I saw this in the Age’s Beauty Beat blog. There are some interesting posts from readers.

This may have been started before but I could not find a generic thread dedicated to mineral makeup- in general. Apologies if I am giving everyone a sense of deja-vu!? I just thought this could be like a resource for those curious about mineral makeup.

I know we all love Ultraceuticals mineral makeup but what others are out there that you have tried or heard of? Any thoughts?

I have come up with this list of mineral makeup lines:

Ultraceuticals
ID Bare Escentuals
Jane Iredale
Minerelle
Musq
The Natural Source
Ettica

Any ideas on these? Any new ones?

Some others are:

Glo Minerals
Minerelle
Inka
L'oreal

Aparently Neutrogena have one on the way too

I have triend Jane Iredale, U/c and iD. My favourite is Jane Iredale because it has such a huge range, followed by U/c which is soo easy and such a great coverage and iD is a close thrid. Just couldnt quiet master the swirl, tap, buff thing

Where I get my eyebrows done, they stock ELES Mineral Makeup - which is made by the people that make Pevonia.

I've only had the concealer and the eyebrow pencil used on me but both were quite nice. I'm actually considering giving it a whirl when my current foundation runs out.

I have only tried Ultraceuticals Mineral so far and have used this for the past 4 months, but am keen to try Jane Iredale too.

I have just ordered Bare Escentuals - RareMinerals Skin Revival Treatment ( Night). It's a mineral treatment to wear to bed! You put in on the same as the normal mineral makeup.....it even comes in different colours(to wear to bed?)..... but also clear.

Can't wait to try it - http://store.bareescentuals.com/products/default/BAREESCENTUALS.BE_RAREMINERALS.MasterRareMinTmnt.c pd/?BAC=RareHPCallout

I forgot to mention, I have samples of Minerelle at the moment. I was sent the three lightest shades. The first shade is a gorgeous colour but may be just too light for me - I have not worn it out yet. The second shade is more the correct level of lightness but it is very pink-toned and my skin is already quite pink toned. The third shade is lovely too but a bit too yellow for me. I think the UC in beige is a better match for me.

Also, the minerelle samples came as a loose powder (it is actually sold as a pressed one like the UC) and I found it seemed to cake on in patches and was hard to blend, unlike the UC. Perhaps this would be due to its loose capacity?

Aparently Neutrogena have one on the way tooI:

This one has been out for a number of years, one of the first available. They have a great and comprehensive treatment makeup range but I am doubtful as to whether we will ever see it here.:shakehead:

PS The Loreal one is surprisingly good. Never thought I would use a mineral makuep as my only testing experience resulted in a caked an uneven look but I am impressed with this one.

I like it too! I have been using it daily for the last month or so, and I think it's great! And a time saver!

I'm trying out the id BareMinerals this week - so far I quite like it. It has a slight shimmer through it so it's not as matte-looking as the Ultraceuticals one, it's more of a dewy/glowy look. It's a loose powder, not a compact, so can be a bit messy if you're not careful. (I'm a "Fairly Light" btw.)

I find that mineral makeup generally can be tricky to apply over anything remotely sticky, like sunscreen (which of course I wear every day). I find that a primer like Clarins ISPT helps with this, but on the whole it would be a lot easier to apply without sunscreen underneath (e.g. for evening).

Laura Mercier is bringing out a mineral foundation later this year, I believe.

The neutrogena range in Aus is so basic compared to in the US. I wonder why? Its so frustrating! Yet they have great suncare and sensitive skin ranges in the US, which would be perfect for an Australian market, what with our high awareness of the need for sunscreen (and the sun itself), the high rate of skin cancer, and the need for gentle products.

I recently purchased the U/C Mineral makeup and had real trouble using it. The first time I used it I managed to create a very noice cakey look and the product just sat on the surface of my skin. However I went and got a bigger brush which helped a lot and slowly I seem to be getting the hang of it. Definitely be interested in the more dewy looking one Kate mentioned. I love a dewy finish in the cooler months.

I have the U/C one and I really like it, but it took me a little while to get the hang of the "buffing" thing. I love it now and I've never really been much of a foundation fan before, but this feels light and doesn't feel like it's clogging my skin up - it can still breathe. I only use it really lightly though.

I've tried many mineral makeup ranges over the past year and what i've noticed is that many companies claim to be completely natural then you look at their ingredients and they have irritants, chemicals and preservatives in them. I have sensitive skin and i've had problems with so many ranges of mineral makeup. My beautician sells 'Mineral Essentials' and they are completely natural. Great product also australian owned!
Decently priced as well.

I also love the new L'oreal Mineral Foundation. I found it was reasonably priced, wasn't too cakey if applied with a big brush and buffed in for a while, and meant I didn't have to wear sunscreen because it had an SPF factor of 19! Am very pleased with this one and would definitely repurchase.

I got my Avon one but the colour (bisque) was WAY too dark. The catalogue is very unrepresentative of the colours, so I have passed this one off to a friend and ordered the lightest one (which appears almost white in the catalogue). From a minor inspection, it looks like any other mineral foundation. It comes with a powder puff type thing, but I'd apply it with a brush I think.

I tried out the Avon one today just to test out the texture, blendability etc, and I have to say it was really lovely. Provided a good coverage (I could survive if it was a bit more sheer but would be great for covering minor blemishes, capillaries, etc) and seemed to stay on quite well. My major beefs are with the colours (as you all know) and that it didn't soak up oil very well. Granted, I didn't use any kind of a mattifier or primer, but I had oil breakthrough within half an hour. :(

Whilst on the topic of Mineral Makeup I am super impressed with my M.A.C Mineralize Foundation. It is a liquid mineral foundation and I must say I am likeing it a lot more than my U/C mineral powder. I just couldn't get use to the texture and not liquid with that one for some reason.

The M.A.C Mineralize gives a light to medium coverage as has a beautiful dewy finish. I love it.

I notice when talking about mineral makeup most people talk about foundations but has anyone else tried M.A.C Mineralize eye shadows and skin finish powders? I have them and they are amazing. Well worth popping into a M.A.C counter to have a looksy.

I have tried some mineral foundation 'bareminerals' I think it was called - It was good, but didn't last as long as they claimed, and was difficult to apply evenly (it was in powder form)

I would be interested in trying again though, with another brand.

I bought Bloom's new mineral foundation in light and it is lovely - blends beautifully and a nice colour (it looks quite warm/gold but still adapts to my pale skin). My only complaint is that it is really hard getting the powder from the jar - I think it needs more or bigger holes in the jar.

Hi everyone, I'm new.
I basically joined this group so I could rave about i.d. Bare Minerals.
I was introduced to it when I had a facial nearly a year ago now. My skin was really bad at the time - breakouts and such. I had never really worn foundation until I suddenly developed acne about 9 months before that, so I guess I was a little clueless in that department. Plus I was poor so I couldn't afford the good stuff.

Anyway, so I had this facial and then the girl applied the make up. I was completely gobsmacked when I saw my skin. It actually looked healthy.
Since then I'm onto my second pot of foundation, gone through 2 brushes, discovered the Primer while in the states and tried out the concealer. My skin is a lot better now so that just sits in my makeup bag.

I cannot stress enough how amazing this stuff is. It takes 2 seconds to apply and mixes with the natural oils in the skin, leaving a natural looking finish. I have to admit it is hard to get used to...I still have my bad days where applying it is concerned, but that comes down to laziness. It's important to wash your brush regularly as the product builds up a lot and doesn't create the same effect as a clean brush will.

Another downer is the price of the stuff in this country. My first pot cost me $70 and the kabuki brush $50 (which I hated and had to ditch)....then I went on holiday to Hawaii and hovered around Sephora, my new home.
The foundation cost $25USD and the Heavenly face brush I think $17, or there abouts. The primer was only $15. So I stocked up!!

But do make the investment. Like I said, a pot of foundation can last about 5-6 months, less is more.

Hope I haven't bored you with this long first post!
I'm off to post in the Benefit thread now.

Love ren.

I must admit that I am not a fan of the Kabuki brush either. Not because of the application but because it somehow irritates my skin  Even if I just use it lightly my skin still feels all prickly & sore. Has anyone else experienced this? So now I just apply with a powder brush.

Yeah I'd like to try it as well, I'd like to pop the cherry! I don't want to use L'Oreal as I will probably have a reaction to it and do prefer other brands.

I am using the Laura Mercier one today. It is great. I think I need the blending brush though as the brush I currently use doesn't 'polish' it on. Instead it seems to make large pores appear on my nose and chin - a quick buff with my hands fixes that. I really like it but wouldn't use it if I was looking for a 'heavier' coverage.

Does anybody know what the Bloom Mineral Brush is made out of hair, as in is it synthetic or real hair?

I think I should probably be using a brush specifically for mineral makeup as it's all I wear, and have had a look at the Laura Mercier one but just wanted to know if there were any slightly cheaper alternatives.

