View Full Version : "Burberry vs The Chavs"

I'm watching Austar and there's a show on Lifestyle right now called "Burberry vs The Chavs" - this is the summary: "For a top fashion brand it's the ultimate nightmare - when all the wrong sort of people start wearing your brand. Burberry is the epitome of high fashion but now its distinctive beige tartans have become popular with so-called chavs.".
I for one totally agree with this - as soon as a label starts to be worn (and COPIES start to be worn) by the likes of the WAGs, chavs, bogans, whatever, it just loses its beauty. Despite the lovely ads with Rachel Weisz, and the tradition and history of the brand, a Burberry sunvisor on a bleach-blonde Jordan lookalike is the death knell to a brand, I think.
What do you reckon?

Certainly loses it's exclusivity. There is a market in Hong Kong where you flick through the designer catalogue and order a copy of it. I couldnt bring myself to even look at it but they were everywhere and very popular.
I have a Burberry Blue Line handbag which is a little different from the classic UK Burberry. These are made in Japan under the Sanyo group and produced for the Asian retail market. About half the cost of UK Burberry.

Apparently people from the UK think it's hilarious that Burberry is considered some of the Best of British Class in the US because for them it is all Chav, lol.

Yes Luisa I found the same thing in Thailand. All brands too! Lv is big over there. The funny thing I found was Burberry bags with Louis Vuitton cherries all over them:shakehead: :chuckle: at least make them semi decent fakes!! :whipcrack:
Would have been very interesting to see. Hope they do repeats :clapping:

I have a question and it may seem a ery "blonde" thing to ask but WHAT THE HELL IS A CHAV?? I mean i understand they are bogans and I know what they are (der:whistle:) but where the heck did the term come from?? and how does one pronouce it ??ie( ch-av, ch-ay-v, sch-av???)

My darling, one pronounces it like so - with the hard 'ch' sound - CHav.
No eye deer where the term came from but it sure is funny!

From Wikipedia (yes, I had to Google it)....
Chav or Charv/Charver even Chavster (male) and Chavette (female) ('ch' pronounced as in chair) is a mainly derogatory slang term in the United Kingdom for a subcultural stereotype fixated on fashions derived from American Hip-Hop fashions and stereotypes such as gold jewellery and designer clothing combined with elements of working class British street fashion. Chavs are generally considered to have no respect for society, and to be ignorant or unintelligent. The term appeared in mainstream dictionaries in 2005.[1][2]
The defining features of the chav clothing in the Burberry pattern (notably a now-discontinued baseball cap) and from a variety of other casual and sportswear brands. Tracksuits, hoodies, track suit bottoms, and baseball caps are particularly associated with this stereotype. Response to the term has ranged from amusement to criticism that it is a new manifestation of classism.[3] The term has also been associated with delinquency, the "ASBO Generation", "Hoodie culture", and "yob culture".

I was going to post the same thing. I think a lot of LV is down right ugly and Burberry is just plain. Nice enough, but nothing to get excited about.
(However I do have a very high opinion of Burberry perfumes!)

Good grief no!
The real stuff is good, even though I don't actually like either LV or Burberry. You know that the people who have outlaid the moolah for the real deal appreciate what they have acquired, where chavs/bogans are jsut saying 'Look at me! Aren't I posh as?!'

Geeze I am the furthest thing from Posh imaginable! Although I like my brands I can just as easily go to k-mart and buy myself a top and t-shirt. In fact at times I embrace my inner bogan (tracky dacks and ugg boots anyone?). Is Jordan (aka Katie Price) a chav then? She's loaded but hardly classy? Oh and I have thought of a new name for Victoria Beckham (Sticktoria)!!

Truly classy people just ARE classy, it's just how they are, chavs think that they can buy it.

About the burberry thing. It's the same in Holland. I see tons of (stupid) guys with fake burberry clothes and caps, most of it looks really tacky. I always feel the need to slap these blokes. I absolutely HATE people who think that they are better than other people just based upon what they have material wise!!
I had a particularly rude sales girl from a Chanel counter once ask me if my Louis Vuitton Pappilon was fake! She then said she had bought hers off e-bay so it was definitely real! Firstly it was none of her damn business and secondly what was she going to do about it if it was fake? Her comment played on me a little and the next time I visited ther store I walked up to her and slapped my Louis Vuitton receipt and certificate of authenticity on the counter. However I didn't make a huge deal of it but waited for my oppurtunity to get even!!
She was filling out a file card for me and where it said age she ticked the box 40-50! I am 29 and as far as I know I don't look 40 to 50! I politely corrected her and then inquired after her age. She said she was 25! I simply replied "Geeze you've had a hard life haven't you" and walked off!

Meeeeow! Good on you PCC! God what a hosebeast she sounds like. Fancy questioning a customer on whether or not their bag was real - uhh, yea, that's the way you're going to make a sale!
I have often found that women at cosmetics counters look MUCH older than they really are. I don't know what the deal is but it's not an advertisement for their product, that's for sure!! My local Elizabeth Arden girl is really lovely and very pretty, but I nearly fell off my stool when she told me she was only 26. I would have pegged her at about 31-32. I also notice it when I watch Girls of the Playboy Mansion (don't judge!). When the girls have their full makeup on, they look in their late 20s-early 30s, but with no makeup they look very pretty and fresh if a little bit tired. Now, BY NO MEANS am I advocating wearing no makeup, heavens no! But I think this all proves that less is more, and a skillful minimalistic application always ends up better than applying every product you have all at once.

I don't know if it's just here in Tassie but most of the counter people are either really young and inexperienced or know little about the product they are selling or on the older side and very bossy and authoritarian.
I honestly dread going to places like Myer. Most of the time I almost get bowled over by sales assistants running towards me to try and make a sale before anyone else does.
It also really annoys me that some staff are overly nice to me (I am thinking because I spend a bit of cash in there) and treat my friends like they don't exist (because they don't spend a lot). This is why I prefer the indivdual boutiques and pharmacies with the big brands.
Luisa Brown

All the counters want to "make budget" PCC and therefore hungry for your dollars! If you can get better service and feel more comfortable in the smaller shops and pharmacies then go for it. It feels more genuine too don't you agree?

Back to Burberry V's The Chavs -
I think I might be one!! I was watching Wife Swap on Austar last week and there was a woman on there who had so many similarities to me and she was called a chav!
Here are some of the things I do:
*Dress my Maltese puppy up in designer oufits to walk down the street.
*Always have the designer sunnies on my head even if it's raining.
*Carry the designer bag even with my trackies on.
*Play spot the fake even when I having a conversation with someone else!
*Buy something just because of the lable even if I will never use or wear it.
*Copy looks I have seen on fashion icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O.
