If you are like me and are sensitive to Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) it can at first be hard to find alternaltive products to use. Don't give up! They are out there you just need to learn to read ingrediant lists. I thought an easier solution was to publish a list here in a dedicated thread.
Why change to SLS free?
You should def give it burl if you have any sort of skin condition that tends to be itchy or dry.
To use on newborn baby skin.
You suffer sore/itchy dandruff.
You have dry skin.
You prefer to use natural products.

Thanks for that Medusa and Fusspot. I can't believe how many skincare prducts have sls in it. I was really disappointed to see most of my cleansers from The Body Shop have this in it. Needless to say I have stopped using them as my skin goes quite red after using these!

personally i try to steer away from sls's as there r other alternatives & we just don't have to have them in products , yet it is quite limiting if u like to try lots of different things- bloody annoying i would say :chuckle:

I totally agree! I have stopped using my TBS powder cleanser because it has SLS in it and honestly my skin just didn't like it. My face went a little red and irritated after I used it and it took me a couple of days to work out what was causing the irritation as I often don't read the ingredients at the time of purchase because I'm too busy talking at a hudred miles an hour to the SA. I am sticking with my Dermalogica ultracalming cleanser and professional skincare without SLS in it from now on!

M, this is is a fantastic thread - well done. It is such a common ingrediant, it can be hard to buy products without it.
Another Australian natural brand is Simplicite, who do a gorgeous, and divine smelling range without sls.

What about foaming cleansers without sls? These seem hard to find. Even a lot of the dermatological chemist brands like Ego, Dermaveen and the foaming version of Cetaphil have sls in them!

I'm not sensitive to SLS but I don't like it in products anyway. It's just used for foaming a product isn't it?

It makes foam and also acts as a cleanser by dissolving oil.

I didn't even know what SLS was until I read about it on the forum. Now I think anything with SLS in it is a dirty word! Is it bad because it's harsh on the skin?
Medusa
22-08-2007, 06:47 PM
Its only a nasty for some people. It can be a skin irritant as the SLS can be very drying. If I use a shampoo with SLS my scalp starts itching & flaking like you would not believe. If I use a hand wash with it my knuckles get so dry & irritated the skin actually cracks open!
By all means if you use products with SLS & it's fine for you then go ahead. Don't stop on my behalf. I only started this thread for those of us that are sensitive to them & always on the search for SLS free prodcuts.

Oh Trash don't get me started! The Cowshed range is amazing. Don't be under any illusions about smell etc as the smells aren't mind blowing but the products are fabulous. The shampoo and conditioner are my all time favourites. I love them. They sell a travel pack at Kit which costs $90 and you get the shampoo, conditioner, bosy wash and body lotion in 100ml sizes in a fake cowskin bag. You can also now purchase the 100ml travel sizes for $20 each seperately.

I wandered into a local health food shop today, and I couldn't believe I have never been in - they had SO much great stuff there! They even gave me a free zinc test (I'm low on zinc :redcheeks: ). Anyway they had a couple of brands that had SLS-free shampoos and bodywashes, but I can't remember all the names! :redcheeks: I wish I had written some stuff down! Anyway the one I do remember was called "Alba" and their products were packaged in really cute, hip pink and orange packaging. They had things like passionfruit shower gel, mango & papaya body butter, gardenia conditioner etc. Really gorgeous stuff! They contained "Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate", which I just googled and apparently it's a skin-friendly plant-derived ingredient which acts in a similar way to Sodium Laureth Sulfate (which is not plant-derived) but without the harsh effects on the skin.
Grrr there were two others I wanted to post about but I cant remember!! One was based on coconut oil and they had hand lotions in Pineapple & Coconut, and Tangerine & Lemongrass. The other one was packaged in these great sleek, modern opaque plastic bottles and they had a beautiful pink grapefruit body wash and lotion! Will try to get the names at some point!

