How often do you exfoliate? Do you you do it enough? Should you do it more often? Do you over do it?

A couple of times a week in the shower.
I'm still searching for the right exfoliant though, so if anyone has any favourites.....I have sensitive cheeks so the ones with the nuts/scratchy bits it them hurt my skin.

You should try Clarins Doux Peel (they have two exfoliants, other called Gentle Exfoliating refiner with "grains"). It is a fabulous exfoliant for sensitive skin. Dont be put off by the colour - looks like bird poop!
You apply on dry skin, press in, support the skin and literally rub off. You are then taking the dead skin cells off with the poop! It leaves skin feeling lovely and soft and not irritated by any grainy bits. Give it a go. Just dont get it in your eyebrows- doesnt come out easily!
I exfoliate with an "abrasive" exfoliant once a week and with a chemical (Alpha H AHA hydrating mask once a week. Combination is fine for my skin. One that I am quite liking at them moment is the Dr Lewinn's exfolient. It contains pineapply enzymes and smells delish. Bit tricky to fully rinse off (unfortunately like most exfoliants I have used).

My favourite exfoliant is probably 7 Day Scrub by Clinique. It's gentle enough to be used daily. I also love the Benefit Pinapple Facial Polish, it's also very gentle but smells HEAVENLY!:hearts:
I exfoliate two to three times weekly.

Couple of times a week. I can usually tell when my skin needs a bit of a scrub..I just use my Proactive Solution cleanser, it has little granular beads in it...

I exfoliate 2-3 times a week with St Ives Apricot scrub for sensitive skin. But it is still very course just not drying. Its very good and leaves yours skin nice a smooth as it should.
On the weekends i like to give a really thorough scrub while i'm in the shower waiting for my hair treatment to work because i usually go out saturday nights and my skin gets clogged with smoke, make-up and just general everyday face dirt and onces i do a scrub i'm good as new.
I've just bought the scrub for sensitive skin by Natio. so i'll let everyoen know how it goes for those out there with sensitive skin.

I use an AHA product daily from Paula's Choice. Use it at night after cleansing/toning and before moisturising. My skin is much clearer and brighter and haven't had any adverse reactions at all. If I want to use a manual exfoliant (old habits die hard), I use the Red Clay scrub from chocobonaturals.com (company based here in Sth Aust). I probably use it once a fortnight in the shower. Hope this helps.

I exfoliate about 2 times a week... & up to 3 times during the hotter months...
I've tried quite a few on the market & found most of them to rough on my skin... even ones that have claimed to be gentle have left my face very irritated... :flames:
I'm loving Ren Jojoba Microbead Purifying Scrub...it also contains essential oils of Juniper & Peppermint. It's awesome! You get a fab exfoliating action that's gentle at the same time... :hearts:

Hello princess precious! Please, please, please go easy on the abrasive scrubs. Yes they do feel wonderful and extra cleaning but seriously you only need to exfoliate once or twice a week. After you go out, why not use a deep cleansing mask instead of going crazy with a scrub?!! Will certainly give your skin a vaccum! As your scrub contains "bits" these can actually scratch the skin so I am happy that you are trying a more gentle one. I was once told that an old face washer was ample exfoliation for your skin!

Hey fusspot!
For those who have not tried the Clarins Doux Peeling and have sensitive skin, definitely give this one a go. No granules (careful they do make the Gentle Exfoliating Refiner which has granules) and relies on its texture to grab on to dead skin cells and you literally rub them away.
Although the Dr Lewins's one is very good (relies on pineapple enzymes as well as grains) it is a particularly hard one to rinse off!

I chemically exfoliate (with Alpha H glycolic mask) once a week. It lasts for ages! Also use AHA's daily so only use physical exfoliant once a week too.
I used to use the Christian Dior one but have found two reliable cheapies that I would recommend. One was the old Ponds scrub, now they have been taken over by Dove, have not tried theirs yet. Out of all the scrubs I have used, was amazed that this one's grains disolved as you rinsed them away - very impressed. Dove has kept to many old Ponds formulas so see how you go. Another one I have been happy with is the Loreal Refinish, a kind of mild dermabrasion kit. Dont really like the moist but the exfoliant is great. You do need to remember to have damp skin first and only a pea size on each cheek, forehead and chin (I also do neck gently). Rub in very gentle motions for only 2 mins an area max.

I haven't needed to exfoliate as much now that I have my delectable Ultraceuticals cleansers. However I do still use Alpha-H Microcleanse once during the week, and every two weeks I use the Philosophy Microdelivery Peel (a bit of a misleading title though, it's pretty tame). I prefer very small granules; find the really grainy exfoliants too harsh...

I exfoliate about once or twice a week. I used to do it more but my beauty therapist said to use masks more often and to exfoliate less, which I have done with good results.
A cheapie recommendation is the Johnson's PH 5.5 gentle scrub in the pink tube. You only need the tinest amount but it's very gentle and leaves your skin feeling great.

I exfoliate two or three times per weeks using scrubs. I am in love with Alpha-H Microcleanse which I use twice a weeks, I love Alpha-H's glycolic Mask but if I want something less active I use:
Dermalogica skin prep scrub
Clinique 7 day scrub
Clarins Gentle Exfoliating Refiner
Benefit Pineapple Facial Polish
Or one of the other 50 I have in my cupboard!!

I exfoliate once, maybe twice a week, with a chemical exfoliant from Pevonia. I also use actives day and night as part of my routine which exfoliate lightly every day. The Pevonia is great for me, and the only one I will need to use with my skincare as it is right now. it just takes a bit more off, and leaves my skin just a tad smoother. I have never really liked the feeling of scrubs, so I avoid them for the moment...:ashamed:

I haven't tried this tim-tam, but when I was blonde i would crush an aspirin into my shampoo and it did a great job of gently getting rid of product build up!! I read that Jen Aniston does it to counteract brassiness. Sometimes I felt that clarifying shampoos didn't do the best job but something in the fizziness of the aspirin really seemed to work.

I'm currently trialling the U/C Clear Gel exfoliate that I got as a GWP...
When I first started using it, I had a major breakout, & I freaked out as I thougth it was due the AHA & BHAs in the product... but since have realised my breakout was due to stress & unfortunately conicided with the new use of the product...
I use it twice a week & it's great!

If anyone's interested in a 'natural' product Lush Angels on Bare Skin is nice. Primary ingredient is Kaolin clay which is used in many commercial purifying masks; also has finely ground almonds, lavender and other good things. It's kind of like a paste that you mix with a bit of water, so you can make it last. Highly recommended.

I have 2 exfoliants atm. One is Md Formulations (which I love love love!!) scrub. Its on its last legs so I bought the Ultraceuticals Exfoliating Gel. Its nice and gentle. I would recommend this for anyone who has a bit of a sensative skin. I generally only remember to do it once maybe twice max a week. The Md scrub is suuuper intensive so I find once a week is quite enough.
On top of that I have the Dermalogica Microfoliant. Its a gentle rice bran enzyme based powder that I mix in wet hand to a paste. I use it whenever Im tempted to exfoliate more than 1-2 a week. Its only removing about 1 or 2 layers ONLY!! Super gentle huh!! And its great for my skin after I have a micro or a peel till I can use my normal exfoliant
I also love to have in salon exfoliaton treatments like Peels (I get Ultraceuticals 50% peel normally) and Microdermabraion whoch has just saved my skin after a bout of horrible hormonal acne. No red marks or scars now thanks to it and Vit C.
I also love the Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant. Its a chemical exfoliant that have pinapple and papya in it (which seems to be the standard "chemical exfoliant ingredients" now days. I see more and more of them) You dont buff this one off. Just 10mins as a mask and your done. I like this one in winter when I get a bit direr.
Hahahah well looks like another essay for The_Beauty_Addict. I write as I would speak which I think is my problem :ashamed: :chuckle: :glee:  o well :yellow:

I've tried an asprin mask which is slightly different to a scrub - I disolved some asprin in milk, then added some honey before applying it to my face. It smelt beautiful and worked really well. The asprin is salicylic acid, the milk has lactic acid in it and the honey is a natural antibacterial and anti-oxidant if I recall correctly, so it's more a chemical mask than a scub. I have never tried it in a cleanser before though....
The only reason I dont do it anymore is just that I can't be bothered. However, it is an inexpensive and brilliant mask and you can ue it every day,or every other day if you want. I left mine on for about five minutes usually.

Ive just had a lightbulb moment!!!! Ive been wondering why after applying my new exfoliant and clay mask at night my skin is red and sensitive in the morning? Derrrrr - My exfoliant must be way to coarse for my skin!!! It feels like Im rubbing sand into my face and I thought because it felt so smooth it was doing a terrific job - will lay off it and see how I go. Only problem is I now need to purchase another exfoliant?????

Hi Racky!
Firstly you may want to separate the use of these two. I feel your scrub might be too much on the harsh side. These ones typically use nut/kernal granules which are not spherical so the can actually scratch the skin.
Also, despite the clay mask being quite soothing, unless you have oily/acne skin, try cutting down to once a week for the moment.
Hope skin is clearing up, let us know how you go.:waving:

I'm not sure if this is generally "correct" or not, but I find it way more effective to exfoliate for longer, using very gentle pressure (eg do it softly for longer, not hard for a short amount of time). Somehow it just works better for me.

Since joining the forum I have totally changed my opinion on exfoliating. Prior to joining here I wouldn't use a scrub unless it was really harsh and scratchy. I use to think it was good if my skin was a bit red after exfoliating. Now I a much more of a gentle polishing girl and have given my harsh scrubs the boot in favour of things like Microcleanse by Alpha-H and Dermalogica's Gentle Cream Exfolient which are probably a bit more active but also gentle at the same time.

Interesting question BJP. You need to think about the other types of exfoliating you are doing, whether it be with a chemical (AHA or BHA) product and even what you use to remove cleansers and masks like a flannel or cloth. Even wiping your face with a towel! These are ALL types of exfoliation. Exfoliation does reveal new skin and increase cell turnover and although making it more receptive to treatment products, can have cause for sensitivity. See how you go xo

I am not a beauty therapist BPJ but I don't think it would hurt to use an exfoliant twice a week in addition to your cleanser with exfoliating beads. Your skin will certainly let you know if it doesn't like it and if this occurs you can perhaps stop or just do it once a week. Everyone's skin is different and has different tollerance levels it's just a matter of finding what works for you.
I exfoliate every second day now. My skin wouldn't have tolerated this 12 months ago but by using more active skincare (cobtaining aha's etc) over the last 6 months my skin reacts brilliantly to the regular exfoliation. I must admit that once a week I will use a scrub containing glycolic acid and the other times I will use a more gentle scrub such as Dermalogica's skin prep scrub or Ole Henriksens New Beginnings scrub.
So I think you just have to find out what your skin likes and doesn't like. Hope this doesn't confuse the issue too much. Perhaps this would be a good one for Allison or Luisa Brown!

I would be careful.Your body is exfoliating itself. I would trim the dead skin with little cuticle scissors. I had a peel recently and had he same thing happen to me. It lasts a day or two then should stop. If you were to give in I would go very gently. Good luck and let us know how u go.
Ps I know its really hard not to pull at the skin but try and resist as it could scar or mark as pigmentation and u'd be back to square one. If find that a nice moisturising cream (I used Ultraceuticals Ultra Moisture cream) was great to help to moisten the flaky bits and make them appear less :hearts:

I use alpha H micro cleanse on my face weekly and Eleusian body exfoliant weekly. This works perfectly for me. :hearts:

I would so appreciate some advice on this from all the lovely experts on this forum! I've just started using a prescription Retin-A cream for acne, and my chin is flaking like mad, which only makes my skin look worse! Probably not a good idea to do anymore. I have a friend in the States who recenlty went through Obagi (a peel kinda thing) who had the flaking, and she was strongly advised not to exfoliate, no matter how batty it drove her, for fear of doing damage.

Thanks for the advice! I was a bit naughty then, coz I did use Alpha-H Micro Cleanse last night - very gently - but my skin seems to be appreciating it this morning! Will try to be good from now on...:o

I use my UC Exfoliating Gel 3 times a week. Once a week I use my Alpha-H 15% Glycolic Hydrating Mask - that's like a chemical exfoliant isn't it????

I just read in a magazine, that when using a scrub with glycolic acid in it you should leave it on yours skin for 5 min so it can do its job. Does anybody do this? I have just started using Alpha-H mircleanse, but only massage it into my skin for a min or 2....

This is a good technique if you have the time as by rinsing it off almost immediately you may not be utilising the full benefits of the product. That said, if you are using other AHA based products, I wouldnt worry too much, two mins is fine.
