Not sure if this belongs in general or fashion? But its a fashion question :waving:
Specifically the melbourne cup, but obviously there's spring horse races, etc in other states.
Any ideas on what to wear? Is a hat essential? Any online websites or magazines to help choice in what to wear? What's in this season?
I've only been to one races before (an embarrasing fashion story i'll tell u later:redcheeks:) so any advice would be great!
Are you going to the races this spring? Already deciding on what to wear?
thanks:hugs:

Such a perfect excuse to dress up :clapping: Go all out and get yourself an outfit together and you alsolutely must wear something on your head, a hat or a fascinator.

I highly recommend this site for affordable custom made fascinators.

So when are you going?
Are you on the lawn or in a box?
Any ideas on an outfit?

Oh I would love to get to the races this Spring - can be a good day out!

I never wear a hat, I feel too fussy when I do (I'm a closet hat wearer, I love them at home or in my car but take them off in public) and so I usually put flowers in my hair, or one of those fancy fascinators that are around. I think you have to have something on your head really, cos it's traditional... Depends where you are as well, in Brisbane I think it's a little more laid back than say the Melbourne Cup.

Also remember that alcohol in the middle of the day, and in the sun, usually affects people more than it otherwise would. Learnt that one the hard way, the first time I ever went to the races... :redcheeks:

Well, my one piece of advice to you would be this: remember, it is a DAYTIME event, so don't wear a cocktail or after-five dress. I see this way too often and it is just such a bad look. My family is in racing and I grew up going to the races, and seeing people dressed inappropriately really makes me disappointed (and it makes the old establishment ladies shudder!!). Try a pretty afternoon dress, or wear a suit!! When I wear a suit and hat to the races I always feel so much cooler than the sad drunk girls who are stumbling about in their flimsy sparkly dresses. But suits can be expensive - so my advice would be to wear a dress, or a gorgeous top (ruffly and feminine always goes down well) with a pencil skirt or perhaps some wide-leg tailored pants. The words to keep in mind are elegant and polished.

ok, now sorry... to your questions...

A hat isn't essential, but it is however, essential to wear something on your head. You should wear something fun, comfortable, and no tooo revealing. I think blue and yellow is huge for the season, but you don't want to look like evryone else. I say wear something different!! :glee:

Yeah! Ever-so-1940s-inspired!

Peeptoes would be a neccessity of course, maybe the Christian Louboutin-inspired ones with a tiny (like 1cm) platform? They are really easy to find now.

Emmy, I just love the Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne! (as long as the drunks leave me alone!)
Each race day has a different feel.

Caulfield Cup Day is elegant but if you have not attended Caulfield before, around 3.30pm a very cool breeze blows through the course. On a lovely day it is quite refreshing, otherwise it becomes freezing cold.

Flemington is a huge course with lots of walking so think of your feet.

Derby Day is the most formal of the carnival with men wearing mourning suits.
Melbourne Cup Day has no rules and is the crazy outfit/costume day.
Oaks Day is such a girls day.

As Melbourne can produce anything weather wise, when selecting an outfit don't make it too flimsy or too heavy and remember your feet!

Whatever happens you will have the best day! :whipcrack:
