My daughter and I have booked a 3-night 4-day stay in Melbourne taking in the first weekend of January (when the sales will be on!). I need some ideas as to some good, fun spots to shop in the CBD for (mainly) clothes but also other goodies. We will be staying virtually opposite Myers, and we know DJ's, Melbourne Central and the GPO. We'll be on foot. We know a few of the arcades but I'd like some helpful hints to save us time and so we won't miss anything. I believe there is now a DFO at Spencer St Station and Myers has done up their basement. Any hints to good eating spots would also be helpful.

Hi Bizzi,
Here are soem of the places I like to visit when in Melbourne.
DFO - yes you are right there is one now in Spencer Street.
Victoria Markets - It's always worth a look around the markets and there are little shops all around the outskirts of the market including Suga (the lolly shop where you can watch them make the lollies and have a few tastes) and sohum. They also have the best spanish Donuts ever in the history of the world.
Myer and David Jones Bourk Street Mall - The beauty halls here are awesome. I could spend hours just browsing around in these. A definite must for any beauty junkie.
Chapel Street - This is the place to go in Melbourne. Here you will find the best shopping with the biggest and best names around.
Little arcades and Lanes around the city - in these little lanes you will find boutiques and specialty beauty stores such as Napolean and L'Occitane etc.
Melbourne Central - I like to have a look around here and the perfect potion shop is here too.
St Kilda - I love st kilda. It has the best little cake shops, cafes and restaurants around.

The basement is really cool. I would suggest Cookie on Swanston Street for some awesome Thai if that is your bag.

Bizilizy, you sould invest in the Deck of Secrets for Melbourne particularly the "shopping" and "eat" ones. They are $10 and you can order them online. Will give you some out-of-the-way spots to brag about on your return home!
Chadstone Shopping Centre, or perhaps Southland? They're not in the city centre, but i love shopping at chadstone! :)

centre lane in the city for cute stores... including shag vintage
upstaire in cetre lane there is hell's kitchen for a coffee or glass of wine.
degraves lane for al fresco meal
koko black in the city or carlton for a chocolate mousse martini (amazing decadant mousse!)
brunswick street for sunday breakfast and cute cool stores and bars (bar open, black cat)
dumpling house - can't remember which land in china town (near bungalow something or other bar) you can eat for about $10 and BYO- the BEST! bad service and a wait to get in because the food is so GOOD!
doesn anyone know the name of the place or the lane- near gaylords indian reseraunt I think....
or maybe I am confused!
shopping in the GPO in bourke street mall...
a live gig at toff of the town (in same building as cookie) and a drink at the carriage bar (get your own private carriage booth)- also in the same building.
drink on rooftop of bimbos (and some pizza) or roof of the labour in vain on brunswick street..
this was mean to be about shopping i think but what is shopping without food and booze pit stops? :clapping:

I am seriously printing this off and trapsing around Melbourne with a list, i dont want to miss anything.
Anymore suggestions if someone was thinking more along the lines of clothes than beauty, like aussie designers and cool funky basics (after ive blown the budget on aussie designers :chuckle:)

definitely the GPO building for designers. It's such a lovely building too- no crowds and stress! I just bought a great leona edminson belt there and some kick butt zimmerman wooden heeled sandals!
also the QV building there is cactus jam where a friend manages it and other small designer's shops.
For the unique op shop and curiosities head to shag in the city or chapel stree along with chapel street bazaar on chapel street.
I also love greville street (off chapel) in prahran.
I have always meant to check out circa on greville street (dita von teese has a personal shopping session there- stunning vintage I believe) and cute cafes and small designer stores- you can walk up to the end and hit the carlton gardens and stunning exhibition building.
degraves and central lanes are just brilliant for atmosphere and a pit stop for a cuppa among the shopping frenzy.
there is a magazine world (I think that's what it's called) on elizabeth street where there is every magazine under the sun- they have coffee there too so you can sit and chill and read your fav world fashion mags.
stop at st jeromes or sister bella for a corona down the lane ways when you need some more chill out time.
will write more when I think of more...
oh of course bridge road for bargains (mimco and bendon outlets among other crap and good stuff) if you are on bridge road check out the very unique vintage store- meet me at mikes- SO CUTE!

Hi Allison, do you mean Gertrude St (that leads to Carlton Gardens)?
I was on a tram today and went past mag world, what a great store!

Thought you did! Just wanted to get it clear for our interstate friends who might be searching the end of Greville St for the Carlton Gardens!
