Who else struggles with this? Any tips on making it easy?
Once again, I am trying to get fitter and to lose a few kilos. I have been good going to the gym - getting up at 6.30 and going before work, and I even went twice yesterday - cardio before work and weights after.
BUT I cannot stop eating crap - last night I polished off half a block of chocolate! I don't eat enough greens and I am trying to choose healthier options all the time, but I find it too hard to resist sweet treats. If I am out for lunch, I see a chicken schnitzel focaccia with lots of salad as being healthy! :shakehead:
What can I do?!!

Me too!!! I am eating so much more crap than usual and I can't stop it. I will finish the chocolate in my flat/ice cream/whatever and say to myself NO MORE. YOU WILL NOT BUY ANY MORE. Then I am at the supermarket and I just HAVE to buy it. What is this? I was blaming it on quitting smoking, but it has been 4 months now so there really is no excuse

People have said it can be the cold weather blah blah blah. But no one (except you Fusspot! Hehehe) seems to be having these problems so I think blaming it on the weather or anything else is a cop out. I just want the endless cravings to stop. Oh and I will crave Maccas like nothing else, but I can't just order a small cheeseburger meal... OH NO, I want a quarter pounder meal AND a cheeseburger. I am a guts!! (PS - Have avoided Maccas for the last week and a half but it has been a struggle!!!)

I struggle with cravings for junk food a lot and also i tend to stuff myself silly with a particular food all the time. I have good days and bad days but as long as you have some good days its better than none.

It is a proven fact that the more you have of something the more you crave it.
Do Not try to just cut everything out at once, that is recipe for disaster & will only lead to binges. Cut out sugars & fats slowly but methodically. Resist all temptation to buy junk food in the supermarket as part of your pantry staples.
I have a very sweet tooth so here are my tips.
I can't trust myself to have sweets just hanging around the house, I have to eat them. So if the family wants biscuits, I buy the ones they like but I hate. I won't eat them.
I bake my own cakes, this enables me to pick something more healthy than choc mud cake but still satisfy my craving.
Keep a massive bottle of water at your desk & aim to finish it everyday.
I only drink water but will have a Coke only when I go out.
Dark choc will satisfy your craving better than milk choc. You will eat less.
Change what you can to lite alternaltives, skim milk instead of full fat. Be sure to check the labels as Lite can be misleading.
Use a good non stick pan for your cooking. You will use much less oil.
:yelling: EAT BREAKFAST! That does not include cocopops.
Yogurt/Fruche is a good snack. The protien will fill you up.
Keep a fruit bowl in sight. The colours will draw your attention.
As a way of forcing yourself to eat more vegetables aim to cook at least 1 vegetarian meal a week. We are trained to eat meat & veg but if you look at vego meals they are actually fanastic.

Oh, I am with you guys. I go through phases - like, months - where I will eat heaps of crap and just lose sight of eating healthily. I too will go to the supermarket to only get proper food but then will end up buying crap - it's like I feel ripped off or cheated if I leave without a treat for myself! My major problem I think is that I don't eat enough protein - my food is largely carbs/vegies based (eg lots of pasta, rice, and vegetarian foods) so I'm not full for long enough and I end up getting tired/hungry very quickly.
I have gone through times when I find it really easy to be healthy though, and these are my tips:
- Keep the fridge stocked with easily edible fruits and vegies (eg cut up carrots, cauli, capsicum etc - I know it seems lame but it works). I also like to buy little tubs of low-fat tzatziki to dip the vegies in.
- Keep bite-sized pieces of ham and chicken in the fridge. One or two pieces of protein is very satisfying.
- Stick to meat and veg for your dinner for a while. Yes it seems boring but it is really healthier than foods with lots of processed carbs and sauces. You can do different things to the vegies, such as roasting, stir frying and steaming - but the idea is to limit your meal to proten + vegies, and no refined carbs such as pasta and rice.

