ok HELP

my bloody pain in the bum cat just smuggled a myna bird inside , i managed to get the cat off it but the friggin bird "ran" off , i trapped it as it looks injured ,but i don't know if it is or not , it is under the washing basket with a towel over it
my hubby can't come home to rescue me

what the hell do i do ??

wires will only help if it is native & i don't want to release it if it is badly injured

CRAP CRAP CRAP

If you can't handle it on your own fussy, I would leave it where it is for a while until it is calm - it may just be in a bit of shock. Is there a small room you can take it into (with the door shut), and just sit with it a while and observe it to see if he can fly? What time will hubby be home??

That's a tricky one Fussy...... Naughty Pus! I would try and keep it warm if it is injured. Perhaps put a blanket in under the basket with it and a piece of bread it can nibble on. If it is really worrying you try and take it to a vet.

i just had a look & it is very calm now
BUT i am NOT
the bloody cat keeps trying to get at it , so i have locked one cat inside :shakehead: but my other one is out & about [& he is the big predator]

hubby won't be back until dinner time , maybe 6pm

My stupid cat did that once, had two birds in a basket, tried to keep them warm, fed etc but they both died together.

jaime
03-03-2008, 02:10 PM
fussy it will be ok, just keep the cats well away and take a moment to gather your thoughts. If you are able to see if he can fly a little bit then he should be ok...

i so didn't need this today
i am shaking & in tears

it is now trying to fly around under the basket , i don't feel brave enough to get something underneath it so i can flip it & actually get it into the basket

When i worked for a wildlife rescue place, we did not do those birds either. no one will. they are far too common and they dont have the resources or the people. esp when most people are volunteer.

Vee :hugs::kissing: thank u , that meant A LOT

my dad is home :redcheeks::whistle: but was a total prick last time

ok update , i had let it go & watched it for over 1/2 hr , it couldn't fly but jumped it's way up into the trees & started eating , it fell out numerous times , i was busting for the loo so i ran in & then answered the phone , walked outside as i was talking & i couldn't find it , i walked into the neighbours yard [down the side ] in case it fell off the fence , but i couldn't find it . It so could not fly
anyway not sure what will happen now , if hubby was here i would have had him drive down the road to the bush , the bird would have a better chance there rather than close to where my cats r , so hopefully my male turns up b4 school pick up & that i find him b4 he finds the bird :shakehead:

thanks gorgeous girls :hugs: u have been wonderful :kissing::waving:

fusspot

I'm surprised its still alive, my cats surely would have done more damage :shakehead:

We had a parrot fly into our window, the poor thing was in so much shock. It was lucky we have an aivery so we put him in there for a few hours, and then left the door open for him...he flew straight out!

sometimes there's not really a great deal you can do...

my cats can be pretty stupid , she brought it in right at the start as it was squawking like hell , it went into master 2's room [& he was sleeping :shakehead:]

i feel like i shouldn't have let it out , but it seems happy & he was moving around trying to get out .
i just picked up 4 whole feathers so i am guessing that is why he isn't flying

all i can say is , thank god u guys calmed me down & thank god i had chocolate here :chuckle:

Apparently if a cat brings you a bird to you or in the house it's a representation of a gift. They are thanking you.

Yeah, it's a feline 'I love you T H I S much.' Thankfully, Puss is an indoor cat, so I don't have that issue - Fatty used to bring me 'presents' every day - and no, they weren't feathered. Or endangered. Or even native. Thank the powers.

So (I'm not a cat person, never had one) is it normal for cats to go out and kill birds?? Isn't that....bad?

loolabelle
04-03-2008, 11:57 AM
Yeah my cat does it occasuonally - he gets proud and tried to bring them inside and put them on our bed like a gift

emmy
04-03-2008, 11:57 AM
Yes its normal. And its bad. My boss has a cat that goes out and kills birds, so they have put a bell on is collar to give warning to the bird so it can get away.

Ozlicious

Yeah.......no offence but it seems kinda bad to me, that pets are going out and killing things?

emmy

Yes thats why alot of people dont like cats.
I am of the opinion that cats should be kept indoors at all times, and have done this with my pet cats.

Ozlicious

loolabelle
04-03-2008, 12:05 PM
It's just what they do - it's their nature. You can't hold it against them.

emmy
04-03-2008, 12:10 PM
Yeah it is their nature, but you can't just let them do it because its in their nature. As a cat owner people have a rseponsibility for where their cats are and what they're doing. As a cat owner, I've always thought it best to keep them inside, so I don't have to worry about being responsible for dead birds. Also cats seem to fight a bit with neighbouring cats, so I'd rather not have an injured cat, be responsible for another one or a massive vet bill.

loolabelle
04-03-2008, 12:11 PM
Seems a bit cruel to keep a cat inside only.

Ozlicious
04-03-2008, 12:13 PM
Yeah but it might be in a dog's nature to fight with other dogs and bite people, but you can't let it do that.

emmy
04-03-2008, 12:14 PM
I don't think so and alot of people don't think so. It's for their health and the health of surrounding cats and birds. Apart from my boss, all cat owners I know keep them inside. What happens if your cat got hit by a car? If you'd kept them inside, it wouldn't of happened. If I lived in the country I may keep my cat outside as well as inside, but I really don't think that cats are suited to a city living environment where I am.

I feel the same way. What are these cat things?

I agree, that you shouldn't let cats cause havoc all about the neighbourhood! I mean to be honest I don;t like Mynors, they suck. But Ithink it's horrible when they kill lovely native birds. We (as in humans, not like, us on the forum :chuckle:) brought them in to this country, so we should be responsible.

Rosie
04-03-2008, 01:38 PM
My cat is an inside cat. The vet told me that if he was outside, I would have to zinc his ears, and nose. No thanks.

My last cat was an outside cat (not my choice, the others let him out while I was away working, and he got the taste for it), and suffered horribly - he was hit by a car, and suffered horrific injuries. He was in a lot of pain, but came home to die in my arms. I felt soooooo guilty.

I hate to sound dumb but should I know what a Mynor bird is?

VeeE
04-03-2008, 01:58 PM
They're mainly Indian Mynors. There is another kind, but I can't recall the name. They are an introduced bird, and are pretty crap to be truthful. They are little, brown and yellow things. They're everywhere.

I love cats - mine's inside and he wouldn't have it any other way.

I abhor outdoor cats killing birds but you know what, you can't watch them every second (as fuss can attest to!). What you can do is limit their playground, put a bell on them and keep them entertained and well fed.

It's about being a responsible owner.

I love dogs too. My favourites are small short-hair breeds like Jack Russells. I'm not THAT into big dogs (although I don't hate them) and neither am I into fluffy/long-haired dogs (but I don't hate them either). Cats I hate.

Reptiles, I agree, they're cute in a way as long as they're not injecting venom into you.

My cat is both indoors and out. Likes to catch and eat stuf, but Ive noticed that if they are well fed they try to eat catch animals rarely. And honestly if they have a bell (mine doesnt as I cant remember the last time she caught something) the chances of them catching a bird are pretty slim. I wouldnt have the heart to keep her inside only either. cats dont usually wander to far away from their home, so unless you live in a very busy street or in the centre of the city somewhere, then why shouldnt they be in the yard sleeping in the sunshine???

Of course you can train cats. They are just very different animals to dogs. Cats are independant.
Whereas dogs are a pack animals.

I want a turtle!!

I found a turtle in the middle of the road, years ago. I made Mum pull over the car so we could take it home so it wouldn't get run over. It scared the bejeesus out of me though, I put it in a box on the back seat and it was going mental and I was kind of scared to touch it. It was one of the long-snakey-necked ones - but it was kind of cute. I half-buried a photography developing tray filled with water in the garden so it had a small pond, and let it roam free. Our cat and two dogs left it alone, and in warm weather the four of them would often be found laying stretched out, side by side, in the courtyard :chuckle:

But then it disappeared, I think it dawdled away somewhere.
