Any suggestions? This is my first foray into primers; I would like something that stops makeup sliding off my skin by lunch time because of too much oil.

Thank you :)

Hi Sapphire,

I am a fan of napoleon's poor minimiser and mattifier on the T-zone!

Thanks ladyver. How oily is your skin? Do you still feel the need to blot or retouch your makeup?

Sapphire I use the Napoleon mattifier - got the sample size as part of the Jet Set pack. It's great.

Benefit's Dr Feelgood is cool too, you can use it for touch-ups during the day. And I have a feeling you'll like the packaging:

Thanks ladyver. How oily is your skin? Do you still feel the need to blot or retouch your makeup?

my skin is more combination - i have large pores on nose and at sides & can be quite oily and prone to spots in the T zone... actually it's more like an 'I' zone (OMG.. does that make any sense ) chin, nose & middle of forehead. i should blot or retouch just in that area early afternoon, but am often lazy

i should have mentioned that i apply the mattifier with a foundation brush - i find it is more even & use less. i then apply a small amount of the normal primer everywhere else. when i first tried these in a napoleon store, the SA suggested i layer the primer over the top of the mattifier on the T zone but i find that too much

i also realised only a week ago that i have been applying too much foundation my whole make-up life which caused it to slide - am now trying very hard to use less but bad habits are hard to break:chuckle:

Personally I didn't really like Napoleon mattifier for my oily skin (I have properly oily skin, even when I have dry patches they somehow manage to be oily at the same time). While the Napoleon mattifier made my skin look nice (all glowy like a China Doll!) it actually contributed to the oily to touch feeling. By the end of the day I'd be dying to wash my face because it just felt :vomit:

I think the Napolean mattifier is better for less oliy skin than mine.

I prefer Clarins ISPT: http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=7819

It makes my skin look nice, helps my make up stay longer, doesn't add to the oily feeling and is about half the price of the Napoleon mattifier which is always a plus in my books. It's my fav winter time primer :glee:

I also like DERMAdoctor Tease Zone Oil Control Gel : http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/adorebeauty/viewitem.asp?idproduct=5628

It's great for controlling oiliness, even that horrible hot summer day after a days work level of oiliness. I thought it was pretty magic stuff for summer, it also seemed to temporarily reduce the oiliness of my skin after I'd been using the product for a while even when I wasn't wearing it at the time. Sought of like it had shrunk my oil glands! It's downside is a little hard to describe but I'll try. It doesn't really improve the look of your make up except for the fact that of course your skin looks nicer when it's less greasy! It just doesn't create that glowy look some primers can create. It's a great price for the large size of the container. This is still my fav summer time primer :glee:

Hi Rosie, I was just reading about the dermadoctor gel here on adore and I remembered how you said that used as a primer it doesnt give you the 'dewy' or 'glowy' look some primers can give you, so i wondered do you think it would be too heavy to add a makeup primer on top of this gel?

No, I think that's actually a great idea as long as you apply sparingly. I always applied some moisturizer over the rough patches of my skin and it worked well, so a good primer would be perfect.

Yes the Mirenesse Pro Makeup Base would probably be good for you Sapphire, it sets to a powdery/matte sort of finish (not dewy like some other primers). The green undertone also makes it very good for anyone with excess redness.

Re Clarins ISPT and oil control: to be honest I don't know a lot about it. It's silicone-based so I find it excellent for "filling in" pores etc under makeup, but I don't have oily skin myself so I couldn't speak to its oil control properties. All the literature we have on it talks more about its ability to fill in lines/pores etc and create a smooth canvas for foundation, not so much about whether or not it controls oil.

I see...thank you Kate. Would the Mirenesse also be good as a general skin enhancer? I don't really like foundation but wear IZ tinted so would like a bit of a complexion lift as well as oil/pinkness control.

Kate, me again!

Would you recommend the Mirenesse primer or the Dermadoctor tease-zone for my very oily but sensitive skin? I am also prone to redness though it is not rosacea.

Thank you :)

Kate (Staff)

Depends what you want. Mirenesse will help conceal redness, while the Tease-Zone will do better at controlling oil.

You could do a combo of both if you wanted to be tricky - Tease Zone as a spot treatment on the oily areas, then Mirenesse primer all over.

Now I am confused; and tricky is just too tricky for me! Will have to think about it. Oiliness is a more pressing problem. Redness only comes if I am anxious, angry or emotional; and it never lasts more than a few moments but it can be frequent.

Okay, I have the DermaDoctor tease zone oil control primer and have used it a few times now...I know it came highly recommended but It does not seem to control my oil for any longer than a normal powder – I still have to ‘mop up’ at lunchtime. Is my skin just a complete oil monster or am I doing something wrong? This is what I do:

Cleanse,
Apply Skinceuticals Phyto Corrective Gel
Then DermaDoctor tease zone
Then IZ pale tinted
Then either UC mineral foundation OR Napoleon Camera Finish.

Is this the correct order? I find that when my skin gets oily in the early afternoon I can add the tease zone to the top of everything and it does seem to literally ‘soak’ up the oil but not for that long, as I said.

Bah-Humbug, this oily skin is so frustrating! Especially at work, in meetings etc - it makes me feel like a dirty-skinned adolescent, not a professional.

That's a really good point, thanks fusspot. My mum's skin was very oily when she was younger and it was the bane(marie ha ha) of her life. But when she was 40, she looked 30 and so on. Seriously beautiful, young-looking skin. So while's it's a bit frustrating now, we're gonna be grateful later on!