Celeste, Medusa's advice is perfect.
From your posts what you crave is sugar. The more sugar you eat the more you crave, this is the chemical response within your body. Maccas is full of sugar, lollies, chocolate, bread etc ... all full of sugar.
Your example of the healthy choice meal being chicken schnitzel in foccacia with salad on closer look is not a healthy choice. Fried chicken (fat) in breadcrumbs (sugar) foccacia (sugar) salad (healthy).
Even when we are trying to excersize and eat well there is a particular time of the day or night that we become unstuck, it may only be for an hour or so but in that time we will crave/eat/drink all the wrong things. Only you will know when this is. Mine is within the 2-3 hours before going to bed. Once you become aware of this it is easier to focus on substituting better choices.
My darling also gave up smoking as well as drinking coke. He started to gain weight as he was eating sweets like a maniac. He substituted the lollies and chocolate with diabetic equivalent and biscuits with the Viva Lite range as non of these items contain sugar, he has lost many kgs and looks fabo. He still eats heaps of these treats though. :typing: :hugs:

Fusspot, I usually force myself to eat a crunchy apple and wash it down with a large glass of water.
I actually cut the apple in eighths then each section in 3, put them in a favourite bowl and eat one piece as though it is a canape then sip the water as though it is champagne and so on ............
I can't believe I have blown my cover like this F! :redcheeks:
As it takes time to finish this ritual, I don't feel hungry when I have finished consuming it all. :whipcrack:

I hear you Celeste!
I'm a sugar fiend - it's my major food weakness. Everything else I can resist i.e. chips, dip, pastries etc but I can sniff out a bag of mixed lollies or a custard tart a mile away. I think I'm in a habit too now of wanting something at about 4pm, then again straight after dinner.
A friend recommended I up the protein both with and between meals (as Medusa suggested) i.e. adding nuts & seeds to cereal, yoghurt/fruche or a handful of almonds as a snack. Lots of great fruit in summer too so I'm hanging out for that....means you get the fibre as well as the sugar hit. Need to be wary of some high-sugar fruits though i.e. bananas and grapes, but everything in moderation is fine...also try drinking a glass of water, then see what your 'hunger rating' is like. If it's only a 2, you might actually be dehydrated, so perhaps have a bit more water. But if you're still hungry say an 8, have a healthy snack.
I've heard it takes about three weeks for your body to get into a new routine, so if you can hold out you won't have the naughty food cravings and instead will be craving healthy foods. Fingers crossed anyway!
Now, where is that super-sized coke...

Change to unrefined foods - wholefood/wholemeal. More fibre & less sugar.
I get hyperglycemic. I read in a diabeties article that cinnamon helps to stabalise blood sugar. So I swapped the sprinkleing of raw sugar on my Vitabits to cinnamon sugar, less than 1/2 tsp. Its tastes yum and it really does work.
I was also advised to eat protien for breakfast to kick start my metabolism & help my blood sugar. This works also. When berries are in season I eat them with yogurt on my cereal and if we have bacon for breakfast I'm often full til mid afternoon. I hate eggs but eggs or beans on toast would also do the trick.
My weak spots are 4pm & sometimes 9pm depending what we ate for dinner.

I do this too!
Every morning I make the whole family these great healthy lunches but I hardly give a thought as to what I feed myself. :redcheeks:
Fusspot - when I am going out for the day, even just to the shops I will make us all sandwiches. Even if it's just vegimite. It tides us over for a while & you know how expensive it can get buying everyone lunch in a food court. :shakehead:

I use lite milk. I have breakfast EVERY morning - Vitabrits (3 with lite milk, sometimes with fruit on top) or porridge. I have a mouthful of juice to swallow a multivitamin.
I usually snack on almonds or rice crackers at 11.
I drink water, tea and coffee and sometimes Coke Zero during the day. I do need to drink more water though.
Lunch is usually Subway, a sandwich or something like that.
Mid afternoon I don't usually eat anything, although I recently brought in to work some 98% fat free Cup-a-Soup things for if I am hungry.
I eat dinner early-ish. Which is usually pasta or meat with veg (Oz, I usually don't have carbs with this - too lazy to cook them!), or sometimes those Lean Cuisine meals. But this is where I fail. After dinner, in that 2-3 hours before bed time. I go to the kitchen to make peppermint tea - in the feeble hope it will satisfy a craving - but often don't even get to the point of turning the kettle on because I find myself getting the ice cream out or hunting for choc/lollies.
I recently started baking. However I think I need to STOP baking - no cupcakes at home means I won't eat said cupcakes.

