I'm using Skniceuticals products to try and repair years of acne damage plus prevent aging but I'm finding them a little drying and the cleansers I've been using are making things worse:redcheeks:
If I use a richer cleanser I end up with a quick trip to blackhead city if I use one more for oily skin my face feels parched
Can you recommend something for acne prone sensitive somewhat dehydrated skin

I think you should be looking out for a cream cleanser with a salicylic acid content...

EDIT: Ooops, sorry, didn't realise this was in "Ask Allison"! :redcheeks:

I would look for a cleanser that does not contain SLS as Sulfates can be very drying & irritate sensitive skin.

Long time no post Ishtar! :waving:

Good to hear from you again Ishtar! Have you tried the Balancing Cleanser by Alpha-h? I find this to be very gentle on my skin (esp the pimple prone chin area), and yet not at all stripping of my skin. I also love the Dr Haushka Cleansing Cream, which is also great for my skin, and not at all drying.

I would be inclined to recommend an oil-free milk cleanser such as Alpha-H Balancing Cleanser, Ultraceuticals Ultra Milk Cleanser or MD Formulations Basic Cleanser Non-Glycolic; or a low-foaming/non-foaming gel like L'Occitane Honey Cleansing Jelly or Aesop Fabulous Face Cleanser.

I tried the Alpha H one several years ago it didn't get through all the grease I'm talking heavy duty industrial strength oil here
The Hauschka might be a good option also the L'Occitane
I'm using Cetaphil at the moment but it's still a bit too rich
I need something gentle that can still cut through the grease
Oh god that sounds like an advertisement for dishwashing liquid:rollthoseeyes:

Hmmm ok... what about Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel, have you tried that?
Or perhaps the Clarins Gentian milk cleanser.

Good to see you back Ishtar!

I would highly recommend the Alpha-H Triple Action Cleanser. It is antibacterial amd would address your oil issues. I have sensitive skin and am able to use this cleanser both morning and evening. It is the best cleanser I have ever used! For maximum impact, I would also recommend you apply the Alpha-H Liquid Gold after cleansing each evening before bed. Ishtar you will be blown away! :typing:

I have also tried the Alpha-H Balancing Cleanser, however I do not enjoy creamy cleansers.

Ishtar, if you are really struggling to find a cleanser to suit you I could send you some samples of some of the ones I have to see if they work for you. I would be happy to help. There's nothing worse than buying a product to find that it doesn't suit. Don't feel under any obligation to accept my offer, just thought I would try to help.

Hi Ishtar, I recommend the Clarins too, although you do need to leave it on a few extra minutes to get rid of oil and grime. I also use a warm face washer to remove excess cleanser as it can be hard to rinse off. Great product though - I have very oily but sensitive skin too so I know exactly how you feel. It can be extremely frustrating!

I have not tried the UC milk but others love it. Their gentle cleansing gel is lovely too, but as it is low-foaming I suggest you try a sample first.

That's very sweet of you Pinkcupcake :kissing:I've got bottles of cleanser sitting all about the place smirking at me because I rushed in and bought them
You wouldn't think it would be so hard to find something as seemingly simple as a cleanser

I am one of those others! Highly recommend the UC Ultra Milk Cleanser Ishtar. Your skin sounds a bit like mine. I was using foaming cleansers but they dried me out too much. As soon as I switched to a light, milky cleanser and then targeted the oiliness issue with other products I was sorted.

Hi ishtar,

I don't want to jump the gun here and I want to be thorough.. there are a heap of recommendations flying around and I want to establish the basics before I recommend anything.

thanks for your patience too- it's been a busy week so here I am still at work at 7pm catching up and making sure you gals get your advice for this week!

what is your current routine ishtar? I want to know everything so I can work out what is going on with your skin and then look to correct it and re arrange your existing products if need be and we can also look at a cleanser for you too..

but let's make sure we go about it thoroughly so I shall await your routine and I promise to get back to you next tuesday with a routine and suggestions.

hope that's ok!

