I am looking for a pressed highlighter to replace both my napoleon gleamer pallette which is almost gone and my Revlon skinlights natural light powder which I adore but is too big and bulky to carry around in my handbag. I was thinking maybe LM - the shimmer pressed powder or the shimmer block (what is the difference, by the way?) or something from Becca...or something else altogether! Something with a touch of subtle colour for my pale skin.
Any ideas? What are your favourites? xo

Laura Mercier is my one of my faves. Shimmer is very light but you can layer it. Lovely texture, gorgeous compact. Haven't tried BECCA highlighters but the Shimmering Skin Perfector is on my wishlist (apparently the Minogue gals swear by it!)
Stila highlighters are great too:

If you want to venture into liquid, I highly recommend:
Benefit High Beam (this is my HG): http://www.benefitcosmetics.com/gp/product/B000FBNYRU/sr=1-2/qid=1188472054/ref=sr_1_2/002-7351930-5744013?ie=UTF8&n=164983011&bcBrand=core
Benefit Moon Beam: http://www.benefitcosmetics.com/gp/product/B000FBF59U/sr=1-4/qid=1188472132/ref=sr_1_4/002-7351930-5744013?ie=UTF8&n=164994011&bcBrand=core
Benefit Hollywood Glow: http://www.benefitcosmetics.com/gp/product/B000FBLTKY/sr=1-9/qid=1188472132/ref=sr_1_9/002-7351930-5744013?ie=UTF8&n=164994011&bcBrand=core
NARS The Multiple (exxy but fabulous): http://www.narscosmetics.com/acb/stores/1/The-Multiple-C61_category_7.aspx
I have combo/oily skin too Sapph, and haven't had any problems with these...

Thanks lovely raspberry! You are a wealth of information as usual .
I love my highlighters but there are too many choices out there. The Stila ones look fab; I am also tempted by these Becca ones:

Sapphy I have a cheapie Australis one in stick form that I use all the time. It was in In Style's top 100 list last year and is apparently a favourite of makeup artists! It's a pearly silver colour and I use it on my cheekbones and browbones.

Nars "Albatross" is a beautiful pressed compact highlighter. It's a sort of champagne pearly tone.

I was going to suggest you check out this one, it was just in a recent Madison, and the picture of it looked beautiful. It's $52 and looked like it would be very pretty and pearly and suit most skin tones.

Beauty Editor has a great article for Highlighter virgins like me.

I am most interested in the face ones. Sound like a good starting point for me. I like the idea of mixing a little illuminator into my Tinted IZ for a Summer glow. I've only really looked at the Revlon Skinlights range before. What else would you recommend?

The Modelco one mentioned that article is good, I have the bronze. I find if you mix it with your foundation and then your bronzer is slightly sparkly/illuminating you can look a little greasy argh!

Revlon Skinlights is nice - had a nice smell that reminded me of sweet tea! I use Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal and i feel naked without it ! I use it on my cheek bones and brow bones, sometimes i mix in a bit with my foundation and gives a lovely finish. Nars the Mulitple in Copacobana is lovely and despite the price lasts you ages.
I've used some model co stuff but i find it doesnt have lasting power, anyon else find this?

I forgot to mention one of my favourites, Napoleon Light Patrol Luminiser Palette!! It has a few different colours so you can do some serious blending! It saves having to cart five different highlighters for a weekend away (not that I've ever done this...).
GOD i love highlighters and illuminators! I don't know how I coped before I discovered them!

Medusa I have a Stila Limited Editon One very similar to the Napolean one but in a sleek white metal compact. I have used it once. I will bring it to the Adorables weekend and you can have it if you like it! I am on a mission to get rid of the stuff I don't use.

M i just use my fingers to apply it along the cheekbones and blending very lightly up along the temples and then onto the browbone. Sometimes I also blend a tiny bit onto the bridge of my nose and into the apples of my cheeks. Pretty easy!

I browsed all the make-up stores last night and there is so many shimmers and highlighters around in all the brands. Wet or dry, applicator supplied, no applicator supplied, face, body etc. Its really a must have make-up essential this season.

I was wondering where in the routine of putting on your makeup that you apply liquid highlighter? I use Revlon Skinlights however I'm never sure to stick in on after foundation, to mix it in, when to apply concealer, before or after, before blush, after blush...
So I've tried a few ways and still can't really tell what's better. Is there a "right" way to apply it or are there a few options?

Hey Milo, I don't think there's any 'right' way to do it...depends on the product and the kind of look you're going for, I guess.
With the Skinlights from memory you can either mix it in with foundation or apply afterwards, so it's definitely a great versatile one to have.
My skin is a bit oily so I tend to use highlighters after my base (foundation and concealer) and blush. I've already added colour so the shimmer is kind of the icing on the cake I guess? I can see better where the light will hit my face after I've applied the other stuff...

Thanks RBB!
I had been applying it pretty much that way anyway, as my skin is tends to get a little oily too.

Haha, I know, there's like this fine line between glowy and dewy and all those lovely adjectives for lovely skin before it just starts going into oil slick territory. Which is such a shame cause I'm not a huge fan of matte foundations on myself, but none of the dewy ones really absorb the shine well enough!

For me, it depends on whether I'm using creme or powder formulations in my other products. Usually I use a powder blush or bronzer, so therefore if I'm using a creme highlighter I'll put it on first, otherwise I'd be smearing creme over my powder and that would not be a good look. However, if I'm using a powder highlighter I'll put it on over my powder blush/bronzer. If I'm using all creme producs, I'll put the creme highlighter on over the creme blush/bronzer.
I'm not a huge fan of mixing formulations - I like to use all powder or all creme, unless the creme sinks in and becomes "invisible". It's really hard to buff a powder in over a creme product, and it makes no sense to apply a creme over a powder (eg to apply creme blush over mineral powder foundation).

I ususally apply powder or cream/stick highlighters at the very end - like raspberry said, as the icing on the cake!.
With liquids it is up to you - you can mix in for overall shimmer although I find that for oily skinned types this can make it look too shiny/reflective.
Another option is to apply after base and before powder - the powder sets the highlighter and if the highlighter is on the more shiny/shimmery side the powder tones this down.
Milo, otherwise just do whatever suits you best - there are no wrong or unsafe ways!
