View Full Version : HELP! I have an addiction to perfume that I can't control!

It started last year when my favourite fragrance finally ran out. I had been wearing this fragrance for years and years and didn't really care about perfume that much. I decided to find something new to wear - choose that ONE perfume & turn it into my new favourite.

Well, that ONE perfume turned into 2, then 3, then 4, then 5, then 6 etc - the Dam walls opened and won't close!

It's like a high when I get a new perfume & I know I have some very nice ones in my collection but I can't stop looking... and when I see a bargain it's hard to say no! I've even started to look at mens perfumes for my OH.

Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do? Maybe we can start an Adore Beauty Perfume Addiction Support Group.... LOL

There are a lot of us here with that 'problem' - but we don't call it that - we call it a passion.:whipcrack:

:chuckle: Kellstar, you are among friends here!

I think Miss Pinkcupcake has our perfume queen title - more than 400 fragrances and a special climate-controlled cabinet. She is a true connoisseur!

Honey my addiction has been getting worse for years. I now have well over 500 and frankly I love it! If it's your passion and you can afford to do it then don't feel guilty just enjoy the rush! However if you aren't able to afford it and you still keep buying that might be a problem.

I'm not stealing old ladies pension checks or spending the food money yet... LOL.... but it's so hard to stop once you've started! I like the variety & not being stuck in a rut... it's also finding a bargain as well... that is half of the achievement.

Over 500??!! Wow, no wonder you have a climate controlled cabinet - you don't just have perfume, you have investments to protect......thanks for the pinkcupcake, & everyone else too... I will have to get my OH to read this thread! heeheehee!

There seems to be a thing in perfume-loving online communities where it's really encouraged to get your hands on as many as you can. Perfumistas are a particularly addiction-prone sub-species of Beautyista!

Hi i'm a noobie to this forum, however have browsed it many times! (i probably registered ages ago too and forgot my username/password)

Anywho, i too am a perfume addict! My boyfriend rolls his eyes upon hearing that i've acquired a new one...

I cen't help it, so many to choose from, and once in a while i'll fall in love with a fragrance, so then eventually i end up getting it!

I am trying to 'downsize' my collection, by getting smaller bottles, alas perfume companies make the 100mL bottle so much worthwhile, damnit.

I've often thought about trading decants of my perfume collection, or even selling off decants, as i have yet to finish a 100mL bottle. The closest i've come is by wearing the same perfume everyday in highschool for a while, i went through a 50mL bottle and have a tiny bit left in a 30mL bottle...

i never buy 100ml bottles, all mine are 30 or 50 ml (or smaller) because i actually eventually go through them and can justify trying new ones..... plus i have short attention span and get bored of even my favourite ones and so need a few on rotation..... plus different scents suit different season.... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: this isn't helping is it ;)

Here's my theory:

If you really like a perfume start off with a 30 or 50ml bottle. If you are still madly in love with it when It runs out go and buy the 100ml.

I rarely buy the 100ml but if something just blows me out and I love it beyond words then I will get the 100ml.

The thing with perfume is that there is forever new fragrances being launched and if like me you tend to move on and leave the old and go for the new then really it does make sense to buy the smaller bottles.

I occassionally give bottles away if I really don't like them and know of someone that will get enjoyment out of it. I am very funny about my fragrances. I have to love both the scent and the bottle to keep it. If the scents great but the bottle doesn't float my boat or vice versa then it usually ends up in my cupboard hidden and forgotten about and therefore it really defeats the purpose of having it in the first place.

I'd also buy the largest available in those scents that don't last (eg Philosophy or Jo Malone fragrances) because I'd spritz five or six sprays on in the morning and then re-apply throughout the day.

I do this regardless of how long they last, I have a paranoia about smelling!

Yes I tend to carry my fragrance with me in my bag and re-apply once or twice throughout the day. Always gotta smell good!

lipglossaddict, welcome to Adore Beauty Perfume Addicts!

I must say, re the smaller sizes, I find that when it comes to most perfumes, the price difference between each size points you towards getting the bigger amount. Eg, when my fave perfume was on sale the 50ml was $40 & the 100ml was $59, so for $19 extra I got twice the amount. Obviously this is so you spend more - and more often than not it works with me - if the price difference is not great I will go for the bigger size.

I have found that when it comes to perfumes like Thierry Mugler's Angel for instance, a smaller bottle (eg 10ml) can be up to $126. I'm guessing that this is due to it being a special edition, purse size & also refillable but still - I'd rather just buy the 100ml for $20 more dollars or so.