Hi Ishtar,

I still need to get a few things straight. So this is your routine:

"Here's my routine I just got a new skinceuticals cleasner and I am alternating it with Cetaphil and I got the Ole Henriksson Vitamin Plus which has proved to be very soothing
I also use Skinceuticals CE ferulic serum not everyday though it's drying me out a bit even though I put the B5 Hydrating serum and a moisturiser on top I am hoping that with the new Ole moisturiser I might go a bit better with that
At night I use Skinceuticals Retinol 0.5 or 1.0 depending on how sensitive my skin feels with a moisturiser on top I didn't do that at first but I find it nesessary now if my skin feels too dry I just use an oily skin moisturiser
I really really wish they would make anti aging products for acne type skin so I don't have to use fifty things

I also alternate with Skinceutical renew Overnight oily I love it"

Now which skinceuticals cleanser are you using - that will give me a clue as to what doesn't feel right. You didn't name which one it was.

You have described your skin as being 'acne prone sensitive somewhat dehydrated' and also described 'grease'.

What makes you feel that your skin is sensitive? Is this a reaction to particular ingredients or redness in the skin.. can you describe the 'sensitivity' to me so I understand what it may be caused by.

When you say your skin is dehydrated, does it feel tight all the time or just in places...? Does it come and go or is it worse after you have used the 1% retinol?

When you say Acne do you mean pustules all over with redness or is it just located in one part of the face? Are black heads and white heads an issue too?

so right now your routine is:

am
cleanse with skinceuticals cleanser- may be the foaming cleanser ot the simply clean?

apply CE Ferulic (every second day)

apply hydrating B5

pm
cleanse as above

apply .5% or .1% retinol every night

apply ole henriksen vitamin plus balancing cream alternated with renew overnight cream

My additional questions are:

do you use a sunscreen in the day time and are your using and eye cream day and night time.

All skin ranges cater for acne and mature skin types but with good skin ranges the issues are dealt with by using specific serums and moisturisers to get the exact combo for your individual skin. I know it can be frustrating because we all want one moisturiser that does it all but reality is that for the best results a combo of serums and mosturisers is the best way to get the exact things for your specific needs...

I am doing my best to make sure all of that is in place for your skin, but I think I will make a couple of small changes in there...

Ok lets see dehydration is mainly my cheeks they start to feel tight and uncomfortable
Acne is mainly blackeads now but I still get pimples I used to have full blown hideous acne I didn't have skin with some pimple I had pimples with a bit of skin:explode:

I only use the Reninol every second night otherwise I start to get sensitive by which I mean my skin starts to sting a bit thats mainly the cheeks too

It's the Skinceuticals Foaming Cleanser I've only used it a couple of times so far but it's not drying me out

I tend to go by feel if my skin feels ok it gets the Retinol or Serum if it's feeling tight or uncomfortable it just gets moisturiser
I always use eye cream I started doing that when I was a teenager
I either use Mineral Make Up or sunblock I keep my skin out of the sun and never try to get a tan

hello again!

ok well perhaps we can look at an MD formulations cleanser in your case so that you get a milky texture, but the glycolic will be working on the black heads and exfoliating surface dead tight feeling skin cells.

am
cleanse with MD formulations facial cleanser sensitive formula: http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=3843
(I am recommending the sensitive formula so that we go gentle at first wiht the PH, that way you can graduate to the regular formula next time)

apply CE Ferulic (you have been using this every second day)- you can use this every day if you want to

apply hydrating B5

follow this with the skinceuticals daily moisture:http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=9426

and a broad spectrum sunscreen. the invisible zinc range is great and super cost effective and great stuff: http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/brand.asp?id=60&on=suppliers

pm
cleanse as above

apply .5% or .1% retinol every second night

you could alternate this with the intensive serum called 'Face cream' this will be boosting your hydration levels whilst working on age prevention: http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idProduct=9168

apply ole henriksen vitamin plus balancing cream alternated with renew overnight cream

so with those small tweaks we can be dealing with the dehydrated feeling in the skin along with the congestion that is bothering you.

I think some extra AHA may be of benefit to those blockages you have. You could definitely loook into the liquid gold once your skin feels more settled with the changes we have made there. Here is the link: http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=381

I like the look of that cleanser but I'm a bit worried about the Face Cream being too rich
I have tried Liquid Gold it doesn't work for me I tried most of the Alpha H oily skin products but they just didn't do anything for me unfortunately

Thank You:glee:

I am happy to suggest something else but may be best for you to let me know what you are happy or unhappy with and why

I must have read up the wrong one:redcheeks:I'm so paranoid about setting my skin off
The Alpha H just didn't do anything no improvement or difference at all I used it up on my back but it dried it out and made the skin worse

skinceuticals is very different to Alpha H, so don't worry.