Alas, you are not the only one! I'm one of those old-fashioned girls who does not like to preen or groom herself in public. So the toilet it is for mopping up un-ladylike oil. Toilet paper is very absorbant; more so than a tissue.

If it is still in date. I just looked it up in my pharmacy order book (bible!) and it is not listed. If you are able to ingest it I am sure it would be fine for your skin. Just dont allow the SA to sell you a product called San Pellegrino Magnesia (blue and yellow box) - it is fizzy like Alka Seltzer! Good luck!

Sapphy!!!

I have news for you. I read this yesterday: http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index.php?qid=20070519234909AA9o4wY so I decided I would give Mylanta a go on my skin. OH. MY. GOD. I applied a tiny little coat of Mylanta to my skin this morning with cotton wool (yeah it seems gross, and I made sure I was alone when I did it) and I SWEAR TO GOD I have had no oil breakthrough all day (I have VERY oily skin and live in humid North Queensland). So far, I have to say it is better than any mattifier I have used. I'm amazed and so psyched. It will take more experimenting (I'm not wearing any foundation today but will test out tomorrow to see if it works as a foundation primer) but so far, so good.

Internet searches have revealed HEAPS of people using Mylanta for this purpose, with great results. And hey, even if it doesn't work for you, you can keep it under the sink for indigestion!!

Love,

Yep if I'm going to be out of airconditioning all day!! It's a bit harder to make it look good now that I'm tanning though, I have to sort of buff it into my skin a bit. But funnily enough, I think all the tanning has been drying out my skin a bit because it's not as oily as it used to be before I started!

hmmm I guess until it dries, like 15 mins? When the Paulas Choice one dries you can see all these little dots where its has absorbed oil around blackheads and open pores and stuff. I have to wonder what other ingredients Mylanta has in it. What would be better is plain milk of magnesia. But I have no idea where you would get that, one brand is Phillips if that helps.

Oh I searched high and low for plain milk of magnesia but couldn't find it anywhere!

Well i tried it and my face felt sticky lol
It didn't really do anything for me either.

I'm pretty sure Milk of Magnesia is discontinued over here

Has anyone tried the Gorgeous Cosmetics Primer? I'll be buying the student start kit which (among other things) contains a primer and foundation, but I'm worried about how my oily acne prone skin with react as I've heard that primers can be just as much of a pain for acne as foundation itself.

Hi Daisy :) I would check out the ingredient list if I was you, to see if there are some hidden oils in the primer! Also a good indicator sometimes is the finish or affect it says the primer gives, e.g moisturising (which is the ones Id be careful with, as they may be too heavy or include lots of oil). I have the Becca mattiffying primer which I love (yes, I also have oily and acne prone skin!) and also the Biotherm makeup base, which is brightening and moisturising, but contains no oils and hasn't made me break out. You can also use it as a highlighter. But if your really set on the gorgeous primer, I suggest you look at the ingredients, and maybe go into the store for a play around with it to test out a small amount?
Hope that helps!:waving:

Hi Serena :) Thanks I'll definitely ask for an ingredient list when I go do the course (the website doesn't list it unfortunately). I'm going to have to check out the Becca primer, that sounds wonderful! Plus the Biotherm would be handy for brightening my skin on the days I have to get to work early (nothing worse then getting into the office with bed-face :chuckle: )
I wish the store was closer, otherwise I'd be in there testing things out - I didn't think to do that yesterday, I was too mesmerized by their gorgeous eyeshadows!

Daisy 0 the Becca ones are awesome - I have used both the mattifying and silky hydrating and I have oily skin - and funnily enough the silky hydrating was far better, maybe ask for a sample of each, as you may find the silky hydrating is better for you.

Usually I wear the becca one on my t-zone and then the biotherm one all over my cheeks, tepples and eyelides and undereyes~ I hate hate my oily skin, makes everything slide off... but using these two makes me look bright without being oily bright if that makes sense :chuckle: and the mattiffying one, feels like a powder when applied, and if u dont use a mattyiffying foundation it will just leave your skin lookin silky. But yes you must check them out, or the gorgeous ones when you can and let us know how you go :typing::waving:

I'll grab samples of all 3 products mentioned the next time I'm at Myer - I'm really exciting about the brightening effects of the Biotherm for my eye area!
I'll post up a review of the Gorgeous Cosmetics Primer when I get it (2nd Dec), as well as a review of all the other products I receive in the kit :) I've heard good things about their foundation, so I have my fingers crossed.

Yep, I've used this one LMV...it's ok but ended up drying me out a bit too much.

Oh same! Didn't like it at all! I have very oily skin, especially around my nose, and the Napoleon just robbed it of any glowiness or moisture whatsoever...

Okay I tried the Gorgeous Cosmetics primer on Sunday and I have to say I was very disappointed. It felt like a weird mask once it was on, and then once I put the matt foundation over the top it just got worse. I felt so very greasy and my face was all shiney within minutes. I didn't want to touch my face because it was so goopy feeling. Luckily some loose powder applied over the top seemed to help, but I really had to put on quite a lot to dry it up a bit. I couldn't wait to get it off!

I'm also currently on my 3rd day off work due to chemical burns under both eyes from the course on Sunday (possibly from their makeup remover??) - so so so painful :shakehead:

I bought the Rimmel recover primer to reduce redness and its really cheap at $9.95 adn it sure does dose the trick. You don't need to use very much and it covers my red nose area quite well and its matte.

Maybe Rudolf should invest in some if he is self conscious about his red nose??:reindeer:
