Does anyone ever have a hunt through their local op shops? I always intend to but don't often get around to it. I don't like the smell of them, but apart from that, it seems soooo time-consuming! But I have a friend who wears heaps of secondhand clothes (she's not poor either, works in corporate for a bank) and she always looks so cool, Sienna-style. I have it in my head that if I only had a look, I'd end up with fab vintage t-shirts and wicked flares, but in reality whenever I venture in there I only ever find 80s jackets in a size 6. Should I bite the bullet and plan to devote a whole day to op-shopping??

oh absolutely! Make a list of locations before you leave the house, and plot a path, so you don't end up doubling back.

We have limited op shops here in the 'port, but I just got some awesome pants (can't really describe the fabric) yesterday for $3.

It's time consuming, can be smelly, but is sooooooo worth it when you get home with bargains. :glee:

Oh im the same! I would love to find some little treasures, but i never get around to it, and the smell does put you off a bit!

Does anyone have any op shops that they always find a treasure in?

Oz i think you should bite the bullet and do it - what's there to lose?

Hmmm ive never been an op-shoper. I always imagine the clothes and styles to be more boho which isnt me. I do think its a skill though, because I imagine thered be a lot of junk and smell. I have a friend also who is really into op-shopping, and I have to say one or two of the pieces shes found have made me go wow once or twice before. I just dont think I have the patience for it....

I'm not boho at all either, that's another thing. I either like a really classic look (turtlenecks, jeans, slim skirts, ballet flats etc) or a tomboyish look (jeans, tee, hoodie and Chucks) for when I'm hanging out or at the pub. So I'm not really even sure what I would be looking for - just some cool tops I guess! Hmmm I guess I should just do it...I might drag along another op-shop virgin so I don't feel so out of place.

I've had some good clothing scores in op shops over the years, but once I got an idea about what styles and eras I liked I started going straight to the 'handpicked' vintage shops and eBay. Yeah, you pay a bit extra but they've already done all the hard work for you!

I do buy other stuff from ops though, especially homewares (like crystal, cup & saucer sets etc) and bags. We also have a great Salvos just up the road, I've bought furniture from them before.

I have my regular op shops, particularly one I walk past every time I leave the house. I have never failed to poke my head in there, lol (it's a friendly place, I know all the women who volunteer there). Popping in regularly I have found is the key--my eye immediately goes to anything new and dismisses the stuff I've already seen. I just bought a beautiful coat there for 4.00. Clothes scores are less common for me than household goods, eccentric items etc.. I have original art hanging on my wall from this shop.

For ones not part of my regular haunts I will go out once a year or so if in the mood and do a big op-shop crawl. Otherwise I can't be bothered pouring through clothes. Like RBB said though Salvos has been great for furniture. I have 2 cream leather couches that cost me 240.00 and I love them.

I Lurve op shops & have way too much stuff from them. :redcheeks:

You have already narrowed the search for yourself by clearly stating your style. You just need to train your eye to scan the racks & only pick up this stuff.

Yep it's me M!! Changed my name in an attempt to avoid large amounts of humiliation.

And MAN, I TRIED to do a search but it wouldn't search the word "op", apparently it's too short a word or something. Anyhoo, thanks M!

EDIT: Can't believe how dumb I am, I actually POSTED in the other thread and even talked about the same friend! Talk about an idiot...

I've never been very good at it. I do try, but never seem to find anything I'd actually wear (except for a great pair of jeans I got for $1 not that long ago, score!!!). I think it comes down to a bit of luck too, being in an op shop at the right time. Maybe?