This is another thing. Fruit and veg are SO expensive - it is cheaper to buy crap. Makes me mad. At Safeway strawberries are $4 a punnet at the moment. I am not paying that, considering half on them are mushed anyway. I've taken to buying prozen peas and beans and having those as my green veg. So much cheaper

I like to have something sweet after dinner too... I think this is fine so long as you don't go overboard. For me the trick is buying really good dark chocolate, just one square is usually enough then to satisfy the sweet craving.

Lately I have been trying really hard to stick to my healthy eating plan and have been so good. How ever yesterday was not so good!
Here's what I have normally:
Breakfast:
1 X low fat apple and rhubarb yougurt
1 Slice of multigrain Toast with 2 scrambled egg whites
1 Small glass of Cranberry Juice
Morning Tea:
Handful of mixed nuts and dried fruit
1 Piece of fresh fruit (apple, banana, pear etc)
Lunch:
Usually a salad sandwhich on multigrain bread
A freshly squeezed juice (varies from day to day)
Afternoon Tea:
1 small tub of Weight Watchers two fruits
1 Cinnamon & Apple ski D'lite muesli bar
Dinner:
Usually grilled fish or chicken with steamed vegies
or
Small Bowl of pasta
or
stirfry with fresh seafood
I also drink at least 3 litres of water every day which is required for the health of my kidney.
Yesterday I had a bad day. Bad in the way of 3 cans of coke, not zero that I usually drink, im talking about the original. To make matters worse I got up during the night and had another fizzy drink and some chocolate. As my diet is an important part of keeping me well and I suffer quite badly from hypoglycemia I was very bad yesterday. Have been much better today.

I go through stages too...
Breakfast - normally porridge made on water with psyllium husks and chopped up strawberries with low fat soy milk. Or 2 hi-bran weetbix.
Cup of tea or low fat hot choc once I'm at work - if you make it yourself you know how much milk/sugar etc is going into it which helps
Snack - lately this has been one big Orange - sooo sweet and juicy at the moment and helps with the mid morning sugar cravings
Lunch - some sort of salad wrap with a bit of protein to help keep me fuller for longer
Snack - hopefully another piece of fruit... have been a bit remiss lately with chocs though! :shakehead:
Dinner is usually meat/chicken/fish and steamed veges... I stay away from carbs as I've discovered these upset my tummy
If I know I need more veges in my diet, I chop up all my favourites, steam them in the microwave and then sprinkle some grated low fat cheese over the top (JUST a sprinkling!) for some extra flavour.

The worst time for me is if I am at home, worse still alone coz there's no one to stop me. At least at work I take my own lunch so I only eat what I pack.
Water is good for filling you up.
If you don't buy it you wont eat it. So don't shop on an empty stomache.
If I'm tempted to buy crap in the supermarket, I remind myself I've a fitness/weightloss goal and I picture my ideal body and how happy I will be.
If you want to snack you can get these nuts/seeds packs from the supermarket. Great to have on your desk if you aren't "hungry" but just want to nibble at something...
Dark chocolate is better than milk - don't take the whole packet to the couch, break a bit off, then put it away.

This is a basic rundown of what I would eat:
Brekkie:
Porridge with Skim Milk and Banana/Strawberries
Homemade Muesli with some fruit and some skim milk
Multigrain toast with low fat ricotta/cream cheese/cottage cheese with sliced tomato, turkey and basil
Special K with Strawberries
Poached egg with baby spinach, tomatoes, turkey, mushrooms and some fetta
Smoothie of some description
Often will have some green tea, or some cranberry juice, or at work grab a soy flat white or soy hot choccie as a treat
(Obviosuly this isn't all at once!!!!!!!!!!!)
Mid Morning:
Could be anything from and apple or some peaches, Homemade peanut butter muesli bar, 9 grain crisp bread with some cream cheese and cucumber, tomato and turkey, some almonds, etc.
Lunch:
Sushi
Multigrain Sandwich with Salmon or Turkey, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, light cheese, alfalfa and spanish onion
Pasta with tomato suace and either side salad or some steamed broccoli
Stirfry with brown rice
9 Grain Crisp bread with cottage cheese, cucumber, tomato, alfalfa, fetta
Wanton soup with lotsa greens
Normally followed by an apple or something
Afternoon tends be something along the lines of morning stuff
Dinner:
Grilled fish/chicken/beef/lamb with either steamed vegies (normally favour broccoli, beans, carrots) and something like sweet potato 'chips', or a big salad
Pasta with tomato based sauce with seafood or chicken, and if vegies aren't in the sauce a side of slad or steamed greens.
Stirfry with brown rice
Grilled chicken with my version of "pilaf" (brown rice with spanish onion, garlic, parsley, seasoning, maybe some nuts) and side salad
After dinner:
Anything from some green tea, a normal tea or soy hot choccie, or some fruit, or some strawberries with a bit of dark chocolate drizzled over them, or if I've made some muffins or banana bread or something, which I al would take to work as a snack.