Thanks Medusa for referring me over to this thread. I thought I might just post about some of the problems I've had & compare with others to see if SLS products are the issue, and find out what experiences others have had with products.
Pretty much, I have oily skin - I get oily not just on my T-zone, but also on my chin and cheeks. I also have an oily scalp. For about 10 years, I have been battling with an itchy flaky scalp. I thought it was dandruff & have tried every antidandruff shampoo that has come out on the market (Head and Shoulders, Nizoral, Selsun Blue etc). My background is in the health/medical area, so I've had easy access to all the medicated shampoos & have tried the recommended treatments that I have knowledge of (cortisone, coal tar, salicylic acid etc). Cortisone does help, but it comes back eventually. I've also tried the salon brands that have an antidandruff shampoo in their range. But after months of trying each brand - nothing works.
I guess I can now generalise it to 'seborrheic dermatitis', because the past few years it hasn't just been my scalp that has been itchy and flaky - it's also happening on other small areas of my face. But I also have a history of eczema & I have got it quite badly around my ears and also on the side of my face around my jawbone (the areas where it isn't oily). I also have it on my hands.
Does anyone else have similar problems with oily skin and itching/flaking/redness, and if so, has using SLS free products helped? Or any anti-dandruff preparations that have actually worked? Also, is there anything that is good at cleansing an oily scalp but doesn't dry it out, because seborrheic dermatitis depends on oily skin, so I figure if I can control the oilies then maybe it will improve it.
Many thanks:)

Bluemelon, I don't get an itchy (but not flaky) scalp except for when I use supermarket shampoos - perhaps because the sls content in them is higher than in salon products?
However, my skin and scalp are super oily too, and prone to redness so I know how you feel. I have not tried an sls-free routine but I do find many foaming cleansers make my skin feel tight and itchy but do not control oil at all. On the other hand, many non-foaming milks are not enough to keep my skin from getting congested so it can be very frustrating! I am currently trialling Ultraceuticals cleansing milk and it is excellent for removing makeup and oiliness as well as my invisible zinc sunscreen which can be a pain to remove. Whether it prevents congestion and blackheads is uncertain yet, as I have only been using if for a week. I will let you know how it goes, though.
And I agree with Medusa - definately try the Alchemy range for your hair.
Also, I did not know that seborrheic dermatitis is dependant on oily skin. Can you explain this a bit more to me, if you don't mind? :)
bluemelon
08-10-2007, 08:35 PM
Thanks Sapphire:)
With regards to seborrheic dermatitis, there are two parts to the theory behind it - I don't think anyone knows exactly what the cause is! One is that it is due to some abnormality of the oil glands, causing an increased sebum production. This is because it seems to mainly occur on areas where there are more oil glands - the scalp (what is referred to as dandruff), eyebrows, eyelids, creases of the nose, outer part of the ear. The other part of the theory is that there is a particular type of yeast which grows in these oil-prone areas, resulting in irritation of the skin. This is why a lot of these new antidandruff shampoos now contain an antifungal agent (since yeasts belong to the fungus family).
Hope that makes sense. It's such a horrible skin problem to have - we're in the same boat!:shakehead:

Glad this thread popped back up, have wanted to tell you about my eye saga!
As some of you would know I have extrememely sensitive eyes and have had a real tough time of late with my right eye. Not sure whether it is allergy related but I would wake up with the most red, sore inflammed and almost cracked skin on top of my lid and underneath. The only thing I could use on it was my Nivea eye makeup remover to cleanse and the Creme de la mer. I had been using a special hydrocortisone ointment made for the eye area and although this calmed the area down (only slightly) it take such a long time to go away and always feels dry and irritated.
Well. I had a tube of Hamilton Skin Therapy Light Cream that has recently been launched. Had a look at the ingredients and also noted that it was free from fragrance, colour, lanolin, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate. I put the teensiest amount on last night and had an almost miracle result this morning! I have just put on some more and hope the last bit of dryness disappears.
It is a dermatological formula that helps dry and irritated skin, dermatitis, eczema and rosacea. It does contain paraffin but also shea butter and vitamin E. Something in it is working. I can't believe I had this under my nose and hadn't thought of trying it!

Wow, that is fantastic. Hamiltons are a great brand (and I'm not just biased because they are here in Adelaide;)). I got to go on a tour of their labs a few years ago & was very impressed. I should keep their products in mind more often as well - they have some great stuff.

I had been using a special hydrocortisone ointment made for the eye area and although this calmed the area down (only slightly) it take such a long time to go away and always feels dry and irritated.

found some SLS free hair products in priceline that i had not seen before - the brand is 'fre' - they are free from sulphates, parabens, patroleums and parrafins. they were hidden down on the bottom shelf at the end of an aisle.
I tried the intensive rejuvenating shampoo and conditioner for the first time today and am very happy so far.

I have been using the Surkin hand wash and whilst it is good I think I prefer the Natural Instinct one.
The ingrediants are very similar & I think they smell the same.
Surkin has nicer packaging but I buy the 1litre bottle & decant the hand wash into various dispensers around the house, so that doesn't really matter.
The main point of difference I think it that the Natural Instincts one is creamier & lathers up more.
The price is the same.

I'm trying to be aware of what ingrediants are in my products, SLS is in alot of them! I had a few questions that you girls might know the answer to.
- what is the effect of SLS on acne prone skin?
- is sodium laureth sulfate the same as sodium lauryl sulfate?
- is there any truth in what i've read on the internet that SLS causes cancer, mouth ulcers or stomach ulcers? etc. i.e - what are the negative health impacts, if any?
Is there a list of ingredients somewhere that are used in products but are bad for us? (not SLS, but other irritants, etc to look out for)
Thanks :kissing:

Re your second question, a few years ago I read that the laureth versions is pretty much harmless on skin unless you have an allergy to it - as many people do. The Lauryl is supposed to be much harsher and not good on the skin (unless I have confused the laureth and lauryl!)
I think that with sls (laureth) it is not cancer causing but can cause irritations on some skins. Have you experienced a reaction to products containing this?
No reactions Sapphire, but my
Face
skin feels stripped of moisture and is tight after I cleanse.
After cleansing, the skin around my nose is red and irritated until calmed with moisturiser.
Body
skin can be dry/flaky, particularly on legs, elbows, feet
Hair
every time i shampoo it feels "squeaky" clean and prone to breakage.
Can these be attributed to SLS? All of my cleansing products (shampoo, body wash, face wash) contain SLS as the second ingredient.
My skintype is normal as is my hair - no concerns with dryness, oilyness, acne, etc.

i am pretty sure medusa or maybe it was Luisa , that set the record straight , it for the most part on some people only an irritant & can cause skin conditions because of , it can also be drying , it is worth stopping all sls's for a month or so & see if there r any changes
a few of us have contributed quite a few products that r sls free within this thread , good luck
both of those r foam boosters
Medusa

Emmy, I wouldn't be worried about SLS causing cancer. The reaction if any is more a drying one. It can overstrip the skin's natural oils.
If you are looking to cancel out another chemical I would make it Mineral Oil or Liqiudium Parrifaum. Its just a cheap filler made from petrochemical by product. It makes products feel silky. Its just necessary when there are many better & more natural alternaltives to use.
Thanks fusspot and Medusa!
The problem is that most cheap products contain SLS and its all i can afford.

If you have normal skin then you can easily pull off a milk/cream based cleanser. Most all of these are SLS free.
If you want a super cheap and natural eye make up remover then go to the supermarket & get yourself a bottle of Grapeseed oil (near the olive oil). It works like a treat and the residual will act as an atioxidant eye serum in one! You can even use the oil in your salad dressing too. :chuckle:

Hi emmy,
I agree with Medusa's response on checking out health food stores - these are amazing for more temperamental skin types and the prices are good too. Look out for Akin, Trilogy, Natio (check for sls in their cleansers though as I am not sure here), Avene, TinderBox, and Natural Instinct.
Re your normal skin, I again second M on her recommendations of cleansing milks. Check back through this thread and also do a search on cleansing milks or creams for some Adore suggestions. If you are on a budget, try Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser for your normal skin, and Cetaphil. Nivea also do a milk cleanser but I have not tried this. All the aforementioned products are available in chemists and supermarkets.
Also, watch out for mineral oil, as M said, but also propolyne glycol.
:glee::glee::glee:
Fusspot ( :hugs: )sent me some samples to try, which I will share my thoughts, although I'll say right off that I can now tell the difference in my skin between an SLS and non-SLS product.
Sukin Cream Cleanser
Felt smooth and silky on my skin, gave my face a good massage and enjoyed the experience (rather than using my cheap foaming cleansers from supermarket). Rinsed it off, my face felt cleansed, but 'plump' - wasn't stripped like it normally is. It also smelt nice - could definitely smell the vanilla.
Sukin Facial Scrub
I liked the texture of this, smelt of essential oils and my skin felt smooth after his - I really like physical exfoliants that I can feel 'scrubbing' but this was definitely gentler than the Apricot scrubs in the supermarket.
Sukin Toner
Gentler than the current one I'm using. Has a nutty smell to me, and am quite impressed that it comes in a mist which I can spray.
I haven't moisturised as yet - as I don't feel the need, my skin doesn't feel stripped, tight or dry. I can't stop touching my smooth skin! :penguin: (yes I know its bad). I also got a sample of the SLS free Neutrogena cream cleanser.
I am very much interested in buying from the Sukin range - particularly interested in their other products for hair and body, and trying their moisturiser - perhaps their night one and using I.Z as a morning one. I've had a peek at their website too! :penguin:
Am I right in saying I can buy the Sukin products at chemists? How much do they retail for? (I'm willing to pay up to about $20 per product)

Thanks Luisa B - was the top list for the gentle foaming cleanser?
I would have thought the tricolsan would be in the gel one for oily skin. Strange!

It was for the gentle foaming cleanser Sapphire. I could not find such a comprehensive list for the gel one though so you might indeed find some in there.

I went looking for the Sukin range at two pharmacies and one health food store. Does anyone know if there is a particular chain that stocks it?

Soaps - I had posted this in splurge/steal thread too -
http://www.sanctumaustralia.com/organic-soap-cedar.html
http://www.blueearth.co.nz/products.php?category=10 (one of my favourite producers of soaps)
http://www.ecostore.co.nz/products/b...y-products.cfm
http://www.trilogyproducts.com/range.asp?pid=11 (this may be available at Adore, since they now stock Trilogy )
http://www.livingnature.com/catalog/...&r=vw&cid=2204 (they have these massive cleansing bars and then smaller soaps - which are just beautiful )
Amaranth's bought the macadamia soap I think from - http://www.sunshinetraders.com/ (not 100% what thesecontain but should be pretty good if they don't have harders, chemical fillers etc ...)
I can't wait to try http://www.beebeauty.com/27-soaps.html
http://www.herbfarm.co.nz/info_page.php?info_id=7 (so good and the way the colours form on these bars are cool! )
The ingredients that are NOT contained in the soap I use that do not create masses of mess, scum etc in the shower or at the sink is the following (Just to name a few):
no petro chemicals
no animal fats or tallow
no syntethic dyes
no propylene glycol
no SLS

SLS is nasty, my scalp goes crazy when ever I have used it. Itchy, red and flaky. I like natural instincts shampoo or the jurlique shampoo.

pinknaturegal - i used the jurlique sandalwood shampoo around a year and a half ago and i thought it had SLS or maybe it was ammonium laureth sulfate? Not sure if ALS is the same as SLS though. Does anyone know the difference?

Hi Sapphire, it still has the Borders price sticker on it but I have not seen it there for close to two years. It was printed in 2005. It was written with the Australian market in mind as it quotes prices in Australian dollars despite the two authors being English.
