I love to make my house smell nice. I am always on the lookout for essential oils, fragrant oils, scented candles, fragrance diffusers and beautiful smelling room sprays. I particularly like making my bedroom smell heavenly at night before bed. There's nothing nicer than reading a chapter of my book whilst being enveloped by beautiful scents before going off to sleep.
Do you have any favourite things to make your house smell nice?

hmmmmm i agree!
I mainly rely on candles to do the job - they smell yummy and look great too.
I dont really like burning those essence sticks as they are too smoky smelling for my liking...and oil burner are too messy for me.
I also love having fresh flowers around for some beautiful scents like gardenia and freesia.

I am loving the Apsley and Company fragrance diffusers (available at Myer). They are generous sized bottles of home fragrance with bamboo sticks you submerge in the fragrance. So far I have tried the following:
Vanilla Bean
Vanilla Sugar
Spicy Pear
Pomegranate
Water Lily
Fig
I also love mixing essential oils and putting them in my electric oil burner. I was very fortunate to receive a box of more than 200 pure essential oils for Christmas last year. I have had so much fun reading up on all the oils and making different blends up with them.
A little pharmacy i visit make their own fragrant oils and they have the most divine selection of flavours. Some of my favourites include:
Jellybean
Strawberries & Cream
Vanilla cupcake
I am also using a gorgeous long lasting room spray by Archipelago (from Kit) in Pomegranate at the moment. I can't believe how long the scent lingers!!

Tim Tam I can't stand incense. I feel like i'm going to choke when I am put into a room with it burning. It reminds me of my school days when we went to the Cathedral for church and the smell of incense was so over powering it made a lot of the girls sick!
Luisa Brown

I also like a fragranced home! I love the Apsley & Co bamboo thingies, I have the pomegranate one and plan to buy more. They are lovely and quite elegant. I also have their fig mini candles.
I have a huge collection of essential oils which I combine to burn. Judy Chapman wrote a book called "Aromatherapy - recipes for your oil burner" which has some great combinations. My husband will take it upon himself to put it on! He also keeps me supplied with fresh flowers however this week I have some beautiful blooms of home grown old fashioned roses which look and smell divine.
I do also like room sprays, if anyone knows of other brands (will be checking out that one at Kit pinkcupcake) that are worth trying, let me know. I am using a couple from Hong Kong store Shanghai Tang at the moment.

pinkcupcake i know what you mean about incense! i dont know how a smell like that is appealing?
these essential oils are intriguing me! do you use regular oil burner (ie with the tea lights)? i read in another post you have an electric oil burner pinkcupcake, how does that work?
pinkcupcake
11-11-2006, 08:19 PM
Yes Tim Tam an ordinary tea light oil burner will do the trick. I received an In Essence electric oil burner for Christmas last year. The only difference with the electric ones is that they plug into a power point and no candles are required. With the electric ones you still put the water and oils in the top.
You can buy the electric oil burners at Myer for around $60. You just have to remember that the electric oil burners need to be turned off as they are an electrical appliance. I have noticed that with my electric oil burner the scent seems to be a lot stronger than if I use tea light one.:rabbit:
Luisa Brown
11-11-2006, 09:25 PM
Yes, the smell is more potent from an electric burner and as pinkcupcake advises, you still need to put water in the dish.
I suppose the benefit of using proper essential oils is that they have a theraputic effect on your mood. There are many books on the subject to give you a basic idea of their properties. That book I mentioned earlier has great "recipes" for different moods and occasions. They are derived from different sources, be it the flower, leaves, root, etc. Some require fewer drops as they can give you a headache!
Enjoy :hearts:

Skipping through Target today I found the most beautiful home frragrance bottles ever. I am going to go back and get one tomorrow. They came in huge 500ml bottles with the old fashioned atomiser on them to spray with! The range has three scents vanilla & honey, lavender and Olive. They look divine and smell great and they are only $19.95 each!

I am an aromatherapy nut and am pedantic with my home smelling beautiful according to my mood, health, time of day or for entertaining.
Although I adore burning candles all around the house and oils, I predominately use my breathe systems. They clean the indoor air, ionise and humidify by processing water within unit combined with a water based aromatherapy oil. All oils have a tea tree base, which is anti-bacterial, and variety of fragrances. I am addicted to the lavender, green apple, jasmin & the grapefruit with lime. The air inside becomes so artic fresh and subtly scented that visitors always comment on how calm, clear, and relaxing the atmosphere is.:hearts:
Luisa Brown

They sound fantastic charismatic! I am an aromatherapy lover too, have about 40 essential oils. Like to burn them but they have many wonderful theraputic uses too. Have about 10 books on the subject and have "created" lots of wonderful potions.
charismatic
13-01-2007, 12:26 AM
LB I also have many books and use the oils topically as well as burning them. at times i add a few drops of orange oil to a litre of water a drink over the period of a day as it is such a great pickup. Don't get me started!!!

