View Full Version : What sub-species of Beautyista are you?

I got to thinking about the different types of beautyista, and I threw together this list of my thoughts!! Where do you fit in??

Perfumistas – “all day long I dream about scent”. She plans what she’ll wear (fragrance-wise of course) the next day and thinks just as carefully about matching her fragrance to her outfit as she does her shoes or bag. She is a collector of fragrances and loves everything about them – the bottles, the history of the houses, the ritual of perfume. She is interested in other aspects of beauty but scent is first and foremost on her mind. Her weakness is niche and boutique perfume, of course!

Skincare Sisters – This is your super-savvy girl who knows all there is to know about perfecting her skin. She’s taken skincare beyond simple cleansing, toning and moisturising. She’s on an eternal search for more concentrated serums, better delivery systems, and stabilized antioxidants. She may not wear much makeup and she might wear her hair in a pony every day, but that’s ok because she knows that her beautiful glowing skin speaks for itself. Her main weakness? She has 15 cleansers!

Bath and Body Babes – This lovely gal doesn’t take the whole beauty thing too seriously. Yeah she takes care of it all, she has her share of cleansers, moisturisers and treatments, but really she loves the fun and variety offered by bath and body. Her shower is a veritable playground of bottles with all kinds of scents and textures. She loves the variety of a different shower gel and lotion every day. She sticks with what works on her face but she loves to experiment below the neck! She goes weak at the knees for luscious body scrubs and butters.

Haircare Heroines – This beautyista knows it is all about the hair, baby! She’s kept the skincare and bodycare under control, but her credit card gets its workout at her top-end salon. She changes her hair with the seasons and always looks after it with top-notch products. She’d never leave the house without blowdrying and is always keen to update her look with a fringe or some foils. We all know what she’s weak for – every time a new GHD is released, she’s already on the waiting list.

Makeup Mavens – While this chick loves taking care of her hair and skin, nothing beats the thrill of a new makeup purchase. She just loves how blush makes her face come alive and liner makes her eyes pop. She adores the new possibilities that makeup presents every day. She has a healthy respect for the simple, polished nude look, but has a real soft spot for an emerald-lined eye or a fuchsia lip. She already has the cult makeup products like NARS Orgasm, so her weakness is new-release limited edition colour stories!

Fashionistas – These lovely ladies know that beauty is part of one’s overall appearance. They are dedicated to taking care of their hair, skin and nails, and they love their makeup, but it’s all part of a whole look and fashion is the main part! They love shopping for clothes and shoes just as much as skincare or cosmetics, and they match their makeup to their outfit and not vice-versa. They only need one or two gold highlighters, but they understand that one can never have too many pairs of gold heels! Her weakness? Well, Carrie would approve – shoes, of course.

Now Come On how can I choose just one!!

Ok so the perfume thing is my thing and I love my makeup but above all if I had to choose I think I would choose skin care over everything else. I am one of those suckers who has three GHD hair straighteners but hey I buy them for the limited Ed colours they come in. Oh and how I love my Bath and body products! I am just a freak!

We should all try and do each other!

Example:

Luisa Brown is a skin care queen.

Miss Rbb is heavily into makeup at present

Oz is definitely a bath and body girl on the endless quest to find the right products, candles etc

Is there such thing as a blush-ista? :chuckle: No... I am defiantely a make-up maven at heart, with a wee bit o' bath and body for good measure!

Fun thread Oz!!

I think I'm going to be the odd one out here, because I only fit into the Makeup Maven category!

I am really a shocker when it comes to the fashion stakes. I can't get the clothes that I like and are fashionable to look good on me. So I tend to focus on my makeup & the clothes, well........:shakehead: The fashion side suffers greatly. I actually hate shopping for clothes and shoes :redcheeks: I would rather pay for a fashion stylist to come over & take a look at what I've got, then go out and get me some new clothes!

Maybe it's just because of the boring and limited ranges we have here in Adelaide........I don't know :ashamed:

I'm with those NON-fashionistas who hate clothes shopping. I like to look nice but I really don't enjoy shopping for clothes or even shoes! If I find something I like while I'm out, then fine, but I certainly don't enjoy a day of clothes shopping. Jewellery I like, but it still pales in comparison to shopping for product!

By the way did anyone notice Rebecca Morris-Wiliams has been on to hear our complaints re becca counters.

Im NOT sure I fit into any one specified category.

1. Skincare - I try to maintain a simple yet effective routine. I take pride in looking after my skin and consider this one of my top prorities regarding my body.

2. Bath/Body - I have found what I like i.e I have my favourite shower gel! and enjoy the simplicity and dynamic nature of organics/natural brands. Therefore either skincare or body I'm often researching or looking out for a quality product that I can use. (but neither skincare or body do I have many products, normally one of each sometimes a 2nd).