Hi Milo! i think the Bloom Mineral Brush is made of goat hair. (Please correct me If I am wrong!) I am using a kabuki brush for my UC mineral foundation. I bought my kabuki brush from eBay. It's REALLY soft! for me, it's softer than the Bare Escentuals kabuki brush..

Good idea ness.

Milo maybe try to get hold of a nice big kabuki. You'll get a better coverage that way and kind of helps to 'buff' the powder onto the skin.

It's a brush style (ie. powder brush, face brush, kabuki brush) rather than what the bristles are made of. A number of different brands make them - they're great for powders, especially mineral, and bronzers. For an example, see:
http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P61040

Just had a quick look on the Bloom website, looks like their mineral powder brush is made of goat hair:

The kabuki brush I bought from eBay is a generic one. It's called LUSCIOUS KABUKI. I guaranteed this is the BEST and of the softest kabuki brush out there! I've tried many kabuki brushes but this one is far superior.

I think there are so many sellers on eBay selling this kind of kabuki brush. I bought mine from US seller and she's so wonderful! fast shipping also.

EDIT: Please don't think that I am the seller of this brush. I am just very very happy and satisfied with this brush so I shared it with you guys..

I use a kabuki brush from Manicare... I bought it at Priceline & it was around $15 from memory...

The Mirenesse is more sheer. The appplicator is a thick sponge attached to the top of the jar full of powder. Feels a bit strange to use like this & I have no idea how you would clean it. You can't remove the sponge. Still if you can get the trial special it is still a good deal.

No worries! And yep, I think it'd be fine Milo. Just use a light hand, then you can build up if you want. I use a mini kabuki for bronzer - something you don't want to go overboard with! - and it's great.

OK, I just got the Mirenesse Skin Clone Mineral Foundation in the mail & had a bit of confusion about the packaging. When you remove the lid, there is this chunky sponge underneath - but it's stuck there! You actually tap the container upside down & then the powder comes through the sponge. Duh - I was sitting there for 10 minutes trying to get the sponge off :chuckle:

I'm not sure how that is going to go application wise, so see how we go - going to have to play around with this one. I though the sponge would be removable so you could wash it, or even apply the powder with a brush if you wanted to......

Let me know how you go with it bluemelon!! I just ordered some of this myself.

Thought I'd fill you in on how I've gone so far. I've had a go at applying it with a brush, and I found it to be much better than the sponge. With the sponge, I barely got any coverage. The only issue with the brush was that it was a bit difficult getting it to fit in the container, as the container isn't very wide. But I could actually see a difference when applying with the brush.

It's lighter in texture and more sheer than the other brand I've tried (Colores), which gave more of a medium coverage. But because of this, I found that it wasn't that easy to get that 'cakey', overdone look with Mirenesse compared to Colores. So the Mirenesse is more forgiving if you apply too much on your brush initially.

One thing I didn't do though was apply moisturiser beforehand, so any dry and flaky bits became noticeable. So I would recommend moisturising beforehand, and use a brush instead of the powder puff, as you'll end up wasting more powder with the puff.

Yes, I agree - it does need some directions attached! I thought there was a plastic sifter under the sponge so you could apply with the sponge or brush. I found it useless (as I mentioned above).

I used the Mirenesse this morning over my IZ Tinted Daywear. It takes the shine off & is very light, not cakey at all. I tried dusting my face with the sponge still on & it was tricky. I also got little clouds of powder everytime I dadded it onto my face. Must try with the brush next.

Hi everyone! :waving:

I know that this topic has been done to death! But I am in search of the perfect mineral makeup!

I have tried Bare Minerals, and have had heaps of compliments on my skin, and definitely less (or virtually no) breakouts. However, I do find that in heat or humidity I get that itchy feeling from the Bismuth Oxychloride ingrediant. I also find it very very messy to use!

Soooooooo, I am searching for mineral makeup that has no Bismuth Oxychloride, relatively inexpensive, and not so messy to use!! (And of course looks great!)

I have ordered samples of Everyday Minerals and Purely Cosmetics, as I have heard good things about them, but any other tips would be appreciated! (especially in regards to a non-messy makeup!)

Also, does anyone know anything about Botany101? I cant seem to find the website?!

Thanks guys! xxx

I think its more about how you apply the mineral foundation, like you have to lightly buff it on, and you dont need much at all. I like my foundation to have good coverage and even i dont need much.

Thanks Charismatic, I had a look at Pur Cosmetics, but they actually contain Bismuth Oxychloride, which irritates my skin.

Daisy, I have used Bare Minerals (really good unless the Bismuth irritates you!) in both those colours, and to be honest, there's not great deal of difference between the light and fairly light... Have a look on ebay though - some people sell little samples of different colours so you can try them out without forking out all the money.

Mica, titanium dioxide, dimethicone, zinc stearate, boron nitride, zinc oxide, dimethiconol, ascorbic acid, camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract, tocopheryl acetate, bisabolol. May contain: iron oxides (CI 77489,77491,77492,77499), ultramarines (CI 77007).

Have used my Inika samples a few times now and i must say im loving it!!!

You really dont need that much, and after a few moments the coverage is very good! May appear quite thin when you first apply but im guessing it needs to soak into your skin for a moment before it displays the full effect.

Over all i loved it. Felt very light on my skin and looked amazing. Its been very hot in Sydney the past few days (no where near Melb temps but hey, hot enough!) and the foundation did not budge - esp on my sweaty face!!

Very happy with this product - highly recommend you check out some samples!

Excuse the long post, but I found a website listing the ingredients of the following brands and thought people may be interested in the Foundation ingredients. The website also displayed the ingredients for blushes, eye shadows and finishing powders (http://www.signatureminerals.com/ingredient-comparisons.html).

I'm disgusted that these brands are allowed to label their products as mineral foundations - it's very misleading!

So do you ever wear the Loreal Bare Minerals by itself?? I was looking at this the other day and i just felt like i wasn't getting any coverage, even if it was just my hand.

Whats the best way to pick a colour, to suit your skin or a bit darker???

It defiantely gives coverage on it's own, i would say medium to heavy. I would go with what you normally go for ie. if you normally go for the lightest shade, get the lightest shade in this range.

It's got a lot of coverage, more so than anything I have ever worn, even in a solid form. I do like its matte effect and it really does feel like you have nothing on your skin. As VeeE says, best bet is to try and match your skin tone even though it blends well.

Im not to sure on the redness hun, im pretty sure it would but im quite a neutral colour.
It has good coverage, really easy to build. Doesnt wear off like a liquid and i dont get that 4pm oily t zone thing happening.
I went for the lightest shade which is slighlty darker in reality than it looks on adore so good colour match cos it blend and adapts to your skin colour.

Hi everyone

I have just started using Mineral foundation made by Australian brand Minerelle that is totally natural. It's a great product! But I have read alot of people's reviews who rave about ID Bare Minerals make-up and some other brands too like Ultraceutical. Is there anyone who has tried Minerelle but likes another brand better? I'm pretty happy with Minerelle but just interested to know if anyone has tried it and likes something else better?

Also, I have noticed that most other mineral makeups contain sun protection, but I don't think Minerelle does. Is this the case?

Many of the mineral makeups contain an ingredient called Mica. This acts as a natural reflectant too in addition to the protection offered by the titanium dioxide.

I received some samples of Signature Minerals foundation, and unfortunately I'm not that impressed. I was able to find a good colour match, but I found the foundation sunk into any little wrinkle and didn't do anything to enhance the look of my skin.

I also received my samples of Everyday Minerals and I am VERY impressed - both with the packaging and the quality of the product! The only downside was the fact I chose shades that were to light for me for Summer (great for Winter though!), so I have purchased another two sample kits to find one that suits better.
The foundation went on easily and made my skin look flawless, covering blemishes and wrinkles, and evening out my skin tone. I wore the Semi-Matte foundation in "Multi-Tasking Neutral", and it kept my face shine free all day - I didn't even have to blot! As it is more a Winter shade for me, I upped the colour with some bronzer - which usually gives me really bad shine within a few hours, but with the Everyday Minerals underneath it stayed perfect. :champagne:

I will definitely be repurchasing this brand :)

The reality is, many things (not just cosmetics) have stabilisers/fillers in them, and depending on what they are/the amounts, they may or may not be listed.

All we can do is be aware of wht is in the products, and if we have a reaction, try to eliminate the possible causes. That's where things like those lists come in handy.

Yeah I agree, the L'Oreal one should probably be called "powder foundation" or something. Calling it mineral foundation is pretty misleading, considering that most people associate mineral foundation with being the "so pure you could sleep in it" kind of stuff.

I'm new around here but just wanted to ask a few questions

I have used BE, youngblood and everyday minerals in the past, but lately my skin has become ultra oily and I'm having issues with my foundation. It just slides into the oily areas.. yech! What can I use to help combat this???

Also I'm thinking of trying ultraceuticals as I hear this is better for redness?? If I use fairly light in BE what would that be in UC? There isn't a stockist close to me that I could get to in the next few days.

Thanks

I use the ultraceuticals currently and yep it does cover redness quite well. The shades are on the "lighter" side I think, and because theres only a few shades I wear the "tan" while with other brands I'll usually be matched to the lighter end of the shades. Not that this is helping you I'm sure!!

I got a sample of the Jane Iredale on saturday from my BT and tried that this morning. I really really liked it. And the sample comes in a tiny little pot that looks just like a MAC eye colour disc in the plastic casing, its great and very generous. YAy!

Anyone else tried the Jane Iredale?

No I haven't tried a primer as yet, would love any recommendations. My skin has only recently become oily and bleurgh! Not much difference in the breakouts issue (you shouldn't have a problem with either), but UC is more matte than BE so you may prefer it if you don't like shine.

Kate (Staff)

Oh, maybe you have a point there.
I did read somewhere that compact powders have more ingredients that hold it together so that it can actually be compressed.
I get a nice matt coverage from the Loreal foundation.
I just have an issue with my oily skin coming through far too soon.

Hey ameliorate, I recall Kate once advising us that mineral foundation won't stop oil coming through - if you're oily, you're oily. An unfortunate problem I know very well!

So you might just need to re-powder later in the day or use blotting tissues to get rid of the shine. Prepping with a mattifying primer (there are some that aren't quite as exxy as the Dermadoctor one) might help also.

Hey, thanks for the reply.
Maybe it's just the foundation that's not working for me. I have to blot every hour or so. It's terrible.:shakehead:
I'll have to have a look at some of the primers that everyone has recommended.
And I thought I might try out the MAC Loose Blot Powder. It's within my budget and seems to be good-quality.

Just to change track a little - does anyone 'decant' their mineral powder for travel? What do you put it in? I have a smallish tub but it is not really flat and I would like something pretty and flat for travel.
I've not tried them but I know Everyday Minerals sell empty large mixing jars?

It looks pretty flat to me :)

Yeah, I've been reading some other threads about primers. And the Tease Zone Gel sounds great! :)
I'm worried that it might be a bit pricey though...
Could you give me an approximate price for it?

Hello amerliorate :waving:

I am such a fan of the dermadoctor tease zone - my skin is really oily but also quite sensitive and this is by far the best oil control product I have ever used. It is about $75 but in my opinion worth it as cheaper lines do not offer something of this quality or effectiveness. I am feeling very impatient though because I ran out and Adore have none in stock for a week or so! (Yes I love it so much I am losing sleep over its lack of availability :chuckle:)

:chuckle: So it's THAT great huh? Aw...I wish it just wasn't so expensive. I would love to try it out though.

I usually need to blot in the office around 11-12 but with this I can wait until about 2-3pm. Then I blot with a tissue and add a thin layer of the dermadoctor over the top of my skin and it is set for another few hours. Just fabulous. Perhaps try to get a sample?

A sample would be great. I'll have to try that. :)

I would offer you some but I ran out a couple of weeks ago and waiting for their suppliers to supply Adore so Adore can supply me!

Aw, you're too kind! :kissing: But I really couldn't ask you for a sample.
Plus, postage would also be a problem for me.

I received my Everyday Minerals samples today, so i'm eager to try these out.

I have a few primers at home so i was wondering which one would suit the mineral foundation better

a)Modelco face base

b) Clarins instant smoothing

c) A shimmery Borjois one, kinda tacky on its own

I use the ModelCo most days with Mineral and it works pretty well! I can get a bit oily towards the end of the day though... I reckon the clarins would work a treat!

I have heard Sheer Cover is pretty good, but have yet to try it. I have just purchased a 1 month sampler over the net - www.sheercover.com.au

Hi Jaime. Yeah, they didn't look overly large when viewing on the net. I would really like to give a good mineral make-up a go as my skin seems to dry out if I use foundation and powder all the time. Can anyone recommed? Also, I have never given a primer a go before either. Is this worth a try?

The everyday mineral samples are very small but they say that you are supposed to get 6 applications out of them. I was kinda shocked at how small they are though, lucky they are free! :whipcrack:

Unfortunately they aren't free - costs you $49.95. 6 only? Doesn't sound like much does it? Hmmmm, will give the trial a go, but sounds like I may have to find something else........