Apologies for my typing, it is obvious I am totally exhausted. By the way the orange oil is a good pick me up, not a "cheap pickup". :o

On a serious note, please do be careful about ingesting oils, they practice it quite a bit in the UK but for some reason tell you to avoid it here.

I like Aromatherapy too! I have a huge box of pure essential oils. However I am just reading a book loaned to me by the Lovely Luisa Brown and can't wait to try out some of the recipes.
When I was really ill one of my nurses would burn all sorts of lovely concoctions in my hospital room and they really did have a huge calming effect on me.
I must say my aromatherapy knowledge is very basic and I really haven't got a lot of knowledge about it but I love my oils.
What brand of oils do you think are best? My box of 200 are by Inessence.

Hi PCC,
I am not surprised you enjoy aromatherapy oils. Inessence are Australia's largest producer who not only have oils but also have beautiful body and bathing products.
Eureole are also an ethical Australian producer. The Company is run by 2 fab females on 200 acres/hectares??? at Eden, NSW. Additionally they source the very best herbs and spices from the iconic locations around the world.
All their products are therapeutic grade and beautiful.
Balanced Essentials is another beautiful Australian company with therapeutic grade oils and beauty products. Their aromatherapy sulphate free soaps are to die for. Each soap takes 8 weeks to makeand come in mood blends ie, uplifting, calming, vital, sensual.
A little bit of knowledge can be dangerous! :chuckle:

Proper theraputic grade essential oils will have an AUST "L" or "R" number which means that they are registered with the TGA. In Essence are lovely oils but better value ones are from the Oil Garden. They have a green label and many are packaged in 25ml sizes. They are actually owned by In Essence!
Have fun with your oils and recipes!

I think I have mentioned this before but a little pharmacy in Hobart make their own home fragrance oils. I know they are not in the same league as Essential oils but boy do they smell gorgeous! I am quite obsessed with them.
They make the most unreal scents such as jellybean, raspberries and cream, vanilla birthday cake, Roasted apples, Vanilla and cinnamon, chocolate pudding and spicy pear. Ok so my house smells like a lolly shop most of the time but they are so nice. They also make a lot of not as sweet ones but as I am a sweet junkie I tend to stick to those!

Yeah I was actually thinking that if anyone was prone to headaches, they probably wouldn't be a great idea because they are very strong, especially when you're sitting/standing/lying close to one. I have mine turned up to level five though, you can turn them down to one which I imagine would be fairly unintrusive.

A lot of times I think it depends on the fragrance too. We have a lily of the valley spray at work (gets a fair bit of use, thanks to some customers) but it doesn't make me too bad, other than a little blocked up if we use it too heavily.
The vanilla ones are woeful for me, even on 1, we had one once, lasted an hour. Same goes for any 'green' scented ones. Really sh*ts me, cause they are 2 scents I like in a house. Maybe I'll try lavender.

I really like the bamboo stick ones in the scent. They are subtle enough to just notice when you walk into the room. I turn them regularly and that releases the scent further. Such a glorious selection of different scents too. My faves are pomegranate, spiced pear, Clove and orange and Lemongrass.

Hmm, yeah the "sticks in liquid" thing aren't a favourite of mine, I don't find them strong enough to notice. But I think it's because I have a wide, open-plan house so the kitchen/living areas are more like one huge room rather than a few smaller rooms, so subtle scents get lost in the space.

Yummy!! My only problem with room sprays is that even if I remember to spray them around, they don't last for very long, and I can't be bothered going back and spraying all the time.....Philosophy needs to make one of those battery-operated spray thingies that goes off every 20 minutes or so!

My mum said to me today "That perfume you're wearing is beautiful". I'd sprayed it on about seven hours earlier so I found it hard to believe she could smell it from across the room, so I said "are you sure it's my perfume you can smell?". And she said "yeah, it's a sweet, fresh smell, a bit like shampoo". And I had to sadly state that it was not my perfume but it was in fact the thing plugged into the wall!

I usually get the big bamboo stick home fragances but today I spotted a three pack smaller version I liked. I love incense. I just bought 3 packs (sandalwood, singaporean patchouli and rose) of the stuff by a indian company called "auroshikha" I got each pack for 1.50 from my organics shop. I've got 2 sandalwood burning at the moment.
I only buy soy candles (plain mostly but I don't mind subtle fragranced ones either) they are pricey but they have hours of burn time and I just have a couple - PCC suggested that I get mine in the future from Kit ... :) I've also found my fave soy brand that is stocked at a store in Prahran evoshop.
these are a real treat but I like to have some incense burning most days, and candles at night now and again - depends on my mood.

I washed all the towels and bed sheets today and sprayed them with my new linen sprays, so much fun. I felt so homely :chuckle:

Yes... I sprayed cookies on Clea's bed and the next night her hair still smelled like cookies from laying on the pillow!
She had a friend over here yesterday and I had to do their uniforms in milk chocolate hehehe