3. I like clothes, good quality, classic, comfortable yet flattering clothes. I don't own any high end or major brands. I like my favourite shops (jeanswest, sussan and suzanne grae) and make an effort to buy a couple of new pieces each season. I like shoes - like pieere fontaine or espirit, hand bags - favourites are from portmans or dotti and some kinds of jewellery particularly earrings, sports girl had some lovely ones last year, when I was in melbourne.

4. Hair, Im so lazy with my hair I shampoo and condition (like skincare and body, its all about natural/organics, avioding as many chemicals as possible). I comb my hair and let it dry on its own. I like to have my hair coloured now and again but Im not so consumed by this anymore!!! personally I think that this did more damage than good.

5. Perfume I have my HG's. like to have a sniff in the perfume aisles at duty free when I go on holidays each year but I don't normally buy. I wear my fragrances daily. Doesn't matter what I am wearing or if its day or night - I pick/like fragrances that suit me and lifestyle.

6. Makeup - never got a kick out of buying makeup. I have one lipstick!

Oh I like the sound of that - correct me if I am wrong but you prefer, clean, modern styles, right? IE cannot do vintage, like clean lines, basic but well-made shapes.

Do you like black or colour ? Prints? Skinny or wide leg pants? Boots, flats, heels?

What are your favourite items in your wardrobe currently and why?

Then I can begin my secret dream of being a fashion stylist!

Yeah pretty much - modern, chic, classic but with a bit of a twist, so a wee bit of vintage can work in well, especially something on top. I like to be feminine but not too girly, sexy but not slutty, classic and chic but not boring and old. I am a classic hourglass shape and prefer things to be fitted so this flatters and otherwise I look pregnant in a sack.

I love both black and colours, prints in moderation but NO ANIMAL PRINT. NADA. I am curvy 10/12 so skinny jeans definitely don't work, but something fitted and flattering, dark jeans, NO LEGGINGS. Flats, boots and heels are all good!

I am trying to think of people so you have an idea - ummm... how Rachel was in "Friends" and Jennifer Aniston in general but done a bit younger, as I am only 25.

And I have issues in general (no jokes you other girls!) with workwear - I work in a corporate office of a large company but we don't need to be suited up at all - we can be creative provided it's professional.

And outside of work I just have NO CLUE - shopping on the weekend, dinner, movies and lunches, dates, going out, vegging, gym...eeee!

I am a collage queen and am trying to go through magazines to get an idea but hopefully this helps with ideas for outfits or shops or websites.

You rock!!! :hugs:

Do you want a winter work wardrobe or 'play' wardrobe?

Let me see...do you like the current high-waist trends? I love it but it can be easy to look like every other office girl if you don't do it in a stylish enough way - but going from the couple of photos I saw of you on Adore a while ago, you look naturally sleek and classy. . I think the trick is to buy things in interesting and good-quality fabrics - ie pure wool or a subtle sateen. Nothing that creases or doesn't hold its shape. Anyway, if you do like high waists, Saba have some great basic skirts out for winter. For work, you could go a basic black or deep, indigo/purple skirt with opaque tights and pumps or black boots. I think you have mentioned liking pencil skirts or is that me? These never go out of fashion - and Saba have some great ones. Country Road's winter collection also has some gorgeous skirts.

Now, I know this is quite traditional office attire but I am loving classic, crisp button-up shirts at the moment. These can be very sexy and stylish if you buy ones that are well-fitted and hug your torso just enough to show off your curves. Marcs used to have some lovely ones - not sure if they still do. David Jones has a line called Zambelli Donna which I just love. You could go classic white tucked into say a red skirt or a deep olive green skirt, or opt for a gem-colour with a black skirt like red or emerald green - do you like green? These shirts look so sexy if the sleeves are rolled up just so and the top few buttons are left undone.

Also try shirt dresses and tailored, straight-leg pants with high-heel ankle boots. There are heaps of gorgeous feminine blouses out there at the moment - look for high-quality things in silk (or silk-appearence), floaty chiffon type fabrics or with fine details like lace or embroidery. Ladakah do some great, affordable blouses like this. Harder to find but so nice are shell-tops or fitted boat-necks. There is a line called Stella in Myer that do some nice ones. Of course you can't go past turtle-necks (cute with short sleeves), striped or plain-coloured tees in nice fabrics (ie no ribbed cotton that stretches after a few washes).

