I was just wondering, do you ever think about total fragrance impact? If you're using a specific fragrance, do you use as many unscented products as possible so it really shines? Do you match your other products to suit your specific fragrance? I hope I'm making sense here lol! Sometimes I think I shouldn't even bother finding a fragrance to suit me when I have body and hair products that would overpower it anyway. Thoughts?

I often choose unscented lotions because of always wearing scent. I have a few very nice creams that have strong scents, one of the brands is great but I rarely wear it because I can smell it all day and it interferes with my perfume. Hair, I have been using a lot of Lush of late and that scent doesn't seem to linger. I wear unscented deoderant, I can't stand putting on a floral deoderant and smelling that with my perfume. For me it's aaaaaaaaaaallllllll about the perfume, lol.

I actually take the opposing view. My approach to perfume (much as I love and adore it as an art form) is that I want people to notice me, not my perfume. I want them to think "she smells beautiful", not "her perfume smells beautiful". So it actually doesn't bother me if my scented body and hair products mingle with my perfume. I like the idea of all the smells forming one scent that people will associate with me. I figure that my body lotions, shampoos, hand creams etc all smell lovely so I have no problem with them intermingling with my fragrance. And the fragrances I wear tend to be quite fresh and light, not too demanding, so there is no horrific clashing going on (I hope).

Depends on the day. I can go either way, depending on my mood at the time.

Not too fussed - I'm like Rosie, depends on the day and on my mood. If I've used a really lovely scented soap or body wash I probably won't wear perfume. But sometimes it's fun to layer and mingle, so you just smell so good you can't figure out what it was that contributed!

i don't worry on a day to day basis but for a night out i would be more selective

Thanks for the replies! It's interesting to see a bit of variety. It seems like every beauty article I read says to layer so that the scent of the perfume lasts. I do like the idea of everything mingling and adding mystery though.

When i think of my "scent memories" associated with my Mum or grandmothers, it's not only their perfume that I associate with them but more of an overall scent, which includes other body products. For example, my Mum always wears this certain body powder that has a sandalwood scent, no matter what perfume she's wearing. It always mingles sort of nicely with her perfume. She has also used the same hairspray for as long as I can remember and although it's not a 'beautiful' scent, it's nice in its way!! Anyway, the resulting scent is so much more unique than just the perfume alone. My paternal grandmother is sort of the same - she has worn TBS White Musk body lotion since the late 80s when it came out in the UK, and she wears it all the time no matter what her perfume is. And my maternal grandmother has always, ALWAYS worn Nivea hand lotion so that is a scent I associate with her, as well as her perfume. So yeah - I have no issue with other products prodding their heads in!

Ah see it doesn't bother me when other people have this assortment of scents, and it is nice when it is "their" scents but I can't do it myself. I think my nose has become too practiced and it actually sends me mental http://www.xrtheme.com/content/emoticons/Angry/11.gif l when I can smell some note in my deodorant as well as smelling my (carefully chosen) perfume. I'm sure no one else can smell it though.

I don't know if it has ever happened to anyone else, but I swear this is totally true. I was once walking behind this lady who had WAY too much perfume on that when I opened my mouth the actual fragrance burnt my mouth. I swear to god. I opened it and I was like "Oh god close mouth!!" it was like I had been poisoned.

yep, and at work it always seems to be the smokers - at the beginning of the day you get knocked out by the purfume which gradually gets replaced by the cigarrette smell which knocks you out at the end of the day :shakehead:

The elderly and, what might be to someone else, excessive perfume usage can be attributed to several things:
1. Our sense of smell deteriorates with age, just like our hearing and vision. So, people spray more on because what's the point of wearing it if you can't smell it?
2. In older generations it was very common to wear the same single scent for years or decades. If you wear one scent for any length of time you will become innured to it and have to spray on a bit more to smell it.
3. Older perfumes were powerhouses compared to the insipid fruity things of today. Even a couple squirts of Youth Dew is more potent than lavishing yourself with the latest summer celebrity offering. The older scents are often orientals or chypres which kind of stun the nose more used to light florals and fruits. If you were around someone all the time who wore such a scent you would quickly get used it and not notice it to the same extent.
When I am OLD(er) I intend to spray so much Fracas on myself I gas the nursing home attendants. I will make it up to them though by presenting the nice ones with lovely perfume gift baskets from whatever as yet unborn celebrity has come out with a fragrance that year. I will not be forgotten!

I mix it up. Yesterday I put on some Armarni women's body lotion sample I had - Mania it was - and it smelt so good, and I got compliments on it! So didn't bother with a fragrance. But I change this stuff all the time. Why not!
