One of my best friends is a hair dresser and a colour specialist, she comes to my house and for the last year or so (except for a brief chocolate brown flirtation) she has highlighted my hair.

I think she is fairly conservative in her colouring techniques as I never ever get quite the look I am after, right now I have some regrowth and am due a half head next week, but my highlights look 'stringy' and almost grey! I love creamy blondes, but have to be careful not to come up to brassy.... so have been using PPS silver which is a violet shampoo a couple of times a week. My hair just is very drab and grey looking. Dont know if it's winter but I feel it needs a big brighten up!

my big dilema is do I colour my hair myself and experiement, as no matter how hard I try it's never quite right with her, the big thing is I don't want to hurt her feelings, but she does know I am a bit unpredictable with my hair, when I when from brown back to blonde again, she took it very seriously, whereas for me it was a bit of fun!

Also if I were to colur it myself what does anyone suggest, I love creamy blonde tones, nothing brassy and definately not the grey colours I have now.

Also what happens if I colour over my highlights? Am thinking I want to have some fun and experiement but don't want to hurt anyones feelings!!!

Oooh tough one. But you know what? It's YOUR hair and how you look and feel. I am not brave enough to do my hair myself so I would go to another salon. But if your friend isn't doing a great job then you shouldn't use her. She'd probably be more upset that you think she's crap and haven't told her than letting her do your hair in sympathy? Just a thought. But hair is important and if someone did a dodgy job on me, no matter who it was, I wouldn't go back.

Hope this helps xxx

Thanks Celestfay

I was thinking I might go and buy a hair magazine then find a very specifc blonde colour, get her to colour it all over to that shade, then ask her to show me how to do my re growth, that way I can keep it up every 4 weeks, as I am really fussy with my hair!

Bit scared to try the home colouring especially over the highlights and dread going brassy!

You're right though, it's a tough one

Sticking to one shade would make it harder for your friend to get it wrong - but do you want your hair to be one shade of blonde?

Definately do not touch it yourself. My bestie is a hairdresser and she has always always told me don't play around with blonde at home for 2 reasons. 1) you can really damage the hair itself eg. frizzies, dullness and worst of all snappage. 2) there is nothing worse than seeing a blonde, who you know did it herself because , they are usually orange or really white. HAirdressing is a science and especially with blondes there are a tonne of different ways to correct your problem.

If it were you i'd say "look at my hair does this look right to you, is there anyway you can fix it". I'm sure shes a great hairdresser so she may have notice your hair being grey and stringy aswell.

Once again i can't warn you enough don't touch it yourself. Because worse case scenario you over bleach it and it snaps off an inch from the roots and you end up with "the britney". Also remeber going blonde, staying blonde and fixing blonde take a while when you do it right.

P.S. Put a protein treatment through it as soon as you can and wrap your head up in glad wrap to ge the full effect.

Hope this helps xxxxxxxxx

thanks Princess Precious, you're very right & stopped me from having a mad attempt at it myself.... now just waiting to get a time to see her and fix it up.

Been collecting hair colour photo's so this might help!:spin:

Yes, overbleaching is NOT good, it looks terrible, and a Britney never looks good. When I was sick a couple of years ago, my hair went to straw, and it was awful! I had to take it all off at an inch! Not quite a Britney, but not good either.

I bleached my own hair blonde. I think it came out really good. It came with a golden hue beacuse I have naturally dark hair. I wanted a real white blonde but couldn't be bothered putting toner in it so I kept it how it was. I find that hairdressers only do things safe. It really offends me. When I went to hairdressers and asked to go blonde they wouldn't touch my hair because they said they were afraid if they bleached it it would fall out. So I did it myself and it was fine. I honestly wouldn't care if they tried and screwed my hair up cos I wouldn't mind just shaving my hair if it was too bad. I've dyed my hair every color and find it's way easier (and cheaper) than going to hairdressers because they just play it too safe.

Oh I forgot to say, so in conclusion I think bellabean have some fun with it. If it's a really white color you can dye it some other pretty colors or just buy some blonde dye to go over them.

Maybe you are going to the wrong salons? I have dark hair, and my salon had no problems sending me blonde, with interesting foils (pink, purple and blue).

I agree that hair should be fun, but it's too darn cold to shave it all off!

Yes I think it is the wrong season for a shaved head. I don't know, maybe I am going to the wrong hairdressers. It's funny because I remember going as a kid to get highlights in my hair but when it came to blonding all of it they didn't want to touch it.

Do you have really dark hair? That may be why. Black and nearly black hair doesn't take well to bleaching, don't know why. Had it explained once a long, long time ago.

Yeah I think you're sort of right about that. My hair is naturally medium brown and I wanted to go a really light creamy blonde, but they wouldn't do it all in one go - they wanted to foil it down gradually over two or three visits. It would have taken months to get to the colour I wanted! I really wanted to have a drastic change; go in one colour and emerge a totally different one. I wanted people to go "Oh....my....God! WOW!" instead of "hey, is your hair a bit lighter?". In the end we compromised - she did do foils but did them a bit lighter than she wanted, but my hair still wasn't as blonde as I would have liked. She only agreed after I swore I'd use all the aftercare products and protein treatments etc (extra $$$ of course!).

I reckon they should just be like drycleaners - make you sign a waiver saying you know the risks and are fully informed, and want to proceed anyway!

Trash I say hats off to ya babe. I would be scared sh*tless of my hair all snapping off. After my last hideous bleaching experience where a whole bunch of my hair snapped off from over bleaching :shakehead::tears: I am soo totally vein over my hair. My cousin and my dad recently shaved their heads to suppourt my lil bro and I wanted too soo much but I just couldnt bring myself to do it. :tears:

Toner is a great way to get a creamier blonde gals. I know it takes extra time but it's sooo worth it. Goldwell do some great ones. The ones in a blue mousse can.

If I didnt get the coulour I liked I would just go to another hairdresser and get a second opinion :whipcrack:

I'm going back to blondish/strawberry blond and haing all the damage from last time almost all gone now it is a slooow process. I hate it but I would rather that and get it perfect than end up looking like a hacked at Barbie doll head :flames::shakehead::whipcrack:
