GRR it's NO fun!

I have never felt so sick before. Dr took the worlds LARGEST blood test today to try and catch it. He seems to be very strongly suspecting it as my neck (glands) are insanely sore and swollen. Under my arms, in my elbows and behind my knees. He said even if it doesnt show up this is what he thinks it is. So I'll be back off to the Dr. next Friday too!
Get blood results tomorrow!

I had it last year and it was awful, awful, awful. I ended up having 2 1/2 months of work and I am still not back to myself. I am actually HOPING I have laryngitis or tonsillitis etc atm and it's not my GF coming back.

PB - rest rest, water, rest, vegies, water rest. It is pretty easy to diagnose so you should know asap!

PB - speaking from very recent eperience, pushing through is the WORST thing you cna do - I did this and ended up having ages off work I was so sick and exhausted. YOu need to stop, get better, then slowly introduce things back.

Yes, definitely get a medical certificate and take the time off that you need. Do your reading at home if you need to, but don't push yourself. Besides, it would be irresponsible of you to spread it to other people in your class especially if you guys are doing close-contact stuff like facials etc.

I thought being off work and home at my parents interstate I would be ok doing 2 subjects - but I couldn't, so I deferred the semester - see how you go PB but you need to rest and get back into tip top shape - it ain't fun - turns out there IS such a thing as too much foxtel :shockedhair:

Yes, definitely do take it very easy. I've had glandular fever, but not exactly sure when, because my doctor didn't even bother to do a blood test during the time I was sick with a mystery virus, which knocked me out for 10 weeks. A different doctor did a blood test 10 months later, and it showed I had the antibodies to the glandular fever virus, but I could have had it anytime from 3 months prior and even up to 10 years prior to that test!!

Anyway, cutting a long story short - I now have chronic fatigue syndrome. I have never felt the same after having that virus. My doctor was too concerned about his sickness certificate audits to give me more than 3 days off work, and my work wouldn't give me leave without pay to try and recover. So I kept working (with great difficulty), and now I'm suffering big time and it sucks!! Some days I can't even sit in front of the computer for longer than 10 minutes.

So rest rest rest, and eat lots of fruit and vegies, and take supplements to boost your immune system (I'm still taking them every day). Hope you can get over this real soon - take care:hugs:

I had it too, it's the worst!

Would definitely follow loola's advice. There ain't much more you can do than rest.

Be aware too that you can have flare ups down the track, so as soon as you start feeling a bit rough take yourself to bed so it doesn't come back in full force.

Yep - and it's bloody boring, but you don't have the energy for anything else. I had a flare up recently when I started getting stressed and run down and scared the bejesus outta me!

I wasn't prepared for how nauseas I would feel (and this is from someone who experiences this alot, my nauseas tablets come everywhere with me!) and also how depressed I was.

Me too - I get bouts of nausea fairly frequently with the chronic fatigue, so figure it's all from the same thing. It's worse if you have an empty stomach, so I make myself eat something small every couple of hours. And I eat lots of crystallised ginger as well - it does help!

I had it when I was 17 in my HSC year and it was suspected again when I was 19. It still shows up in your blood for a long time after that. Since then, I have had incredibly swollen glands when I get sick. It is a constant reminder. I was off school for a whole month after trying to go back after a week.. Make sure you rest up!

I found Chinese medicine and accupuncture my saviour.

:chuckle: I'm not a fan of it either, but I find it so effective. I've got tablets to take (so you can't taste it), but for quick relief, I take the crystallised form. And also in tea form with lemongrass - it's not too bad actually!

I've used a product called Astraforte, which is based on Chinese medicine to boost my immune system (the taste was repulsive!). But with that one, you can't take it when you have a fever - it has to be after the acute infection is over. I haven't got around to trying accupuncture yet, but have heard a lot of good things about it. I've tried so many remedies already, I'm exhausted!!

Papillon Baby my heart goes out to you - I have had it too and the funny thing is, I think I had it for a long time before it came to a head and I had to go to the doctor because of the immense pain in my throat and extreme lethargy. Before that I had been feeling extremely tired and run down to the point that even my eyelids hurt from exhaustion but at the time I just thought it was uni and work stress. I agree with everyone else here - do not try to push through it you need to take stock and relax - sleep a lot, eat well, don't drink etc. :hugs:

I did exactly the same things a few years ago (about 8, while I was at uni), and I ended up developing chronic fatigue syndrome, which has taken years to get better from, and I still haven't recovered from this; now, if I push myself to hard I get really sick, so I still have to really look after myself. You really need to take the time to get better right now. Do whatever your body is telling you to do, if you need to sleep a lot and take it easy, then you have to do it. :hugs:

Wow

Talk about some horror stories... :(

Great!

I understand the sore neck and throat! MY GOODNESS. Not on the inside... but around my glands is excruciating!!! Hurts to swallow, yawn, smile and laugh! Its madness!
And the exhaustion. Just walking back up from feeding my horse- I am breathless and need to lay down. Tried to walk about doing groceries yesterday with mum and I ended up hardly being able to stand. FAR OUT. It is really scary! :( I do not like it at ALL :(

I actually suffer from Depression as well- so that is scaring me. And yes pinkcupcake- It IS hard to miss a day. I had to miss client day for DR appt on Thursday- so I missed out on practical! I do not want to be irresponsible and pass it on though and my assessor is an absolute angel and blessing and is very caring and understanding. So I will bring text home to read and some assignments to do bits of when I can. We are staring Anatomy and Physiology soon and there is NO way I wanna miss that!!!!

Bluemelon- I find accupuncture great! I see a therapist here in Tas- she does Osteopathy and a lot of other natural medicinal things too and she is FABULOUS!

I have to go back to Dr next Friday as well! HRM. I am being tested for Endometriosis too. DOUBLE PHOOEY

Sorry to dump on you girls but I just needed to vent! :(

PB - you just need to be careful - not making your health your number 1 priority is irresponsible and the damage you can do can be debilitating.

The throat passes and if anything was the easiest thing to deal with. I also lost a stack of weight which didn't help with already being exhausted but I had no energy, I am also a diabetic so I suffered majorly from this. THe aches made me crazy as well!

Accupuncture and the Chinese Herbs were a Godsend so get into that/keep with that.

Endometriosis is very treatable and if it does turn out to be what you have, it's great you know what you're takling with and there are so many things they can do for pain management and pregnancy you will have little issue. :hugs:

Hope your feeling better soon. GF is the worst. I had a friend who missed like 4 months of school because of it. Please look after yourself

feeling for you PB :kissing:

i know someone who has endometriosis and she is able to manage it and even just recently had a healthy baby so dont be too scared.

i know its scary being so ill and not being yourself - i have never had G Fever but i can only imagine how you are feeling. try and stay positive as much as you can, and try and make the most of the fact that your body needs to rest (ur body is telling you something by being so exhausted)

and remember...we will always be here to lift your spirits when you're feeling down :hugs:

Look after yourself first and foremost Pappilon Baby. You did the right thing by taking the day off as imagine how you would feel if the entire student population and or members of the public caught it from you.

Sending you lots of love and suport and big massive Pinkcupcake cuddles to get you well soon.:hugs:

Yay Pickcupcake cuddes! I LOVE HUGS!!! Thanks for those! (hugs are the BEST medicine)

I am taking things slowly! I have been reading up about GF and cannot find too much about the contagiability (is that a word LOL) other than it is spread by close, personal contact and is transmitted through saliva. I cannot say that will be happening in the class room LOL.

But I understand about when we are doing facials etc. I do NOT want to make anyone sick with this YUKKY!!!

PB, check with your doc. I think, just like chicken pox, you are actually more contagious before you get symptoms. Anything of a practical nature will need to be avoided but check with your doc about when you go back.

Oh PB - feel free to vent anytime you want. It is frustrating, so at least there are heaps of others on here that understand what you're going through.

How did you go with your blood tests - did it show up? GF is actually hard to pick up on blood tests sometimes - it can be a little bugger. I know someone who had several blood tests, and it finally showed up on the last one.

I don't think GF is considered extremely contagious but like you said, it's transmitted through saliva, and also coughing/sneezing. Also, like Luisa said, I believe you can be contagious from before you get symptoms, and even well after you recover. But your doctor should be able to assess what 'infection control' measures you need to take.

But now that you know what it is, at least you can focus on doing whatever you need to so that you can recover from this as soon as possible. I never got that chance to give my body time to recover, so probably the reason why I'm suffering still now. So rest as much as you can and try and think positive (I know it's hard sometimes!), and feel free to tell us how you feel anytime! Take care :hugs:

Hi Bluemelon-

No didn't show up this time but Dr said he is 99% sure that GF is what it is. Going back on Friday!

HRM

Yeah Dr hasnt said too much about the contagious side of things- had a Med Cert for 2 days so far!