Hey PP - Sustagen is ok - treat it like a snack - I've had dieticians who have advised they are ok as well as up'n'go's so go for it.
Thats what i was thinking if i exclude my afternoon snack and just a have sustagen so that when i go walking etc in the afternoon it would help. I'll give it a go, what have i got to lose???............ oh yeah thats right 5kgs lol

PP that's perfect - that's what I have done in the past and it works well- is also good for any cravings. What you need to be wary of are those meal replacement thingies and the powdered forms - they're what you need to avoid. Sustagen and Up'n'Go's are great and endorsed my dieticians!

Princess,
It is such a sad reflection on society that people are always measuring other peoples worth and acceptability based on how they look. It makes me really sad for you that you are getting pressure from a total moron (yes that's what she is if she is pressuring you to lose weight) for nothing more than superficial purposes.
If you want to loose some weight you should do it because you want to and because it will make you happy and not for any other reason.
I have struggled with my weight for the past four or five years because of a medical condition and no body is harder on me about it than myself. I have wasted so much time torturing myself about my appearance and my self esteem has be battered beyond belief.
I am only just getting to a level where I am starting to accept myself for who and what I am. I still have people making snide remarks about my size from time to time and I always have relatives saying "oh you use to be so gorgeous once" and that really cuts when people say hings like that.
I would encourage you to focus on your good points. Know that you have a good heart and that you are a good person. In my opinion this is far more valuable than anything aesthetic could ever be.
My Motto is : I might be fat but you are ugly and I CAN diet!!

Your dad sounds exactly like my Mum. I have always been the fat ugly sister in our family (Even tho we look exactly alike but she's always been a little thinner). My family still managed to call me fat even when I was suffering Anorexia in high school.
Like your dad, mum always tells me to lose weight then is the one who tries to sabbotage any efforts I make. The next words out of her mouth after the "lose weight for the wedding" comment were "let's go out for dinner". It's probably harder to take coming from the people who are supposed to love you no matter what.
It does make me feel better that the bride told me she think I am beautiful the way I am... and I am sure that your friend feels the same way about you...

PP if it makes you feel any better, your friend has asked you to be her bridesmaid because she LOVES you!! Think about that! Of all the people she knows, she has asked you to be with her on the most important day of her life. Believe me, I know how you feel. I have struggled with my weight since adolescence and when my best friend asked me to be her bridesmaid last year, I announced that I was going to go on a hardcore diet and exercise regimen. She said "that's awesome, if you want to lose weight for yourself then I think that's great, but don't think you have to do it for my wedding". She never once made me feel like I was anything other than beautiful and wonderful, and when we were discussing colours and styles etc she would always point out my good points like "oh you will look so great in this colour" or "that style makes your waist look great". (God I am tearing up as I write this because I LOVE her so much and she is just such a good kind person!) I am sure your friend feels the same about you even if she is perhaps not as vocal as mine was (hey we can't all have the world's best bestie - only I can! :hearts: ).
Also, one other thing occurred to me. You know how it is that people tend to be overly critical when they themselves are really unhappy and insecure and full of fear? Maybe you could remember that. When the MOTB criticises your weight, it's probably because SHE'S insecure about her own physical appearance and how her family and the wedding will be judged, so she shifts the insecurity onto something else - you. Truly happy people know what's important and aren't afraid of being judged, so they don't stress about superficial stuff! Keep reminding yourself of that, PP.

