 'cause it just fades too quickly for me
