I have a feeling this is a question for Kate!! Ohhhhhh Kate, Goddess of Tan, where art thou?
OK here's the dealy-o. I have quite oily skin, live in hot weather, and like most of us, wear sunscreen and makeup every day. I've also been fake tanning for the past few weeks. Now, while I do the fake tanning thing every year, I don't consider myself an expert, so I have a problem I need help with.
How do we take care of our deep cleansing and exfoliation needs, while maintaining the fake tan on our face? I am noticing unusual congestion along my jawline lately, and I'm pretty sure it's because I have cut down on the AHA and BHA use, and also on physical exfoliation. I'm using a grainy scrub about twice a week and a cleanser with salicylic acid about 2-3 times a week (whereas normally I would have used it daily). I'm also doing a clay masque 1-2 times a week. But I'm still finding that my skin is looking and feeling a bit too congested!! I think the congestion is in part due to the mineral oil content of the fake tan I have been using (u/c Ultra Self Tan - it does say it's suitable for face!), so I will probably switch to using this on my body and using another one on my face.
So, should I up the exfoliation and just resign myself to tanning almost every day?? What do we think??

Oz this is exactly why i don't bother , especially now as i use UC ests , & diminish & i LOVE to exfoliate , so hard , such a dilemma , does all this mean u have to 'fake tan' more often ???
all too confusing for me

PS I sort of feel the same way, but then I see pics of me and I just look like this pale white person with bronzed areas. And I remember reading once to use bronzer like you use blush, to add warmth to the face (ie not to colour it)! Ugh so confusing!

Yea i know what you mean, maybe try a liquid bronzer before foundation..?????????
I find the trick is to have your neck & decollatage nice and fake tanned (model co spray tan in a can is perfect for this job) then once you bronze your face it matches everything else :chuckle:

See I like that in theory and I do do it to a degree... but I don't like it when I'm walking round the house with a casper face and tanned neck/body! I feel ridiculous! What if someone comes to the door - they'll be like, ummm WHAT is she doing!?!! :shakehead:

i also have found a lot of congestion on my nose and my chin is a huge oil slick now but it wasn't before i started using a self tanner for the face. Its a hard decision but i think i'd rather clear skin than brown oily skin. I might start using it every 2nd day instead of dailly.

I think I might have to start scrutinising the ingredients lists on fake tan really closely.

And what is it you need to avoid? I really need to start paying more attention to ingredients...

But I wear sunscreen everyday and can still get a tan? It's not like I purposely go and lay down and want to get a sun tan. I just plan in the water and walk out brown :( I'm not a bad person!!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Do you have olive skin? Lucky girl!
(Just want to make sure you wear sunscreen. Tanning scares the crap out of me - too many melanoma scares in my family!)

No Trash!!! A tan is a scar on your skin! I would never ever sit out in the sun, I don't want to end up as a sun-damaged leathery handbag!
Celeste, the main ingredient I think I have to avoid on a facial tanner is mineral oil. It's probably fine for body use, and probably ok also if you have drier skin, but my skin is oily and I think mineral oil just sits on the surface and clogs it. Gross.
