View Full Version : My wedding headpiece

Sapphire

Some of you may remember, I bought my wedding dress some months ago. Collette Dinnigan, 'seashell' (a rich champagne) silk. 1920s/Grecian style - long and flowing with slight draping; crystals in a geometric pattern on the shoulder straps and under the bust-line. A very deep v-neck.

Now its time for a headpiece! I hate puffy veils, and would like either - a simple netted fascinator with silk roses on one side...OR...a very long and fine floor-length veil, almost like a fine silk rather than a course netting.

Which do you think would go best with my dress? Any new ideas or places to buy veils? Websites etc?

I really love this one:

Sapphy, first off, let me say I adore your taste. I love both your options. For your dress, I'd be inclined to go for the short veil/fascinator thingy. I think it would look really beautiful and compliment everything so well. But then, I am SUCH a fan of the soft drapey floor-length veil. So....this one is hard...

I am thinking you might have trouble finding the veil? Bridal shops are still stuck in 1996 and are pretty much lacking in any taste whatsoever...

PS - why can't I be the girl in your pic?! She looks unbelievable! I never see wedding hairdos like that, they are always starched and dated instead of soft, romantic and contemporary. :(

Thanks ozkat! I tried to upload an image of the other veil but it was too big. I don't have any photos of my dress yet to post either :(

This is another one I like, but without the short top layer.

Oh my God Sapphy, that veil is too beautiful for words. Are you getting married in a church or elsewhere? I believe this may be the defining factor...

Fitzroy Gardens Melbourne at 4:30pm. I know this is traditionally a church/formal veil but...

Hmmm....my vote is for the fascinator. I could see the veil working at a church altar, but I can soooo see the fascinator working in a garden. :)

I say go the fascinator. It's gorgeous Sapphire. The veil may also get in the way ??? I just think that I wouldnt want to spend my wedding day having to worry about if Im going to step on my veil.

If your getting married in a garden setting, the fascinator is the way to go :)

I'd say the fascinator! Especially seeing as you're getting married in a garden! I think it would be perfect!

YAY more wedding talk!!

Sapphire, i think the fascinator is absolutely stunning!!! I think the veil is more church-y (i will be having a long lace trimmed veil).

The fascinator wont take away from your stunning dress as well, and in my opinion is "softer" which suits the style of your dress

I love everything about the fascinator, those roses are sooo beautiful! And what says "Sapphy" more than roses?!

i also prefer the facinator , the veil even made from silk tulle will still be heavy , have u tried one on yet ?

ok so this doesn't go with my whole careful with your money thing but could u wear one to the wedding & one to the reception , though only if u can't decide

i actually wore 2 veils one longer & another fuller & shorter so this way at the reception i could drop some "weight"

I like the fascinator too but then I am biased because I wore one at my wedding. In fact my sister made it. She has been making them for years & now she has finally launched her website. She has done many weddings & pieces by consignment. She is also now doing feather bouquets after I requested one for my day.

Fascinator seconded, thirded and fourthd-ed from me. Gorgeous and won't draw attention away from your fabulous CD dress Sapphire. Will also show off a slender neck, so elegant.

I like the veil too, but would probably only wear it if I was going for a more traditional wedding and wanted to have that part of the service where you put it back over your face.

PS M checked out the links; the gardenia one is...wow....

The pictures are BEAUTIFUL sapphire!!!!!! I have to say Im with the other adorables on this one and would say to go for the fascinator. I think also since your dress has a design on it you wont want to cover it up, or have the veil take away the attention from it. And the fascinator will dress up your hair do beautifully, and it looks very pretty and sopisticated!

Wow, opinions seem unanimous!

Medusa, would you believe it; I have already contacted Melissa at Fascinator Biz with some preliminary queries and sent her that photo I posted as an idea! I did not know she was your sister, but it was you who mentioned the website ages ago on this forum, so I thought I would contact a recommended source. Your sister, hey?!

Oh, is this something else to consider - I want to wear my hair down or half-up; both options with soft long curls and a side-part. Sort of 30s-40s but less structured; more whimsical. Would the fascinator suit these styles?

Sapphire personally (and this is so only an opinion) I'd wear my hair all up, but gathered very loosely at the nape of my neck, with a deep side part and some soft fingerwave-type bits at the front. You could still let some bits of hair trail down your neck. And perhaps you could then take off the fascinator at the reception, and take half of your hair down but leave the flowers remaining? If it's a soft unstructured hairstyle, you should be able to take half down without too many worries. Anyway, it's just an idea!

Edit: It's a shame that all wedding hairstyle websites are stuck in 1992 or I could find a pic and show you what I mean...

Ozlicious im having heaps of trouble finding a pic of the hair I want. I can see it in my mind, but all the styles i see are soo over done. I want my hair all up cause i know it will irritate me if i have it down.

Here are some pics which may (or may not) help you Sapphire

Good thinking 99.

The soft classic curl look I want is surprising hard to find pictures of - everything is over styled or 'not-quite-right'. Who would have thought?

Sapphy the first one might suit your dress and the fascinator a bit more. More classic and vintage, less beachy? But would your hair hold that curl and still look soft after a few hours? I don't want them to have to hairspray it into oblivion!

Rosie
21-07-2007, 10:46 PM
Ok, just read Miss O's answer, and thought, I better clarify which model freaks me out - it's the one with leaves. I think I like the hair, but she scares me! :shakehead:

Hi Sapphy,

I just adore the every first pic of the hair-do and the hairpiece of this thread :worship:

I dont have any pics of it (love the thrid pic with out the leaves agreed) but hat about sides up, all curls and a facinator with a little netting piece over your eyes that can be pulled back over your hair???

Sounds like fun. Im thinking veil for my wedding but soo many styles and lengths and materials to consider.

Do you leave it on at the recetion or do you have to take it off (I kinda wanna leave mine on) Onsecond thoughts. ITS MY WEDDING I'LL DO WHAT I DAMN WELL PLEASE!! :chuckle::glee:

Looks like you have a good idea of the direction you'd like to go Saphire. Love to see what it all looks like in the end :hugs::waving::clapping:

Thank you so much for your responses girls (although Rosie, I'm not sure why Miss Leaf Hair freaks you out so much, lol!)

To clarify my style a bit - or possibly confuse everyone just as much as I have confused myself, here is a pic of my wedding dress. I was going to take one with me inside the dress but with my swollen cheeks and flushed skin (thanks wisdom teeth surgery!) I thought I'd avoid any pictures of myself at the moment!

What do you think?
I also found this picture of a mini-veil that I thought might be nice too...have I just confused you all?!

TBA, I love it too but I have had it for several months now and I am afraid that by the time November comes I will be sick of it! I'm too frightened to look at CD's new collection in case I see a gown I like better! But the one I chose is very classically 'me', so I hope any others I see are only fleeting infatuations.

I have yet another hair idea - you all must be sick of me by now!

Mind if I put in my 20c worth here. I love the idea of having both head pieces. The veil for the ceremony and the facinator for the reception. All the celebs are having two dresses these days so why not be different and have two head pieces. I am only suggesting this as I can't make a decision between the two so I say have both!!

While I love this idea PCC, money may be an issue when it comes down to it - we are paying for most of the wedding ourselves.

I'm sure I would, raspberry!

Re wedding day hair/head, no I don't know yet. And I don't have a hair and makeup trial until one week before the wedding because it is in Melb and I am in Perth and cannot get back to Melb before then. So much has been organized online or over the phone!