Thats does make me feel better Oz, but there was a few little incidents over the weekend that have really hurt my confidence.
1st incident - out at the local pub, heaps of local guys and a few ring ins anyway, my friends fiance over heard these losers say thay me, and my other 2 friends were getting skinny with every drink that they drank - how mean is that
2nd incident - this local loser called my friend a large at top note - he's a tool
3rd incident - see "i don't like it" thread about my friend
It just makes me so furious that people can be so hurtful to other people, we are human too, so what we are size 14 mainly we are who e we are and the sooner people start seeing us for who we are and not what we could be were we thinner the better everything should be.
I find men can be more hurtful then women sometimes, if chick calls me fat i'm like whatever your just jealous you haven't got my killer waist, but when guys call me fat it really hurts because i've now been single since i was 17 and now i'm 22, no boyfriends nothing serious. Its just small town syndrome.

14? PP that's not big at all?!
And I don't get this either. People feel the need to bring someone they have never meet in their life down. I get it too all the time. Only I get it because I look different. I get called a punk, slut, ***** etc and then everyone in my crowd will have a go at "metros". And it's just like, dude I don't even know you, why would you talk crap about me? And I don't like when my friends have a go at "Metros" cos it's exactly the same thing. It just causes more segregation.
All I can say is people are dumb. I really don't know why people would have a go at someone they don't even know, it's quite stupid. And why is it that women can get called fat but with men it's like a tough thing, oh his not fat he's a man or some crap like that. I lost 10kgs a year ago and everywhere i went i had several guys chatting me up, buying me drinks etc the usualy, but as soon as i put it all back on i wasn't worth talking too etc. I'm still the same person just a little more self conscious and chubbier. My BFF looks absolutely amazing when we go out and she is a 14 up top and 12-14 on the bottom and i am the complete reverse to her and i always look at her and think how great she looks etc.

PP I do understand what you're going through, I really do. I am bigger than you for sure (a definite size 16 and in some lines I can be an 18 in pants) and yes, as a general rule men are quicker to be overtly critical and judgmental than women are. Somewhere along the line, many men got to believe they had the right to judge the appearance of women. For the most part, too, men have been brainwashed into believing that the ideal woman fits into a very limited mould. They have been told what to find attractive and have been told what to dislike ("no fat chicks" etc). I endured my fair share of teasing when I was in high school and not even all that fat. It shaped who I am and battered my self-esteem for a long time. For ages, I was convinced that my fat was the first thing that anyone would notice about me when they met me. But over the years I have made great friends and met lovely people and now I know that most other people really and truly are not as critical of us as we are of ourselves. Honestly, they're not.
But....what can you do? Short of losing weight to please other people, there's nothing you can do except believe that you're terrific. It also helps to give people the benefit of the doubt. For every man who is an a*hole, there's another one who would genuinely like you if you got to know each other. And I am telling you right now, size 14 is not fat. I would love to be a 14! And a lot of men would find size-14 curves extremely appealing! So start having some more confidence in yourself, girl! And be the kind of person that other people are attracted to - be fun, kind, funny, considerate and smart! Sooner or later the a*holes will fall by the wayside and only the good people will be left.

PP do yourself a favour and look around at all the couples you know and see (even have a look at the wedding pics in the Sunday papers!). The women are all shapes and sizes and attractiveness levels. I really like doing this as it makes me see that many guys are completely in love with their girlfriends, who are women that I might not perceive as that attractive. Obviously size, shape, height, beauty etc is only a PART of these women and not their whole selves, but it does go to show that we are all attracted to each other for a variety of reasons and there is definitely a guy (or many guys for all we know) out there who will think that you and I are just fab and gorgeous and wonderful!
EDIT: btw I don't mean that we should look at other women and go "oh she's so much uglier than me and SHE has a boyfriend, there's hope for me yet", I more meant it as a way to see all the variety of factors involved in our attraction to one another.

My skin is clear of pimples, i've lost 1kg of weight so far, i feel happier with myself not so desperate and don't feel as tired. I was going to bed at 8.30pm before and i was getting nothing done, just the basic whereas now i'm up till 10pm cleaning out cupboards and preparing lunches.