Now, I am the queen of the camisole and these are great for work - under a cropped or fitted jacket, or if it is warmer, over a fitted tank-top or singlet so it looks more structured and less 'too sexy for work'. A camisole with dark jeans and boots or jeans and metallic strappy sandals also looks divine. Or with nice trousers. Witchery do nice camisoles and I think I have told you this before but go to the lingerie section of DJs or Myer - Elle MacPerson intimates so amazing ones. Do you like waist-coats? They have sort of been done before but if you go for a tweed or black wool one over a satin or silk shirt they look timeless and gorgeous. I guess it is all about mixing interesting fabrics so you never look boring or tone-on-tone. All black of course looks classic but to make it more interesting, wear a matte shirt with a satin skirt and textured black tights. Or vice-versa - satin or soft, billowy top with a wool skirt. Or wear all black - black alice-band, black fitted top, black tights and shoes with a bright skirt. If you go all black you can also really play with accessories - especially vintage. Like big, old-fashioned chandelier earrings, or a long vintage necklace (lockets, costume-pendants, old beads etc.) Or all black and a bright belt or a caramel/camel belt in an interesting pattern (plaited, hole-punched etc). I personally like wearing thick ribbons or the sashes from old satin dressing-gowns threaded through more masculine pants and tied in a bow (in place of a belt.) This also works with a skirt or shirt-dress - replace the belt or tie that comes with the dress and use a ribbon in the same colour or a neutral color (brown, black, cream, caramel) or a completely contrasting colour.

Is this helpful at all, loola, or just boring suggestions?! Do let me know what appeals/doesn't appeal to you, and then we can begin phase two...

Meanwhile I will do some more research and get back to you :)

LOL but if I HAD to choose just one- I would say bath and body! Although I do pay special attention to my skin care and hair- I tend to sometimes let it all slip into relax mode a little too often! I am not a fan of makeup:redcheeks:!

So all in all I will make a fab Beauty Therapist- as I remeber a comment Nerrida (assessor) said recently " when your nails are lacking luster, when your feet hurt and your lashes need tinting- THAT'S when you KNOW you're a Beauty Therapist" LOL as you just dont have the time!!!:chuckle:

I'm such a loser - I had to read this a few times to soak it all in, stupid sick brain! :chuckle:

That is so awesome though, before I reply Saph - you are my Idol! :hugs:

I am after both work and play - I think a struggle a touch more with play.

High waists actually suit me incredibly well - I tried one on at Cue and it was like they were designed for me, but as you said, I don't want to look like all the other generic office girls. I love pencil skirts and I have a few that also have a fish tail which suit me wonderuflly as well - my only issue is with skirts they need to be at my knee - I can't do above the knee as I have bad legs. I love those ideas!

Oh, I love the shirts! I want some great ones, cute but sexy and stylish ones, maybe some with stripes - Marcs have just bought out a few this season and will definitely check out these Zambelle Donna - the few shirts I own now I tend to wear rolled up to my elbow and buttons undone and I LOVE the look - so we're on the same page! The ones I currently have I think aren't long enough though which is why I have stopped wearing them, oe cut quite right. but now I have some places to check to get some that's an awesome option. Turtle necks are out - we are not friends, my body no like :shakehead: heheh. LOVE GREEN! Espeially as I have green eyes.

I have two 100% silk tops (one Saba, one David Lawerance) which I thought I might have to retire for Winter, but I figure paired with pencil skirt, tights and heels, and also a coat and scarfe, I am fine outside and inside the heating is on so I won't freeze.

You have definitely hit the nail on the head with the stuff i want and appeals - interesting fabrics and chic and sexy but classic. I think I need to get me some bows as well!

I have got a black Saba trench on layby ready for winter, and would love like a tweed or gray fitted waist coat I could weat instead of this, say with jeans or a skirt or just so I'm not wearing the same every day. And Vintage earrings and headbands I love and realy just need to go on a hunt and start replenishing my supplies.

I guess one thing in my favour is like most chicks, I don't get as cold as them and am fairly warm (M calls me the human heater and doesn't need an electric blanket as he's got me) so light layers are always a better option.

You are FABULOUSLY BRILLIANT at this!! :worship:

:worship:

Yay! I was going to suggest Cue for skirts too, as well as trench coats. I really want a tweed fitted jacket as well - in Perth the choice for winter coats/jackets is not so high as the winters are quite mild here.

Maybe try Piccadilly Circus in Carlton for some jackets? They have a huge range - some are quite old-fashioned but they do have classics too. It is on Alexandra Parade, a bit further west from that Irish pun with the turret. I love Marcs and I so miss it in WA - not a single store here and they do not sell online! When I lived in Melbourne Marcs was my favourite place for basic, good quality pieces.

In Myer the other day the SA for Pleasure State was wearing a gorgeous old gold camisole underneath a really structured black jacket - almost tuxedo style but more everyday friendly. It looked amazing. Pleasure State also have beautiful camisoles, by the way. Not to mention the lingerie! I suppose you could even wear nice slips tucked into skirts so they appear as a top...I have also been watching dvds of the cool Bristish grifter show Hustle and the character Stacie Monroe always wears buttoned shirts and she looks so chic. She was in an amazing emerald green one in the last episode I watched - I covet it!

Re 'play' clothes, how relaxed do you like to be? I saw some nice jeans by Bettina Liano in a Myer catalogue the other day, and the latest edition of Russh has a denim special with a pair I particularly want by Maise.

Thanks for your vote of confidence too, Loola :hugs: I've always dreamed of opening my own niche designer and vintage store but methinks I would keep most of the stuff for myself! :redcheeks:

I used to walk by there often on my walk from Clifton Hill to Melbourne Uni. I love Carlton and North Carlton - would love to live there one day. :)

Ahhh - I was trying to tell a friend about that place the other day but I kept calling it Chelsea :chuckle: Then I got confused and gave up and figured I'd ask Luisa again.

I would definitely be a customer Saph - guarenteed business!

That emerald green top sounds right up my alley!

I want to be comfy but chic playwise - if that makes sense - not just any old jeans anda top, but just, put together and well fitting and have other people be like, she looks great, and inspire them. Myer and DJ's lingerie department are on my list for a layby for some cami's and slips (great tip!) - and paired with some cute cardi's then maybe? I always feel like I look like a bag lady in cardi's for some reason, I think i've been getting the wrong ones.

Chelsea - :chuckle:

For me cardies have to be little and shrunken to work or I too feel like nanna. I know those big wrap-around coat-type ones are popular too but they are not me - though they look so sweet and cosy! Wrap tops are another option...

Yeah - I think because there are 2 tiny movie theatres in Adelaide called the Picadilly and the Chelsea and well - who knows what I was thinking!

Yes! That's what I find! Those long ones don't work on me either - they make me look bigger than I actually am.

I assme you would be right into Dermalogica and perhaps a bit of Thalgo considering you are at Pappilon doing your diploma. A bit sad that they only give their students 10% off their products though.

yup yup!

Starting our Dermalogica days soon!!! Cannot wait:glee:

I was flicking through March Marie Claire in a cafe today and they have a lot if that classic/polished look in there - perhaps worth a look for inspiration. I'm dying to get a pair of lace up ankle boots - ones that sit above the ankle rather than really low ones - sort of a modern take on Victorian dress boots. They are everywhere in Paris (according to Style.com anyway). :)

I've decided to happily settle into my Bath/Body obsession. As much as I really love skincare (and I do), for me it's so much about scent, texture and sensation. Bath and Body is the best way to explore that, rather than to chop and change skincare all the time!

I have this (loooove Marie Claire) but haven't read it properly yet - I can't wait to check it out and rip out sides for my WInter list!

I think I am Makeup, Fashion, with a bit of hair thrown in - considering one of my friends' nicknames for me is "Oi, you with the hair!"

I feel the same way. I am happy to stick to a skincare routine that works, but there are just too many great smells out there to go past in the world of Bath and Body.

Yes, this is so me! Don't get me wrong, I loooove skincare, but my skin doesn't respond well to being stuffed around. It's bath and body for me, baby!

I've been thinking (never good) and have decided that Bath & Body is probably more my category - I just want to smell good, and I can get that with creams/lotions etc, as well as having soft skin. So yeah, B&B first, Perfume second, and everything else all together after that. But Fashion is the last thing.

I love skincare and B&B stuff but I also make my own clothes and love op-shop shopping and fashion. So I don't know.

I have one lipstick!

that was my original list - but these days I feel a like ....

1. I'm getting into more bath/body products - I may not have a lot of products at the moment but I'm loving buying soaps at the moment and I really prefer to use a beautiful cream instead of perfume. I have a wishlist of body products (in my head) I want to gradually buy/collect for everyday use (dr hauschka, Perfect Potion, REN, Trilogy).

2. Clothes, My small wardrobe and set of drawers is quite plentifull at the moment, although I could do more work on exercising my figure to go down a couple of sizes, I thought the other night, I've got quite a good wardrobe, quite simple but in my mind it is stylish. I'm having lots of fun accessorising my outfits with winter scarfs and earrings. Plus my cool new winter boots (add to my shoe collection)

3.Skincare I've found pretty much at the moment or the last 12 months what I like, I'm not really experimenting these days I am happy with my current skin condition, so its a mixture of high end: Dr Hauschka, otherwise I've had a lot of success with Lush Cleansers, Weleda Moisture Creams, and my HG's like clinique sunscreen. I've tried the odd product out but I'm less motivated as my skin is in good shape. I am enjoying Avalon Organics (mid range price range, lovely to use, so its a keeper I think)

4. & 5. Perfume and Makeup - totally turned off by perfume and well I never use makeup! - need I say more.
